My name is April Fewell and I am pleased to introduce myself as the MVCP Director. I am so excited that you are considering our preschool as the place for your child to grow and learn! My desire is that your child will grow developmentally, emotionally, physically, academically, and spiritually. I am proud of our program and how we offer a wide variety of academic experiences and works to instill a love of Jesus Christ into the hearts of our young students.

We are more than a business, we are a part of your family. We want you to have regular conversations with your child’s teacher, however, I also want to encourage you to call, e-mail or stop by the preschool office to speak with me about any comments, questions, or concerns you may have regarding your child. If you’d like to sit down over a cup of coffee and talk, just let let me know. I’ll buy the coffee and we can talk.

More than just daycare

How do you find the right preschool for the entire age range of of your daycare needs? What do you look for? Will they teach and challenge your child as well as love and care for them as much as you?

We can help! Campbell Community Church Preschool offers baby care and classes for 1 year old, 2 year old, 3 year old, 4 year old and pre-k children.  We keep our teacher/student ratios much lower than state requirements and even lower than most other preschools, because we know that it is that three-way relationship between you, your child, and the teacher that helps so much. No one wants the child warehouse model where there is one teacher in a room with dozens of children. We want what you want: personalized teaching, playful interaction, and a long-term relationship which will see your child from infancy until they head off for Kindergarten.  

We intentionally seek staff for whom teaching children is a passion and calling. We truly want to work with children, balancing playtime, teaching, physical activity, and creative arts. If we do our job right, your child will be a well rounded individual when they go on to elementary school.

Your child really matters. They matter to you, and they matter to us, too.

Spiritual growth is a key part of life. Here your child will learn age-appropriate Bible lessons and songs taught by our children’s pastor.

MUSIC

In many other cultures, music is participatory with everyone involved. Our music program takes this focus, teaching children to be actively involved in music. We learn rhythm, pitch, singing, dance and movement. Children are encouraged to get silly and to get up and move. The teacher uses instruments and props to provide kinesthetic experiences that leave the children with an appreciation for all kinds of music.

SPORTS

Physical activity is highly important for children. Our sports program offers them the opportunity to begin learning the basics of sports such as throwing, kicking, hitting a ball, catching a ball, and safe movement as well as the basics of how to play basketball, soccer, and baseball. Children are taught the motor skills and motions that can be used to build on later if they want to play these sports in school. In addition, they are taught how to stretch and warm up as well as the importance of hydration.

SPANISH LANGUAGE

Studies show that learning a second language as a child, improves language abilities in all areas, including their native language. We have a Spanish program. Instead of doing a “sit and learn activity” the teacher engages in play with the children and speaks in Spanish for the entire session, teaching them colors, shapes, days of the week and months, and common phrases. Our goal is to expose the children to the language and set a foundation for which to build on in later years.

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE

According to experts, babies as young as six to seven months old can remember a sign. By eight months, children can begin to sign single words and imitate gestures, and by 24 months, children can sign compound words and full sentences. Many abnormal behaviors such as aggression, tantrumming, self-injury, anxiety, and depression, are often attributed to an inability to communicate to others. Sign language allows the child to communicate using signs and motivates the verbal language process. Another benefit of teaching a child to sign may be the facilitation of their attentiveness to social gestures of others as well as of themselves. Teaching sign language along with speech has proven to speed up spoken communication.

Infants

Infants are just beginning to learn about the world around them. At MVCP we will be there to provide a safe, loving, and nurturing environment in which that may begin.  We have designed our infant rooms to be cozy, allowing children to feel close to their caregivers at all times. Our program is also designed so that children receive all the attention they need to feel safe and secure as well as loved and protected.

Ones

Curriculum for this age concentrates on transitional skills. Teachers work with the students to help them eat more solid food, hold and use eating utensils, sit at tables for meals, sit and listen to stories, sleep on nap mats, and transition from pacifiers and bottles to sippy cups and water bottles. In addition to those life skills, the teachers use verbal and sign language to develop a child’s vocabulary from babbling to comprehensible words.

Twos

This room runs on a more structured curriculum. The teachers run a circle time every morning that covers colors, shapes, days of the week, and other early learning subjects. In addition to the circle time, the students engage in three centers every day. The first center is an art project that follows the theme of the week. The second center is a motor skill type activity which includes using scissors, tracing, and more. The third is an exploratory type activity like the kitchen or tool sets to provide opportunities for development in all of the different learning areas.

Threes

Similar to the Twos room, with circle times, the Threes begin to work on learning their alphabet and pre-writing skills, beginning math skills, and advancing motor skills.

Fours

These rooms concentrates on allowing children to become more independent by presenting opportunities for them to problem solve and explore new situations. In addition to allowing them to make their own choices, the teachers engage the students in a variety of activities to provide kindergarten readiness skills such as pre-reading, early math, beginning sciences and history

CURRICULUM SUMMARY

Campbell Community Church Preschool exists to work together with parents to nurture children toward life-success in a safe haven of encouragement, excellence and love. While here every child will feel valued, confident and secure. We believe that children learn best through hands-on experiences, including play and exploration. Our staff will work with your child to foster these experiences. Toys, lesson materials and activities will be provided that encourage imaginative play and creativity. We will also promote development in the following areas:

Social and Emotional Development – Your child will become more aware of self and others, learn to work out problems in positive ways, and to interact with peers as well as adults. We respect each child’s feelings, helping them learn appropriate outlets for emotions through dramatic play, stories, and active as well as quiet play. Your child will be encouraged to care for family, friends, and community.

