Baltimore Fishbowl | Daycare center ‘Kiddie Calvert’ to expand to the Village of Cross Keys –

Rendering of Kiddie Calvert at The Village of Cross Keys

The handing off of car seats and the pitter-patter of little feet will soon become common sights and sounds at the Village of Cross Keys with the news that childcare center Kiddie Calvert will relocate there.

Kiddie Calvert—an early childhood education center for infants, toddlers, and preschool-aged children currently housed at the Calvert School campus in Tuscany-Canterbury—plans to expand into the North Baltimore mixed-use community of The Village of Cross Keys in September 2021. Area working families in desperate need of more daycare options and community members eager to see new life injected into the aging Cross Keys are likely to welcome the development.  The childcare center will go into the space below the previous Donna’s restaurant location, near the store Talbots.

The brainchild of visionary developer James Rouse, Cross Keys opened to much fanfare in the 1960s but has struggled in recent years with increasing vacancies in its commercial spaces. The recent $27 million purchase of the commercial assets of Cross Keys by Caves Valley Partners, which promises extensive upgrades, has been met with optimism by current Cross Keys residents like Marjorie Goodman. In January 2020 she heard Arsh Mirmiran, a partner at Caves Valley, discuss the revitalization plans at a Roland Park Civic League meeting. “Now I’m not going anywhere… I have renewed hope,” Goodman was quoted in an article in baltimorefishbowl.com.

Current residents of Cross Keys aren’t alone in their excitement about the community’s pending overhaul. Melissa Hood, director of Kiddie Calvert, says she’s looking forward to expanding the daycare for children ages 10 weeks to five years of age in a central location with new amenities, an outdoor play space, and a dedicated parking area for parents. “We really want to get the reputation of Calvert out to the entire Baltimore community. We weren’t able to do that before,” Hood said.

The original Kiddie Calvert launched at the independent school in 2007 as a service to faculty and staff whose children were too young to attend the K-8 private co-ed school. When Hood came on board as director in 2009, there were only about 10 families enrolled. In 2016, the program moved into renovated space at the original campus and enrollment eventually rose to its current number of about 85 families. Hood says the new, second location—Kiddie Calvert Cross Keys—will be able to accommodate about the same number of children as the original center.

The timing was right, explains Hood. “We saw the need for childcare. Our waitlist continued to expand,” she said.

Local parents can relate. Towson mom Julie Tewey said she started looking for daycare almost immediately after learning she was pregnant. She and her husband toured six daycares within 30 minutes of their home and were waitlisted on all of them. Ultimately, they landed a spot in one daycare—only because her husband was employed at the workplace where it was located. “Finding daycare was one of the biggest headaches and stressors that I never expected as an expecting mother,” Tewey observed.

Others agree. Another local parent said her daycare provider knew she was pregnant with her second child even before her parents did. She felt it was that critical to get on the waiting list for infants as soon as possible—despite having one child already enrolled at the center.

The number of full-day center-based day care programs and family-based child care providers in Baltimore City has dropped in recent years, and the downward trajectory is expected to continue over the next several years, according to data from the Maryland Family Network.

COVID hasn’t helped. “At the peak of COVID we surveyed child care providers in Maryland. Fifty one percent said they may close for good if substantial investments are not made in the industry,” said Doug Lent, communications director at the Maryland Family Network.

“Imagine what would happen to Maryland’s workforce if half of child care closed,” Lent noted. “Many parents, likely women, would leave the workforce.”

The opening of Kiddie Calvert Cross Keys will offer at least a slight reprieve to the supply deficit in Baltimore’s daycare industry. That the program has already established a presence in Baltimore may also work in its favor. “Our intent is to mirror our Tuscany-Canterbury location,” Hood said. “The overall philosophy and mission will be the same.”

Md. child care providers still in ‘survival mode,’ parents wait for child care aid

With 751 fewer child care providers in Maryland 18 months after the COVID-19 pandemic forced many to close or scale back, providers say they are operating in “survival mode” still, struggling to find qualified workers and to offer competitive wages and health benefits.

