principles, basics of teaching according to the methodology
Individual approach and regular retelling. How Charlotte Mason taught
Today, almost every professional involved in home education works on the principles of the British educator Charlotte Mason. She believed that children should not read simplified versions of works, and often asked preschoolers to retell what they read and write dictations. The most important rule for her was respect for the child. In the new material, we understand how Charlotte Mason taught

Who is Charlotte Mason
Charlotte Mason was born on January 1, 1842 in Wales. At the age of 18 she entered the Pedagogical College. At the time of Charlotte Mason’s work, pre-school education was just beginning to take shape. The older children studied in their free time. From 1861, Charlotte began teaching at an early childhood education institution, and later became a teacher at a girls’ high school. She then lectured on home education at the College of Education. Some of them have been published.
Charlotte believed that the most important thing in education is to see children as individuals and respect their interests. She always encouraged her students to do this. One of Charlotte’s lecturers formed the National Parent Education Union. These moms and dads wanted to teach kids the Mason Method. In 1891, Charlotte opened a school for governesses and teachers, and a year later, for parents who wanted to teach their children themselves. At school, she accustomed future teachers to the principles of pedagogy that she had developed herself.

Charlotte Mason’s Methods
Charlotte Mason’s educational philosophy was based on inclusive learning and non-compulsory learning. She tried to make the program for children diverse, to include different types of activities. Charlotte also believed that any educational process is based on respect for children.
- “Live” works. Charlotte believed that it was more useful for children to read the original works, rather than adapted, simplified versions. This rule extended not only to literature, but also to painting and music. Children, Mason argued, should study real paintings and, if possible, attend real music concerts in order to learn to perceive art and have emotional experience.
- Retellings. Mason, they seemed to be one of the most convenient formats for working with new information. The format of the retelling is not so important. It can be done in writing, orally, or even in drawing format. In any case, retelling in your own words helps children to be more attentive and organize knowledge. It is important for the teacher to listen to the child, not to interrupt his retelling and not to try to convince him that there are much more important details in the read fragment.
- Education of good habits. Charlotte Mason believed that it was important for teachers and parents not to force children to do something against their will, but to help them direct their own resources and energy towards the development of positive qualities: accuracy, attention, honesty, kindness.
- Uniform upbringing. Mason repeatedly emphasized in her writings that the lessons should not be too long. It is advisable for children to study for no more than 15–20 minutes, and then switch their attention to other activities so that the lessons do not cause boredom and apathy.
- Regular dictations. Along with retelling, they seemed to Mason an important practice for the development of speech and thinking.
- Various activities. Mason children are not only engaged in lessons. For a full-fledged, versatile development, it is important for them to study foreign languages, learn to write beautifully, and do needlework.
- Mandatory outdoor lessons. Charlotte Mason taught outdoors at least once a week and took her children for walks every day. Together with her, the students drew animals and plants, discussed what they saw, and conducted their own research.
- Uniform load. Charlotte Mason was convinced that children needed to properly distribute their forces in order to learn as much as possible. She taught all teachers to monitor the fatigue of children and give them proper rest.
During walks, for example, you should not ask your child how fast the wind blows or in what other countries foxes live. If the child is set up to enjoy the scenery and relax, this should be treated with respect. You can not overload children with endless facts – so they will become tired and apathetic.
- Favorable atmosphere for learning. Charlotte believed that in order for children to learn productively, it is necessary to create an atmosphere of love and acceptance. A child and teacher who are positive and friendly will be able to achieve greater learning outcomes.
Charlotte Mason’s Legacy
Mason’s teaching rules may seem obvious today, but they were innovative for their time. Thanks to her, family education became more popular, for the first time parents saw the advantages of this format: an individual approach and an independent schedule. Many modern homeschooling systems use Charlotte Mason’s methods. Some schools rely on her scientific works. Foxford students can also discover Charlotte Mason’s principles in their studies. First of all – an individual approach and the rejection of coercion to study, respect for the personality of each student.
