  Recruitment Bonus

  Newly hired to the district on or after July 1, 2022 to provide service for the 2022/23 School Year:

  • Full-time staff – 4 hours or more per day (determined by position control)
    • The district shall provide a one-time, off-schedule payment of $1,500.
      • The first half ($750) of this one-time, off-schedule payment will be paid no later than 30 days after the last day of the month the employee begins service to the district.
      • The second half ($750) of this one-time, off-schedule payment will be paid no later than June 30, 2023.
      • The second half of this bonus shall not be paid if the employee is separated from the district for any reason before the end of their 2022-2023 work-year calendar.

   

  *PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of Education of the San Juan Unified School District, at a meeting of the Board of Education held on December 14, 2021, the terms of the recruitment bonus outlined herein will replace any other recruitment or signing bonuses in the district that existed prior to December 15, 2021. This one-time, off-schedule payment will not increase an employee’s base compensation for the 2021-2022 or 2022-2023 school years.

Who was Stokely Carmichael?

Stokely Carmichael was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago on June 29, 1941. He rose to prominence and later became chairman of SNCC, working with Martin Luther King Jr. and other Southern leaders to stage protests. Later, Carmichael lost faith in nonviolent tactics, propagating “Black Power” and allying with the militant Black Panther Party. Renaming himself Kwame Ture, he spent most of his last years in Guinea, where he died at 1998 year.

Joining the civil rights movement

Although he knew about the civil rights movement, for many years Carmichael felt compelled to join the fight. One evening at the end of high school, he saw footage of a sit-in on TV. When I first heard about the blacks sitting at the lunch counters in the south, he later recalled, I thought they were just a bunch of public hounds. But one night, when I saw these little kids on TV, standing on stools at the dinner counter after being beaten, sugar in their eyes, ketchup in their hair… well, something happened to me. Freedom Rides

As a freshman at Howard University in 1961, Carmichael went on his first Freedom Ride, a comprehensive bus tour of the South to overcome interstate segregation, he was arrested in Jackson, Mississippi for entering a “whites only” waiting room, and was imprisoned for 49 days. Unsurpassed, Carmichael remained active in the civil rights movement throughout his student years, participating in another Freedom Ride in Maryland, a demonstration in Georgia, and a hospital workers strike in New York. nine0003

Summer freedom with SNCC

Carmichael left school at a critical time in the history of the civil rights movement: the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee dubbed the summer of 1964 “Freedom Summer” and launched an aggressive black voter registration campaign in the Deep South. With his eloquence, charisma, and natural leadership skills, the newly minted college graduate was quickly appointed as a field organizer in Lowndes County, Alabama. nine0003

When Carmichael arrived in Lowndes County in 1965, African Americans made up the majority of the population but remained completely unrepresented in government. In one year, Carmichael was able to raise the number of registered black voters from 70 to 2,600, 300 more than the number of registered white voters in the county.

Through his efforts, Carmichael founded his political parties on his own terms to register the Lowndes County Freedom Organization. To satisfy the requirement that all political parties have an official logo, he chose the black panther, which would later serve as an inspiration for the Black Panthers. nine0003

Turnaround and Chairman of SNCC

In the beginning, Carmichael embraced the philosophy of nonviolent resistance espoused by Dr. Martin Luther King. In addition to moral opposition to violence, nonviolent resistance advocates believed that the strategy would gain public support for civil rights through the sharp contrast, recorded on late-night television, between the peacefulness of the protesters and the brutality of the police and opponents who oppose them. However, over time, Carmichael, like many young activists, became frustrated with the slow pace of progress and the need to endure repeated acts of violence and humiliation by white police officers without help. nine0003

By the time he was elected national chairman of the SNCC in May 1966, Carmichael had largely lost faith in the theory of nonviolent resistance that he once held dear. As chairman, he took SNCC in a sharply radical direction, signaling that white members were no longer welcome.