“We are the workforce who take care of the workforce,” Carolina Reyes, owner of a bilingual child care center in Prince George’s County, told state lawmakers Wednesday in a virtual meeting on the impact of the pandemic on child care services.

Prince George’s County had the biggest loss of child care centers with 141 fewer providers than in January 2020, according to the Maryland State Department of Education. Anne Arundel and Baltimore each have 85 fewer child care providers.

“This is one of the richest states in the country, we need to really invest in … child care — it’s part of the economy, it’s part of commerce, we need to connect the dots,” echoed Chris Peusch, executive director of the Maryland State Child Care Association.

One of the biggest challenges in Maryland is finding qualified people to hire, because the state has specific staff requirements, including having a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential and experience working with children. Around 75% of providers are experiencing workforce shortages, Peusch said.

And when they do find qualified workers, child care providers have to compete with the public school system and retail employers like Target, Starbucks and Kohls, which offer a lot more money per hour than child care providers can, Peusch said.

“They’re going to go to public schools because we cannot compete with the benefits package they provide. We cannot compete with the hourly wage that they provide,” said Holly Frazer, who owns a child care center in Washington County.

Frazer also decried MSDE adding more qualification requirements for child care staff.

“Instead of laxing up or helping or keeping things the same, they’re piling on [requirements], Frazer said. “We are not going to be able to find staff to work for the wages that child care makes,” she said.

The average child care center teacher earns $26,000 a year while a child care center director makes an average of $41,000, according to Peusch. And most providers cannot afford to offer health benefits to their employees.

Frazer also criticized local health departments for having different standards for child care centers and the public school system. Frazer said that if a child tested positive for COVID-19 in her child care center, the local health department will say that child would have to be quarantined for 14 days, but will tell public schools that they only need to quarantine a student if that student has COVID-19 symptoms.

“So what are parents doing? They’re leaving, they’re going to the neighbor down the street … or they’re getting their kids in public school programs, even if that’s not where they want them to be,” she said.

Out of the 7,000 child care centers that have opened since the pandemic, there have been only 24 cases of COVID-19, according to Peusch.

Although 97% of licensed child care providers are open, around half are operating with half as many children as they had, which makes it even more difficult to pay for fixed costs and other expenses.

Kim Ritchey, who owns a child care center in Washington County, said that she served up to 86 children each day, with more on the wait list, before the pandemic. But now she serves 50 children a day and only has two children on her wait list.

“I don’t know where all the kids are,” she said. All child care providers in Washington County are operating at 50% or below in capacity, she said.

MSDE is using $502 million from the federal American Rescue Plan Act to help stabilize the child care industry and support parents to meet the cost of child care, according to Justin Dayhoff, MSDE’s assistant state superintendent for financial planning, operations and strategy.

So far, MSDE has distributed $155 million to over 5,100 child care providers, he said.

President Biden’s $1.75-trillion “Build Back Better” bill — a blueprint to overhaul the country’s health care, climate, education and tax laws — would provide monthly payments to families with children, as well as subsidies up to 7 percent of income to most families for child care.

But relying on emergency federal funds is not sustainable, child care advocates said. Child care providers need continuous state funding to survive, Peusch said.

Child care advocates also criticized payment delays and unresponsiveness from the state’s Child Care Scholarship Program, which provides low-income families with financial assistance. The cost of child care is usually the second or third largest household expense for families, according to the Maryland Family Network.

There’s a “deep and profound misunderstanding” among some families about how to apply to the program, especially among the immigrant community, Reyes said. “I invite you to call that 1-800 number today, and you can see how difficult it is for us to be able to talk with a human being,” she told lawmakers.

In one family a parent lost a job because they could not get a child care scholarship approved by the time the parent had to start work, said Tracey Clay, a child care provider in Montgomery County. These delays also affect child care providers, since they too have to wait an extended period of time to obtain the scholarship money, Reyes said.

Reyes suggested that MSDE create a video that outlines step-by-step how to apply for a child care scholarship and provide a toll-free number that ensures families and care providers can reach a person who can help.

