Hear from our families:

My son will actually wake up early and ask to go in early and gets upset if I try to pick him up early. The staff is simply amazing and every week he is coming home with amazing art. Couldn’t ask for better!

— Nisha G. Cleveland Heights, Ohio

Our daughter is new to Audubon this year and the one aspect of her transition that’s been super smooth is her time at Right at School. The team is great, polite, nice to chat with, and most importantly…they care about the kids’ safety and well-being.

— Rahul N. Chicago, IL

My daughter enjoys going to before and aftercare with her friends. The staff also does a great job communicating with parents whether it be in person, an email or telephone call. I greatly appreciate everything they do!!

— CW, Barnegat, NJ

They make a point to have engaging activities to keep the children motivated and involved. I also enjoy the convenience of having the program at my child’s school.

— Briana B. Puyallup, WA

I love everyone who is there for my children in the before and after school programs. They are understanding, caring, and I trust them. I love that my kids are happy and enjoying their time after school.

— Michelle B. – Alamo Heights, TX

What to talk about with children after school and how extracurricular time interferes with everyone

Tips for teachers and parents, a useful guide for future applicants, additional education teacher’s reasoning about extracurricular activities – our bloggers wrote about all this this week.

“Slowers with too tight hugs.” The reverse side of the “friendship” of children and counselors in summer camps

This week on “Mel” they talked a lot about the relationship between older students and schoolgirls with adults. The reason for the next wave of discussions was Nastya Krasilnikova’s podcast “Pupils”. We have already told you what measures should be taken in schools and camps to avoid harassment and abuse of children. And this story from our blogger is a vivid example of how blurred boundaries affect children and why it is not always possible to understand at the moment that a problem exists.

For example, I’m 14. My friend and I are friends with a counselor from a junior detachment, he is a little over 20 years old. We often go to visit him, just chat while sitting on the sports ground or even in the counselor’s room, play with his wards. My girlfriend and I are flattered by this – an adult and handsome guy spends so much time with us!

5 questions to the child instead of “How are you at school?”

A trusting relationship with parents is another way to protect a child from problems that he may encounter in a team. How to make sure that the student is not afraid and wants to talk with parents about anything, talk about his feelings, relationships with friends? They tell in the blog of the Charitable Foundation “Shalash”.

Every family communicates differently, so there are no universal rules on when and how to discuss interests with a child. If you feel the need to interact more with your child, start slowly. Do not ask many questions at once – the child may become confused or feel pressured.

How extracurricular activities interfere with children, teachers and additional education

Schools want to introduce 7 new sports modules. They even discuss the introduction of a module on playing lapta. On the one hand, it’s great that at school you can solve examples, play badminton, and go to karate. On the other hand, what should those who want to go to special stages outside of school do?

In our institution, for example, we need to recruit 3 groups of 15 people. Taking into account the fact that children are loaded into circles and sections at school, the number of potential students is decreasing. Schoolchildren simply do not have time to visit us.

“Suddenly I start whispering”: 7 ways to attract the attention of children in the lesson

A phone, a bird outside the window, a roommate, just a fascinating poster on the wall – a child can be distracted by anything during the lesson. Listening carefully to the teacher for 45 minutes is not an easy task, especially for younger students. How to help children (and yourself) to stay focused, our blogger Lyubov Zubareva told.

Scolding a child for being distracted is pointless. It won’t help. Swearing causes only rejection. This is especially critical for teenagers. The child does not think about how to concentrate, but about how to quickly stop shouting at him. You need to return the attention of the child carefully and tactfully, in a businesslike way, without emotions.

10 changes in the rules for admission to universities in 2023

Our regular blogger Mikhail Lantsman continues to support graduates and talk about all the changes related to the OGE, the Unified State Examination and the admission campaign. This material is about the cancellation of the second wave, the “addition” to the budget, DWI, the deadlines for admission to universities and much more.

In fact, the new admission procedure – 2023 – is another work on the mistakes of lawmakers who piled up a new pyramid of contradictory and controversial algorithms in 2020. The good news is that in 2023 they wanted to make admission better and easier. Bad – it is not entirely clear how the next “brilliant” idea will be implemented in practice.

School –

Grades 1-6 belong to the elementary level of basic school. 7–9classes – to the highest level of the basic school. After basic education, adolescents continue their studies at the second stage, that is, at a vocational school or gymnasium.

Basic and upper secondary education in Finland is free. In addition to education, textbooks and other educational materials are provided free of charge to schoolchildren. School meals are free. While studying at the basic school, Finnish as a second language is taught.

Preparatory education for basic school

Preparatory education for basic school is intended for those children whose Finnish language skills are not yet sufficient to participate in general education. Language skills are assessed by professionals, not by parents. The preparatory education focuses on learning the Finnish language.

Morning and Afternoon Activities

Morning and afternoon activities for schoolchildren are activities that children can participate in before or after school, such as club activities. The activities are intended primarily for first and second grade students.

Home-School Cooperation

Effective home-school cooperation and mutual trust help children learn and enjoy learning. Trust is built when parents and school staff meet often enough to get to know each other. Cooperation is carried out, for example, in the form of evaluation discussions and parent-teacher meetings. In daily life, messages between school and home are often sent via an electronic platform (eg Wilma).

Parents should themselves be an active party in their relationship with the school. If a parent is concerned about something related to the child or their studies, it is very important that they can discuss this with the teacher as soon as possible.

School Attendance and Student Support Services

Children have the right to receive adequate support to learn and attend school. If your child is having problems at school, you should contact your child’s teacher or class teacher. If, for example, a teacher has concerns about a child’s progress, he will definitely contact the student’s parents, and they can work out a support plan together.

Student Support Services can also help with learning and other everyday problems. The teacher can take the initiative if he notices that the student needs support. The child or teen can contact Student Support on their own. Student Support Services are voluntary and must be contacted with the consent of the child/adolescent or, if applicable, their guardian.

Student support services are provided jointly by the Department of Education and Social and Health Services. Its role is to promote and support learning and the physical and mental health of students.

In addition to school health services, i.e. services of a nurse and regular health check-ups and oral health services, schools also offer the services of a school counselor and a psychologist. The facilitator will provide guidance and support if the student is concerned about his mood, he is experiencing difficulties due to the situation in the family or circle of friends. A psychologist supports mental health and acts as an expert when a student has learning difficulties. In addition to school staff and student support, there is cooperation with, for example, the family worker (see glossary), family counseling and child protection services.

Community support for students is the responsibility of the whole school. It can help improve the safety of the school environment and prevent bullying, violence and harassment.

Each school should have its own plan for dealing with bullying, preventing it and responding to situations.

If a school, student support or extracurricular worker has concerns that a child’s growth and development is at risk, they may contact social services in the child’s community with the child or parent. However, if contact with the family is not possible or if there is an urgent need to protect the child, the worker is required to file a complaint with child protection services. You can read more about what happens after you contact or report to Child Protective Services on the How to Become a Social Services Client page.
