How to enter an elite school

Education

The New York Board of Education Policy has approved some changes to the test format students must take to apply to Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Tech, and six other elite specialty schools.

The official name of this test is the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT). The Department of Education explained that the adjustment is being made in the name of fairness. They say that the disproportion has been preserved for years: in urban schools, two-thirds of the contingent are African Americans and Latinos, while in elite educational institutions these categories make up only 10%.

“By making changes, we are opening application opportunities for high achievers in all districts, even where there are no special prep classes,” said board member Aizic Carmignani.

What is changing? First of all, the logical part of the test, and more specifically, the section in which applicants are offered the so-called “scrambled paragraphs”, that is, texts in which the order of paragraphs (or sentences) is deliberately violated. The task of the student is to restore the correct order of paragraphs (or sentences). This is how intelligence, the ability to think logically, is tested. In ordinary schools, such exercises are not given.

Were “scrambled paragraphs” abolished solely for reasons of political correctness? Perhaps not only.

Laura Zingmond, who represents Manhattan on the Board of Education Policy, thinks something should still be done about a section that hasn’t been revised in 30 years. These “scrambled paragraphs”, they say, generally stand apart. They are not in any way up to state standards. What will be in their place now? More familiar to many answers to questions on the texts read on the principle of multiple choice, that is, you need to choose the correct answer from several proposed options.

So the changes in SHSAT are not that significant at all. For example, they do not affect mathematics at all. And all the innovations will come into force only in a year – in October 2017. So there will be more time to figure it out and discuss.

Larry Carey, president of the Brooklyn Tech Alumni Foundation, says the change makes sense: “It’s not right in public schools to test what they don’t have,” he said. However, he welcomes that the generally strict approach to elite school applicants will remain the same as before, and this will spur children to study harder.

I spoke to Brooklyn’s Little Genius Prep principal Arthur Regulus (Arthur Lutzker) and asked him for his comments on the new developments. The name of the school makes it clear that “little geniuses” are trained there.

“Yes, this will affect us directly, and we will also need to take these changes into account,” Artur Lutsker said. – Not everything is clear yet. It is said that “scrambled paragraphs” are cancelled. But what exactly will be in return, what kind of questions will have to be answered according to the multiple choice principle?

Admission to elite schools is very competitive, and a large number of applicants must somehow be weeded out in order to select the most capable ones. It is not entirely clear to me why the changes affected only these “scrambled paragraphs”. I am a mathematician, and, of course, I am closer to what concerns my subject. SHSAT tests are held in October. A discrepancy arises: eighth grade students are given questions that assume knowledge not only of what is taught at the beginning of the year, but of the entire course. Moreover: some of the questions imply knowledge of those sections of algebra that take place in 9th grade, and in geometry – in the 10th grade. So why not pay attention to it too?

By the way, many parents ask me questions on this topic: how is it that children are required to do what they were not taught? I’m trying to somehow justify this: they are looking for the most advanced students. However, in fact, it would be more logical to include questions on the material covered in the tests, but to formulate them, so to speak, “with a twist”, complicating it so much that the most knowledgeable and quick-witted could answer.

“Tests are being modified not only for “special” schools,” Artur Lutsker continued. – Since March of this year, significant changes have been made to the SAT – the test that must be passed for college admission. Previously, you could use a calculator to answer questions in all sections of mathematics. Now you can’t. Previously, the SAT format assumed a deep knowledge of the subject up to the 8th grade, well, maybe 9th, but not higher. Now more serious questions are included on the material that takes place in the 11th grade. I think it’s reasonable.”

“Golden key” to the door to the future

Long gone are the days when a person’s fate from birth was determined by his origin. Instead of aristocracy in America today, meritocracy is when one is rewarded according to personal merit. At least in theory. However, in the realities of the education system, not everything looks so simple. It is important not only how you study, but also where. Sometimes a line on your resume about the school you graduated from is as important to your future career as, say, a Yale or Harvard degree. Elite schools can be of any type – public, charter, private. Some have a long history. For example, Roxbury Latin School in West Roxbury, Massachusetts, was founded in 1645 during the reign of King Charles the First. St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire, although “younger” (1856), is also striking with its imposing historic red brick buildings, green lawns, tennis courts and swimming pools. But most look quite modern, and if they stand out for something, it is their high level of education and the success of graduates that distinguishes them. In all other respects, they are very different – both in appearance, and in size, and in status, and in terms of admission rules.