Del. Jared Solomon (D-Montgomery) suggested simplifying the child care scholarship application by removing some questions.

Steven Hicks, MSDE’s assistant state superintendent for early childhood, said MSDE has established online portals to make it easier for families to apply for child care assistance and to make it easier for providers to apply for aid.

“It’s really exciting to hear about the portal … but what I hear a lot from not only the providers but from the families that I talked with is that the process for getting the scholarship is still really difficult,” Solomon said.

To bolster the child care workforce, Del. Ariana B. Kelly (D-Montgomery) suggested automatically offering child care scholarships to child care workers for their own children. Sen. Malcolm Augustine (D-Prince George’s) highlighted that that the next generation of child care industry leaders will likely be from the immigrant community, especially Spanish speakers, which is something to keep in mind for outreach, he said

Sen. Joanne C. Benson (D-Prince George’s) said the state needs to do more for child care providers.

“We have all of this money coming into the great state of Maryland, and I’m just trying to figure out why isn’t it that we aren’t utilizing it where it belongs — and that’s to ensure that every child in the great state of Maryland has a healthy start,” Benson said.

Sevil Aliyeva recalls on the eve of her birthday: “Dad said: I won’t give up so easily!” – 100 years

Today, October 12, is the birthday of the daughter of the founder of the Third Azerbaijan Republic, Heydar Aliyev, Sevil Aliyeva. A close friend of our editorial staff, Sevil-khanum, will meet this day, as usual, modestly, with his family. However, we did not miss the opportunity to be the first to congratulate dear and respected Sevil-khanum, asking her on the eve of the approaching 100th anniversary of the Founding Father to become a guest of our rubric, established long before the decree of the President of Azerbaijan, which declared the coming year 2023 the year of Heydar Aliyev.

May haqqin. az opened a rubric dedicated to the founder of the Third Republic – 100 years – Man-epoch. And once a week, our editorial office publishes an interview with a well-known researcher of the life of Heydar Aliyev – publicist Elmira Akhundova with prominent Soviet, Azerbaijani party and state figures. Most of these impressive and extraordinary conversations were recorded by E. Akhundova during various periods of the existence of the Aliyev government.

Sevil Aliyeva, in turn, recalled her detailed conversation with E. Akhundova some time after the death of Heydar Aliyev. Part of this conversation was published in 2005 on the pages of the Russian newspaper Izvestia and caused a wide resonance throughout the post-Soviet space. On the eve of her birthday, Sevil Aliyeva agreed to publish the full version of the conversation. We present to your attention the memories of S. Aliyeva about her great Father and the Founding Father of the new Azerbaijan Republic.

    – How did you remember your father in your earliest childhood: the first purely childhood impressions and feelings. Did he take you to kindergarten, did he go for a walk with you, did he read fairy tales at night? Or did he not have time for this because of the huge workload?

    – Father always had time for his family. Although he really was all the time overly busy at work. I never went to kindergarten, because I was very attached to Mom. Once she tried to get me into a children’s group, then there were such small groups – the nannies took the children for a walk, looked after them during the day, studied. One day Mom left me on the boulevard in one of these groups and hid behind a palm tree to see what would happen. I had such a tantrum that she immediately took me away and never again tried to repeat this experiment.

It has always been difficult for me to stay at home without my parents and housekeepers. Especially when they went on vacation. Since childhood, I have been very sensitive to the people around me. Later, I began to understand why I was so bad with nannies. Almost all of them quit after a while, because I exposed them for being dishonest. They could lie to their parents about how my brother and I behaved, how we ate, and so on.

I also had a very small social circle at school. I feel good only with sincere people , who treat me kindly. Therefore, my home was ideal for me. There was a special atmosphere in the house, where everyone was friends and understood each other. I mean the parents, the younger brother, whom I always took great care of and guarded him by the classroom, because he was two years younger than everyone else. I was afraid that other children might offend him. It all speaks of the atmosphere in which we grew up. When children see honesty, love and care in a family, they cannot be different.

