NEW YORK CITY — New York City isn’t short on elite private schools, but some stand above the rest, a new ranking shows.
Niche released Tuesday its rankings of the best high schools across the nation with deep dives into metropolitan areas such as New York City.
Private institutions dominated the top 25 schools in the New York City area, with only three public schools making the upper tier, according to Niche’s 2023 Best Schools list.

Academic excellence comes with a substantial price tag: Trinity charges nearly $60,000 in tuition, according to the institution’s website.
Find out what’s happening in New York Citywith free, real-time updates from Patch.
With one exception, the top five-ranked high schools in the New York City area come with tuitions befitting of an Ivy League. Those are:
- Trinity School, Manhattan— Kindergarten-8: $58,385; 9-12: $58,495
- Riverdale Country School, The Bronx — $52,575 ($61,305, with books, supplies, trips and other fees)

- Regis High School, Manhattan — $0 (The Upper East Side institution is the only tuition-free Jesuit high school in the U.S., according to its website.)
- Horace Mann School, The Bronx — $42,940-$59,800
Bronx High School of Science was the top-rated public school in the city on the list, coming in at 16th.
The new 2023 Best Schools and Districts Niche rankings provide insight for parents on 92,743 public schools, 30,112 private schools and 11,820 school districts nationwide.
Niche said its rankings differ from others that rely almost exclusively on test scores and academic performance in that it also includes input from students, alumni and parents, as well as quantitative data from sources such as the U.S. Department of Education to evaluate teachers, resources and facilities.
As in previous years, the Best Schools rankings include categories for boarding, charter and magnet schools as well as schools for STEM and the arts among many others.

Bronx High School of Science
B Bronx High School of Science (commonly referred to as Bronx Science or Science and formerly Higher Science ) is a community magnet, specialty high school in the Bronx, New York, United States. It is operated by the New York City Department of Education.
Admission to Bronx Science requires the Specialized High School Admissions Test. Every November, about 30,000 eighth and ninth graders take a three-hour test for admission to eight of the nine specialized high schools. The test is extremely competitive: only 900 out of 30,000 applicants are accepted into Bronx Science each year.
Founded in 1938 in the Bronx, New York, Bronx Science is now located in the educational area known as the Education Mile in Bedford Park, an area in the northwest part of the Bronx. Taken by 8th graders, the exam has reportedly been taken by more than 20,000 students annually since 1999. Although known for its focus on math and science, Bronx Science also emphasizes the liberal arts and social sciences and consistently attracts students with a wide variety of interests apart from mathematics and natural sciences. It is one of the few two high schools worldwide that can claim to have educated eight Nobel laureates, seven of them in physics (the only other school is the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris). Its alumni have also won six Pulitzer Prizes.