Cognitive Skills – Your child will be exposed to language and vocabulary, number concepts, size and shape discrimination, color recognition, and spatial relationships. Games, directed projects and other learning tools will assist each child in learning at his or her own pace.

Physical Development – Your child will take important steps for healthy physical development. From a young age, large toys are used daily to promote gross motor development. As the children grow, we offer scheduled physical education time with both team play that teaches sports skills and free play to encourage children to be active. Puzzles, scissors and other small manipulative materials are used to build fine motor skills.

Spiritual Awareness – Your child is a whole being with needs in physical, mental, and spiritual development. We are a Christ-honoring institution, so we see faith in God as natural and essential to the development of a whole and balanced child. Faith lessons are simplified to a child’s level of comprehension and will include simple stories about Jesus. Religious ties to holidays will be included in classroom curriculum. Virtues of love, honor, respect and responsibility are core values of such faith. Prayer will be a part of each day.

Creative Expression – Your child will receive a wide variety of artistic experiences, materials, and substances to expand the child’s awareness of color, form, and texture. We offer weekly classes in music and movement to learn about sound, order, rhythm and beauty. Creative exercises are integrated throughout the curriculum with various opportunities for self-expression and imaginative play. Each classroom will also have areas for quiet time where a child can relax or just be alone.

Story Time

Our Mission

 Cross Roads Preschool & Kindergarten has been serving the north central Phoenix area since 1965. The school is licensed and regulated by the State of Arizona Department of Health Services. Cross Roads follows the standards and guidelines established by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). These two regulating bodies establish and oversee the compliance of a myriad of safety and educational standards based on research focused on the development and education of young children. 

First-Rate Curriculum

 

The Arizona Early Childhood Education Standards provide the curricular framework for the Cross Roads curriculum.  These standards are based on research demonstrating an understanding of how young children develop and learn.  The curriculum supports learning across both developmental and academic content areas. Each area has specific, measurable goals that are linked to early learning standards as well as future learning. 

Within this curricular framework, a theme-based model is incorporated.  These learning units are appropriate to the developmental level of the various age groups and allow for flexibility and adaptation by the classroom teachers to accommodate children’s interests, family cultures and needs.  Basic and extended objectives are determined to correspond with the themes.  This method provides for a sequential and progressive learning experience for each child.

Each age-level program is designed to prepare a child with the necessary skills to be successful at the next educational and developmental level.  The Cross Roads curriculum is divided into four areas of development:

  • Social & Emotional
  • Physical & Self-help
  • Cognitive
  • Language

Within these areas of learning, focus is placed on opportunities for expression and discovery: creative expression/art, language, math readiness, large and small group experiences, science, gross and fine motor skills, music, and dramatic play.

Uniquely CrossRoads

 

In addition to the outstanding curriculum and staff, Cross Roads offers an experience unlike other preschools.

  • Standard 4-Hour Day
    Students are invited to a 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM school day. Parents and children needing more flexibility can take advantage of Early Care and/or After Care offered daily.   • Music, Spanish and A.C.T.I.V.E Classes
    Every week Cross Roads kids have special time set aside for music, Spanish and A.C.T.I.V.E. classes. This time truly enhances children’s early learning experience. With a dedicated Spanish teacher students not only learn another language, they develop a preliminary understanding of another culture and the vast world around them. Sportsmanship, the importance of movement and physical development are highlighted in A.C.T.I.V.E. class in order to stimulate muscles and the brain. 
  • Lunch with the Teachers
    Lunchtime can be a great time to learn about food and manners as well as socialize with friends. Students are invited to bring their lunches every day and eat with their class before the school day is done (excludes Time for Two program).
  • Peanut-Free Campus
    Safety is taken seriously at Cross Roads. Parents of children with a peanut allergy can breathe a little easier knowing that the entire school is peanut-free. Further food restrictions are addressed in individual classrooms based on need. To read more about our peanut policy, click here.

“In order for our children to be able to save their country, they need good teachers”

On Knowledge Day, the day the new school year begins, we present to our readers the text version of the conversation between Yuri Semchenkov (radio Smolenskaya Spring) and Marina Knyazhinskaya (Press Service Smolensk diocese) with Irina Viktorovna Kaplina, head of the Orthodox kindergarten No. 4 of the city of Smolensk.

The conversation was made in the program “Simply Speaking” on the radio station “Smolenskaya Spring” as part of the information and educational project “Cultural Code. Smolensk 102.7 FM.

Y.S. and M.K.: — Hello, Irina Viktorovna.

– Hello!

Yu.S.: – Judging by the number of the kindergarten you head, we have several Orthodox kindergartens in Smolensk. We have already talked with people who were pioneers in this matter – the organizers of Orthodox Kindergarten No. 1. Tell us about the path of your kindergarten. What is it like and how did you “fit in” with the friendly family of Orthodox kindergartens?

– We have a special history. Actually, this is what distinguishes the life of Orthodox Christians – on the way there are many surprises, miracles and God’s help. In Smolensk, the kindergarten, in fact, is the third. There was a group that was also listed under the number, but when the legal amendments entered into force, everything changed and fell into place. We have three Orthodox kindergartens: two in the city of Smolensk and one in Velizh. In total, there are 11 Orthodox kindergartens in Russia. An Orthodox kindergarten can be called a full-fledged kindergarten if it has a confessional representation. That is, the right to work in the Orthodox system in a confessional direction. Of course, there are a lot of kindergartens in the country that have some kind of bias, or extracurriculars are included.

Yu.S.: Did you witness the transition from a secular kindergarten to an Orthodox kindergarten?

