The Best Gifts Don’t Always Come Wrapped Up Under the Tree

As we are ticking off the days until Christmas, our conversations are often tailored around how much holiday shopping we have gotten done.

The older that my kids get, the harder it becomes to meet the items on their list within my budget, and honestly these gifts will be outgrown or underused far too early.

But the holiday shopping conversations and thoughts about how expensive this time of year can be had me thinking about the best Christmas gifts that I have ever received, and SURPRISE- they didn’t come wrapped under the tree!!

The first of my best-gift-evers: was when my youngest daughter met my husband for the first time at the age of three months old, when he got home from a deployment. The second best-gift-evers, was my husband being discharged three months early from the hospital, so we could spend the holiday together – as a family.

Our best presents aren’t usually gifts that come wrapped, or even gifts that fit tidily under the Christmas tree. They are the ones that evoke emotions. Often these gifts can’t be packaged or bought, but are the most memorable. There are few gifts that I can remember from my childhood opening, but there are moments that were present-ed (pun intended) that will be remembered for a lifetime. Some of the below are some of the best, most memorable gifts others have ever received; while they weren’t all holiday gifts, all of these gifts have forever changed their holiday season:

Megan S. and her husband were on the other end of a frantic social worker looking for an adoptive family for a newborn. They had nothing, because they weren’t expecting to adopt for a while yet…but the social worker and birth mother thought the couple were the perfect fit to raise the little boy… That was five years ago, their family has been complete since he was placed in their arms.

Samantha U’s Wounded Warrior husband underwent a leg amputation surgery which was best gift that her family has ever received. You’re probably thinking that is a weird “gift.” The amputation meant her husband no longer suffered from leg pain and could start to freely live his life again.

Lisa C. and Rachel B. were all greeted with words from their respective doctors that they were (and still are) cancer free. There isn’t much of a better gift than being able to continue to live.

Chris O.’s son John Doody (who is a Wounded Warrior) said his first word for the first time after being in a vegetative state for five months. Erin E.’s best gift ever was the day that a liver was found for her infant daughter, Willow. The liver has allowed Willow to continue to live, and the caring donations of their family, friends, and even strangers has allowed the family financial support to support Willow through their new normal. Nathalie O. shared that after her son was born, her husband took his first step, having two new walkers in the house was her best present ever. Doctor’s said he would never walk again after an IED blast; he proved them wrong.

Joy H. and Marly J. agreed that the birth of their child(ren) were their best gifts.

Joe F. provided the best gift ever to his children, when he surprised them by coming home for Christmas while he was stationed in Germany and they were living stateside. Boy, talk about a surprise.

When asked, not a single person answered that their favorite gift was something that someone bought them; each one, was something that meant much more than anything that has a price tag.

The history of the New Year’s gift – Children’s New Year’s gifts wholesale

New Year is a special holiday for most of us. A magical time when you want miracles, pleasant surprises and gifts. Children especially love this holiday. The Christmas tree in the middle of the room sparkles with balls and lights, and under it is a bag with cherished gifts. This is a real New Year’s magic, with its help it is so easy to feel like a little girl or boy, waiting with delight for the moment when you can already open gifts.

But who first came up with the idea of ​​giving gifts? Where did this wonderful tradition come from?

Unfortunately, there is no exact information about this. There are several versions. And one of them says that even in ancient Egypt there was a tradition to give gifts on the day of the winter solstice. The ancient Romans gave gifts on Saturnalia, this holiday was celebrated in December and was dedicated to the harvest. In ancient Rome, it was customary to give valuable gifts to poor people, and the poor, in turn, gave various things that they could do with their own hands. The tradition of leaving gifts for the New Year under the tree most likely came to us from Ancient Babylon. Its inhabitants piled gifts under the largest tree on the day of the holiday in honor of the god Tammuz. The biblical tradition of gifts for Christmas is connected with the fact that the Magi, having learned about the birth of Jesus, presented him with incense, myrrh and gold as a gift. Nowadays, New Year’s gifts are an opportunity to share joy and good mood with dear people, show them respect and love.

New Year’s gifts under the tree

In Russia, the tradition of putting gifts for the New Year under the Christmas tree came during the time of Peter the Great. The reformer tsar adopted this tradition from the Europeans and even issued a decree that obliged the nobles to install spruce trees in the house, decorate them and give gifts to children. Gradually, this tradition took root and went to the people.

After the October Revolution of 1917, the traditions of celebrating the New Year changed. The Bolsheviks tried to remove everything that was connected with religion. If earlier Christmas was celebrated, then during the Soviet era, the emphasis shifted to the New Year. For children, Santa Claus and the Snow Maiden were invented.

Gifts under the Christmas tree are accepted in many countries, but the gifts themselves can vary significantly.

For example, in Austria on New Year’s Eve and Christmas it is customary to give useful things, household appliances and clothes, in England various trinkets. Americans celebrate the New Year holidays on a grand scale and spend a lot of money on gifts. But gifts, as a rule, are given with a check so that you can return the item you don’t like. In the Netherlands, in addition to toys, children are always presented with a bag of sweets and pies “from the Magi”, in Ireland, children are often given figurines of Jesus and angels, it is not customary to give gifts to adults. In Sweden, there is a tradition of hand-made candles for Christmas. They symbolize warmth, good mood and friendship. But, nevertheless, in most European countries, Christmas and New Year are an occasion to please their loved ones with good gifts, so children get expensive toys, women get jewelry, clothes, men get perfumes, hobbies. The choice of gifts is limited only by imagination and financial possibilities.

Until what age to give New Year’s gifts

But, of course, most of all the New Year holidays, the Christmas tree, Santa Claus are waiting for children. For most, this is the most favorite holiday associated with gifts, fun and entertainment. And the question – until how many years to give New Year’s gifts to children is extremely rare. If the kid is happy with the toy, then the older child will be happy with the designer, and the teenager with a fashionable backpack or gadgets. And at any age, children are happy with sweets. We recommend buying textiles for New Year’s gifts for kids, they will definitely be happy, because this is a double gift – a soft toy or a backpack and a lot of delicious sweets.

Do not think about New Year’s gifts until how old to buy – please your child while he needs it and is interested!
