Student Life | James Madison Preparatory School in Tempe, AZ

Chores

Students will be assigned specific daily responsibilities for the cleaning and upkeep of the school. These assignments will take effect during the school day and should last only a few minutes. Students will not be involved in cleaning jobs involving solvents and/or chemical cleaners. This small but important part of life at Madison Prep will not only keep the campus clean, but will serve to promote teamwork, responsibility, and school pride. Students will gain a sense of ownership in the school and will be less likely to litter or otherwise deface the campus.

Houses

Students at Madison Prep are placed into “houses,” which are also called “homerooms” or “advisor groups.”  The high school has ten houses, and the junior high has four.  Each house holds approximately 17 students, and one faculty member is assigned to every house.  The faculty advisor serves as the contact person between the school and the parents.  The advisors work with the students in their group to help guide them through their academic career and their practical college preparation. The houses are designed to be the small family units that make up the whole school community.  All houses compete with each other for house points throughout the school year to earn the honor of being Top House.  House points are earned in a wide variety of ways, and a scoreboard that shows the current standings is kept up in the front office.  

Dress Code

Schools with an enforced dress code tend to be places that are more serious about learning, with students more focused on their schoolwork. The tone at these schools is more businesslike than at schools where students wear whatever they want. This atmosphere promotes better discipline and attendance, which lead to higher achievement. The Madison Prep Dress Code is designed with modesty, simplicity, safety, efficiency, and comfort in mind. The Dress Code applies to students on campus before, during, and after school. 
The whole issue of fashion competition among peers is immediately diffused when a school dress code is put in place. There will be no contests over who can wear the shirt with the rudest slogan on it. This sort of thing is distracting to students, and it takes needed attention away from the day’s lessons. Slovenliness will simply not be accepted, because sloppy dress leads to sloppy work habits and sloppy thinking.

And to those who say that a uniform robs students of their individuality, we say that it challenges students to express themselves in other, more meaningful ways. See the handbook for the most recent dress code rules.

High School government

​America’s system of government depends on citizen participation. Madison Prep’s student government is no different, and it includes all three branches of government: executive, legislative, and judicial. The Judicial Branch of Madison Prep’s unique Student Government includes the Supreme Court Justices, Clerk and Bailiffs, the Attorney General and staff, and a cadre of defense attorneys. The Supreme Court hears all misdemeanor cases, which come to the court as tickets written by teachers or upperclassmen. Any student with such a ticket is summoned for a preliminary hearing, at which hearing a plea (guilty or not guilty) is entered. If guilty, the judges determine the student’s sentence. If not guilty, then a trial is scheduled, cases are built by the Attorney General and the defense attorney(s), and witnesses are deposed in preparation for the trial.  
The nine justices on the Supreme Court are appointed by the Student Body President and confirmed by the Senate (senators are made up of 2 students from each high school house). Once confirmed, the justices elect their Chief Justice and are ready to begin hearing cases, a responsibility that they take seriously. 
The Court conducts preliminary hearings and full trials as needed, and these reflect many aspects of the American judicial system, including the use of the rules of evidence, protection of the rights of the accused, and punishments that fit the crimes. Each student is required to participate in the Madison student government and is evaluated based on his/her involvement and effort. Students will receive a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grade each trimester. 
Students will experience at least two of the three branches of the government during a four-year high school career, and they might, in some cases, change branches during a school year in order to enhance the experiential nature of this learning process.  
We are devoting time and resources to actualizing student and faculty participation in each branch, with checks and balances on the limited powers defined for each. Real legislation will be drafted, real compromises will be reached in the passage of bills, and real decisions will be made regarding school functions, social activities, enrichment club activities, student fundraising, and other appropriate student issues in accordance with the School Constitution. The student government also will be responsible each trimester for choosing a community service project for the school population to carry out in the larger Phoenix area community. 
As in the American system, the legislative branch will draft and pass legislation, the executive branch will sign or veto passed legislation and enforce signed legislation, and the judicial branch will adjudicate alleged breaches of campus rules. Naturally, school administration will deal with egregious student infractions, transcending the student government. In order to keep the government focused and moving ahead, the president will address the student body with a prepared speech at least once a year. 

As in the American system, a free press is essential. In the Madison Prep system, a small number of students and one faculty member will stand outside the student government to report on its activities via The Federalist, the student newspaper.

