Islamic School of Rhode Island

ISRI Board of Trustees reviews policies and rules regarding the operation of the school. The school board consists of 4 members comprising a president, vice president, treasurer director. The principal is present during the board meetings which are scheduled as monthly or more frequently as necessary. 

Board members and the principal are currently representing the Executive Governance Council of ISRI. The members of the Board of Trustees do not receive financial compensation for their activity as Board members.

ISRI Board Members

  • Munawar Ghumman (President)

    Br. Ghumman was born and raised in Pakistan and has an Associate Degree in Electronic Engineering. He has been an ISRI parent since the school opened in 2004. Two of his sons graduated from ISRI in 2010 and moved on to LaSalle Academy, a prestigious high school with honors. His other two children still attend ISRI today. “We are blessed to have an Islamic School right in our own neighborhood, and we have an opportunity to give our children the best Islamic education. It is our duty as parents and Muslims to provide our children with Islamic education, Alhumdulilah. I encourage the Muslim community to give ISRI an opportunity to provide their children with Islamic and secular education.

  • Shahzad Yaqoob (Vice-President)

    Br. Shahzad Yaqoob has supported ISRI since its founding in 2004, serving as a member of the Board of Trustees for about a decade, first as Treasurer and currently as Vice President. A proud parent of four ISRI alumni (Classes of ‘10, ‘11, ‘15, and ‘18), Br. Shahzad has a Master’s in Economics from the University of Karachi, boasts an Associate degree in Electronic Engineering, and is a successful businessman. He is passionate about Islamic knowledge, having taken courses at the Bayyinnah Institute in Quranic and Arabic Studies, studied Fiqh at the Worcester Islamic Center, and is currently enrolled in ShariahProgram’s Classical Arabic course. Br. Shahzad is a gentle, hardworking, active member of the Rhode Island Muslim community, and enjoys spending time with his loving family and many pets, including his beloved cats.

  • Basimah Shihadeh (Secretary & Liaison)

    Sister Basima’s long years of experience in the field of education, equipped her with the knowledge and the learning needed to be in the leadership position, as the school’s Principal, for five consecutive years, 2009-2014, then to be a member of the Board of Trustees for more than 6 years.

    She has an M.A.degree in Education, with a focus on Staff Training, from the University of Rhode Island, in addition to a large number of workshops and professional training in the field of administration, from many highly respectable organizations.

    Sister Basima’s dedication to the mission and vision of the school are so apparent and demonstrated in her hard, continuous service for the school and for the Muslim children of our community.

    Sister Basima is currently working on earning a Certification from the Rhode Island Department of Education, in the area of Pk-12 Building Administration.  

    She has served the school and the community and in sha Allah will continue to do so, enthusiastically, for the sake of Allah.

  • Amjad Kinjawi (Member)

    Dr. Kinjawi has always been a public figure in the Muslim community of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. He started serving The Islamic School of Rhode Island in the year 2004, when it was founded, and till this day he continues to serve as an active Board Member. 

    In addition to his role at ISRI, Dr. Kinjawi is also the Head of RICMA, and a prominent Board Member at Masjid Al-Rahman since the year 2000. 

    At the professional level, Dr. Kinjawi is a well-known Dentist in the area of Massachusetts and a strong believer of Islamic Education for all the Muslim children. He has always supported our school cause with his wisdom, dedication and expertise.

    Dr. Kinjawi worked hand in hand with Dr. Mohammed Abdulrahman, our late school founder, May Allah bless his soul, and will, in sha Allah, continue to work with ISRI for many years to come.

  • Tarik Barakad (Member)

    Brother Tarik is an active community member who has put many hours of dedicated work to support The Islamic School of Rhode Island with his managerial, business background that proved to be a great asset for our school.

    Brother Tarik has served the school for more than five years, during which he was a role model of dedication and enthusiasm for the school’s mission and vision.

    At the professional level, Brother Tarik is a well- respected auditor at one of the largest banks in the country. He utilizes the time he can spare between his work and his family by volunteering as a Consultant at the Board of Trustees. 

    Brother Tarik is an avid believer of Islamic education for his own children, and for all the Muslim children in the community, and is constantly advocating for making it achievable for all the children in the community.