Sometimes Dad and I went for a walk when Mom was late at work. We went to the sea and he taught me to swim. I even remember how Papa used to tie my bow.

    – Did your father follow your studies, grades, attend school meetings? To whom did you confide your first girlish secrets – to your father or mother, from whom did you ask for advice, help? In general, were you frank with your father? How and to what extent did Geidar Alievich participate in your upbringing? Was he strict, stern with you, or, on the contrary, soft and emotional?

    – In the second grade I got the first two in arithmetic. And I remember that I didn’t go to bed until Papa came to inform him immediately and show him a notebook with a mark. I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep until I told him. As soon as he entered, I met him at the door with a notebook in his hands. But he appreciated my honesty and did not say anything to me, did not make any remarks. And then I calmed down.

My father valued honesty very much. He did not accept even the slightest lie. I understand this, because I myself am intolerant of lies, even the smallest ones. I was honest with both parents. Of course, I was closer and more frank with Mom, we were like one person. She knew absolutely everything that was in my soul. Relations with the Pope were also trusting, like those of close friends. I could tell him about my girlfriends, about my studies and about people in general. He gave me advice and we always joked. Jokes, humor in our house were an integral part of our lives.

    – Did the problem of “fathers and children” exist in your family? Were there any disagreements with your parents about your tastes and passions in music, movies, hobbies, manner of dressing, in choosing a future specialty? Geidar Alievich was a domineering person at work. And in the family, this authority somehow manifested itself?

    – You know, we had no disagreements at all, because Mom and Dad – it was such an unusual combination. He once told me that if he hadn’t met Mama, he probably would never have gotten married at all. She complemented him so much and tried so hard to adapt to his mood – she herself had a very soft, diplomatic character – that there was simply no reason for conflicts. And then, he did not make any remarks without reason. And we, children, tried to behave in such a way as not to spoil the mood of our parents.

My parents have always treated my hobbies with respect and understanding. I loved listening to Western music, then there was not much choice in Baku, and I asked someone to bring records from abroad. I was very fond of short skirts and platform shoes, it was fashionable at that time.

Dad was a modern man. He always understood me, especially since he himself loved fashionable, good clothes. If he went somewhere, he brought me and Mama beautiful outfits. He didn’t like it if I didn’t take care of myself and didn’t look very good. He even reprimanded me. I remember I had a very comfortable, but somewhat old-fashioned, long skirt. And Dad once said to me: “So that I don’t see this skirt on you anymore.”

As for choosing a specialty, Mom and Dad advised me to enter a medical school. I have been preparing to become a doctor since childhood. Dad really wanted me to be an eye doctor like Mom. He believed that this profession for a woman is the most beautiful. And I was preparing to enter the medical school, I even studied chemistry and biology. But then this idea had to be abandoned. I often went to work with Mom, and when I walked along the corridor and saw people with bandages on their eyes, I involuntarily closed my eyes. So, almost with my eyes closed, I went to her office. When the time came to decide, I realized that I could not be a doctor. I couldn’t stand the sight of blood. Once they took blood from my finger, and I lost consciousness.

As a result, I applied to the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the Azerbaijan State University, which was then considered the most prestigious. Although I did not have much interest in oriental languages. Girls from my class went there and they advised me. I studied well at the university, studied Arabic. Although I did not study well at school, especially in exact subjects.

    – We know about the great mutual feeling of Heydar Aliyevich and Zarifa khanum, about their reverent relationship. Therefore, I ask about what is unknown: as in every family, yours, probably, also had disagreements. How did they decide? Did the father talk to his mother about his work, did he consult with her on some issues? Did she tell him about her scientific developments? Could Zarifa Aliyev ask for someone, and did Heydar Aliyev accept these requests? And you? You must have been annoyed with requests to get someone a job, solve some issue, etc. Could you turn to your father with a similar request?

