20 free toddler apps (without hidden in-app purchases!) worth downloading

Any busy parent or caregiver with small children will tell you that having a few fun apps on your phone can be a real lifesaver. For example, whipping out your phone and providing little ones with instant entertainment can help prevent badly timed meltdowns while you’re out running errands. But you may not know where to find the best free educational apps for toddlers or if toddlers should be getting screen time at all.

Christine Elgersma, a senior editor at media rating site Common Sense Media and a former teacher, says parents should view “technology as a tool, and set boundaries around this tool.”

There are lots of entertaining, free toddler apps available, but it’s important to make sure the apps kids are using have some educational benefit and are appropriate for their age.

“Free apps don’t always mean free,” says Sara Kloek, the director of Moms with Apps. “Oftentimes, those free apps will charge you later through things like in-app purchases or play advertising in lieu of charging. Those advertisements will sometimes collect data on your children.”

Making your way through the different app stores in search of free, fun and safe apps for toddlers can be challenging, so we’ve done the legwork for you. Here are 20 free toddler games and apps without in-app purchases.

Yes, we all know that, in an ideal world, toddlers wouldn’t need kid apps. They’d go straight from playing with handcrafted wooden toys to doing Montessori-inspired activities without batting an eye, their brains satiated with enrichment. But we live in the real world, and sometimes you need to make a phone call, take a shower, or eat out at a restaurant without a screaming 2-year-old demanding all of your attention. Hence, apps for toddlers.

That doesn’t mean that all the screen time has to be empty and devoid of any educational value. The best apps for toddlers do both: entertain the kiddos for a minute so you can have a break, and possibly, maybe teach them a little something about letters, colors, or numbers. We’ve rounded up a few of our favorites that do just that — many of them for free. Some feature your toddler’s favorite TV personalities, like Daniel Tiger or Elmo. Some come up with new, adorable characters of their own, so your kids feel like they’re making a new friend. Some will even get them up and moving, so their screen time isn’t also sedentary time. All of them should keep your kids’ attention long enough for you to get something — anything! — done.

PBS Kids Games

PBS Kids Games

Daniel Tiger, Arthur, and all the other PBS Kids characters come together for games so fun, kids won’t even realize they’re educational. The app is also constantly updated with new games, so they’ll never be bored.

Best Free Apps For Learning Phonics

If you want to fill your 3-year-old’s tablet with educational content, here is a list of free apps that will teach letters, numbers, and more.

Khan Academy Kids

Quality

Popularity

This educational program tops all of the “best of” app lists – and for good reason. Khan Academy is a non-profit run by experts with a mission to provide free educational content.

Their kid-centered version has personalized learning plans with activities, books, and videos that focus on literacy, math, and social-emotional skills. Your child won’t feel like they’re in a boring educational app, thanks to the five fun animal characters who follow the journey.

Khan Academy Kids has won multiple parenting awards, plus it’s free of subscriptions, in-app purchases, and ads!

Duolingo ABC

Thousands of adults have dabbled with the original Duolingo to learn another language. However, your 3-year-old is probably still trying to master one language. Duolingo ABC can help them!

The same multilingual owl we know and love will assist your child through “bite-sized” lessons and games that review letters and their pronunciations. Like its adult counterpart, it’s intended to be consumed in daily lessons and rewarded with stars.

Personally, I like how the app includes prompting the child to pronounce words. The phone or tablet’s microphone picks it up and “checks” their pronunciation.

Sesame Street

My 3-year-old loves this Sesame Street app! It’s jam-packed with games and videos starring the Sesame Street gang. At the app’s home page, your little one can decide to either watch a video, like Hurray-Hurrah for Broccoli with Miss Abby Cadabby herself, or watch Ernie annoy his roommate Bert. If they’re so inclined, they can dive into an educational game instead.

What your toddler will learn is dependent on the game itself, because the lessons are varied. Elmo’s Brain Games, for example, gets Elmo and your child ready for preschool with games focusing on memory and counting.

In this house, we appreciated the game Potty Plan with Elmo and Abby. It certainly came in handy during potty training!

ABC Alphabet Phonics

When it comes to early phonics, you probably can’t have enough apps on the subject. This phonics app is one that boasts an interface so easy “even a 9-month-old baby” could use it.

Is the easy interface what makes this app so awesome? It’s part of it but you have got to check out the voice feature. Mom or dad can record their own voice and the app will use it! Yes, this app will teach your 3-year-old their ABCs using your voice!

Furthermore, dynamic gameplay adjusts the difficulty and speed as your child goes. So many toddler apps are slow-paced. Not this one. It keeps pace with your child.

