“Brand” tree: a biologist about the nature of the Tomsk cedar

TOMSK, November 1 – RIA Tomsk. Pinus sibirica – that’s what it sounds like
the Latin name of one of the brands of the Tomsk region, Siberian cedar. How
cedar differs from other plants of Siberia, where its relatives live and what
record-breaking cedars are found in Tomsk forests, RIA Tomsk told about this
Doctor of Biological Sciences Sergey Goroshkevich.

Cedar or pine?

Goroshkevich studies cedar at the Institute
monitoring of climatic and ecological systems of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Scientific station “Kedr” with breeding and introduction nursery
located in the village of Kurlek, Tomsk region.

The “branded” tree of Tomsk is called differently:
someone says “cedar”, someone “pine”. Goroshevich
prefers the word “cedar”, even though the tree refers
to the genus “pine”.

“Indeed, the Latin scientific name of this species Pinus sibirica is translated as “Siberian pine”.
translating poplar trembling. But we do not say that we are building a bathhouse from poplar
trembling. We build from aspen. So why translate Latin into Russian
the name of the cedar, if it already has a Russian scientific name – cedar
Siberian?” he explains.

Biologist says that Russian people saw Siberian cedar
approximately in the XIII-XV centuries, when they began to visit the Urals and the North-East of European
parts of Russia.

“Saw. How to call what you see for the first time?
You start looking for associations. The bible mentions cedar, for example, King Solomon
built his famous palace from Lebanese cedar. Russian people and
it seemed that in front of them was the same cedar – a majestic tree, it smells good,
with pink wood. So they called it cedar, and they were right to
100%,” says the expert.

European relatives

The closest relative of the Siberian stone pine is the European stone pine (Pinus cembra). He lives in
Alps and Carpathians. It was his ancient Romans called cedro. It is found only high in the mountains, where the climate
similar to Siberian: long winter, short summer. In appearance from cedar
not every botanist will distinguish it from Siberian.

Siberian character

“To take root in a new place, any plant
First of all, you need a suitable climate. Cedar feels good in
the European part of the country, it grows well, but without human help it is never there
will not settle, because native species grow even faster. In Siberia, on the other hand,
it is the cedar that gets the advantage,” says Goroshkevich.

Very hungry caterpillar: silkworm threatens Tomsk cedar forests

How is cedar different from other Siberian conifers?

“Nut fruit and longevity. Cedar seeds –
the main food for taiga animals and birds. Fir lives 150-200 years, spruce –
200-250, pine – 250-300, cedar – 300-350. And speaking of conditions,
which the cedar grows slowly, for example, in the mountains, in the north of the region and in
swamps, then here a tree can live up to 600-700 years,” says the biologist.

Long-lived cedar

One of these “age” trees was
discovered by employees of the laboratory of dendroecology of the Institute of Monitoring
of climatic and ecological systems of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, headed by Goroshkevich.

“We found a cedar that is about 700 years old, that is, it
was born before the Battle of Kulikovo. This cedar grows between the rivers Tom and
Obi, in the swamp. Yes, he can be called a record holder. The exact age of the tree
is established along the annual rings, but at the base of the cedar they are a little
are destroyed, so we set the approximate age – plus or minus two or three tens
years,” shared Goroshkevich.

Science and forestry

“Our main scientific task is research
cedar diversity and its interaction with climate. We are studying how
cedar populations function and reproduce in different regions of Siberia. Without
This makes it impossible to properly develop forestry and restore the “lost”
cedar forests. This work requires caution and a sense of proportion,” says the biologist.0005

The specialist emphasizes that the forest as a natural ecosystem in
does not need care. “To whom a man has come to help, that is the worst of all, because people
with their help, they weaken the competitive properties of the species,” the specialist adds.

“Only disabled plants need care. If
we will look after healthy viable species, for example, cedar, then
they eventually become incapable of self-reproduction. So
that our task is to observe, but not to interfere. This is when talking about
natural forests. It is quite another thing – man-made forests, or rather – forest
plantations. Here, on the contrary, without technological and breeding achievements,
get by,” he says.

Selection fruits

Sergei Goroshkevich combines his work with cedar

trees and shrubs” (LLC “SADiK”). This enterprise
Russian scale: not so much in size as in geography. cedars,
grown in the Tomsk nursery, “disperse” throughout Russia: from
Petersburg to Vladivostok.

“When I started 30 years ago, there was one variety
cedar. Take it and plant it. We currently have dozens of varieties. They
differ in many ways. Some grow noticeably faster than wild cedar,
others are much slower. Some are completely sterile and not a single bump
will never give. Others, on the contrary, are many times superior to wild cedar in terms of
yields, “explains the specialist.

Goroshkevich carries out breeding work in two directions.
The first is the selection of varieties for industrial plantations.

The demolition of cedars in the Tomsk region was suspended after complaints from local residents

“In an open field we plant cedars, specially grafted
selected clones. They grow beautiful, curly, thick. Through
for some time, much faster than in nature, they begin to give bumps.
The quality of the walnut is perfect. In Soviet times, these works were financed, and
For the past 25 years, there has been no interest from the state,” he says.

“These projects are long-term.