Black Spring

In June 1966, after activist James Meredith was shot and killed during his solo “Walk Against Fear” from Memphis, Tennessee to Jackson, Mississippi, Carmichael decided that SNCC volunteers should continue marching instead him. Upon reaching Greenwood, Mississippi, the furious leader gave the address by which he was best remembered: “We’ve been saying ‘freedom’ for six years,” he exclaimed. “What we are going to start talking about now is Black Power. nine0003

The phrase “Black Power” quickly caught on among the younger, more radical generation of civil rights activists. The term also found international resonance, becoming the slogan of resistance to European imperialism in Africa. In his 1968 book Black Power: The Politics of Liberation, Carmichael explained the term’s meaning: “Black people in this country are called to unite, recognize their heritage, and create a sense of community.” This is a call for black people to define their own goals, to lead their own organizations.” nine0003

Black Power also represented Carmichael’s break with King’s doctrine of non-violence and his ultimate goal of racial integration. Instead, he associated the term with the doctrine of black separatism most articulated by Malcolm X. “When you talk about Black Power, you are talking about creating a movement that will crush everything Western civilization has created,” Carmichael said in his speech.

Not surprisingly, the term has proved controversial, instilling fear in many white Americans, even those who had previously sympathized with the Civil Rights Movement, and exacerbating the cracks in the movement itself between old non-violence and young secessionists. Martin Luther King called black power “an unfortunate choice of words.” nine0003

Joined the Black Panther Party

In 1967, Carmichael traveled outside the United States to visit revolutionary leaders in Cuba, North Vietnam, China, and Guinea. Upon his return to the United States, he left the SNCC and became Prime Minister of the more radical Black Panthers. He spent the next two years speaking across the country and writing essays on black nationalism, black separatism and pan-Africanism, which would eventually become the cause of Carmichael’s life. nine0003

Early life

Stokely Carmichael was born June 29, 1941 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Carmichael’s parents immigrated to New York when he was a toddler, leaving him in the care of his grandmother until the age of 11, when he followed his parents to the United States.

His mother, Mabel, was a flight attendant on a steamship line, and his father, Adolf, was a carpenter by day and a taxi driver by night. A hard-working and optimistic immigrant, Adolph Carmichael pursued a version of the American Dream that his son would later criticize as a tool of racist economic oppression. nine0003

“My old man believed in this work that could be overcome,” Carmichael recalled. “He was religious, never lied, never cheated or stole. He did carpentry all day and drove taxis all night… …The next thing that came to this poor black man was death – too hard work. And he was only 40 years old. »

In 1954, at the age of 13, Stokely Carmichael became a naturalized American citizen and his family moved to a predominantly Italian and Jewish neighborhood in the Bronx called Morris Park. Carmichael soon became the only black member of a street gang called the Dukes of Morris Park. nine0003

Education

In 1956, Carmichael passed the entrance test to enter the prestigious Bronx High School of Science. where he was introduced to a completely different social circle – the children of the wealthy white liberal elite of New York.

Carmichael was popular with his new classmates; he frequented parties and dated white girls. Star student, Carmichael, after graduating from high school in 1960, received scholarships to various prestigious white-dominated universities. Historically black Howard University in Washington, D.C. There he majored in philosophy, studying the writings of Camus, Sartre, and Santayana and considering ways to apply their theoretical foundations to the problems facing the Civil Rights Movement. He graduated from Howard University with honors in 1964.

Name change and move to Guinea

In 1969, Carmichael left the Black Panther and left the United States for permanent residence in Conakry, Guinea. Changing his name to Kwame Ture in honor of President Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana and President Sekou Ture of Guinea, he devoted his life to the cause of pan-African unity. “America does not belong to blacks,” he said, explaining his departure from the country.

During this time, Carmichael married twice, first to a South African singer, Miriam Makeba, and then to a Guinean doctor named Marlatou Barry. Although he made frequent trips to the United States to advocate Pan-Africanism as the only true path to black liberation worldwide, Carmichael maintained permanent residence in Guinea for the rest of his life. nine0003

Death and legacy

Carmichael was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1985, and although it is not clear exactly what he meant, he publicly stated that his cancer “was given to me by the forces of US imperialism and others who colluded with them” . “He died on November 15, 1998, at the age of 57.

An inspirational speaker, persuasive essayist, effective organizer and expansive thinker, Carmichael stands out as one of the preeminent figures of the American Civil Rights Movement.
