There is a way out: Texas again wanted to become an independent state | Articles
Republicans in Texas called for a referendum to secede from the United States. The Lone Star State periodically raises the issue of establishing an independent state. Now this is primarily due to the upcoming midterm congressional elections, as well as general dissatisfaction with the policies pursued by the White House. How great are the chances of secession – Izvestia sorted it out.
Exit 9 everyone0005
“Texas retains the right to secede from the United States, we call on the Texas Legislature to organize a referendum to do so,” says the 40-page final report passed at the state’s Republican convention.
The publication says that this issue needs to be raised and submitted to a plebiscite next year for “the people of Texas to determine whether the state should regain its status as an independent state.”
According to local Republicans, the authorities “violated the right of Texas to self-government.” In the report, the current head of state, Joseph Biden, is called “acting president,” because, according to the authors of the document, he did not legally win. They believe that in the main metropolitan areas of the country, “significant falsifications were made” in the voting, which helped the Democratic candidate eventually come to power.
In particular, the Texas Republicans demand to cancel the results of the 2020 elections, and also call for the repeal of law 1965 on voting rights, designed to make it easier for non-white US citizens to vote.

In addition, they claim violations of the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which guarantees the right to own a gun. In their opinion, there should be no gun-free zones in the state, they also opposed attempts to ban people under 21 from buying guns.
Lone Star State
Texas was originally part of Mexico until it gained independence in 1836. For the next nine years, it was an independent state until it joined the United States. However, he did not stay there for long and already in 1861 he left the USA in solidarity with the “fraternal slave states” and formed the Confederation, which marked the beginning of the American Civil War.
The Supreme Court declared secession illegal, as a result, Texas was reunited with the United States in 1870, after the end of the Civil War.
The issue of the state’s possible independence comes up especially sharply on the agenda when another Democratic president moves to the White House. So, after Barack Obama won the election in 2008, Rick Perry, then head of Texas, said that the people of the state were thinking about leaving.
“Polarization on steroids”
Darrell West, director of management research at the Brookings Institution, says Texas’ secession from the US is unlikely any time soon. « There are those among Texans who disagree with the US policy on a wide range of issues, including immigration, gun control, climate change. But it’s one thing to complain about it, and quite another to make your own way. As soon as they encounter it, they will understand how difficult it is. Will Texas need to develop its own currency? Will he have his own army? Will people need a passport if they decide to travel from Texas to Oklahoma? In addition, a logical question arises: will the state itself allow Texas to secession? ” the expert responded.

The political scientist notes that this issue has resurfaced on the agenda due to the serious political polarization of society. “The fact is that there has been a surge of internal disagreements, people do not trust each other. In fact, this is such a polarization on steroids. Crazy ideas that were previously hidden are now part of the political platform” , the specialist summed up.
According to him, it would be rash for the Texans to try to leave now, in the run-up to the congressional elections. According to forecasts, they may turn out to be very successful for the residents of the state, as well as the presidential election in 2024.
Another expert, Richard Kreitner, author of Break It Down: Separation, Division, and the Secret History of America’s Imperfect Union, points out that while a possible Texas exit is considered a distant prospect, one should not think that this will never happen.
“It is likely that a party that has been deprived of power in the largest state will consider secession, as, for example, the Liberals in the largest Democratic state, California, did after Donald Trump came to power” , he guesses.
The society is divided
The Texas constitution provides for the right to secede. Theoretically, Texans could hold such a referendum. Moreover, the staff is large, the potential is significant, Andrey Kortunov, Director General of the Russian Council on International Affairs, explained in an interview with Izvestia.
— Still, this is more of a hypothetical right than a real possibility. But Texas, since it is a Republican state, has a lot of claims against Biden and his team. Including dissatisfaction with the migration policy, which, from the point of view of the locals, leads to the fact that the wrong people and the wrong number are sent there. There are controversies surrounding Biden’s energy policy. Texas is one of the main centers of oil production in the United States. Not all new rules, in particular environmental standards, are seen as fair and justified. So there are 9 reasons0008, – the political scientist believes.

The expert believes that the actions of the Texas Republicans are more like a PR move.
– Maybe he’s targeting the midterm congressional elections to mobilize supporters, show discontent, and win. Maybe this is due to more far-reaching plans – the 2024 presidential election. American society remains divided on many issues, – the expert believes.
In turn, the head of the Center for North American Studies IMEMO RAS. EAT. Primakova Victoria Zhuravleva notes that various right-wing conservative forces periodically play on such sentiments related to independence.
– They are activated for the elections. The next one will be in November. The Republicans expect them to win and get Congress. In addition, this can be associated with a bill that passed in Congress on new measures of gun control among the population. This causes a surge of discontent among conservatives, and especially in states where Americans live who adhere to conservative views. The traditional theme of independence periodically pops up, but it has no chance of being realized. All this is happening against the backdrop of dissatisfaction with the federal government and Biden, inflation, only spurring such rhetoric, – said the Americanist in an interview with Izvestia.
