Creator of the Fisherman. Investigation continued The Bell
This week we released an investigation into how Rybar, the largest anonymous pro-military telegram channel with a million audience, works. In the article, we named the name of one of its authors – Denis Shchukin. The second – the person who created the channel and called himself its owner and “chief administrator” – we could not find at first. But now we know who it is.
After the release of the first The Bell investigation, we were contacted by a reader who was personally acquainted with the second Rybar administrator. At the time of the acquaintance, the channel already existed, and the interlocutor of The Bell knew his counterpart as its administrator. The reader did not remember the name of the interlocutor, but shared his phone number. This helped us to accurately establish the identity of the creator of Rybar.
This person is Mikhail Zvinchuk, a 31-year-old military Arabic interpreter, former press officer of the Ministry of Defense. His biography in all details coincides with the few facts that “Rybar” himself reported about his creator and revealed in the channel chat by a user under the nickname “RD”, who called himself his owner.
- “A little over 30, left the ranks of the Armed Forces six months before being awarded major epaulettes, in the past a graduate of the alma mater of all military translators,” Rybar described on July 25, 2022, the biography of the “chief administrator” of the project and wrote that It was his birthday last week. Zvinchuk is 31 years old, he graduated from the Military University of the Ministry of Defense (formerly the Military Institute of Foreign Languages), and his birthday, which was indicated in the VKontakte account, is 19July.
- User “RD” (we talked about him in detail in the first series) wrote that he was from Vladivostok. Zvinchuk was born there and studied at the school. The SPARK-Interfax database contains Zvinchuk’s individual entrepreneur, in the registration data of which his TIN is indicated – judging by the first digits, he was received in Vladivostok.
- “RD” wrote in the “Rybarnaya No. 1” chat about his business trips to Iraq and Syria. According to a reader of The Bell, in 2015-2017, while working in the press service of the Ministry of Defense, Zvinchuk organized visits to Syria by Russian journalists.
- Zvinchuk’s accounts on several social networks (VKontakte, LiveJournal, Liveinternet.ru) and on numerous fantasy forums he writes and administers are called by the same nickname – “Ergont”. The Bell found an account with the same username in Telegram – and this account was a member of the Rybarnaya No. 1 chat.
The Bell contacted Zvinchuk via this telegram account. Initially, the interlocutor stated that he was “confused with someone.” But after the message about the presence of his account in the Rybar chat and a link to his LiveJournal, Zvinchuk wrote: “God! Better deanon than reading what he wrote 20 years ago.”
Nevertheless, in a further conversation with The Bell correspondent, Zvinchuk neither confirmed nor denied that he was the creator or author of Rybar, and he did not even read the last message with a direct question about whether this was so.
Mikhail Zvinchuk was born in Vladivostok in 1991. Judging by the entries in social networks, he served in the army, then studied in Moscow at the Military University of the Ministry of Defense as an Arabic translator. Among the topics of Zvinchuk’s term papers was, for example, the following: “Peculiarities of the combat use of the NATO Allied Armed Forces during Operation Joint Defender in Libya,” he wrote in his LiveJournal.
Zvinchuk described his period of life until 2012 in detail in the same social network. For example, in 2011 (he was 20 years old), he wrote: “I was told here that I have low-brow Western thinking based on the fact that I serve in the army, I am dissatisfied with the fact that I, a military man, have a low salary and bad conditions, that I want a corny better life and when I graduate, if I have the opportunity to better provide for my relatives, I will exchange my contract service for a well-paid job in a civilian / abroad. Then he noted that “the army is already giving the seventh year.”
After graduating from the university, Zvinchuk worked in the Department of Information and Mass Communications of the Russian Ministry of Defense – at least until August 2017: then his contacts were indicated in the announcement of the search for a specialist with knowledge of French and Spanish “in one of the structural divisions of the Defense Ministry.” Three years later, another Arabist, an employee of the Sputnik news agency (part of the RIA Novosti structure), told how, in the same 2017, Zvinchuk consulted with him on questions about the Arabic version of the Ministry of Defense website, but by that time he was already about to quit.
The department where Zvinchuk worked has been headed by Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov since 2017. Since 2011, he has served as head of the press service and information department of the Ministry of Defense and gained fame first when covering the Russian military operation in Syria after 2015, and in recent months thanks to daily briefings on the course of the war in Ukraine. Zvinchuk himself told the reader of The Bell that he left the Ministry of Defense because of the difficult and thankless working conditions, which, moreover, were not well paid.
The Bell’s interlocutor recalls that Zvinchuk told him that he ran the channel on his own, and then the channel was an objective supplier of information about the Middle East. But after some time, Zvinchuk began to mention that he was contacted by representatives of RIA FAN (a publication that is part of Yevgeny Prigozhin’s Patriot media holding. – The Bell). It was after this that the “tonality of information” in “Rybar” began to change, says the source of The Bell. In 2020–2021, Rybar had a permanent section on the RIA FAN website. An employee of Patriot, in a conversation with The Bell, claimed that Prigozhin provided funding to the channel, but in 2021 or 2022 the cooperation ceased.
In 2018, the Ukrainian base “Peacemaker” (created in 2014 at that time by Anton Gerashchenko, a freelance adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and positioned as a register of “Kremlin agents”), added Zvinchuk to their lists. There, he is presented as “an accomplice in information and propaganda campaigns and manipulations by the Russian Defense Ministry to justify Russian aggression against Ukraine, massacres of Syrian civilians.” The reason for including Zvinchuk in the database was his work in the press service of the Russian Defense Ministry.
It is not known how Zvinchuk met the second Rybar administrator, Denis Shchukin. But at least before they were united by an interest in fantasy literature and computer games. Like Shchukin, Zvinchuk, judging by his social networks and websites, was fond of fantasy at least in his youth. They are both members of the Imaginaria fantasy community. For Zvinchuk, this was a serious hobby – in his LiveJournal, the creator of “Rybar” indicated the Shadowdale.ru forum as his own website, where enthusiasts led by Zvinchuk collectively translated books from the world of the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game. In a questionnaire on one of the fantasy forums, Zvinchuk indicated that he administers four sites. He translated fiction and professionally. “Hired by the publishing house FANtastika St. Petersburg to translate the book by Robert Anthony Salvatore Neverwinter,” Zvinchuk wrote in LiveJournal in 2012.
On the Shadowdale.ru forum created by Zvinchuk, there is a separate topic for discussing books by Robert Jordan, the writer from whom the creators of Rybar got the name of the channel.
The war in Ukraine has given rise to a new influential segment in the Russian media space with a million-strong audience — telegram channels specializing in coverage of hostilities. Rybar, with an audience of 1.1 million people, stands apart among them: it publishes the most detailed reports and the most accurate maps of hostilities, Western media and military experts do not hesitate to refer to it. At the same time, Rybar is the only one of the most important and popular military telegram channels that is still anonymous.
An important aspect of Rybar’s work, which distinguishes it from other pro-military channels, is the collection of coordinates of the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Ukrainian strategic objects, which began from the first days of the war, and their publication “to facilitate the work of the allied forces.” There are at least a hundred such posts in Rybar, they are united by the hashtag #goals. When specifying the coordinates, the channel most often refers to local sources – pro-Russian Ukrainian subscribers. In the spring, the channel was created to collect the coordinates of an individual bot (now it is not available). From time to time, Rybar proudly reports that the RF Armed Forces use the coordinates published by him during rocket and artillery strikes. 9image}}{{#icon}}{{{icon}}}{{/icon}}{{/image}}
