Governor David Paterson intends to increase the number of charter schools in New York State from 200 to 460 to secure multi-million dollar educational grants from the state. “We’re doing this for our children, better education, and a better future for millions of New Yorkers,” the Governor said. “In four years, New York’s educational system could be one of the best in the country. ”
Recall that charter schools in the United States are primary (primary) or secondary (secondary) schools that operate on public money or donations.
Unlike public schools, they may not be subject to United States Department of Education (USDOE) rules, regulations, and bylaws.
Paterson’s proposal was supported by Big Apple Mayor Michael Bloomberg and school chancellor Joel Klein.
“If the bill is passed, we can create really great schools in New York,” Klein said. “The additional $700 million in funding will take New York’s education system to a whole new level.”
Unfortunately, for Paterson, Bloomberg and Klein, charter schools are primarily an additional source of income. However, few officials talk about the real benefits of these educational institutions.
Meanwhile, the teachers’ unions have come out with harsh criticism of charter schools. In their favor, they present the following arguments.
First, New York State is in dire need of professional school workers to fill 260 brand new schools.
Experts believe that it will take the state at least 5 to 7 years to develop an experienced workforce. Consequently, charter schools will be predominantly rookies or amateurs.
Second, the quality of education in charter schools is very difficult to control. As a rule, these institutions often use experimental teaching methods, the results of which are unpredictable.
Thirdly, children from charter schools very often face psychological problems in high school, when entering colleges and universities.
“Each charter school is an autonomous world in which the child feels comfortable as long as he is in it,” writes school psychologist Georg Hoffmann. “The main problem with these institutions is that they are too remote from the outside world.”
Today it is impossible to say for sure whether charter schools will positively or negatively affect the New York education system. However, it is already clear that after the approval of the Paterson plan, the sphere of children’s education in the imperial state will radically change its appearance.

Today, 275 charter schools are attended by 140,000 students from all walks of life, including English learners and students with special needs. Charter schools do not select students based on prior knowledge. Parents simply complete a short application and students are placed into the school based on random lottery results. Charter schools cater for children of all ages, from preschool through high school. There are such schools in all five boroughs of New York. college and future career.

Research shows that New York’s charter schools are some of the best in the country. According to the latest data, charter school students consistently score higher on public academic tests than their peers from other schools, especially blacks and Hispanics. In the 2018/19 school year, several charter schools delivered the best test scores in the entire state!