    – There were no fundamental disagreements. Well, maybe there were some minor domestic disagreements, so empty that there is nothing to remember. Sometimes Mom expressed her opinion about some people he trusted. He was generally a trusting person. Father consulted with Mother on various issues. From childhood, I firmly understood one thing to myself: nowhere can you talk about what you heard in the house. After all, I heard and knew about much of what he said to Mom, but all this remained in me. Mom always gave dad the right advice. It happened that she did not like someone, and she told him about it. Sometimes he disagreed with her. Some time passed, and he himself was disappointed in these people.

About requests from strangers. We tried not to. But at the same time, there were moments when it was necessary to help. If someone needed help, help was provided. There were times when Mom asked Dad for a nanny or a nurse at work who were in dire need of housing. That is, if the request was really worthwhile, she always tried to help.

    – For the first time in the former USSR, Heydar Aliyev brought his wife, as they say, “into the big world.” She was with him everywhere, at all official events, at premieres, concerts, etc. She was known by the creative intelligentsia, the public. This was not practiced in the USSR. How did she feel in the status of the wife of the first person of the republic?

    – You know, she was an unusually modest person by nature. Even during some official events in the Lenin Palace, Mom either came to an almost empty hall and sat down before everyone else, or, if the hall was already full, we went upstairs and went down to our seats from the upper rows. Not like, say, the wives of ministers, who sometimes were late on purpose and went upstairs so that everyone looked at them. Mom didn’t like to draw attention to herself. She always asked security: warn the TV people not to film us. And the fact that father went to all events with Mom is because he was very attached to her. He couldn’t live without her. She was like air to him.

When he traveled to Moscow for work – to plenums, meetings, sessions – he took Mama with him, and Mama took us. Mom could not stay without children. And the four of us went everywhere. We were with him in 1976, when he was elected as a candidate member of the Politburo. We were so happy for him, so proud of him!

    – Was Zarifa Aliyeva interested in her father’s work? He was proud that he had such an educated wife – a famous doctor, scientist?

    – Very. He was proud and inspired her to move on. She was very attached to the children, to the family, and this was more important for her. Family was in the first place for her. Dad knew what a great scientific potential Mom had, how talented she was, and therefore developed in her the desire to go further. I remember: at night, when we all went to bed, she sat and wrote her works – articles, books. When we went to Moscow, she constantly had contacts with fellow ophthalmologists. But she did not have ambition, the desire to become famous, to stand out. What she has achieved is the result of her natural talent and great diligence. And the Pope, knowing her potential, could not accept the fact that it was gone. You asked about disagreements, disputes. It was on this basis that they sometimes argued: he told her not to lose pace, to continue her scientific research. He set her up and inspired her all the time.

    – How did you celebrate Heydar Alievich’s birthday, what did you give him?

    – He often forgot about them. He worked so hard that he forgot his birthday. We wrote greeting cards to him as a child. And so to specifically invite someone to a birthday party – this was not the case.

Dad didn’t like celebrating birthdays at all. And it was out of the question that his subordinates, colleagues presented some gifts to him or Mom. Once our friend brought a simple vase for someone’s birthday, so Dad said to Mom: “Give it back to her immediately. ” And the vase was the simplest, made of ordinary glass.

    – Heydar Aliyev, when he already became the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan, still had days off, he went on vacation. How did he spend his free time, what did he do?

    – In winter, on Sundays, we went out of town, to Zagulba. We lived there during the summer. Our only social circle was our neighbors in the dacha – the chairman of the Supreme Council Khalilov, the chairman of the Council of Ministers Ibragimov, the second secretary Kozlov and the commander of the army Olifer. And, of course, our sincere family friends Vitaly Sergeevich and Nadezhda Alekseevna Krasilnikovs. We talked very often, Mom was friends with Nadezhda Alekseevna, and I was friends with their daughter Anechka. Dad and Mom were very fond of jokes, fun, they liked to arrange Sunday dinners. Mom played the piano, Dad sang. And everyone had a lot of fun and good. In the summer we sometimes ate lunch on the beach.

