Do you know that cut buttercups stay fresh for up to two weeks? And the fact that they have poisonous juice? In Shakespeare’s tragedy, the potion that plunged Juliet into a death-like sleep was made from a buttercup.

Garden buttercups no longer resemble their wild relatives: breeders have created cultivars, densely double flowers that resemble rosebuds more than specific flowers. That is why ranunculus is so in demand among landscape designers and florists.

  • How to grow buttercups from seeds?
  • How to choose a place for them in the garden?
  • How to care for ranunculus during the season?

Read more about growing buttercups below

Buttercup Ranunculus (lat. Ranunculus , from the word rana – frog) is a genus of herbaceous perennials of the Buttercup family. Representatives of the genus differ in caustic juice, which makes all parts of the plant poisonous. The similarity with frogs in these plants is manifested in the fact that many species of buttercups in nature live in water or near water bodies, like the mentioned amphibians. About 360 species of buttercups are distributed in the world, growing in the Northern Hemisphere in areas with a temperate and cold climate, but in culture they grow mainly garden buttercup, or Asian buttercup, its many varieties and varieties that adorn our gardens with flowering in the middle of summer for a month.

These products of the hard work of breeders, amazing in their variety of colors and beauty of forms, no longer resemble their wild relatives – creeping buttercup or field buttercup, which littered the crops of our ancestors. And all because in the middle of the 16th century, some types of this plant interested flower growers, and at the end of the seventeenth century, the ranunculus plant, as well as its hybrids bred by that time, became as popular as tulips or carnations.

Botanical description

Garden ranunculus flower is a herbaceous perennial plant with an average height of up to 65 cm. Its rhizome is tuberous, fleshy, the stem is leafy, branched, the leaves are tripartite, similar to dahlia leaves, flowers with a diameter of 8-10 cm are simple, double or densely double bright colors: purple, white, salmon, pink, red, orange, cream, yellow – many shades, in addition to blue and blue, there are two-tone varieties. They keep fresh for a long time in the cut – at least a week. But, despite all these virtues, the ranunculus flower is poisonous, so keep it away from children and pets.

Growing buttercups from seeds

Buttercup flowers are propagated by dividing the rhizome or by seed. If you decide to grow a buttercup from seeds, you should know that it is best to purchase planting material in specialized stores or departments, since it is difficult to collect seeds from your own plants, and their viability is low. Buttercup seeds are sown in late February or early March in loose, light soil, consisting of peat soil (one part), leafy soil (one part) and sand (half part). From above, the seeds are lightly sprinkled with soil, which is then moistened from the sprayer. The container with crops is covered with glass and kept at a temperature of 10-12 ºC, regularly airing and removing condensate from the glass.

Seedlings usually appear after 2-3 weeks, at which time the container should be moved to a warmer and brighter place (about 20 ºC), and a southern window with direct sunlight is most suitable for this. If necessary, arrange additional lighting for the seedlings. In the phase of 4-5 true leaves, young plants dive into peat-humus pots.

Planting buttercups in the garden

When to plant

In the middle of May, when the last night frosts are behind, the garden buttercup is planted. The best place for buttercups in the garden is sunny or semi-shady areas, protected from drafts and sudden gusts of wind. Buttercups prefer soil that is neutral or slightly acidic (pH 5.5-6.6), nutritious, permeable and light, and also moderately moist, since buttercup roots can rot in too wet soil.

How to plant

At the bottom of each hole, dug at a distance of 15-20 cm from each other, pour some drainage material – sand or expanded clay, then place the seedling in the hole along with a peat-humus pot, and if you grew seedlings in plastic or ceramic pots, then transfer the seedling into a hole along with an earthen clod, fill the hole with garden soil, compact it and water the area. This year, unfortunately, buttercups from seeds are unlikely to bloom, but next year, for sure.