– Yes, I have been working for 35 years. Of these, 25 years – as a leader. The Orthodox garden, as a confessional one, has been operating for a full 15 years.

YS: Share your experience with us. Perhaps those who listen to us may be afraid to take some steps in this direction.

– Yes, the transition was interesting in general. The fact is that in the “zero” years they got rid of kindergartens: they were sold and closed. In general, everyone has their own story, and we were no exception. Our kindergarten belonged to the Smolensk Combine OOO Smolmyaso. When the enterprise began to collapse, the kindergarten was no longer needed. But we were lucky. I am grateful to the director of Smolmyaso LLC – he taught us the first lesson of independent work, giving us the opportunity to work independently.

From the outside it looked like a tragedy, because a kindergarten is an institution that was unprofitable. And suddenly – “earn yourself, pay yourself.” But the apparent tragedy of the whole situation turned into such help, such a lifeline, that we still remember the management of the enterprise with a kind word. We have learned to survive, we have learned to live, we have learned to earn our living. Therefore, even before entering the Orthodox confessional status, we worked for ourselves and tried to find ways to survive and find our place.

Yu.S.: — This is an economic transition. And moral and spiritual?

– Everything is very interconnected. In this difficult time, we also needed to somehow save ourselves, and all the doors in front of us were closed. We began to “knock on all doors” – at administrative offices, at all kinds of reception rooms … But without an answer. Then we began to understand that we should pray and ask God for help. We have taken this side of the issue very seriously. They began to go on pilgrimage trips, began to become churched on their own. We consecrated the garden, although it was still secular. But we did it with the consent of our entire team. At that time, we still did not dream of eventually having the status of a diocesan kindergarten.

It turns out that we were churched first. Then everything came together at the right time – when we were ready for it. A meeting was held with Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, now His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. On the one hand, we needed support and wings, on the other hand, there were so many parents who wanted their children to attend an Orthodox kindergarten that there were not enough places in the first kindergarten. But everything did not happen immediately. When we had already agreed with Vladyka that our kindergarten would be an institution of the Smolensk diocese, Metropolitan Kirill became the guardian of the Patriarchal Throne, then His Holiness the Patriarch. So everything slowed down a bit.

There were people who supported us: both in the Smolensk Regional Duma and in the City Council. There were opponents and supporters. This story lasted a very long time, but, in the end, it ended favorably for us and for many parents.

Yu.S.: — How did the children perceive the change in the status of the kindergarten: a child went to an ordinary kindergarten, and then suddenly ended up in an Orthodox one. Do children perceive this transition more easily?

– Children perceive easily. From experience I can confirm that for children this is the norm of life, not something superficial. It was more difficult with my parents. Yes, atheistic parents, of course, took their children. But many reacted like this: “They won’t teach you something bad, after all, it’s an Orthodox garden, and it will be good there, but … let it!”. But even through children, parents become churched. If children perceive life in the bosom of the Church as the norm of life, and, naturally, they carry this norm into their families.

Yu.S.: – From which districts, other than where they live, are children taken to an Orthodox kindergarten?

– We mainly have “imported” children: from Nightingale Grove, Kiselevka, Yuzhny Microdistrict, Milovidovo, Korolevsky, Magalinshchina, Sortirovki. People come to us purposefully. Of course, the situation with insufficient places in toddlers makes many parents look for any kindergarten that will accept their little ones. They come on time. But practice shows that every year there are fewer and fewer parents who transfer their children from us to another kindergarten.

It cannot be said that it was from the first second – there were a lot of failures and moments that slightly led us to despair, but we understood that we just need to hope that the Lord will not leave us, because faith always helps us.

Yu.S.: — How hard do parents take this? Are there staunch atheists?

– No, we did not have convinced atheists.

Yu.S.: — How do you now find new employees, young cadres?

– Here again you need to trust in God. They themselves come. Those who are really needed will remain, others will step aside.

Yu.S.: Is it easier or harder to live with such thoughts?

Lighter, of course. It is difficult in another sense: you must give the person time to figure out whether he needs it, whether the person is ready to go with us in the same direction. As a leader, I want this to happen faster, but it doesn’t happen faster. It happens on time. Now I am happy that I work in such a team, because these are people who have several educations, including seminary. For this we are grateful to our Vladyka Isidore. He organized our education: all our teachers graduated from our Theological School. We have not become theologians, but we understand what we are doing.

Our basic knowledge is developmental psychology. We have always worked in this direction. When the kindergarten was secular, this was our basic platform. Development of consciousness, development of developmental psychology. Of course, we had curators and scientists who came to visit us. We were supervised by Valentina Vasilievna Stepanova, candidate of psychological sciences, Smolyanka. This man played a huge role not only in the life of the kindergarten, but in general in the lives of people. “A blind man cannot teach a blind man to play an instrument.” Therefore, teachers and educators must develop themselves in order to give development to children and pupils. What Valentina Vasilievna taught us is not taught in institutes. When we received a confessional presentation and began to work in the status of an Orthodox kindergarten, everything “coincided”. All the values, tendencies of Orthodox education simply laid down, like a foundation, on the knowledge that we had. Therefore, we did not need to retrain at all, to break ourselves.

М.К.: — Irina Viktorovna, is there a confessor-priest in the garden who takes care of the kindergarten?

– We have a confessor – Archpriest Vladimir Dmitriev, rector of the church in honor of the Holy Martyr Mercury of Smolensk. Father Vladimir supervises us: he conducts conversations with us, and prays, he comes to classes with children. Our work is carried out under his strict guidance.

