My son has been going to Small Characters since they opened in early 2019 and he loves it. He loves the amazing teachers and all the fun he has.
As a parent, I love the following:
– Amazing teachers and I can tell a big difference in how much my son has developed under their care.
– Lunch. For avery affordable rate, he can have a healthy catered lunch. No more lunch boxes to pack.
– Gymnastics bus and other activities. This is one of the few preschools we have toured that leaves the facilities and go swimming, go to a park etc. My son loves the adventures they go on. Every week, a gymnastics bus comes so the kids can jump around and learn about gymnastics.
Overall, I would highly recommend this place. It’s great!…

Thw last review is crazy. I feel good leaving my daughter in the care of these great people. Kids are kids so there will be incidents between them but nothing thats “not safe”. My family has been living in the Preobrazhensky district for more than a hundred years. Grandfather came to Moscow from the village of Rudnevo, Lukhovitsky District, Moscow Region, before the revolution. Here he worked as a packer at the Main Post Office. My grandmother was pious, she sang in the choir in the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord, which was blown up at 1964 year. A few nights before that, the inhabitants did not leave the temple, they guarded. Then someone from the executive committee came and assured that nothing would be blown up. The townspeople dispersed at about one in the morning, and the temple was blown up anyway. However, now it is restored and operates.
Grandparents received a room on the Matrosskaya Tishina street in Sokolniki in the basement with a corridor system. They had three girls, the middle one was my mother. And dad lived through Yauza, on Poteshnaya Street, where mom moved after the wedding. They got married in the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Sokolniki, to the left of the main entrance to the park itself.

I was born in the same house as my father: a corridor system, gas stoves and a washbasin at the end of the corridor. We lived in a brick house, we had water, and those who lived in wooden houses followed it to the pump on the street. But everyone lived together and caringly.
The Yauza River flowed close to our house. It was then much wider, and we children, especially boys, loved to swim in it. By the time she was dressed in granite, we had already moved.
In the early 1960s, the house began to be resettled: some of the residents left for Kuzminki, some for Khimki, and we for Nagornaya. We received a small two-room apartment from the district executive committee in a new building near the village of Zyuzino, and after that we exchanged this housing for an apartment in a nine-story building on Boitsovaya Street, which is now proudly called Rokossovsky Boulevard.
The fateful meeting with my husband took place in Izmailovo, in the Pervomaisky district, which bordered on ours, Kuibyshevsky. Dad worked at the Electrozavod as a deputy head of the shop, in their shop the technologist Alexei fell ill. Dad and his boss decided to visit him and suggested that I go with them. We came to a tall brick house. Klavdia Sergeevna, my future mother-in-law, opens for us. He appears, limping. They introduced themselves: “Alexey”, – “Olga”. We talked. And the mother-in-law says: “See the girl.” I refuse, the person is still sick. But he didn’t – he went to see him off. Then we often met at the House of Culture of Builders in Izmailovo. I remember how I somehow get off the bus in winter, he smiles, unbuttons his coat and takes out a bouquet, and then we go to the cinema or for a walk. So he won me over with his gallantry. We dated for about a year and a half and then got married.
In 1957, my father received the title of Master of Sports of the USSR in small towns.
He took me to his training at the site in Sokolniki. I remember how he takes a heavy bat, otherwise it would not have knocked down the figures, and I shout to him: “Are you going to knock down a grandmother in the window?”
And I learned to swim in the pond in Saltykovka. A kindergarten, where my mother worked, went there for the summer. Dad is on the boat, I’m behind her. When I got tired, he held out the oar, and I held on. Then, with the class, we went to the Moskva pool, where the Cathedral of Christ the Savior now stands. In winter, they teased the boys: the pool was open – we collected snow on the side and threw snowballs at the boys.

I also liked to go to the shooting range with my dad and play basketball. And I still sometimes play table tennis, despite the fact that my cousin told me all the time: “You don’t hold the racket like that, you don’t play like that.” She was a candidate master of sports in table tennis.