Buttercup care

Care instructions

Buttercup care in the garden includes proper watering, loosening the soil, weeding, fertilizing, timely removal of wilted flowers and pest or disease control, if necessary. You will also have to make sure that the ranunculus does not grow beyond the limits that you set for it, and does not displace other, not so aggressive plants from the garden or flower bed. It is necessary to moisten the area with buttercups regularly, without skipping watering and avoiding waterlogging of the soil, since buttercups are very sensitive in this matter. As you can see, planting buttercups and caring for them in the garden is a simple matter that even a novice gardener can do.

Fertilizer

During the period of leaf growth, the ranunculus is fed every two weeks with fertilizers containing nitrogen, for example, Kemira-universal, and when the process of bud formation begins, potassium-phosphorus top dressing must be applied at the same frequency.

Pests and Diseases

Buttercup cultivation has another advantage: with proper watering, you will not have to deal with insects or diseases, since buttercups are very resistant to both diseases and pests. But if you overdo it with moistening the site, the plants can be affected by root rot, which is why it is so important to place a layer of drainage in each hole when planting. In fairness, it must be said that sometimes, in a very damp summer, powdery mildew affects the buttercups, the leaves of the plant can attract cabbage butterflies, and the roots – nematodes. If you find pests, use bioinsecticides to control them.

Buttercups after flowering

When the buttercups have faded, their watering is gradually reduced, and when the leaves turn yellow, watering is stopped completely. In August-September, ranunculus tubers are dug up, dried to remove garden soil, laid out in one layer in boxes and dried at a temperature of 20 ºC, then laid out in perforated paper bags and stored until spring planting. All manipulations are carried out very carefully, since buttercup tubers are very fragile.

Species and varieties

Most commonly cultivated in horticulture Orchard ranunculus or hybrid or Asian ranunculus (Ranunculus asiaticus). This popularity is caused by the variety of forms and the richness of the color palette of varieties and hybrids of this species. In addition, the Asian buttercup stands well in the cut.

All varieties and forms of this species are divided into four groups according to the shape of flowers:

  • Ivan tea: cultivation, properties, how to collect and dry

  • Chalmoid ranunculus, or African, densely doubled, ball-shaped flower;
  • French ranunculus, semi-double, having only two rows of petals;
  • Persian ranunculus, undersized single or semi-double flowers;
  • peony buttercup, double, with large flowers.

Popular cultivars: Bloomingdale Rose Bicolor – double white ranunculus with pink petal margins; Purple Pikoti – white buttercups with a purple coating on the tips of the petals; Double Pink Buttercup is a densely double variety with close-fitting pink petals.

Also grown in cultivation:

Ranunculus aconitifolius (Ranunculus aconitifolius)

Up to a meter high, blooming with white flowers. There is a terry variety and a variety with golden yellow flowers;

Anemone buttercup (Ranunculus anemonifolius)

Yellow buttercup, up to 30 cm tall, white-flowered;

Buttercup (Ranunculus acris)

In cultivation, only double forms of the species with large flowers of different shades of yellow are grown.

Of the wild species, Kamchatka buttercup, Illyrian buttercup, sulfur-yellow buttercup, Haast buttercup, Alpine buttercup, Altai buttercup, Pyrenean buttercup and Gray buttercup attract attention.

flower description, cultivation, care and reproduction

In the wild, ranunculus is a perennial herbaceous plant with thin, branched stems, finger-like or pinnate leaves and small, up to 1. 5 cm in diameter, flowers. Corollas are single, have 5 rounded yellow or white petals. In Europe, there are almost 40 species of wild ranunculus, most of them are weeds and are not used in decorative floriculture.

Popular garden varieties – breeding developments based on Asian buttercup. These are perennial ornamental plants with tuberous fleshy rhizomes. The stems are erect, depending on the variety, reach a height of 20–70 cm. The leaves are whole or dissected along the edges, bright green. The flowers are bisexual, 3 to 8 cm in diameter, with several rows of semi-closed petals. The buds are simple or double. Externally, garden buttercups look like small peonies, anemones or roses. Coloring is not only yellow, traditional for this genus, but also orange, pink, cream, dark red or burgundy. In the palette of shades, only blue and blue are missing.