Yu.S.: — Orthodox kindergartens were created for the first time in the Smolensk region. We became the founders of this sphere of Orthodox education. How difficult was it for you personally? You had nowhere to get methodological manuals, educational thematic programs? How did you get out of this situation?

– Officially, of course, there is a template. The Synodal Department of Religious Education and Catechism of the Moscow Patriarchate has an example of such a program. But she is a kind of layout, a “fish”. Further, teachers themselves must do everything to meet the time and develop children. As I was once told: “We don’t want our children to be controlled, let them govern better.” Therefore, in order for our children to grow up and be able to do something in the country, to save their country, they need good teachers. And how can we “bend” this Orthodox line? We got lucky here, let’s say. Amendments were made to the Federal Law “On Education in the Russian Federation”. There are wonderful comments on the changes made – in simple words, we have the right to 40% of Orthodox education by law. Thus, in our garden, 60% percent is secular, 40% is Orthodox education. Being an Orthodox kindergarten, we perfectly cooperated Orthodoxy with the recommended program, and we got a wonderful program.

As for the Orthodox component. Basically, all programs are written for children from 4.5 – 5 years old. But in the kindergarten there are very small children, from one and a half years old. And for them there were no such programs and recommendations before, with a focus on spiritual and moral confessional education. In any case, I have not seen it anywhere and have not met it. We ourselves wrote this program, based on the characteristics of age psychology. This is an author’s program. It passed the confessional presentation and we were allowed to work on it. Here is a unique experience. I boldly say this, because I know for sure that there are no such programs for children anywhere else.

Yu.S.: — Would you like to extend this program to the other 8 gardens of the Russian Federation?

– Everyone can see it on our website. We have a system. Children go through nine key themes per year. They are taken from the immediate environment of the child. For example, “God’s gifts.” During the study of this topic, children with teachers make juice, make jam, cook. Here we have three “main whales”: this is the semantic paradigm, “empire” and an environment that takes into account age characteristics. Why did I say “empire”? This is an experience. That is, the child must touch, feel, see everything.

М.К.: — We know that you work closely with the Military Academy. Before the pandemic, parents say, cadets and children came to kindergarten on Defender of the Fatherland Day, played Merry Starts, fried pancakes on Maslenitsa …

– Yes, we also hold concerts at the Academy. On the day of the martyr Mercury, they have a conference. And we, or rather our pupils, participate in it with musical numbers. A very touching picture.

Yu.S.: — You have a completely different conceptual approach to your whole life. That is, children should have a completely different attitude?

– Our forte is always to take into account the peculiarities of age psychology. We work with children from one and a half years old. At a year and a half, the child still speaks little. Attention in children is situational, there is no imagination. If we take the topic “Prayer”, then we understand that at this age, objective activity is dominant. We show the icon and give a verbal label: “This is an icon.” That is, we pronounce a word denoting one or another subject on the topic: “On the icon is the Mother of God, the Infant Lord.” Literally a few phrases, children quickly remember with repeated repetition. The way in our garden is Orthodox – there are icons in every group, in every room. The icon itself mobilizes us and, probably, reassures us.

Older children read the morning rule, prayers before and after meals, and before going outside. Some prayers they know by heart. While reading the morning rule, the children read prayers for the health of their parents, sisters, brothers, godparents, and our priests. Be sure to remember those who are sick in the group.

We always say that our children are different, they are very different from other children. I’m not saying this to make myself stand out, but it’s a fact. They live in a different environment and, of course, this environment also somehow influences, changes their attitude towards each other in the team. Older children know how to negotiate.

I foresee the question: “What next?”. Not everyone goes to an Orthodox gymnasium, many go to ordinary schools, but they always know what to do in a difficult moment – you need to pray, read “Our Father”, or say: “Lord help!”.

M.K.: — How do children spend a typical day in an Orthodox kindergarten?

– I would like to note that the age of children in our kindergarten is from one and a half to seven years. This is about 100 people. Our kindergarten has become a family one. My pupil is already working among the educators. Grandchildren of our employees come to us, children, nephews, grandchildren, brothers and sisters of our graduates come to us.

In the nursery, the morning begins with tactile hugs. With older children it’s different: we teach children greetings: “Good morning”, “Good afternoon” – such expressions that many have forgotten, but we cultivate politeness and etiquette.

Older children start the day with a prayer, which is read together with the teacher. For younger children, the teacher reads the prayer. In the nursery group – we say in chorus: “Lord, bless!”. After prayer, the children take holy water. If it is an academic year, they have special classes, direct educational activities. This is exactly what is required. After classes, a walk and other entertainment, games usually follow. Part of the classes that are additional are included in our system. This is mandatory teaching of chess, English, choreography. For children, an associate professor from the Smolensk State Academy of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism conducts physiotherapy exercises. There is an art studio – additional drawing. Be sure to include in the program preparation for school for children of the older group.

Yu.S.: — Irina Viktorovna, now a somewhat general question. Do you think the role of Orthodox education, including preschool education, should grow? Or is it possible to “squeeze” with this and need to be careful?

– There are two options. Like everything in our dual world, this is good, because morality and morality are values ​​that do not need to be “hammered”. Sorry for the slang. It’s just that a child grows up in this, lives and perceives it as the norm. But the second part concerns the one who performs the role of the teacher. When electives began to be introduced in Russia, we saw many distortions. People who themselves are far from the Church sometimes taught the basics of Orthodox culture. The point here is not whether a person goes to church or not, this is not an indicator of a teacher. Of course, any Orthodox will go to church – this, of course, but is not an indicator of the spiritual education, the spiritual experience of the teacher. But if there is no philosophical view of Orthodoxy, as a value development of mankind in general, this is not entirely, probably, correct. All good things are included in the word “love”. Love is God. But it is possible to “squeeze”. This is my opinion: worthy people who themselves understand and know where they lead children should teach children.