name
The Bronx High School of Science is often referred to as Bronx Science , Bronx Sci , BX Sci sometimes just Science , BX Sci . [3] [4] It used to be called Higher Science and its founder, Morris Meister, is said to have often referred to the school as the “High School of Science”. [5]
History
Foundation
Old Bronx Science logo
Bronx Science was founded in 1938 as a specialized science and mathematics school for boys by the New York City Board of Education, with Morris Meister as the school’s first principal. They were given an ancient building with gothic gargoyles located at Creston Avenue and 184th Street, Fordham Road-Grand Concourse Bronx Square. Built in 1918 for Evander Childs High School, it has been successively occupied by Walton High School (1930) and supplement to DeWitt Clinton High School (1935). The original faculty was partly made up by a contingent from Stuyvesant High School, a daytime faculty. [6]
Principal Meister has left his mark on the school since its inception, for example by choosing as school colors “green for chlorophyll and gold for the sun, both of which are essential to the life chain”. [7]
Coeducational Expansion
Former Gothic building at Creston Avenue and 184th Street where the school has been located since its inception at 1938 to 1959.
Bronx Science began with approximately 150 ninth-year students and 250 tenth-year students, with the rest of the building used by DeWitt Clinton. As more boys began attending Science, the Clinton contingent gradually returned to its own main building. During the joint occupation, which lasted 2 years until 1940, both schools had separate teaching staff and classes, but the same supervision and administration.
B 19In 46, as a result of the efforts of Meister, the faculty, and the Parents Association, the school became co-educational, giving New York girls an equal opportunity to receive a quality education in a specialized high school that had previously been denied to them. This expansion of collaborative learning preceded its competitors Stuyvesant (1969) and Brooklyn Tech (1972) by more than two decades.
In 1958, after 20 years as principal, Morris Meister resigned to become the first president of the newly organized Bronx Community College. Mr. Meister personally chose the teacher, Alexander Taffel, to succeed him as chief.
Move to modern premises
Dedication of the new building in 1957
From the beginning, the Parents Association and Principal Morris Meister have advocated for the construction of the new building. Twenty years later, but under the direction of Director Taffel, plans for a new $8 million building designed by the architectural firm of Emery Roth & Sons were finally completed. [8] The new building was on 205th Street off Bedford Park Boulevard, in a predominantly institutional area, between DeWitt Clinton High School and its large football field on one side, and Harris Field and Hunter College (now Lehman College) on the other. 3 March 19For 59 years, students and faculty have occupied the new building for the first time, solving the problem of moving books from the old library to the new one in typical Bronx science fashion: On Friday afternoon, each student took home five library books. from the old building, and on Monday they were returned to the new one.
They entered a school equipped with more modern classrooms, laboratories and technical studios. The lobby’s main entrance is adorned with a 19m high Venetian glass mosaic panel depicting prominent figures in the history of science such as Marie Curie and Charles Darwin under the protective arms of a godlike figure representing knowledge, with this quote from John Dewey: “Every great advance in science stems out of a new boldness of imagination. ” The mural is an original work by author Frank J. Reilly titled Humanities Protection of biology, physics, chemistry . Legions of students over the years, lamenting the lack of pools, sarcastically referred to the mural as the “scientific swimming pool”, perpetuating the idea – perhaps apocryphal – that the choice was made to fund the mural rather than the pool within the pool. new building. [9]
This move was not without incident. During the first spring, rumors swept through the school that youth street gangs from various cities in the Bronx were coming to school, and that Fordham Baldies would shave off the hair of science students. It never happened. That spring, another incident occurred: for the first time, female scientists took to the field for outdoor physical education in sportswear, several students from neighboring countries, all men. DeWitt Clinton High School charged a dividing fence between their field and the science field. The fence stood, but the students trained indoors for the rest of the year.
When Bronx Science celebrated its Silver Jubilee in June 1963, President John F. Kennedy hailed it as “a significant and innovative example of a special program dedicated to the development of science and mathematics gifted students.” The president recently selected one of his alumni, Harold Brown class of 1943, to be director of defense research and engineering; he would later serve as Secretary of Defense under President Jimmy Carter.
Academics
Bronx Science is New York’s only specialty high school with a campus.

The school had a punch machine and students ran their programs at Columbia University’s Watson Lab. Science received its computer, the IBM 1620, a year and a half later.
Bronx Science students take a college preparatory program that includes four years of lab, math, English, social science, two or three years of foreign language studies, and a year of fine arts, with required courses and a wide range of electives, including honors and Advanced Placement (AP) classes, which allow students to skip introductory science courses at the college. Over 160 unique courses are offered. [10] [11] Students have the opportunity to conduct independent research and many participate in annual competitions. Intel Science Talent Search (formerly sponsored by Westinghouse).
In the biological sciences, students have the added option of taking a special honors biology course that includes additional lab work. Science electives include Microbiology, Physiology, Forensics, Human Genetics, Evolution, Astronomy/Astrophysics, Organic Chemistry, Electronics, Epidemiology, Neurobiology and others. [11] The Department of Mathematics offers standard AP courses at AB/BC. calculus and statistics, courses in multivariate calculus and computer science, including multivariate calculus and partial differential equations, and AP Computer Science A. The course in linear algebra and differential equations was first offered in the fall of 2007. [11] Students must complete four years of English with electives including Honors Speaking, Excellent Creative Writing, Science Fiction Studies, Journalism Seminar and AP English. [11] Requires a four-year social studies or history course that includes US and world history, economics – with electives in psychology, law, finance, and global studies, among others. [11] A minimum of 2 years of language instruction is required if students have previously studied the language in the year prior to entering secondary school. Bronx Science offers French, Spanish, Latin, Italian, Chinese and Japanese. [11] At one time Hebrew, Russian, Korean and German were also offered.