ABC Kids Tracing & Phonics

How about some basics of handwriting? Your 3-year-old is nearing preschool and that will begin their handwriting journey.

In the ABC Kids Tracing & Phonics app, children are shown individual letters and are instructed to trace them with their fingers. As they trace, the app also identifies the letter and introduces its phonetic sound. The app covers both uppercase and lowercase letters.

I love this app because my son is always so happy after he traces a letter. “I did it!” he tells me every time. Trust me, it’s awesome. Plus, this app is the full version and has absolutely no ads!

Best Free Apps for Learning STEM

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

Math Kids

Quality

Popularity

Math Kids is an app is aimed at preschoolers ready to learn the basics of math! It starts out simple with counting and comparing, like which group of objects has more. It then progresses to simple addition and subtraction.

If you’re worried this mathematical work will be too difficult for your child, don’t be. I was worried too, but most of the addition and subtraction questions are multiple-choice and, of course, there’s no penalty for a wrong answer. Apps like this one are intended merely to expose children to basic math. Perfection is not necessary.

Park Math by Duck Duck Moose

Get used to seeing the name Duck Duck Moose on this list. This app company was acquired by Khan Academy and produces high-quality apps for youngsters that are free of all in-app purchases.

Park Math is a sweet little game based in a park and hosted by animals. This app focuses on very early mathematical concepts, perfect for a 3-year-old who might not even able to pronounce “mathematical” correctly yet. It especially emphasizes common core math concepts.

In this park, your little one will engage in activities like sorting a group of dogs from smallest to largest, counting food items to feed a hippo, and learn basic addition and subtraction with ducks and apple trees.

Ocean by Marco Polo Learning Inc.

Every kid’s tablet should have an app that encourages learning about nature and all its majesty. This Ocean app brings the deep blue sea right to your child’s screen. This app is award-winning as well.

In this self-directed science app, children explore the ocean with puzzle games that shoot out facts about sea creatures, like “humpback whales use songs to talk,” or “an octopus can open a jar!”

Beyond sea creatures, your child can build a coral reef, a ship, and even a submarine. As a result, don’t be surprised when your child starts spouting off marine facts.

Best Free Apps for Creating

If you have a budding artist on your hands, download some apps that allow them to foster their creativity!

Finger Paint Coloring Book

Quality

Popularity

Your toddler can choose from coloring book templates or blank paper for freestyle coloring with the Finger Paint Coloring Book app.

What’s fun about this creative app is that you can choose from “printed” colors in addition to standard solid colors. For example, your 3-year-old can choose to color a doll’s shirt with the plaid marker. Want to save their artwork? There are 8 spots available to save your toddler’s painting to view later.

Toonia Colorbooks

This coloring app includes a whopping 160 coloring pages. There are 20 different categories and over 100 colors of virtual crayons. The app even has a multi-touch feature, so you or a friend can color with your child.

This app does include in-app purchases. To unlock an additional five coloring books, it will cost a few bucks. However, these extra books are purely that – extra. Your child will be more than satisfied with the included books.

Scribaloo Paint by Fionnuala Hanahoe

This a no-frills finger painting app. The interface couldn’t be simpler: on the edges, there are the paint swatches and tools. From there, your child just freeform paints using their fingers.

As they draw, they create a beautiful watercolor-like piece of work. If you see the result and love it (of course you will!), you can take a picture of their masterpiece and save it to your phone. From there, whether you make it your phone wallpaper is up to you.

Kids Puzzles Game for Toddlers

This puzzle game was designed to resemble wooden board puzzles. Like those puzzles, this game’s puzzles help develop your child’s memory, critical thinking, and fine motor skills.

The free version of this app includes 15 animal puzzles. You can upgrade with an in-app purchase to 30 animal puzzles.

Princess Fairy Tale Maker by Duck Duck Moose

Is your child a storyteller? Or maybe you have to tell them seven different fairy tales at bedtime? If so, encourage them to create their own!

In this app, you’ll get 32 animated backgrounds and over 190 animated stickers. These stickers include the favorites: princesses, mermaids, and fairies. They’re more than mythical; they’re also empowering. Check out the princess who visits the moon!

The best part? Your child can record their own voice and have their characters speak!

Superhero Comic Book Maker by Duck Duck Moose

If you have a child who isn’t into the fairy tale scene, maybe comic book characters are more their speed. Like the Princess Fairy Tale Maker, this is a drag-and-drop sticker game and that is powered by imagination.

Your 3-year-old’s comic book will be populated with such characters as Captain Banana Man, Big Foot, and some friendly aliens. Listen, it sounds wacky and it is, but your kid will think it’s hysterical.

Just like the previous princess game, your child can also lend their voice to this comic book game!