Yu.S.: — Can any parent bring their child to you today?

– We do not conduct tests, so to speak, “for Orthodoxy”. We do not test either children or parents for this, because faith must be born. Not all people are born with it. We take everyone. Therefore, the documents are the same as in any other municipal kindergarten. Accordingly, since we are licensed, we have the right to educational activities – and we comply with the legislation of the Russian Federation. Therefore, we carry out all local acts that are required of us.

Chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate External Church Relations, rector Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk gave an interview to the French-language edition Orthodoxie.com.

— Since 2009 you have been the chairman of the Department for External Church Relations. This Department is a special body within the Moscow Patriarchate. Can you tell us when and why the Department was created?

— The Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate was established in 1946, when the Russian Orthodox Church was just beginning to rise from the ashes like a phoenix after more than two decades of brutal persecution. During the persecution of the 1920s and 1930s, almost nothing was left of the Russian Orthodox Church: almost all the churches were either destroyed or rebuilt, almost all the priests were physically destroyed, shot. Of the more than a hundred bishops that our Church had before the revolution, before the start of the war, only four active bishops remained at large – and this is for the entire Russian Orthodox Church!

During the war the situation changed because the Church took a patriotic position. The state appreciated this, and the persecution was temporarily not only stopped, but weakened.

In 1946, when the whole country was recovering from the war, the Church decided to restore its ties, first of all, with the Russian Diaspora – those Orthodox Christians who had been cut off from the Moscow Patriarchate for many years. For the sake of these goals, as well as in order to resume the dialogue with other Christian denominations, which was started back in pre-revolutionary times, the Department for External Church Relations was created (since 2000 – the Department for External Church Relations).

At first there were only a few people in it: one metropolitan, one secretary. Gradually the staff of the Department increased. Now, after 75 years, we employ about a hundred people, if we talk about the full staff, including drivers, cleaners, technical staff. If we mean those employees who work on specific topics – on interaction with the Orthodox Churches, with the Catholic Church and other Christian denominations, with other religions, then this is about forty people. There is an anecdote: Pope John Paul II was asked how many people work in the Vatican. He replied, “About half.” So, in our Department for External Church Relations, about half of the employees are those who work directly in specific thematic areas.

— You came to Paris on the occasion of the sixth anniversary of the meeting between Pope Francis and Patriarch Kirill. You met with Cardinal Kurt Koch, head of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, to prepare the second meeting between the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Primate of the Roman Catholic Church. Do you know the date and place of the next meeting? Maybe it will take place in Moscow?

– You want to be the first to know the date and place, but, unfortunately, you will not be able to do this, because we cannot announce them yet, this is being discussed now. The discussion involves different parties, and all must come to a full agreement. But I can say that we have planned this meeting for 2022. I hope that neither the pandemic nor other circumstances will prevent the meeting from taking place.

— In Western Europe, the Russian Orthodox Church is represented by three structures: there are parishes of the Patriarchal Exarchate, the Archdiocese of Western European Parishes of the Russian Tradition, and the Russian Church Abroad. Don’t you think that this structure is already outdated and that the historical reasons for their separate management are no longer relevant? The project of the metropolitan district, proposed during the time of Patriarch Alexy, was not implemented. The reason for the failure was that at that time the Russian Church Abroad was not yet in communion with the Moscow Patriarchate, and the Archdiocese was under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. Now everything has changed. Don’t you think that it is necessary to work again in this direction?

— I don’t think that we should now be engaged in somehow unifying the three structures that exist in Western Europe. Each of them has its own history and traditions. Sometimes between these structures there are certain frictions and misunderstandings due to the fact that they have different perceptions of certain essential moments of church life. But it seems to me that we absolutely should not now be engaged in the fact that everyone, as they say in Russia, is “cut with the same brush”, trying to force everyone to live by the same rules.

I think the most important thing is what we have already achieved: that we are all united in the bosom of the Russian Orthodox Church, that the long-term division that existed in the Russian emigration has finally been overcome, that we can serve together, take communion together. This is the main thing.

And to unify structures, calendars is all a question of the future. I don’t think it’s in the near future. We know that, for example, the Russian Church Abroad and the Archdiocese have their own locally venerated saints who are not recognized as such by the Moscow Patriarchate. But so what? This is history. Sooner or later, the history of the Church will dot the i’s. But in no case should we rush, in no case should we try to break the established traditions, to impose on one jurisdiction the point of view of another jurisdiction. We need to be patient and live peacefully together, thanking God for the unity that we have achieved.

— Concerning inter-Orthodox relations: why didn’t the Moscow Patriarchate grant autocephaly to the self-governing Ukrainian Church before the Cretan Council, which could possibly have avoided the current difficulties?

— Autocephaly can be given when asked for. But if no one asks, if the church people, the episcopate, the clergy are against it, how can we impose autocephaly on the entire Local Church, which not only does not ask for it, but also has a very negative attitude towards the very idea of ​​autocephaly?