Classes that meet sophomore research requirements include Introduction to Engineering, Programming for All, Social Science Studies, Biology/Physics Studies, and Mathematical Studies. [11] Students have the opportunity to continue their research in their junior and senior years, giving them the opportunity to work with mentors and submit their final research paper to prestigious competitions such as the Intel Science Talent Search. [11] Students must also receive credit for two semesters of fine arts class or equivalent. Visual arts requirements are usually met during the Bronx Science summer program, which offers drama, music, and art. [11] Students typically “double up” on two of these courses to satisfy a visual arts need once and for all for one summer. However, it is still possible to satisfy the visual arts requirement by taking a music elective such as Jazz Band or an arts elective such as AP Studio Art during the regular school year. [11]
Health and physical education courses are also required, including step aerobics, cycling, strength training, basketball, hockey, badminton, volleyball, team handball, fitness and yoga. [11] The health requirement can also be completed during the summer science program in the Bronx in addition to the two fine arts courses.

Riverdale Country School – Kennedy’s school –
magazine its scale of territory, too high a price of education, but no less outstanding indicators of the level of education.According to the ranking of private schools in 2018, Riverdale Country School was ranked 5th best school in New York and is the 28th best private high school US
This school is over a hundred years old. The institution was founded in 1907 and is one of the oldest in the United States. At first it was a special school for boys, which had 12 students and four teachers. Founder Frank Hackett and his wife sought to create an American experiment in education in this way. Then an elementary school appeared in the same area, and after 13 years a school for girls was founded. Everything lasted until 1972, when all three institutions were merged into one school, which still bears the name Riverdale Country School.
The institution has two campuses, which are now its pride, because they impress with their scale. There are 1140 pupils aged from 4 (from the pre-school group) to 18 years old. The first campus is an elementary school, the second is for middle and high schools.
Riverdale Country School has two campuses, with a total area of about 110 thousand square meters, which is considered a fair amount of luxury. The building for the elementary school is located on an area of 32,000 square meters along the Hudson River. They study there until 5th grade. The campus has 5 buildings. It has a science laboratory, a small theatre, playgrounds, a greenhouse, 2 gardens, a gymnasium and 4 tennis courts.
And the remaining 79 thousand square meters of territory – for middle and high school. There is an arts center Lindenbaum, an amphitheater with 284 seats. Many ordinary Ukrainian theaters can envy such scope. The campus also has 3 tennis courts, 2 gyms, 2 buildings for scientific activities, 3 sports fields and a fitness center.
Another exciting addition to Riverdale Country School is the new Indoor Aquatic Center, which opened a year ago. It has a 6-lane swimming pool, changing rooms and a lobby. Outside the windows stretches a picturesque landscape – hills and fields, other buildings of the school. And the carefully selected material in its construction improves pool air quality and reduces energy demands by capturing heat from pool dehumidification systems.
Also, the architects have recently reconstructed the sports center and the educational building of the elementary school. Its layout now allows all students from 3rd to 5th grade to study in one place without separation and cooperate more with each other.
The large territory of the school resembles university institutions. But Riverdale Country School claims that this is not a pursuit of scale, but all for the sake of better education.
The school has decided to move away from traditional curriculum offerings in order to provide students with more challenging and innovative experiences. The philosophy of the institution has its own three pillars: Minds, Character and Community.
Minds – development of mental abilities. The task is to teach children: to think – creatively, creatively and flexibly, combining various disciplines, to read – actively, to ask good questions, analyze problems and make strong arguments.
Character – education of character, which includes training in self-control, social intelligence, ethics, empathy, and most importantly – to appreciate health and fitness.
Community – creating a community. This process encourages and requires children to create some idea, develop it, explore it and become the one who can change something and solve a certain problem.
Middle and high school students learn more hands-on, using their minds and knowledge, as well as their hands, tools and technology in the school labs.
This school teaches you to think, ask questions, analyze, constantly improve and be active members of society. Particular attention is paid to creative activities. Schoolchildren study music theory and test their strength not only in performance, but also in creating their own musical works. There are classes in drama, painting and cinema.
In the school theatre, students and teachers put on musicals and drama performances. Sports in Riverdale also provides a rich program. More than 80% of students are engaged in it. Athletics is one of the main sports in the school. They also play traditional American football and basketball, play squash, golf, tennis, learn fencing, swimming and many other sports, in which school students have repeatedly become champions at Ivy League universities.
The mission of the school is to prepare students for admission to the best US universities. Popular with Riverdale alumni are the prestigious Ivy League universities of Pennsylvania and Cornell. Also, many school graduates go to Columbia and Yale universities, Dartmouth College.
President John F. Kennedy, though not a graduate of this institution, attended Riverdale Country School from 1927 to 1930. It was at this time that his family lived in the city of Riverdale, Bronx County, New York.
In addition to the president, Riverdale Country School is the alma mater for Batman writer and author Scott Snyder, film director and screenwriter Joss Whedon, US Senator Robert F. Kennedy and many famous figures, CNN correspondents, actors, poets, political figures.
The cost of studying here is really impressive. To become a student of Riverdale Country School, it is not enough just to pass certain tests or pay a $60 registration fee and pass an interview. High school students here must take the ISEE or SSAT tests.
In case of admission, you need to pay $45,000 a year for tuition. And that is not all. About $7,000 is additionally paid for various services. These are books, educational materials, trips, technologies and equipment, products, lunches. That is, the final tuition fee can reach $52,000 per year. Although earlier this amount was much less, and additional services, like in other schools, were included in the price.
The institution also provides financial assistance, which makes education affordable for many. Talented children from poor families can take advantage of this. About $ 8 million Riverdale Country School is allocated annually to help such students. Although these privileges apply only to American children. Students from other countries must pay out of their own pocket.