Best Free Apps for Videos

Sometimes, we all just want to watch a show or movie. These apps feature kid-friendly media.

PBS KIDS Video

Quality

Popularity

Repeat after me: Daniel Tiger. Okay, that’s not all that’s on this app, of course. The PBS KIDS Video app gives you free access to PBS shows without any sort of subscription. You can even watch live on your area’s local PBS station.

With that all said and done, I use this app for Daniel Tiger. The songs may get stuck in your head, but they are useful. We often sing “Grownups come back!” when mommy or daddy has to leave.

This app also features other hit PBS shows, like Molly of Denali. This show follows a 10-year-old girl living her life in Alaska. Likewise, it also has Clifford, Arthur, Sesame Street, and Esme and Roy.

DisneyNow

Quality

Popularity

DisneyNow is an app that features content from Disney Channel, Disney Junior, and Disney XD. Your 3-year-old will be pumped to watch episodes of favorites like Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Doc McStuffins, and PJ Masks.

The app itself is free to download but to access the content, you will need a cable subscription that includes the Disney channels.

Nick Jr.

Quality

Popularity

Like Disney Now, the Nick Jr. app works with your cable subscription to unlock some content. With a cable subscription, your 3-year-old can watch full episodes of Nick Jr. shows like Paw Patrol, Baby Shark, Blue’s Clues and You, and more.

Does that mean this app is useless without a cable subscription? Nope! A lot of the app’s content is available without one. For instance, as I type, I can access some full episodes, video clips, and all the games. For content requiring your cable subscription, you’ll notice a lock icon in the corner.

What my little one and I enjoy about the Nick Jr. app is how it mixes together favorite characters. Many games aren’t purely centered on one show. Finding Your Feelings is a cute game about emotions and it brings together characters from Paw Patrol, Blaze, Bubble Guppies, and Team UmiZoomi.

YouTube Kids

Popularity

YouTube Kids is a child-friendly version of YouTube. Content is curated for children from preschool age to 12 years old. When you download the app, you’ll be prompted to create a free account. This is so the app can suggest content geared towards your child’s age.

YouTube Kids is where your child can watch all Blippi videos (that’s good or bad, depending on your viewpoint). You can also throw a dance party with preschool music channels, like Super Simple Songs, Cocomelon, and Little Baby Bum. If you haven’t heard of any of these channels, don’t worry – you’re about to!

Best Free Apps for Moving and Mindfulness

Get your little one’s body moving and their mind relaxed with these wellness apps.

Breathe, Think, Do by Sesame Street

Quality

Popularity

This mindfulness app is intended for children aged 2-5. It was actually created as part of Sesame Street’s Little Children, Big Challenges. According to the program’s mission, it was created to help children “navigate challenges and build lifelong skills for resilience.”

Specifically, this app focuses on coping with frustration and anger. Different activities encourage children to stop and breathe and think. Kids can help a Sesame monster take deep breaths and come up with constructive solutions to his problem.

For parents, there is also a section with resources to assist you in helping your child as well through life’s challenges.

GoNoodle

GoNoodle may be an app full of videos, but these videos are made to get kids moving! The app creators realized kids are less active now than ever, so they decided to make movement more fun.

GoNoodle is actually used in many public school systems. In fact, in these schools, students saw a 13% improvement in healthy weight and a 37% decrease in classroom disciplinary events thanks to this app!

Periodically, videos will start with ads. They’re about 10 seconds long and kid-appropriate content, but if advertisements are something you’re uncomfortable with, keep this in mind.

Super Stretch Yoga

This fun interactive app introduces children to yoga! It’s never too early to start yoga. This ancient practice can help children cope with anxiety and boost their body awareness and self-esteem.

It keeps it interesting with cartoon demonstrations of different yoga poses. Unsurprisingly, a downward dog is illustrated with a dog. Other animal instructors include a monkey, an elephant, and an eagle.

After the animal demonstration, there are videos of children performing the poses so your child knows what to copy. The poses are beginner-level, easy-to-do, and your kid will have fun doing them!

Best Free Apps for Games

These apps don’t promise to review phonics with your child, but they will certainly entertain (and kill some time)!

Trucks by Duck Duck Moose

Quality

Popularity

I wasn’t going to let this section end without a Duck Duck Moose offering! However, unlike the other DDM apps, Trucksdoesn’t set its sight on educating – it’s just pure four-wheeled fun.

In this game, your kid will interact with vehicles of all types, including fire trucks, police cars, and even ice cream trucks. Different areas of the app have varied activities, such as soaping and rinsing up a car in the car wash, cleaning the streets with a trash truck, or bulldozing at a construction site.

