What’s New in Information Security Education | open systems. DBMS
In the previous thematic issue of the journal “Open Systems”, dedicated to the problems of information security, which our editors prepared a year ago, a large review on the topic of education was published [1].
What’s new a year later in the training programs for advanced training of information security specialists?
Microinform Training Center continues cooperation with MIS Training Institute, which develops training courses on general management and special issues of building a corporate security system. The program “Security in the Internet, Web and e-commerce” was added to the programs for managing the information security of an organization and protecting the network perimeter, dedicated to the selection, development, integration and administration of security tools for Web servers, browsers, electronic transactions, Web applications and electronic systems. commerce. The program includes four courses. The course “Securing and auditing TCP / IP networks” is also included in the program for protecting the network perimeter. The Securing and Auditing Web Sites course covers possible risks and countermeasures in protecting core Web servers, Web transaction vulnerabilities, and methods for identifying design flaws in Web applications. The course “Audit and security of application development” focuses on security issues of the application development process, including the audit of the traditional development cycle, the audit of rapid development methodologies, the audit of the user part of the application, the audit of testing, development project management, etc. The fourth course of the program the student chooses from two courses on security and auditing Windows 2000 Server or Unix. The potential audience for this program is those who design, administer, and evaluate the security of external and internal e-commerce environments. Like the two previous MIS Training Institute programs at Microinform, the new program is a certification one: students who complete all four courses receive a MIS Training Institute certificate confirming their qualifications.
The Network Perimeter Defense Certification Program is enhanced with courses in Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) and Network Security Testing. The first course covers architecture, operation, selection of IDS from a list of free and commercial software, network attack scenarios and protection procedures, as well as new directions in the development of IDS tools. The original title of the Network Security Testing course was “The Good Guys’ Guide?” on network hacking. This hands-on course shows what vulnerabilities can arise from software misconfiguration, application system incompatibilities, and network design flaws, what actions can be taken to break through firewalls, and how to create a network perimeter security testing tool for Windows and Unix operating environments.
Another activity of the MIS Training Institute is training and organizing conferences on auditing information systems. Over the past year, Mikroinform has twice held and plans to continue a five-day MIS seminar called “IT Audit School”, as well as a seminar on risk management of information systems. All MIS courses here are still taught exclusively by MIS Training Institute instructors. We also recall that MIS training programs are independent of software and hardware security system vendors: the capabilities of certain products can only be used as an illustration of the general principles of information security.
Another Western program for information security specialists is independent of vendors – the Security Certified Program (SCP), whose courses are taught at the LANIT Network Academy. This program is not as global as the training from the MIS Training Institute, it does not address the issues of building corporate policy and managing the information security system. SCP courses focus on two main areas of information resource protection: protecting the network using firewall technologies, intrusion detection, and building a reliable communications structure using public key infrastructure technologies and biometrics. Judging by the feedback from the listeners, SCP courses are distinguished by a wide coverage of problems and are taught at a fairly high level. The conceptual approach to topics and independence from vendors attracts IT leaders who want to increase the level of literacy in general information security issues to the courses. However, among narrow security specialists there is an opinion that the breadth of the spectrum of topics leads to their superficial presentation: problems are only indicated. SCP programs prepare for the Security Certified Network Professional (SCNP) and Security Certified Network Architect (SCNA) certification exams.
International information security certifications like CISSP or SCP have yet to gain credibility among domestic professionals and leaders. Perhaps, over time, the presence of such certificates will become a prerequisite for candidates for positions in the field of information security. But even in this case, such titles will not acquire any other meaning, except for an indicator of the level of professionalism. In our country, there are certain legal requirements for those who work with confidential information and are responsible for its protection. According to the decree of the Russian government, all organizations are required to license in the State Technical Commission activities related to the processing of confidential information. To obtain this license, it is necessary that the company has specialists with the right to deal with the technical protection of information. Such a right can be acquired, for example, by attending the Information Technology Security course at the Informzaschita training center. The course program, which includes the main issues of information security, including legal and organizational ones, was approved by the State Technical Commission.
With the adoption of the law on electronic digital signature, the need to study various aspects of the use of digital signatures and the construction of a public key infrastructure (PKI) has increased. A new course of the Informzaschita training center is devoted to these issues. The course deals with the legal, theoretical and practical issues of using EDS, public key certificates and certification centers in electronic document management systems, e-mail, e-commerce, banking payment systems and other application solutions, and also studies the Crypto-Pro CA software package for managing certification services.
Recently, Microsoft has been paying special attention to security issues, trying to break the stereotype about its developments as not very reliable and unprotected. Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing strategy places significant emphasis on developer and user education, and not just within the company’s own authorized courses. The Informzaschita training center has created a course on network security based on Windows 2000/XP, developed in accordance with the recommendations of Microsoft itself, as well as organizations competent in information security issues such as the US National Security Agency, NIST and SANS Institute. The course also takes into account the experience of the specialists of the training center in setting up Windows 2000/XP and using the protection mechanisms embedded in them. The course is designed for system administrators and information security specialists in the environment of these operating systems. The recommendations of the same organizations and Microsoft were based in the training center and in the development of a new course on the security of e-mail systems.
This year, the Informzashchita training center expanded the program of authorized courses of a well-known manufacturer of information security management systems, Internet Security Systems. In addition, the training center received authorization from another Western developer of data protection tools – Clearswift, which specializes in content analysis software systems for information control in corporate networks.
Authorized training programs from CheckPoint Software Technologies, a leading Internet security provider, are offered by UNI’s NTC Training Center. In June of this year, CheckPoint announced a new Application Intelligence technology that integrates both network and application level information security capabilities into the firewall. And already in July 2003, NTC updated the CheckPoint VPN-1/FireWall-1 program, which now introduces listeners to the functionality implemented in the latest version of this software product, Next Generation with Application Intelligence.
Conclusion
In general, a fairly diverse picture of information security training is emerging in the metropolitan market of educational services. There are comprehensive programs that allow you to study international standards for organizing a corporate secure IT infrastructure, domestic traditions and legal norms in the field of information security.