Jon Favreau biography, Happy, photo, personal life, wife and children, height and weight 2022
Biography of Jon Favreau
Starting his career with tiny roles in low-budget serials, Jon Favreau managed to become not only a recognizable actor and super action character, but also a professional screenwriter, director and producer. Collaboration with Marvel Studio brought Favreau worldwide fame and a solid bank account, because many of his works have become leaders in the world box office and break box office records. He not only played the right hand of Tony Stark in the Marvel films, but also directed the first two parts of the Iron Man trilogy.

Childhood and adolescence
John was born into a family of teachers from the New York area of Queens. He is the only child of Madeleine Favreau, a Jewess, and Charles Favreau, an Italian-American. Despite the fact that his father was a Catholic, the boy was brought up in the Jewish faith and attended a Jewish school in the Bronx.
When John was thirteen, his mother died of leukemia. This tragedy was a serious shock for the teenager, but the father made every effort so that his beloved son would quickly recover from the grief that had fallen on their family and not feel like an orphan.
Charles, who worked as a teacher at a school for children with disabilities, often took his son to theaters and film screenings.
In elementary school, John stepped on stage for the first time in a school play and will always remember the feeling. True, then he did not even think about an acting career. In middle school, he became seriously interested in biology, but continued to rehearse with the school drama club. The set of plays was classic for the American school of the 70s: “Finian’s Rainbow”, “Little Abner”, “Guys and Dolls”. The latter was his mother’s favorite play, and when the woman died, John’s mentors decided to put this musical on stage as a tribute.
Young Jon Favreau
From 1980 to 1984, John attended Biology High School in the Bronx. He was considered one of the most hardworking students and, in addition to the main program, he took electives in medical illustration and drama. The drama school teacher, Mr. Feinberg, was fond of theater and advised John to audition for the Broadway production of Glengarry Glen Ross. Later, when Favreau entered Queens College, he auditioned and got the part.
As a student, John traveled to Chicago and was impressed by the performance of the local improv troupe. After his third year of college, he dropped out and took a job at the investment company Bear Stearns, while performing improvisation, participating in amateur theatrical productions, and increasingly leaning towards the acting profession.
Jon Favreau in his youth and now (2019)
In 1988, the young man returned to college, but he could not get a diploma – he lacked only a few points for successful certification. Deciding not to waste another year, John traveled to Chicago, where he joined the Improv Institute’s comedy theater troupe. At the same time, he was engaged in animation, ran to acting auditions, and in the evenings washed dishes in neighboring eateries. Over time, he realized that it would be difficult to achieve serious success in the acting field in Chicago, and moved to Los Angeles, closer to the Hollywood Hills.
Acting career
At first, John was interrupted by episodic roles in low-budget series, until real luck smiled at him. On the set of the sports drama Rudy (1993), he met actor Vince Vaughn, who became not only his close friend, but also his comrade-in-arms and companion.
Young Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn in Party People
In 1996, the buddies began work on the comedy-drama Party People, in which John wrote, co-produced and starred. The picture collected a good amount at the box office and was liked by American viewers. Favreau’s next bright appearance on the screen was the role of Monica Geller’s boyfriend in the cult TV series Friends.