Learn and Play by Fisher-Price

Fisher-Price is a brand that knows what’s it doing when it comes to quality children’s products. Its Learn and Play app, a collaboration with the learning program Homer, is no different.

The app features Fisher-Price characters kids know and love from toys, like Puppy, Sis, and Little People characters. One activity even lets your little one call these characters and chat with them!

Other activities are Hidden Animals, Art Studio, Play with Letters, Little People stickers, and Sing-Along songs. The app also has a Parent section with tips and tricks for you from experts.

Dr. Panda

My 3-year-old son is a big fan of the Dr. Panda games. The eponymous panda holds numerous professions beyond MD, all of which earn their own app.

Most of these games cost a few dollars or include in-app purchases. However, your child can run his restaurant for free.

Once you seat the patrons, they place their order. The player then puts together their meals before serving them. Your child will also have to clean up after the customers so there’s a hidden lesson!

Barbie Magical Fashion

Quality

Popularity

Got a Barbie fan in your house? They’ll probably get a kick out of this fashionista app. Barbie first needs her hair and makeup done. After that, you’ll need to pick her jewelry before you can choose her beautiful gown.

Still, I will say the most magical part of this app is just how quickly it all goes down. Where can I get Barbie’s curling iron that gives instant wave and volume with a quick tap?

Heads up – this app does include some in-app purchases. The game can be played for free, but things like additional outfits can be purchased during play. These purchases can be tempting to little ones, like a mermaid pack, so keep a close eye.

Toca Kitchen Monsters

Toca Boca is a popular app creator amongst kids, thanks to its whimsical animation. Most of the games cost a dollar or two, but the Kitchen Monsters can be on your child’s tablet for free.

In this game, so-called kitchen monsters are hungry, and it is up to your son or daughter to feed them. Don’t worry – these monsters may look absurd, but they’re perfectly friendly.

The game encourages kids to get creative and “play” with their food. The app suggests boiling a salad or offers up what I can only imagine is a monster blueberry!

Musical Me! by Duck Duck Moose

This game could fit in both the learn and play categories, but it’s so much fun, it wins a place here. Musical Me introduces your child to the tenets of music, including pitch and rhythm.

Mozzarella the Mouse (I know, adorable) will teach the basic building blocks of music and offer free play with different instruments. There’s even an activity that works on how to read music for aspiring musicians.

This app features 14 familiar children’s songs like Mary Had a Little Lamb and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, so your little one will recognize their favorite tunes.

FAQs – Free Apps for 3-Year-Olds

What are the guidelines on screen time for 3-year-olds?

Screen time guidelines can be a sensitive subject for some. Officially, the W.H.O. recommends children under 5 receive limited to no screen time. The CDC recommends only an hour a day.

However, in today’s world, electronics are almost as plentiful as air. Some days, that hour turns into two or three. I understand this completely; some days I just need some uninterrupted time to put dinner together or clean the house.

When it comes to screen time, it’s most important to focus on the quality of what your child is watching or playing. For instance, a game that teaches phonics has more value than a video your child simply watches and doesn’t interact with.

Of course, always supervise your child’s screen time. Kids today are great with tablets and phones and can buy in-game purchases with the click of a finger before you notice!

What’s important to look for in apps for 3-year-olds?

For a young child, you really want to focus on apps with an educational aspect. You want any screen time they have to be of quality.

At 3 years old, kids are learning the foundations that will prepare them for school. These are things like the ABCs, numbers, shapes, and even sight words.

That said, not every minute or screen time has to be a phonics exercise. Now and then, sometimes it’s best to just let a game be a game. For pure entertainment, pick simple games that won’t be frustrating for your 3-year-old. Look into games that include their favorite characters, like Paw Patrol, Daniel Tiger, or PJ Masks (licensed characters like that do tend to come only in paid apps, however).

Is it ever worth paying for apps for 3-year-olds?

Yes. Listen, I know toddlers have attention spans that make goldfish seem attentive. If your kid is going to be flipping through different apps, you definitely don’t want to shell out a bunch of money on dozens of apps.

That being said, there are a few apps out there worth the money. Subscription services like ABC Mouse, Homer, and Noggin are praised for their content for good reason.

Still, after testing said apps, you may want to save your money for another year or two. Those apps are mostly geared towards kids already in school and maybe too advanced for a 3-year-old.

For paid apps for 3-year-olds, Pinkfong, Sesame Street, and Sago Mini have some good options.

Should I buy a tablet for my 3-year-old?

This is an entirely personal decision. All the apps on this list can be downloaded on a tablet or just on your phone. Some parents prefer to have control of the device, like when it is their own phone.