There are still some naive and incompetent people in the Greek world who believe that Moscow is forcibly keeping the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in its jurisdiction. Listen, how can we forcibly keep her, what means do we have for this? There are no funds. We can’t even come to Ukraine. For example, I have been banned from entering there for almost ten years – this is how the former president of this country, Mr. Poroshenko, decided. One day I arrived at the airport, they stopped me there, put me in a drive and then sent me back without any explanation. How can we make a difference in such a situation? If the canonical Ukrainian Church wanted autocephaly and asked the Russian Orthodox Church, there would be some process that would probably lead to autocephaly – I don’t know, it’s hard to guess now. But the Ukrainian Orthodox Church does not want this. The Ukrainian people want to stay with the Russian people. And this is not a political issue, but an ecclesiastical one. In no case should it be confused with politics, because political relations between Russia and Ukraine can be anything, but the will of the church people is to maintain unity.

How can we go against her? A person who goes against the will of the church people is a suicide. Here Patriarch Bartholomew went against the will of the church people. He imagined (or someone suggested to him) that the Ukrainian people wanted autocephaly, and Patriarch Bartholomew announced that he would sign a “tomos of autocephaly.” He believed that the entire Ukrainian Church would immediately go under this “tomos”, while only schismatics went under it, because they needed it for political reasons. Schismatics who have neither normal monasteries nor flocks. You look how they serve in their churches, watch their videos: the so-called “metropolitan” is standing, some “priest” is standing, but where are the church people? They don’t have it. The church people do not follow the schismatics, because they understand where the Church is and where the false church is, where the real bishops are, and where the self-saints are.

— Archbishop Anastassy of Tirana, speaking about the situation in Ukraine, said that three fundamental principles were violated: apostolic succession, the Divine Eucharist and catholicity. This provoked an earthquake, the shock waves of which reached Africa…

— I think that His Beatitude Archbishop Anastassy gave a very correct analysis of the current situation. In layman’s terms, either everyone must live by the same rules, or each Church will live by its own rules. For some reason, the Patriarch of Constantinople decided that he could live by his own rules, while other Churches should only obey, humbly bow their necks and recognize the divine and apostolic virtues of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which we had never heard of before… Suddenly they “appeared”, and it suddenly “turned out” that for 300 years we had been living under the false impression that the Kyiv Metropolis was part of the Russian Orthodox Church. But this was printed in all calendars – in the calendars of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Church of Alexandria, the Church of Greece and the Church of Cyprus. Until 2018, everyone recognized that the Ukrainian Church was part of the Russian Orthodox Church. And suddenly we are told, they say, it was all a mistake, it was violence, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church has always been part of Constantinople, and Patriarch Dionysius of Constantinople, simply under some kind of violent influence, signed the act of joining the Kyiv Metropolis to the Moscow Patriarchate!

We have published a whole volume of documents (almost a thousand pages in small print) that tell about the circumstances under which the accession of the Kyiv Metropolis to the Moscow Patriarchate took place. If Constantinople wanted to dispute this, where has it been for three hundred years? Why did he never challenge for three centuries? These are just crazy ideas that came to the mind of the Patriarch of Constantinople. We are talking about this with great regret.

And we warned him. He thought that the entire Ukrainian episcopate would rush into this so-called “autocephalous church”. He said: “I know that 25 bishops are already ready to transfer,” and His Holiness Patriarch Kirill then answered him: “One or two will transfer. ” Here are two and moved. You know that in the apostolic community, which consisted of twelve people, there was only Judas. There are more than a hundred bishops in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church now, while at that time there were more than ninety. Two have moved on. That is, the percentage of betrayal is much less than in the community of the disciples of Christ.

We warned the Ecumenical Patriarch that this adventure would not lead to anything good, because we know the mood among the Ukrainian people, but they do not. He lives in his “Phanar fortress” and is isolated from the real world, from real church life. He listens to certain advisers who are either politicized or are some kind of adventurers. They give Patriarch Bartholomew false information. When Patriarch Kirill visited him at the end of August 2018, Patriarch Bartholomew voiced false information that he receives from his unfortunate experts. Based on these data, he did what he did. And then everything rolled like a snowball . ..

Take the situation in Africa. That we in the Russian Church have nothing better to do than Africa? Do we have little territory? We have Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Japan, China, Mongolia… Not enough for us, do we still need Africa? No. But priests from Africa turned to us and said: we do not want to follow our Patriarch in recognizing the schism, we are against recognizing the Ukrainian schism — give us canonical asylum. It was two years ago. We were in no hurry to respond. We waited and studied. We hoped that the Patriarch of Alexandria would change his position, we sent him signals. We negotiated with him, informally, of course. But he did not respond and did not change his position. First, he began to commemorate the schismatic leader, then he began to serve with him. And with all this, what should we say to the priests who turned to us: no, get away from us, because you should be with your Patriarch, who recognized the schism? We couldn’t say that to these priests. And we gave them canonical asylum.

If someone has a question why we created an exarchate in Africa, let him address this question to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Why did he create an exarchate in Ukraine? After all, it all started in 2018. He created an exarchate in Ukraine, on our canonical territory, and then signed the “tomos of autocephaly.”

Therefore, I repeat again: either everyone will live by the same rules, or each Church will establish its own rules.

— Vladyka, you said that Patriarch Bartholomew was not aware of the state of affairs in Ukraine, but perhaps the Patriarch of Alexandria was better informed? He visited Odessa… Why did his position towards the newly formed Church of Constantinople change so dramatically? For what reasons?

– I have a personal opinion on this, based on insider information I receive. I think the Patriarch of Alexandria was forced to make such a decision. It was a forced decision. I know that he was blackmailed, he was threatened. I will not say who and what, but we have such information. Therefore, I perceive with great regret that the Patriarch of Alexandria took such a position. I guess he didn’t do it willingly.