Dad loved to swim. My brother and I grew up by the sea. I spent my childhood in the KGB Rest House in the village of Bilgya. When Papa became the first secretary, and we moved to Zagulba to his country residence, at first I missed my friends. Bilgah had a large territory, and I had many peers there.

We went with the whole family to Yalta when Papa took a vacation. There were good state dachas. We had breakfast and went to the beach. Then they came back and had lunch. Dad worked with papers, called Baku on HF. Watched movies in the evenings. Parents sometimes went to Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev’s dacha. My Mom was friendly with his wife Victoria Petrovna.

    – Did Geidar Alievich have the opportunity to read anything, being the head of the republic? Which writers did you especially like – what did you prefer from the classics, from modern writers? What films did you like? What was his favorite actor? We know that he was very musical and loved to sing to the accompaniment of Zarifa Aliyeva. And what did he perform, what specific songs?

    – Dad knew literature very well, especially classical literature. He told us that he read all this at school. He knew the world classics well, he quoted Shakespeare, for example, from Hamlet. Loved Hussein Javid.

He liked comedy films, especially Soviet ones. I could watch “Office Romance”, “Mimino”, comedies with the participation of Igor Ilyinsky – “Carnival Night”, “Old Acquaintance” several times. He generally liked to laugh.

He liked to sing very much, often to the accompaniment of Mama he sang the song of Tofik Kuliyev “Senede galmaz”. Sometimes he forgot the words, she quietly prompted him. And from Russian songs, he loved the song from the movie “Night Patrol”. I still remember the words from this song: “Even a bird is not fit to live without its homeland.” I think Mark Bernes sang it. Two songs about Azerbaijan performed by Rashid Behbudov and Muslim Magomayev were very dear to him.

    – Who else did your parents like from Soviet pop singers?

    – Muslim Magomayev and Sofia Rotaru. Dad and Mom met Sophia Rotaru personally during the Days of Ukrainian Culture in Azerbaijan, they really appreciated her for her intelligence of performance and big, beautiful voice. They especially liked the song “Swan Fidelity” by Evgeny Martynov and Andrey Dementyev, performed by Sofia Rotaru. And with Muslim Magomayev and his wife Tamara Sinyavskaya, our entire family was also connected by a long-standing personal friendship.

Papa also liked the song “Millions of scarlet roses” performed by Alla Pugacheva. When Alla Pugacheva was in Baku in 2001, she sang this song at Daddy’s request. During the performance, she approached the Pope and they sang the chorus together. This song makes me feel special because Mom and Dad loved to dance to it. This was their favorite song.

In the 70s, the melody “El Bimbo” was popular. I remember when we were on vacation in Yugoslavia in 1976, we often heard it there in restaurants and clubs. And he really liked her too. And in the early 70s, being on one of the first official foreign trips to Syria and Lebanon, the Pope brought me a record with the melody of Francia Ley that he loved for the movie “Love Story”.

But the most precious song for him was mine – “Come back, my love”, which I dedicated to Mom. Every time the Pope listened to her, tears appeared in his eyes. Even when it was still just a melody without words, he said that she was associated with Mom and his state after her departure. When I played this melody in the presence of Muslim Magomayev, he told me that I need to write words to the music, and he will certainly perform this song. The author of the words was the famous poet Nikolai Dobronravov, who was personally acquainted with Mom and treated her very warmly. I remember that individual lines were presented in several versions, and Papa and I chose from them those that most accurately conveyed our feelings. This song is doubly dear to me now, because for me it is a memory of Mom and Dad.

    – What were Heydar Aliyev’s favorite dishes?

    – He didn’t like greasy food. He really liked the Nakhchivan cuisine. The woman who cooked dinners for us used to work for my Mom’s parents. She knew me from the day I was born. Aunt Nina cooked well, in the style of my grandmother Layla. She had an Irevan-Nakhchivan style.

But Papa also liked to try new dishes. I remember that in 1976 we all went together to Yugoslavia. It was a wonderful vacation! Every day on the beach we ate spaghetti. Dad perceived any cuisine – both Eastern and European. He told Mom that somewhere he even tried frogs. Mom was horrified because she was very picky about food. If I went somewhere, I ate only what I was sure of. Mostly chicken meat. And Dad loved to try new things. We ate oysters with him.