As a child, I was sent to figure skating. Classes were held at our Znamensky Brothers Stadium, but I didn’t like it, and I started speed skating. True, after a leg injury, my mother forbade skating. But I have always loved sports, so I continued to ride a bike, ski, figure skate and now I try to be active. Now I do Nordic walking and joint gymnastics in Active Longevity.
My mother worked as a nurse in a kindergarten all her life. It was she who advised me to go to work in a kindergarten. I listened to her. I liked the work. The kids are so interesting and funny. I wanted to teach them something. But I needed to know and be able to do a lot myself so that the children would be interested with me. I graduated from the Pedagogical College and the Pedagogical Institute of the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute, but I never stopped learning in the process of work: I took courses in the manufacture of artificial flowers, knitting, and physical education for preschoolers in order to pass on my knowledge to children and broaden their horizons.
She worked in kindergartens in the Kuibyshev region. Now it is the Eastern District. I remember many pupils, with one of them we continue to maintain relations.
The most vivid childhood and youthful memory is demonstrations. Every year we went twice – in May and in November. Father was obliged to work: he was the deputy head of the workshop at the Electrozavod. And what about us – we are young, we feel good: we go, we laugh, we sing songs. They were built right at the Electrozavod, turned left, walked through Sokolniki, then through Komsomolskaya Square, and so on foot to Red Square. They walked in large columns, all the enterprises of the district – the Electrozavod, the NPO Geofizika, the plant of electrovacuum devices. They brought banners, carried posters, flowers, took pictures. It was joyful, fun, I wanted to live.

I remember how Kalininsky Prospekt was being built.
It opened in the late 1960s, we went there with friends. Everything was new to us then: the Melodiya store with fashionable records, cafes, tall houses that we had never seen before.
In general, life was interesting. The enterprises organized so-called celebratory dinners. So we tried many national cuisines: Moldovan, Ukrainian, Uzbek. We went to the famous “Prague”. And from the “Labyrinth” – this is the second hall of the restaurant “Arbat” – we were allowed to go up to the restaurant itself, where we first saw a variety show – a real curiosity, like in a foreign movie. Previously, everything was kind, warm and joyful, there was faith in everything good.
I have been going to Sokolniki Park since childhood. A wonderful place – nature, sports grounds, attractions. What a great park, what it was then and what it is now. The stadium is now Lokomotiv, and then it was called Stalinets, it was being built before our eyes. As a child, I even participated in competitions on metal horses with pedals there.
And when there were football competitions at Lokomotiv, it was something. There were fans from all over Moscow, flags fluttered on the roofs of cars, rattles and pipes sounded. It was heard everywhere.
Preobrazhenskoye district – old, industrial. Many of its residents worked in factories. Almost my entire family worked at the same factory as my father: my husband, my mother-in-law, and my brother. My cousin still works there. Previously, the factories had a capital construction department that provided workers with housing. The electric plant built a lot of houses around, and very good ones. My husband’s family lived in this. I have been living in a factory building for over forty years.
In recent years, the area has changed a lot, and the first thing that catches your eye is the big houses. I remember these small wooden houses, now in their place is the Mossovet public center. Our hotel “Izmailovo” we call “ABVGDeyka” in our own way. Something new is being built right next to it.
In my first house, everyone knew each other. Then, when my husband and I got an apartment – the same story, all the neighbors were friends with their families. How else? Factory house. Husbands worked together, communicated, and wives, willy-nilly, had to communicate. Sometimes, I would bake pies, call the neighbors or go to them for a cake, sit down and talk. We lived together. We still keep in touch. After all, now many live nearby, in the same area. I am still friends with my neighbors. I’ll leave the house, meet a neighbor, stop, talk, be sure to find out how they are doing, if anything is needed.
I never even considered moving to another place. Of course, you will go somewhere, you will like it, but nothing more. Here the whole life has passed, many events are connected with these places. Daughter with her husband and granddaughter also live in the Preobrazhensky district. So the dynasty continues. When dad went to renew his passport, the employee took the document, looked at the registration page and was surprised: “You are a native Muscovite, and you have lived in this area all your life!” And so it turns out.
Here I am not just a native Muscovite, but a native inhabitant of the Preobrazhensky district.
