As I matriculated through CCSD it started out really rocky. I was bullied really bad and my mom wanted to put me in a private school, but couldn’t afford it. I have always liked school and made the best of it. I played in the band and was involved in various clubs. I am graduating in the top 10% of my class. I think the educators are overworked and underpaid. My mom took on a job to help other children so that they and their parents wouldn’t have to suffer as we did.

A vast majority of the teachers were very aggressive towards students and showed a lack of morals and lack of care for their jobs. They would teach very poorly as if they could care less about their jobs. With that said I had many teachers who were great teachers but the majority were rough. Another problem I had was that CCSD was terrible at planning just about any sort of event whether it was simply just an SAT or something as big as prom. The schools have let the students down a plethora of times. The next big problem I had was how the schools handled Covid. We missed out on so many things from dances to just the normal high school experience. I understand that at first everyone was worried which is fine but even after evidence came out that the virus isn’t as serious as thought CCSD decided to keep the mask enforcement and cancled all events. As a football player it was sadning to see that we could only have half of our normal fan crowd.

Charleston is a great place to live and all of my school experiences have been awesome! I couldn’t imagine having grown up anywhere else.

   Senior: The school district all-together is very well organized, and the school board cares for students. There is a lack of communication between the staff of the schools and school board, making it difficult to have specific details on specific events at times. This lack of communication puts students at a disadvantage because they are unaware of certain events occurring, and miss out on amazing opportunities throughout the public school system. Also, there are co-op positions available throughout the district schools where students can work in the main offices of schools with the administrative teams and get a better understanding of what goes on in a school during the typical school day. This provides students with amazing opportunities and a good place to jump off of into the real world, as they have would be prepared to be in a workplace in a school and already have the past experience.    SMS is a wonderful combination of a rigorous academic college prep school and summer camp. With small class sizes, numerous opportunities to explore the outdoors and the beauty of the Rocky Mountains, SMS provides a place for student to learn and grow. Our 10th grader is thriving while taking all of the “typical” high school classes but also going to Moab with the entire 9-12 for Desert Week. He has climbed 14ers and been learning quadratic equations. His teachers and advisors know him well. They provide inspiration and support.

6. Parent: My twin daughters have attended St. Mary’s Academy since kindergarten and are now seniors in the high school. I can’t say enough great things about the school! The small class sizes, nurturing environment, academics, and feeling of community is unparalleled. All the teachers have been absolutely incredible and know my kids so well. They serve as incredible mentors for the students and truly take an interest in their well-being. My daughters have developed into confident, assertive, curious and kind young adults as a result of their SMA experience.