BASIS Scottsdale in Scottsdale, Arizona is a charter school founded by Olga and Michael Block. It has been in the top ten in America for several years. It has become so popular that it gathers very strong children with SAT and ACT scores that are well above all standards.

Biotechnology High School (Freehold, NJ) cultivates future scientists. Two huge rooms for research work, four laboratories equipped with the latest technology.

International Community School in Kirkland, Washington, is a community school that prepares children for international careers. The selection takes place through a lottery.

The famous Hunter College High School in New York is also a public school and has a program for grades 7-12. But studies there can begin in the earlier years at Hunter College Elementary School. The demand is huge: in recent years there was a competition of 36 children for one place.

But if you got in and finished your studies up to the third grade (and only a few “fly out”), then the bright road to the future is open. Admission to Hunter College High School secured. Then everything will be all right. Here’s what the statistics say. Since 2002, 25% of Hunter College graduates have gone to Ivy League colleges. And in some years even up to 40%. Similar data for other popular schools – Horace Mann, Trinity School, Dalton. On average, a third of those who graduate end up in the Ivy League, with all the ensuing pleasant consequences.

So it’s worth going through all these torments with entrance tests when children are under extreme stress? Of course, each family must decide for itself.

For mothers and fathers, their child is always smarter and more talented than anyone in the world. Therefore, they strive to send them to schools for the advanced and gifted and do everything possible so that their children get there. But how to objectively evaluate the child’s abilities? For a long time, the only measure was the so-called IQ (intelligence quotient). This figure really says a lot.

Korean Kim Ung Yong entered the university at the age of four, solved a complex differential equation at five, received an invitation to work at NASA at ten. He is the owner of the highest IQ in the world – 210.

American Gregory Smith learned to read at the age of two, entered the university at ten, by the age of 12 he was nominated for the Nobel Prize four times, although he did not receive it.

In 2010, experts from the Center for Gifted Children in the English city of Solihull recognized two-year-old Oscar Wrigley from the United States as the smartest child in the world. His IQ is 160, like Albert Einstein. He had an amazing vocabulary – even at that age he could perfectly build sentences.

There are more than 1500 teenagers in the world who are engaged in scientific research at the level of adults.

Probably, many parents dream that their children will reach such a level.

But high IQ is not the answer to all questions.

“Ordinary miracle”

What does it mean to raise an intelligent child with a developed intellect? What should parents do for this in the first years of a son’s or daughter’s life?

These questions can be answered in Dr. David Perlmutter’s interesting book Raise a Smarter Child by Kindergarten.

The author is a well-known neurologist specializing in abnormalities in the activity of the brain and nervous system. At his clinic in Naples, Florida, he has worked with children and adults for over 20 years. He has two teenage children himself. So there was an opportunity to test medical concepts in my own parenting experience.

“The good news is that raising an intelligent child is easier than you think,” says Dr. Perlmutter. – You don’t need any investment in expensive equipment, you don’t need to hire highly paid tutors. It is only required to follow an effective strategy, which should significantly improve the capabilities of the child’s brain. It’s simple: play the right games with the child, put the right food on the table in front of him, maintain an environment in the house conducive to training the child’s brain. And at the same time, it is very important that he feels that you love him very much.

What about genetics? Doesn’t it define ability? Don’t smart parents make smart kids? And if this is true, how can genes be affected?

Many experts still believe that good brains are not born. They need to be created. From birth to three years of age, IQ can be increased by 30 points. Genius is, of course, an extraordinary phenomenon. But in this case, we are talking about an “ordinary miracle” – just about smart and developed children. Therefore, let no one be afraid of the difficulties of entering special schools and intricate tests. The path is long and thorny, but the results are worth the effort.
