The Daily Walk

Many years ago I decided to add a daily walk around our neighborhood to our morning schedule. We started out small by walking around our long block. We clocked it in the car and found that it was six-tenth of a mile. That took about seventeen to twenty minutes depending on the skill set and age of the walkers…..

Transporting Daycare Kids

I know there are many types of agreements between parents and providers when it comes to having children in the provider’s vehicle. There are parents who want it for their kids and many who pay providers to transport their child to and from school and preschool. Some providers transport their own children to school and have field trips as a major selling point of their business…….

Kindergarten in the residential complex “Symbol” in Moscow

A competent approach to architecture is one of the most important factors in shaping the personality of a child. A space built with
actual pedagogical theory,
encourages children to communicate with each other, creates favorable conditions for games and development, brings up a sense of beauty. This is the environment that the architects of the ATRIUM bureau tried to create in the new kindergarten.

Residential complex “Symbol” on the territory of the former plant “Sickle and Hammer” ATRIUM architects have been engaged in a comprehensive and long-term, and the design of educational spaces, along with the residential and living environment, is their key competence. So here all the stars converged as they should (and the letters too – they, in the role of Atlantes, support the edge of the hull from the side of the main entrance). In addition, the kindergarten is adjacent to the school, which is also being designed by ATRIUM, and the Green River park. Together, they create a space in which educational projects are visually and aesthetically integrated into a single urban development – which is not often the case.

Location plan: kindergarten on the right and the school building on the left

Ground floor layout

Second floor layout

Third floor layout

The cornerstone in the design of the kindergarten was the issue of compactness: the site has an irregular triangular shape and is significantly limited in area. As a result, the building consists of two blocks connected by a glazed corridor. The front one is lined with dark brick-like concrete tiles and echoes the decoration of the adjacent school building. The second block is light, with a plastered facade and an arbitrary arrangement of windows, which are highlighted with multi-colored slopes.

Through the glazed walls of the upper levels and the corridor on the first floor, a view opens up to a spacious three-height hall decorated with the Flamingo art object. Pupils 3-4 and 4-5 years old occupy the first floor, older children and preparatory groups – the second and third floors. All group rooms are equipped with transformable partitions that separate sleeping and play areas. In addition, on the second floor there is a music class with an inventory and methodological room.

As we can see, when choosing color schemes for both interiors and facades, the architects deliberately chose neutral shades without deliberately “childish” tones. The aforementioned column letters are another matter: a more visual evidence of the typology, perhaps, is not required.