Personally, I was always terrified of handing over my phone to my son because he has a tendency to drop everything. Because of this, I opted for a tablet with a kid-proof case.

Most importantly, if you do decide to buy your 3-year-old his or her own tablet, look for a tablet designed with children in mind. Tablets like these have strong parental controls and tend to be more robust physically.

Conclusion

As parents, we all know that we can’t park our 3-year-olds in front of screens all day. On the other hand, we all know that an hour or two here and there certainly can’t hurt, and sometimes, it can be the only way to get some laundry folded unassisted.

Thankfully, we have a veritable smorgasbord of applications we can download, free of charge, to entertain our 3-year-olds. Sure, there are so many paid apps available out there, so why not pay for them? Like toys and clothes, kids outgrow games rather quickly. Save some dollars and download some free apps!

While it should be limited, screen time can be useful. When you need a small distraction for your child, you can try some free apps for 3-year-olds. Some apps are made to teach while others are purely made for entertainment.

To sum up, all types of apps have a time and place. Hopefully, after this guide, you have an idea of what apps best suit you and your family. Enjoy!

If you’re looking for some of the best apps for toddlers in 2022 then you’ll love this collection. These apps have been tested by myself (teacher and mother) and approved by my toddlers. They are apps that I would happily let my own toddlers play (in small, supervised sessions of course) and that I highly recommend.

This post has been updated to include the best apps for toddlers 2021.

Are you looking for the best apps for toddlers? We have found some of the best toddler apps  – all tested on my very own toddlers! I’m also an early years teacher so these apps get the educational tick of approval as well.

I don’t advocate letting your toddler spend a lot of time playing apps on tablets and phones, but as an educator and parent, I can definitely see the value in supervised play with some of the fantastic educational apps that are available. The biggest problem is finding the best apps for toddlers among the thousands, if not millions of toddler apps out there.

After being overwhelmed with the options available (a large percentage of which were low quality, filled with ads or had very little educational value), I recently asked for YOUR favorite toddler apps in our Facebook group and have included many of those in this list.

There were several apps that were recommended many times, along with some great new suggestions. After having a closer look at your recommendations I have compiled a list of Apps your toddler will love!

You will notice that the list contains a mix of free and paid apps. While I could have focused on only the free apps, I feel that there are some excellent toddler apps that are worth paying a few dollars for (especially if it means no ads and excellent content).

If you are looking for only free apps I have put together a list of the best FREE ipad apps for toddlers.  Please be wary of the free toddler apps as I’ve found that the developers of many of them (not the ones I’ve listed) are very sneaky with their ad placement and it’s really easy for your toddler to download all kinds of things. Sometimes it’s worth the dollar or two to avoid that.

What tablet is best for a toddler?

If you’re worried about your toddler dropping or breaking your own phone or tablet (I’ve had that happen to me!) then it can be worthwhile buying them their own one. While this seems a bit extravagant I’ve found that it’s much better than letting them drop your $600 tablet. The tablets for the kids don’t need to be anywhere near as powerful as your own one either as you’re not running many programs on it.

My recommendation for a tablet for your toddler is the Amazon Fire HD Kids Edition tablet which you can get HERE.

Some of the main reasons that I recommend this tablet for toddlers is:

    • It comes with a kid proof case (and in a variety of colors)
    • They give you a 2 year guarantee – if your kids break it, Amazon will replace it
    • It comes with a free year of Amazon Kids + (kid friendly apps and ebooks). You can find out more about Amazon Free Time Unlimited and get a free trial HERE.

You might also want to look into headphones as well. I really like the volume limiting ones (for obvious reasons!).  I really like these ones.

My son goes to kindergarten, but now he is in self-isolation at home.

Maria Kolenkova

found something to do with the child

Author profile

I continue to work remotely and try to keep my child busy in order to earn easy money.

During the first week of self-isolation, I wanted to teach him how to play chess and study English in traditional “tutorials”. But too formalized classes turned out to be boring. After them, my five-year-old son said: “Mom, please, let’s not play anymore.

Therefore, I have collected games that develop logic, thinking, memory, teach counting and writing, but at the same time are interesting for the child.

Cut The Rope

Green monstrik Nyami from the same name cartoon character loves candy. The whole game is built on this: you need to feed the hero. But to do this is not so easy. The child needs to cut the ropes that the candy is tied to and watch how gravity works, in which direction the sweet will fly off or swing. Complicating the passage of the level are bubbles that can pick up the candy and take it upstairs – then you have to start over.

The logic and laws of physics in the game are not presented boringly and formally, but are explained in practice. The creators of the game marked it 0+, and even kindergarteners can really handle the very first levels. But then it can be difficult for younger students.

