Tips for Protecting Children from Environmental Threats

George MacDonald – Sir Gibby » Page 103 » Online books of all genres read for free

In the meantime, the boys continued to follow the woman and followed her into an even more impoverished quarter of the city. She stopped in front of a house, knocked, handed the money to the one who opened it, and went in. Gibby and Donal felt a little relieved again. Of course, the rooming house looked terribly scary and miserable, but at least the poor thing will have a roof over her head, and in our harsh climate, and even in winter, this is the first necessity, you can’t survive without it. Reassured that she would not wander through the bare, cold streets all night, “like a living ghost in Memphis” (as Donal put it), the boys set off home. They could not fall asleep for a long time, and in the morning, first of all, they remembered the unfortunate woman.

– Oh, if my mother were here! Donal sighed.

“Maybe we should talk to Mr. Sclater?” Gibby suggested.

In response, Donal just burst out laughing.

— Yes, he will only say that she should be ashamed of her behavior! he exclaimed. – Only, in my opinion, shame – she had a long time ago – ended a long time ago. He will tell her that she needs to work and earn her living. But, probably, no one gives her a job, although she would be glad to earn at least half a penny a day. Listen, what if we consult Miss Galbraith? It was strange to see Donal and Gibby, so different, seem to change places from time to time, just like the daughters of the minister of Wakefield parish.

“God may be praising Himself from the mouths of babies,” Gibby replied, “but it doesn’t follow that we should ask them for advice in serious matters. Don’t you remember what mom said? Even a fledgling teenager, David could kill a bouncer – a giant, but in order to rule people, he had to go through many trials, gain wisdom and become a real man.

Finally, they went to Mrs. Crawl’s. They did not tell her all their thoughts and doubts, but asked her to find out what kind of woman she was, and to see if she could be helped in any way. Who, if not Mrs. Crawl, will better understand what this unfortunate woman is now and what she is thinking about, because once she herself was in exactly the same position. At least it will be closer and more understandable to her than to the priest and his noble wife.

Mrs. Crawl did not fail them. When they turned to her for advice, those days of her glory and dignity, when she looked after her miserable flock of revelers and drunkards, vividly rose before her eyes. She resolutely and willingly set to work and successfully completed what she was entrusted with, and the good done to another person had a direct, incredible effect on her. There is no better cure for your own sin than to help your neighbor fight his weaknesses. If we just sit and talk about his sins, it will affect us in a completely different way: the vices of our neighbor will seem so terrible and black to us that in comparison with him we will feel like innocent lambs and immediately begin to justify our greed and stupidity. And justifying sin is like cherishing and nourishing it in your heart instead of throwing it away in disgust and horror.

One day early in the semester, as they approached the gates of Miss Kimble’s boarding house, Gibby and Donal saw a thin, haggard man in tattered clothes come out and walk towards them. From time to time he stooped and leaned forward slightly, as if from behind someone was lowering an invisible burden on his back, but then he seemed to shake himself, throwing it off himself, and again walked straight. It was the laird. The boys pulled off their hats, but in response he only raised his eyebrows in amazement and looked at them intently – or rather, tried to look, because his eyes wandered, as if unable to fix his gaze on one thing or another. Now he is completely broke and has come to the city to end his days in a small house belonging to his daughter.

And Mr. Sclater, who was vigilantly and vigilantly watching the material well-being of his ward, had already contacted his attorney and, without disclosing his name and position, bought the entire Glashruach estate – though without saying anything about his purchase to Sir Gilbert.

Chapter 50

Walk

Mr. Galbraith and Ginevra’s new home was on the outskirts of town. It was one of those small, well-built stone houses that are so numerous in Scotland. It had three rooms and a kitchen, above which rose a spacious attic with a dormer window. The house was low, with a wide roof, and separated from the quiet street by a tiny garden.

In summer and autumn, many flowers bloomed there, but now only dry, skinny stems of faded roses stuck out of the ground, and under the roof one could see randomly tangled naked and wiry shoots of honeysuckle. The garden was hidden behind a low stone fence with cast-iron rods at the top, between which in the summer, pleasing the eyes of passers-by, one could see fresh foliage, full of bright buds and inflorescences. But having moved into the house, Mr. Galbraith ordered the cast-iron bars to be hammered with boards to the very top: on the very first day, he discovered that random passers-by, stopping near his fence to admire the luxurious flowers, come too close to his withered, but because of this, not at all dignity no less dear to his heart. He hung a lock on the gate, and the garden, thus, became a kind of monumental arch leading to the house.

Lately, the laird has been digging into the ground more and more often, like those little animals that seem to have even been created in order to be ashamed of themselves all the time, and the only reason they do is that they try to dig deeper into their holes. Not that the laird really was ashamed of himself in the full and true sense of the word. He was only half aware of the dishonesty of his transactions, because usually the proud dodge with all his might from repentance, considering it a shame. To wash means to recognize oneself as dirty. Laird avoided other people’s eyes for one – the only and very wretched reason: he could no longer appear before people with all the dignity of the owner of a glashruakh estate and chairman of a prosperous company. It seemed to him that he was let down and deceived by the very laws of nature: how could it happen that Thomas Galbraith, Esq. , ended up in this damp, nasty little house? He seriously considered whether he should take his native surname Duran again, but decided that he was too well known in the district, and if he tried to hide from prying eyes in a transparent, impenetrable attire of a new name, then people would certainly think that he was doing it. only because he stained his former proud clothes beyond recognition. People would imagine, he told himself (deliberately choosing a vice of which he was not guilty), that he had bequeathed his money to his daughter, while he himself arranged himself in such a way as to use it with impunity.

His inner state was much sadder than his outer misery. He did not know how to occupy his mind with anything other than money transactions. Now there was nothing left for him to do but, like a tormented sailor thrown ashore by a wave, convulsively cling with his hands and feet to the slippery cliff of what had once been his own righteousness (however pathetic and unfaithful it may be), trying not to even miss it. For hours he sat silently, without a single movement, like a thing in itself: the temple, its god and the believer, who came to bow to his god, united in it as in one complete, perfect creation. Only the believer was terribly dissatisfied with his god, and at the foot of the temple a worm swarmed, biting into its very foundation. Ginevra sat across from him, almost as motionless; not quieter, but calmer than in childhood, partly because now she was much less afraid of her father. Looking at the daughter sitting opposite, the laird called her callous and heartless to himself; but it was not so, and he himself was to blame for the fact that she seemed to him so. He became so insensitive to good and evil that it would be easier for him if she lamented her poverty day and night and showered him with reproaches for bringing her to such a state. This is better than calm contentment and humility.

Ginevra didn’t spend much time reading books, but when she did read, it was something really worth reading. The best students won’t rely too much on books. Indeed, at best, only raw and rough material can be extracted from them, from which each person must build his own house. True, she would have read more if her father had not been sitting next to her.

Whenever she picked up a book, it seemed to her that she was entering a warm house, leaving it to shiver in the cold wind. She looked sadly at his emaciated, aged face, forgotten in thoughts that could hardly be called thoughts. Nothing interested him. He never picked up a newspaper, never asked about the news. His eyes constantly wandered from side to side, his lips spread even more, his neck grew thinner and stretched out, and now he even more than before looked like a puppet with limply hanging threads. How many times had Ginevra been ready to throw herself on his chest, to cling to him, if she could hope that he would not push her away from him! From time to time his gaze rested on her with an expression of a vague half-animal prayer, but as soon as she reached out to him with a response gesture, he immediately froze and turned into a living corpse.