Sitting in a group with a child and 4 more mistakes that parents of kindergarteners make
Everyone talks about “first time in first grade”. Almost no one talks about the first trip to kindergarten. Although for the family this event seems to be even more important than the appearance of the school in the life. Our blogger, mother of many children Lyudmila Chirkova, gave some advice to parents who are just about to take their kids to kindergarten for the first time.
I took all my children to kindergarten. In the same one. To the same teacher. But it was still a new experience every time: the children adapted in different ways. And yet, it seems to me that there are several universal mistakes that parents of preschoolers can make. I allowed them all. Therefore, I advise you to avoid them.
1. Leaving a child all day at once
Some may think that this is an ideal option.
He gets nervous once, but he quickly realizes that he has nowhere to go and gets used to it. No, that doesn’t work. Even if the child really wants to go to kindergarten. It was the same with my middle daughter: she watched her older sister, sometimes she was even allowed to enter the group and play with toys. When my daughter finally went to her group, she persuaded me to leave her at once for the whole day. At first everything was fine, but after three weeks she fell ill. Then I realized that the adaptation was invented for a reason. And even if the child stays calmly in the group for the first couple of days, this does not mean that on the third day you can pick him up at 7 pm after sleep, dinner and a walk. The “save me, I don’t want to do this anymore” mode can turn on even a couple of weeks after the start of the school year.
The middle daughter, by the way, still dreamed of a kindergarten, even after the break. But we decided to get to know him gradually.
2. Sit in a group and watch what happens
I did this with my youngest son.
For us, this was the only possible scenario – without me, the child refused to stay in the garden. He asked to take off his jacket, then his sneakers and ran away to play in a group for an hour and a half, not even looking back at me. But it was important for him to know that I was there.
It was my mistake. Kindergarten is needed to integrate a little person into society, with new rules and new adults. If mom is there all the time, nothing will work.
3. Enroll your child in all circles at once
There are many additional services in kindergartens: chess, dancing, acrobatics, swimming pool, vocals, drawing. Parents are happy: there is no need to take the child anywhere, everything is in one place! They bring money and enroll a preschooler in several circles at once. But kids don’t need all that. They have to play in the garden – at this age this is their main activity. They almost never let them do this (read about the new Federal State Educational Standard): as soon as they got a designer, they are already invited to read a book, they started building a railway, and they are seated to play chess.
I’m sure preschoolers shouldn’t have any extras. Kindergarten at this age is enough. At least in the first year, when the child adapts. Perhaps after a while, when the kindergarten becomes part of the routine, it will be possible to think about mugs. But not now.
4. Pick up on demand
How can you refuse a baby who asks to be picked up before bed? Or right after sleep? Or don’t go to kindergarten at all today, because “mom, I’m tired”? No way. Sometimes it’s really worth having a weekend, because kindergarten is a real job for a child. And not an 8-hour one, like yours. Children in the garden often stay for 12 hours and, of course, they get very tired there: try to spend the whole day in the company of 25 preschoolers who are always sharing and squealing something. Add to this stuffiness and a teacher who periodically raises his voice (yes, they all scream – even the best and most patient ones).
But picking up on demand is a bad idea. Explain to the child that you have a job, and he has a garden, living in a free schedule will not work either there or there.
By the way, first you have to explain this to yourself, otherwise you will be spinning every day, trying to figure out with whom to leave the child, call grandmothers and girlfriends, ask for time off from work, and that’s it.
It is better to agree with your child in advance when he can take an “unscheduled” day off: for example, every second Friday of the month or every third Monday. At the same time, learn the days of the week. Only promises must be kept!
5. Put an end to the kindergarten
There are no “non-kindergarten” children – there are “non-kindergarten” parents who, for one reason or another, do not want their child to go there, even if they convince everyone around of the opposite. My children had a hard time adapting to the garden, especially the two younger ones. I also wanted to drop everything and pick them up from there. But there was no such possibility.
I advise all parents to ask themselves a few questions: do you really want your child to go to kindergarten? Why? Are you sure that you are not afraid of anything and that you do not have garden-related anxieties? Perhaps the child refuses to go there, watching your behavior and mood.