JH Student Government

The James Madison Preparatory Junior High government was set up for two reasons. First, to train the junior high students in the way of the government system. This is a small way to prepare them for the experience of our student government here in the high school when they move on.  The second reason the council was created was to give the middle school students a way to plan activities for the junior high. Last year they council planned a movie outdoor movie night, a game night, sold t-shirts and hosted an alternative food day.

Assembly

Each school day includes a morning assembly between first and second periods at which all students and staff members take part in the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of quiet reflection, announcements, and other presentations that promote learning and the Code of Conduct.   These presentations are often of a historical or motivational nature.  A different teacher runs the assembly each day.  Morning Assembly only takes about twenty minutes and is designed to build and promote school community cohesion.

Fees & Donations – JAMES MADISON PREPARATORY SCHOOL

James Madison Preparatory School is an Arizona charter school, which means that it is a public school operated by a private organization. As such, the school does not charge tuition for students to attend. In order to operate both its academic and extracurricular programs, it is necessary that the school charge fees, require deposits, and receive gifts in the way of donations to support the work of the school.

Arizona Tax Credit

Tax Credit contributions provide a direct state tax advantage to the benefactor, up to $200 for individuals and $400 for married couples.  Anyone can choose to give the AZ tax credit to James Madison Preparatory School.  Please consult your tax advisor for specific details. Activity fees for can be applied to your AZ Tax Credit contribution, but this must be declared at the time the fee is paid. 
Financial donations MAY or MAY NOT be claimed as AZ Tax Credit contributions for state income tax purposes. It must be declared at the time of the donation using the tax credit form.

A reminder, using any of the payment or donation options can only generate a maximum Arizona Tax Credit of $200 for individuals and $400 for couples each year.

Activity Fee Payment

Activity fees are charged to students by the school for extracurricular activities in fine arts, athletics and clubs.   Activity fees for extracurricular activities can be applied to your AZ Tax Credit contribution, but this must be declared at the time the fee is paid.  A reciept is provided for your contribution.

A fee is defined as money paid directly to the school to cover costs of academic or student supplies.  Fees are non-refundable and may not be claimed as donations for income tax or other purposes because there is a direct benefit, service, or product received by the student for the fee.  Fees may or may not be optional.  Examples of supplies for which fees are charged include: computer usuage, field trips, student travel, student ID, special school outings, or DVD’s or recordings of school events, and yearbooks.   The amount of the fee is set by administration. Parents and students are notified of fees in writing in enrollment materials, in the Family Handbook, in the Extracurricular handbook, or in specific handouts provided by a teacher, coach, or administration. The school provides a receipt for all fees. ​​

Charitable Donation

    Financial- These are direct monetary gifts made to the school.  Many Valley employers will match these donations.  Please consult your tax advisor for specific details. 
    Material– Equipment, supplies, etc., given by individuals, corporations, or other organizations seeking to help Madison Prep.  
    In-Kind- Volunteer time, services rendered, or other gifts of your time or help on behalf of the school. Many Valley employers provide matching financial donations for in-kind donations to Madison Prep from their employees.

HOW PAYMENTS ARE MADE

All payments are made through PayPal. PayPal has an option to complete payments as a guest with a debit or credit card that do not require you to have or create a PayPal account. Please visit the payment page and fill out the receipt questionnaire and then select the type of fee or donation to complete your payment through PayPal.

DONATIONS THROUGH MAIL

If you would like to mail in a donation, please download the tax credit form for mailing and payment information. Cash, check, and card donations can also be submitted directly to the school in the front office.

In the event there are more students who desire to attend an ASU Preparatory Academy campus than there are seats available, a public lottery will be held to determine which students will be admitted and which students will be placed on the waiting list, as well as the order of the waitlist. This is done in accordance with A.R.S 15-184. The lottery is per campus and grade – not all campuses/grades have a waitlist.

All forms submitted by 12 p.m. on the Friday before the lottery are recognized as lottery participants. Those applicants not meeting the deadline will be placed on a first-come, first-serve basis after the lottery participants. Applicants who are offered enrollment will receive a call with instructions on how to accept the seat and complete registration paperwork. The Lottery for the upcoming school year is held on the 2nd Tuesday of December for all grades.