But the action-packed comedy “Very Wild Things” (1998), in which Favreau appeared in the company of the brilliant Cameron Diaz, did not live up to the hopes of the creators and failed miserably at the American box office.

In 2001, Favreau made his debut as a director, presenting to the audience the sports drama “Everything is under control”, filmed according to his own script. John left one of the main roles for himself, and he did not forget about Vince Vaughn, who played his boxer friend. The picture did not become a hit, but was quite favorably received by the sophisticated American public and repaid the financial costs of the creators.
Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn in All Under Control
Favreau’s next directorial work Elf (2003) became more successful and took its rightful place in the list of good family comedies that must be viewed during the Christmas holidays.
Birth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Favreau’s film career was rapidly gaining momentum, and over the next five years, his filmography was replenished with a dozen bright acting and directorial works. In 2008, John entered into a multi-million dollar contract with Marvel and filmed for her the fantastic action movie Iron Man with Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow in the lead roles. The picture became the record holder of that year and brought its creators more than half a billion dollars.
On the set of Iron Man
Considering that 2008’s Iron Man was the first film in the MCU, Jon Favreau’s role in the company’s fortunes is almost historic, setting the trend for superhero movies and making audiences fall in love with them.
“I still feel like a part of this family. Although I’m not sitting on set in the director’s chair, I’m either filming another movie as Tony Stark’s chauffeur, or sitting at a premiere screening, or talking on the phone with a new director. It’s good to see where the Marvel movies are going. I am very glad that this is still an actual franchise. I feel like a proud grandfather!”
On the wave of success, the sequel “Iron Man 2” (2010) immediately followed, met by the audience with no less interest. But the third part of the sensational fantasy film was already directed by Shane Black – in four years Favreau got tired of producing comics and agreed to remain in the project only as one of the characters, Happy Hogan.

He also turned down a tempting offer to direct the superhero action movie The Avengers and instead played charismatic lawyer Menny Rizkin in Martin Scorsese’s acclaimed comedy The Wolf of Wall Street. The film, starring the genius Leonardo DiCaprio, received five Oscar nominations, as well as many other prestigious film awards, and became a real hit in 2013.

In 2014, Favreau delighted fans with the touching family comedy Chef on Wheels, and a year later he returned to working with Marvel again.

In 2016, the fourth film adaptation of Kipling’s immortal novel The Jungle Book, directed by him, was released worldwide, and a year later, viewers were able to see John in the already familiar role of Happy Hogan in the science fiction action movie Spider-Man: Homecoming.
On the set of The Jungle Book
It must be admitted that it was Favreau’s fruitful collaboration with the Marvel cinematic empire that brought him the greatest financial dividends and worldwide recognition. John’s superhero action movie Avengers: Endgame (2019) became the fifth highest-grossing film in the history of American cinema, and his new directorial work The Lion King (a remake of the legendary 1994 cartoon of the same name) has already become the largest release of all time in terms of the number of theaters and one of the main film events of 2019of the year.
Jon Favreau talks about making The Lion King
At the same time, Favreau did not escape reproaches for neglecting the original and the lack of a “soul” in the new cartoon. But it is impossible not to admit that the technical performance in The Lion King is a level higher than in The Jungle Book.
Personal life of Jon Favreau
Since the early 2000s, John has been happily married to the charming blonde Joya Tillem, who gave birth to his son Max (2001) and daughters Madeline (2003) and Brighton Rose (2006). Joya has nothing to do with the world of cinema, although she is not averse to appearing in the company of her husband at various social events.

Joint photos with children and wife can be seen on Favreau’s pages on Instagram and Twitter, the total number of subscribers of which is approaching four million.