But that’s no excuse for what happened. He has repeatedly stated and voiced his new position. Therefore, after two years of patient and humble waiting, we made a difficult and forced decision: to accept these clerics into the Russian Church and create for them, as well as the Russian-speaking believers of Africa, of whom there are many, a Patriarchal Exarchate.

— The Russian Church was accused of having a plan to “invade” Africa. Some even say that this plan has been ready for 35 years. How about really? If the Patriarchate of Alexandria had refused to recognize the Ukrainian autocephalists, would the situation have changed?

– You know, I’m not used to commenting on crazy ideas. And I don’t think it’s right to build any hypotheses. I believe that if the Patriarchate of Alexandria wants to enter into negotiations with the Russian Orthodox Church on how we should continue to live and build relations, then the Russian Church will readily respond to the desire to conduct a dialogue. But I believe that the Patriarch of Alexandria is now being told not to enter into direct dialogue with us, but they are demanding that he take the side of the Patriarch of Constantinople.

Plans are already being hatched to recreate a kind of “pentarchy”. In the Byzantine era, there was the concept of pentarchy, when it was believed that the Church was ruled by five Patriarchs: Roman, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, Jerusalem. Then, after the break with the Pope, the pentarchy disappeared. Now they are saying: let there be a Cypriot Primate instead of the Roman Primate, and then the pentarchy will seem to be recreated. It is assumed that these five heads of the Churches will gather and condemn the Russian Church, the Moscow Patriarch…

First, this will not happen, because not everyone wants to participate in such a “pentarchy”. Secondly, is it that some completely new ecclesiological model is being created, in which there will be Churches of the “first class” and Churches of the “second class”? We have always lived in a situation where it was believed that all generally recognized autocephalous Churches are equal: ancient and not ancient, large and small. We have always been told: you should not say that you are a big Church – you have one vote, and the Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia also has one vote, the Polish Church has one vote and the Church of Antioch has one vote. Well, thank God, we lived with it. Now we are told: there will be ancient Churches that will be empowered to decide everything, and there will be some newer Churches, Churches of the “second class”, to which they will remain subject.

Let’s see what else the Phanar will come up with, how else theological or ecclesiological fantasies will be offered to us.

For many years I participated in the Orthodox-Catholic dialogue. There, under the leadership of the hierarch of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, Metropolitan John (Zizioulas), the idea of ​​creating a new ecclesiology was nurtured, which, in brief, is as follows: if in the Holy Trinity there is the primacy of God the Father and there is the catholicity of the Son and the Holy Spirit, the same should be in the Church at all levels: at the level of the diocese, the bishop is the first, and the priests are in catholicity, at the level of the Local Church it is the head of the Church and the bishops, and at the level of the Universal Church, it is the first and others who are in catholicity. This idea, which seems to reflect the model that exists in the Holy Trinity, is now being very actively imposed by Metropolitan John (Zizioulas) on both Orthodox and Catholics.

But we ask ourselves: where does this idea come from, where are its roots? It is not found in Holy Scripture. It is not in Holy Tradition. The Holy Fathers taught nothing of the kind. The very idea that the first at the level of the Ecumenical Church can be not among equals, but without equals, is alien to the Orthodox tradition. This has never happened. The Orthodox Church, for centuries, has polemicized with such an idea. It was opposed, among other things, by the Patriarchs of Constantinople: they wrote to the Pope of Rome that they did not agree with such a papist understanding of the authority of the former in the Universal Church.

And suddenly, concepts are coming to us from the Phanar that suggest that, it turns out, the Orthodox Church should also have a first, that the Catholic Churches are those that are in communion with the Pope of Rome, and the Orthodox Churches are those that are in communion with the Patriarch of Constantinople. What is this new ecclesiology that emerged, as they say, out of the blue (out of nowhere – approx.)? We cannot just start improvising on the ecclesiological field, we cannot create new ecclesiological concepts. We must remain faithful to our Orthodox tradition.

— If I understand correctly what Metropolitan John (Zizoulias) says, his ecclesiology is based on the triadology of the Cappadocian Fathers: St. Basil spoke of the Father’s monarchy at the triadological level… But is it necessary to put this on the same level with ecclesiology?

– Yes, what does one have to do with the other.

– Indeed, the question is what is the championship …

– It’s very simple. What is primacy at the level of the Universal Church? This is the championship of honor. This is a certain order in which the heads of the Orthodox Churches line up: there is a first, a second, a third, a fourth, and so on, but this does not mean that the second is subordinate to the first, the third is subordinate to the second, or that all together are subordinate to the first. In the canons, which deal with primacy and catholicity, it is said that the first should not do anything without the consent of the others, and the rest should not do anything without the consent of the first. And suddenly we are told: the Ecumenical Patriarch can decide everything himself. The Russian Church is against it, but he decides anyway, the Ukrainian Church is against it, and despite this, he makes the decision. Excuse me, but where then is the adherence to church canons? Where is the conciliarity? This is not conciliarity, but robbery.

In addition, they want to convince us that Ukrainian schismatics who do not have canonical ordination are full-fledged bishops. Listen, we know the history of these ordinations. We have published information about it, it is in the public domain. There are “bishops” there who were “ordained” by a bishop banned from serving and a deacon banned from serving, who pretended to be a bishop, but did not have not only episcopal, but even priestly consecration. The two ordained a third and signed the certificate of ordination. And when it subsequently became clear that one of the signatories was simply an adventurer, the name of one deceased bishop was also entered into the certificate. A person who is now a “bishop” recognized by Constantinople still lives with this paper. How can we recognize this? No economy can make a self-consecrated bishop a bishop. At least, if they had not been re-ordained there. But no one has re-ordained them.