Buttercups bloom in June. Each bud remains on the stem for 7-10 days. The vegetation period of plants is quite short – by the end of summer they wither, plants begin to accumulate nutrients and lay new buds.

Important

Stems and leaves of all kinds contain poisonous milky juice.

The main varieties and types of buttercup

Several subspecies of garden buttercup are used in cultivation, which differ in stem height, shape, structure and size of buds. The following are distinguished:

  • African : it is called chalmoid because of the characteristic arrangement of the petals, reminiscent of a Muslim headdress, the buds are densely double, 3–5 cm in diameter, pastel colors, dark pink and red, the height of the stems is about 40 cm;
  • French : this species is similar in flower shape to wild counterparts, cupped corollas, with simple round petals in 2 levels, diameter 3–6 cm, color light cream, pink, all shades of yellow;
  • Persian : undersized variety up to 30 cm tall, semi-double or simple buds, various colors, flowers about 4 cm;
  • Peony : very showy, large-flowering variety with tall stems and globular double buds, corollas 6–8 cm in diameter, total plant height up to 60–70 cm, shades of light pastel, bright orange, crimson, contrasting varieties available petals.

Flower name ranunculus

The official botanical name of the plant is ranunculus. Translated from Latin, this word means “frog”. In nature, many species live near swamps, and some grow right in the water, like amphibians. Buttercup got its Russian name due to the blistering action of its milky juice. When applied to the skin, it causes slight irritation. Calling an elegant delicate flower fierce is very harsh, a diminutive name was chosen.

Space for buttercup

Buttercups prefer indirect lighting. It is undesirable to hide them in deep shade or place them in the sun. Areas slightly shaded by low shrubs, trees with an openwork crown, mesh or wrought iron fences are ideal.

Buttercups are planted along the edges of flower beds and flower beds, used to decorate paths, borders, lawns. Due to their compact size and many years of development, many varieties are suitable for growing in open flowerpots and containers on terraces, balconies or loggias.

Planting buttercups

Rhizomes or seedlings of buttercups are planted in the ground in May, after the end of the return frosts. The soil they need: loose, slightly acidic or neutral, moderately fertile. Light loams, a mixture of peat with leafy or soddy soil are suitable.

Tubers are allowed to swell before planting. For half an hour they are soaked in a weak solution of potassium permanganate or a stimulant, then wrapped for a day in a damp cloth. During this time, the material doubles in volume.

Coarse sand is poured into the bottom of the holes. Deepen the rhizomes by 3-5 cm, placing them down with “legs”. Between plants, a distance of 20–25 cm is observed. Buttercups germinate in 5–7 days, bloom in a month.

Seeds for seedlings are sown in March: in trays with moist peat or a mixture of sand and garden soil. For 2 weeks, the surface is covered with a film. The condensate accumulated on the surface is removed daily. When sprouts appear, the film is removed. The seedlings are grown to a phase of 5 leaves, then dive. The first buds swell in a year.

Buttercup care

Moisturize buttercups moderately: 1-2 times a week. Abundant watering can cause root rot, and overdrying can cause leaves and buds to drop. It is undesirable to use cold and hard water.

When planting in the soil, you need to add nitrogenous top dressing, before laying buds – complex mineral. You can use mixtures for onion. Fertilize plants twice a month until the end of summer.

Flowering buds, as well as drying leaves, must be removed immediately so as not to provoke a fungus attack.

In early or mid-September, the above-ground part of the plants is cut off, the rhizomes are dug out of the soil, aired for several hours and placed in storage. They require crates or paper bags filled with sand, temperatures below 12°C and no light.

Propagation of buttercup

Ripening buttercup seeds rarely retain their germination capacity and varietal characteristics.