    – How did you perceive the change in the fate of your father – moving to Moscow, a new high position? How did Zarifa Aliyeva feel in Moscow? Was she happy about the change in her husband’s political biography?

    – Both Mom and I were happy about this. Firstly, because by that time we, Ilham and I, were living and studying in Moscow. Ilham studied at MGIMO, and I was a postgraduate student at the Institute of Oriental Studies. Mom divided her time between the two cities. She couldn’t leave Papa either, and she missed her children. Therefore, she was pleased with the new appointment of the Pope. Although, of course, Mom loved Baku very much and always came here. But the Pope did not want to leave Azerbaijan. When Andropov suggested that he move to Moscow, he hesitated. Dad said that Yuri Vladimirovich was even offended: “Don’t you want to help me?” Andropov needed trusted people. We didn’t have any anxiety. Andropov took it with good intentions.

By the way, Papa, my little daughter Zarifa and I were the first inhabitants of the dacha in Gorki-10. Mom arrived later, because for some time she had been collecting things in Baku. At that time, I already had my own apartment in Moscow, but how could I leave dad alone? And then, the Pope wanted us all to live together – one big family.

When Mom arrived in Moscow, the first person she invited to the dacha in Gorki-10 was the wife of the late Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev, Victoria Petrovna. She came to us with her great-granddaughter Galya. Mom always treated Victoria Petrovna very warmly, tried to support her with her attention. Although at that time criticism of Brezhnev had already begun, and inviting his wife to the government dacha was in itself an act.

    – When a heart attack occurred, Heydar Aliyev showed amazing strength of mind, he continued to work right in the hospital, arranging meetings. He never doubted for a moment that he would return to the “system”?

    – He never had a period of hesitation. Although what happened on May 11, 1987 was a shock to us. Because the Pope was a very healthy person. He never even had a cold. He could throw my six-year-old daughter almost up to the ceiling. He was very athletic: he ran, swam. Therefore, the heart attack was an absolute surprise. For a whole week we did not know what the outcome would be. Then we were told that after such a heart attack, a very small percentage of people survive.

We were in the hospital all the time. I begged the doctors to tell me the truth, asked them: “Will he return to a full life after this?” We were not allowed to see him for the first few days. In general, there is still a lot of incomprehensible in this story. And I still have the feeling to this day that all this was provoked. Because there is logic in it. At that time, Gorbachev wanted to remove him from the Politburo, dismiss him. And the Father could be alienated only in this way. Otherwise, why would Gorbachev “hook”? The Pope never gave a reason to resign. I remember he told us that he wouldn’t give up so easily. Once Kamran Bagirov came to his dacha, he told him: “If they force me to resign, I will not retire. I just won’t give up. I will expose him, present such arguments that it will be an explosion.” Can you imagine what Aliyev could do with his authority all over the world? Naturally, our house was bugged, this is one hundred percent. It’s a different story if I tell you what kind of people we lived there, what servants we had. They were all members of the KGB. They recorded everything, all our conversations, movements, and then they reported where necessary. I think that the fact that we were not Russians, but newcomers, also played a role. Therefore, there was more attention to us …

We’ve always been bugged. Therefore, everything that the Father said to Kamran Bagirov and what he told us became known to Gorbachev. Dad knew about it. One day he asked me: “Please buy me simple flannelette shirts.” I couldn’t understand why he had them. And then he explained: “If he wants to send me to retire, I will go to work as a worker in a factory. Ordinary workers. This will be a very unusual case. Therefore, I will need flannelette shirts.

When he said this to Bagirov, I remember that fear appeared in me: why is he telling him this?

    – Maybe he told him that on purpose? Maybe he wanted to know about his determination to go to the end there, at the very “top”? And did they draw the appropriate conclusions? Maybe Bagirov told where to go about this conversation?

    – Anything is possible.