Guardianship Requirements

All students enrolling must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. If you are the legal guardian, you will need to provide one of the following items:

• Current Valid Court Order
• Arizona Court Appointed Guardianship Papers
• Documentation from Superior Court of Arizona showing the pending court date for your Guardianship hearing. Final papers must be provided within a week of the hearing date.

K-12 Procedures

After the lottery has taken place and as seats become available, the next family on the waitlist will be contacted and given an offer of enrollment. Please be prepared to provide the following:

• Within 24 hours of the contact phone call and/or email, the family will need to advise ASU Preparatory Academy of their interest in accepting the seat being offered.
• Within 48 hours of accepting the seat, the family must submit all documents listed in the Enrollment Offer email they receive. Once all completed paperwork is submitted, families will receive confirmation of receipt.
• Students are not officially enrolled until all paperwork has been received and the proper notification from the school official has occurred.
• Please do not withdraw your child from their current school until all of the above procedures have occurred.

If the 24 and/or 48 hour deadlines are not met by families, we will recognize this as a decline of the seat offered and your child will be removed from the waitlist.

New students enrolling with ASU Preparatory Academy after the first day of school must be in attendance within 5 school days of the acceptance of the seat.

What constitutes a sibling or what does it mean to have sibling priority?

ASU Preparatory Academy recognizes the importance of families wanting to have all their children attend the same school. The sibling priority will first be applied to those students that have siblings currently attending ASU Preparatory Academy. To those students who have been offered and accepted a place at ASU Preparatory Academy at the time of Lottery, all remaining siblings will first participate in their own lottery. If the sibling isn’t selected, they will then be placed on the sibling priority waitlist. Recognized siblings of currently enrolled students are given priority by being placed above the general public waitlists. Therefore, when/if a seat becomes available, a sibling is offered the seat first. Although we cannot guarantee seats for all siblings, we do our best to accommodate all siblings first.

Documentation may be requested to confirm sibling preference.

What constitutes a sibling

• a full brother or full sister living as one family unit at the same address or living at separate addresses;
• a half brother or half sister living as one family unit at the same address or living at separate addresses;
• an adoptive brother or adoptive sister living as one family at the same address foster brother or foster sister living as one family unit at the same address;
• a stepbrother or stepsister living as one family unit at the same address.

The school’s second experimental program is mixed-age education. The classes are attended by children of different ages, as once in rural schools. According to Fernando, such an education system allows for an individual approach to each student.

“We separate children not by age, but by ability,” he says. – In the end, it is important how a person works and what he is capable of, and not how old he is. Why does a second grader who is at the fifth grade level have to sit in the second? This is absurd.”

In general, there is little in the school that reminds of traditional education. In classrooms, for example, there are no desks. Instead, there are tables for groups of up to six children of different ages. Students work together and independently, each at their own level of knowledge and ability. During the classes, teachers have time to work individually with each student. There is enough time for this, because there is no traditional class hour either.

“We don’t have bells and breaks at school,” says 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teacher Diego Restrepo. – Calls only interfere with children’s work. Due to the cold weather, parental chats are discussing at what temperature it is possible not to send children to school. Perm teachers respond with reference to the order of the deputy head of administration and part-time head of the education department dated December 21, 2016. According to the forecast of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, schoolchildren from the Kama region may have a chance to stay at home this week. If the child is studying on the first shift, at the time when he should go to school, the temperature may be just at the level of -25 ° C, at which it is not necessary to attend lessons.

Before the arrival of Europeans Long Bay the area was inhabited by the indigenous Waccamaw tribe. Waccamaw used the river for travel and fished on the banks around Little River. Prior to the American Revolution, the area along the future Grand Strand was virtually uninhabited. Several families received land grants on the coast, including the Withers: John, Richard, William, and Mary. This family received the area around the modern Wither Swash, also known as the Myrtle Swash or the Eight Mile Swash. A separate grant was made to James Minor, including a barrier island called Little Island, now Whetis Island, off the coast of the Little River. ^{[12] :36}

When the American colonies gained independence, the territory remained practically unchanged, and the coast remained barren. George Washington scouted the southern states during his term, traveling along the King’s Highway. The Withers family remained one of the few settlers around Myrtle Beach for the next half century. In 1822, a hurricane swept R. F. Withers’ house into the ocean, drowning 18 people inside. The Burroughs and Collins Conway Company, the forerunner of today’s Burroughs and Chapin, purchased most of the Withers family’s land in 1881, and the growing community was named “New Town” in the early 20th century.