Top 10 free apps for kids that can partly replace school

Parents often have the question: “Does a tablet harm my child?”. By itself, moderate use of phones and tablets does not pose a danger to anyone. The main thing here, as in any other business, is to know when to stop. But it is important to remember that no gadget can replace a child’s live interaction with parents, other people and the outside world.

Studies show that 25% of children under 16 are permanently connected to the Internet, and half of them feel addicted to a smartphone. So let’s take advantage of this. Every day, useful educational applications appear on the Internet that help students gain knowledge outside the classroom.

An application that will help children improve their grammar skills. Ideal for elementary school children. In the application, you can choose the level of difficulty and suitable topics, take tests, earn points and share achievements with friends. For greater authenticity, everything here is designed in the form of a workbook, and the buttons are visualized in capital letters. Any mistake that the child made in the test can be sorted out in the paragraph “Work on mistakes”.

In the application, you can select the competition mode (game for two), so that parents can test their strength and pass the quiz on an equal footing with their children.

Duolingo

This language learning app is rightfully considered one of the best of its kind. It is used by millions of people around the world – both children and adults. The learning system is based on cards. Difficulty levels change according to your progress – every week there are competitions in subgroups with real people, where you can earn extra points. You can not play endlessly – there is a limit of “hearts”, as in computer shooters, which end if you make a lot of mistakes (but then everything is restored!). There is a paid version where the supply of “hearts” is not limited.

Many experts have tested the effectiveness of the developer approach, and studies have found that 34 hours on Duolingo provides as much reading and writing skills as an initial semester course in US institutions of higher education.

Children will be able to learn a new language in a playful way (by the way, the design looks very organic for adults too). 31 language courses are available. In the application, everything is done in order to really interest users in learning languages. You can learn in Duolingo not only on all available platforms of tablets and phones, but also through a computer browser.

The intellectual battle takes place with a real opponent, not with a computer. You can invite classmates to the game and fight with them.

The developers based the application on questions taken from the school curriculum – from history to physics, from chemistry to geography.

Brainly (“Knowledge”)

The format of the application is similar to the concept of social networks, only more narrowly focused, and unlike social networks, everything is to the point. Through the application, students can communicate, exchange information with each other, discuss lessons and homework. Do you know any subject “excellent”? Through Brainly, you can help those who are doing worse. Do you feel that there are difficulties with some lesson? Tell others about it and they will help you.

The format of the application allows you not only to study in a comfortable environment, but also teaches you to be a responsive, understanding person who can help those who need it.

“Summaries”

Nowadays, not all children like reading. More precisely, few of the students like it. There are many reasons for such dislike (from specific teachers to the school curriculum), but this can be fought. Not by sharp, strict methods, but gradually. For example, arm yourself with the “Summary” application, in which several dozens of abridged books from the high school curriculum are stored offline. To fall in love with something, you need to try several options. It is likely that your child has not found the very book that will open the world of literature to him.

Long and tedious reading of an uninteresting book from the school curriculum can completely kill interest in books, but thanks to the application, the situation can be corrected. After briefly reading several works, the child will find one that he wants to read in full. In addition, he will be familiar with other works, which guarantees him an acceptable grade in literature lessons.

Peak

An application that is one level higher than the rest, because it is not Russified. But this is even good, since the child kills two birds with one stone at once – it improves the level of English and trains the brain. Peak is a collection of mini-games that will develop the player’s mental abilities in a rather fun and interactive way.

First you need to pass a test that will determine the level of the user and create an individual training program. Then choose the priority areas that you want to improve: memory, attention, concentration, memorization of new words, vocabulary development, and so on. Collect points, get achievements, rejoice in progress. Exercises are interesting, and most importantly – effective.

10 best mobile games for kids development

My Sunday morning started with a letter from the editor of Kaspersky Daily.

“Denis, you once wrote for our blog about games for the development of children. This post is still in the top of the most popular content. Now the topic has become even more relevant – millions of families are trying to peacefully coexist in self-isolation. Do you want to update the post?

One of the features of our family’s self-isolation* is the blurring of boundaries between the days of the week. We do not have working days and days off – instead of them, something new has arisen, a hybrid. We strictly carry out our kindergarten-school-work tasks, but at the same time, a lot of time was freed up, which was previously spent on moving around in space. In general, despite the fact that today is Sunday, now I will write this post – and only then I will switch to classes that are more characteristic of weekends.