— But isn’t the first one entitled to the initiative? Now the situation is very confusing. On the one hand, there is the initiative of Patriarch Theophilus III of Jerusalem, who convened an inter-Orthodox meeting on February 26, 2020 in the Jordanian capital Amman, where only representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Polish Orthodox Church, the Orthodox Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia, the Serbian Church and the Romanian Church arrived. Representatives of other Churches did not come. On the other hand, there is now the concept of “pentarchy”, which you just spoke about. Is it still possible to hope that all the Orthodox Churches will sit together at the same negotiating table in order to jointly resolve all hot issues, such as Ukrainian or Macedonian?

— The Patriarch of Jerusalem invites all Local Churches who wish to take part in the discussion in order to have a fraternal discussion of the accumulated issues. The Patriarch of Constantinople invites his supporters, like-minded people, in order to forcibly impose his will on other Churches. But this will not work, as it has not already happened in Ukraine. If it didn’t work out in Ukraine, then it won’t work out in other places. This is just naive and erroneous thinking, which, unfortunately, leads to very sad results.

– In this case, it seems to me (and I apologize if I’m wrong) that the decision to create an exarchate of Africa was not only intended to receive African priests who disagreed with the decision of the Patriarch of Alexandria, but was also a way of putting pressure on the Patriarchate of Constantinople to agreed to enter into a dialogue with the Russian Church to jointly solve problems. Am I wrong?

— We do not want anything from anyone. We have everything in the Russian Orthodox Church: there are churches, monasteries, bishops, millions of believers. We don’t need anything. We do not need either the Patriarch of Constantinople or any instructions from above to which we must obey. If the Patriarch of Constantinople wants to live in unity with the Russian Orthodox Church, he has every opportunity for this. He always says that he represents the fullness of the Orthodox Church. If he wants to represent the Russian Orthodox Church, too, he has every opportunity for this – he just needs not to do bad things to her, but listen to the voice of not only the Russian Church, but also other Local Orthodox Churches, act as the first among equals should act , that is, to help, support, strengthen everyone. Such a first among equals would be in great demand in the Orthodox Church, because someone is really needed who will take the initiative, who will invite.

But if a person is simply engaged in robbery and uses certain privileges “inherited” from the past in order to commit illegal and anti-canonical acts, referring to them, can this lead to the unity of the Church? This can only further and more aggravate the schism that has already occurred and will deepen until the Patriarch of Constantinople wants to stop.

We are not going to put pressure on anyone, we are not going to force, force or induce anything. If the Patriarch of Constantinople or the Patriarch of Alexandria want dialogue, we are always open to it. We were open even before Patriarch Bartholomew committed his lawless deeds, otherwise Patriarch Kirill would not have gone to Istanbul to try to convince the Patriarch of Constantinople. We are open to dialogue even now.

— So you are now waiting for the Patriarch of Constantinople to agree to enter into a dialogue?

— We do not expect anything from the Patriarch of Constantinople. Let him answer for his deeds at the Last Judgment and at the court of church history. This is his business, his responsibility. It doesn’t concern us at all now. We broke off communion with the Patriarch of Constantinople, and for us the problems he creates are not problems.

Look at what has been happening to the Russian Orthodox Church in the last 30+ years. How many times they attacked the Russian Church, how many times they tried to take something away from it, but it grows and grows. More and more churches are being built, more and more monasteries are being opened, those who have been separated are joining the Russian Church. The Russian Church Abroad has joined, the Archdiocese of Western European parishes of the Russian tradition has joined. As St. John of Damascus said, God turns even the evil deeds of people to good consequences. This is what is happening with the Russian Church. Therefore, we have no reason to mourn. We have only reasons for joy and gratitude to God for what we see happening in our Church.

I remember what happened 35 or 40 years ago when I came to the Russian Church. It was a small persecuted Church under the total control of the state. Everything was forbidden, nothing was allowed – neither to publish books, nor to engage in charity work. The miracle of the revival of the Russian Orthodox Church happened before my eyes, and now it is impossible to recognize it. We see in this the great mercy of God.

We grieve for those Orthodox Churches that became part of the adventure to recognize the Ukrainian schism, but we thank God that the schism did not touch our Church in any way. Our Church, as it was one, remains one. It has been consolidated, and remains consolidated in Russia, and in Ukraine, and in France, and wherever it is present; and now also in Africa.

– Last question. You are the head of the Church-wide postgraduate and doctoral studies. Can you tell us about it: how and why does this educational institution work, are there new applicants?

— The General Church Postgraduate School is a higher educational institution that was established on the initiative of Patriarch Kirill at the very first meeting of the Holy Synod after he became Patriarch. And then I was entrusted to head this educational institution. Our task is to give a theological education to those who have already received a higher education – what we call postgraduate studies.

Also, for the first time in the history of the Russian Orthodox Church, we have created a doctoral program. That is, they mean not just a doctoral degree as an honorary title, but real classes in the preparation of dissertations that go through a very difficult defense process. At least seventeen Doctors of Sciences sit on the Dissertation Council, and the person who applied for a degree must defend his dissertation. This is a very large work, which is aimed primarily at raising the scientific level of our future clergy and not only. Not only clergymen and those who will take holy orders in the future study with us – girls also study at the OCAD, receive scientific degrees.

And for the first time in the history of Russia, scientific degrees in theology are now recognized by the state.