More than four years have passed since the old post was written. During this time, a lot of things have happened: experts have invented new teaching methods, developers have released new applications. My children have grown up and new ones have appeared 🙂

What hasn’t changed is my attitude towards computer games. Everything electronic is firmly registered in people’s lives, and to deny, and even more so to counteract the new realities, is tantamount to a strategic defeat in the future of our children. It is pointless to fight – you need to lead and manage. This paragraph from my previous post about mobile games has definitely not lost its relevance:

It is not in our power to change the fact that synergy “human-computer” is growing, but it is in our power to show children why computers exist. Show who serves whom – who is the master and who is the servant. Do not let computers enslave you, but take the best from them to improve the quality of life, while not losing your soul and the ability to lively communicate.

Forbidden fruit is sweet. Uncontrolled consumption of the forbidden fruit is fraught with deviations, antisocial behavior and degradation. You can avoid these consequences by depriving the fetus of the status of the forbidden. Eat it together! Keeping the dose, consciously choosing the genre and teaching children about the basics of relationships with smart devices (including, of course, the rules of cybersecurity). The current period of self-isolation is the time to do it.

I bring to your attention ten (in fact, even much more) mobile games and really interesting educational applications that my children and I are happy to dive into and gain intelligence.

1. What’s inside?

Download on Google Play Download on the App Store

How does it all work and why does it work the way it does? These and another million and thirty-six thousand other natural science questions swarm in the minds of all children, regularly splashing out on their parents – and they are now, as you know, at home work , and it is not always convenient for them to be distracted.

But – hooray! – in mobile stores there is something to satisfy this hunger! For example, Learny Land’s series of entertainment and educational applications:

  • How do things work? (Android, iOS)
  • What is there in space? (Android, iOS)
  • May the forces be with you (iOS)
  • How did dinosaurs live? (Android, iOS)
  • How does my body work? (Android, iOS)

2. Bredusyatina

Download on Google Play Download on the App Store

Cheer up the gray matter of the brain is useful not only for children, but also for adults. I confess: Bredus (as well as their prequel “Rebuses” and the English version of REBUS) is my favorite thing to do in air travel. Nothing shortens travel time like (quoting the game’s blurb) “a game that makes your brain curl and tickle your skull from the inside. Each solved puzzle will make a pleasant click in the brain.

Some puzzles can be spent days and weeks in thought. Others pop like nuts one after the other. But together they perfectly develop non-standard thinking and combinatorics. And for the smallest, the developer has AZZL – however, only for iOS.

  • BREDUS (Android, iOS)
  • REBUSES+ (Android, iOS)
  • AZZL (iOS)

3. Shake the old days!

Download on Google Play Download on App Store

Arcades… And especially ancient arcades. Oh, how many nostalgic memories such “warm tube” titles, such as Digger, Lode Runner, Tetris and PAC-MAN, evoke!

The games that have changed the fourth decade are still more alive than all living ones, because the ingenious game dynamics will forever remain brilliant, all ages are submissive to it. And thanks to those kind people who ported the “good old” to the “new-smart”.

  • Digger (Android, iOS)
  • Lode Runner (Android, iOS)
  • Tetris (Android, iOS)
  • PAC-MAN (Android, iOS)

4. Mystery Finder

Download on Google Play Download on the App Store

CHUCHEL. First, it’s very beautiful. The games of the Czech studio Amanita Design are distinguished by amazing elaboration of the smallest details, wonderful, unexpectedly embossed characters and hypnotic magical worlds.

Second, in the spirit of the classic quests of the 80s and 90s, this game elegantly makes children’s balls go behind the rollers and break the usual stereotypes of problem solving. Thirdly, if you didn’t have enough CHUCHEL and want more, then continue playing other games from the same studio – Samorost 3, Machinarium, Botanicula and Pilgrims (for the little ones).

  • CHUCHEL (Android, iOS)
  • Samorost 3 (Android, iOS)
  • Machinarium (Android, iOS)
  • Botanicula (Android, iOS)
  • Pilgrims (iOS)

5. It’s hard to be a god

Download on Google Play Download on the App Store

That’s right! In the Pavilion game, the protagonist is encouraged to act with the help of various otherworldly signs. Because of this, the developers cleverly positioned the application as a “fourth-person puzzle adventure”. This alone arouses curiosity and fuels the willingness to pay four bucks! To be honest, we have no regrets!

In 2019, we were promised to release the second part of Pavilion, but alas, it is still not and is not expected. It’s a pity!

  • Pavilion (Android, iOS)

6. Visiting Cheburashka

Download on Google Play Download on the App Store

I continue the theme of beautiful adventure quests – Lumino City.

This game could be put in the “and others” list under Pavilion, but I can’t, it’s just impossible! The game deserves all the attention for its stunning aesthetics and scenery. The developers erected a miraculous monument to themselves in the style of puppet cartoons of the 70s and 80s. Perhaps, to create an appetite, you can first watch this amusing video about the creation of the game Making of Lumino City. Awesome!

And if you liked it, the App Store also has a prequel – Lume. By the way, its developers are now distributing for free.

  • Lumino City (Android, iOS)
  • The Making of Lumino City (iOS)
  • Lume (iOS)

7. Beyond everything

Download on the App Store

And here is a museum exhibit in the good sense of the word – INSIDE. This is a game from the creators of the old hit LIMBO about the adventures of a little boy in the other world. It sounds creepy, but it looks so that you can’t take your eyes off. That’s why it’s a “museum exhibit”. At INSIDE, parents can just look and admire, and children can play.

  • INSIDE (iOS)
  • LIMBO (Android, iOS)

8. Creative Brain Explosion

Download on Google Play Download on the App Store

If your kids have already completed CHUCHEL and Lumino City, the Bredus are clicking for dessert and are crazy about the worlds of Pavilion and INSIDE, then you need to urgently install gorogoa. This is an original adventure puzzle game with very unusual game dynamics.

Well, at least I haven’t seen anything like this before, and for the first five minutes I was just “stupid”, not understanding what was going on. But as soon as it becomes clear how and what to strive for, then . .. you will dream of this game 🙂

  • Gorogoa (Android, iOS)

9. Smart words

Download on Google Play Download on the App Store

Parallelepiped, bisector, centroid. Pythagorean theorem, right-angled trapezoids, perpendicular bisectors. Isosceles triangles, central symmetry, medians.

A rare child does not want to shine in front of peers with deep knowledge of the foundations of Euclidean geometry. Moreover, you can get to know them in an accessible and entertaining manner in the Pythagorea application. Who knows, perhaps this will open a future great architect or mathematician in a small person?

  • Pythagoria (Android, iOS)
  • Euclidea (Android, iOS)

10.

Minecraft!

Download on Google Play Download on the App Store

Because Minecraft! It was with this game and with the same rationale that I finished my previous top 10 mobile games. And if there are traditions, then there is order. Therefore, Minecraft Earth.

  • Minecraft Earth (Android, iOS)
  • Minecraft (Android, iOS)

I wish you productive self-isolation! Take care of yourself and others – and use this chance to look at the world in a new way!

(*) A note for the readers of this post from the future. In March 2020, when I wrote this post, many countries introduced strict measures against the spread of the coronavirus infection. One of these measures is “self-isolation”, that is, minimizing contact with other people and switching to work from home.

10 apps for preschoolers that are not embarrassing to have on your phone

Today we have a unique opportunity (our parents definitely didn’t have it!) not only to entertain, but also to educate a child with the help of applications. Of course, they will not replace live communication or going to the zoo, but sometimes you can give yourself a little rest. We have selected cool apps for those kids who want to learn how to cook, learn English and understand anatomy.

1. Khan Academy Kids, 4+

This app is in English from the famous Khan Academy. Five fun characters teach kids of all ages math, language and literacy through games, stories and videos. Users of the app have access to the Khan Academy Library, which is full of educational books, videos, and coloring pages. It looks like the app develops exactly this ability. It is ideal for children with creative inclinations. You can find out what your child likes more – music or drawing – and then write it down in the appropriate section. The main thing is not to get stuck in the application yourself.

App for iOS

5. Sago Mini Pet Cafe, 4+

App for little chefs and cooks. Children will be able to cook various dishes, and at the same time they will learn to recognize shapes, numbers and colors. You will prepare a cocktail, sort out cookies, and feed hungry pets. Despite the age marking 4+, the application is ideal for children from two years old.

iOS application

6. Lingokids, 4+

We have already written about how to learn English with the help of cartoons, and here is another way. This is one of the best English learning apps for kids. Through games and tasks, children expand their vocabulary and learn the rules. It is very convenient that the application has many different formats: audio books, songs, mini-games. It adapts individually to the child: you can choose the gender, age and level of training.

7.

My Zoo Animals, 4+

This application has three colorful interactive maps with animals in the zoo, in the forest and on the farm. Users can simply tap the screen with their finger to activate the animation. Thus, the child will be able to learn what sounds which animal makes, how they look in general.

iOS app

8. YouTube for kids, 4+

We all love YouTube, and kids are no exception. But it takes a lot of effort and time to select content for them by age on regular YouTube. In this application, the content was collected for you – there are special packages for different ages, and you just have to approve them. Children will be able to watch their favorite videos, listen to music, learn how to make slime and explore the world around them.

Beautiful animated puzzles for the little ones. The game is continuous – you can start and finish collecting anywhere, and move in any direction.
