About the Provider

Description: Head Start is a comprehensive child development program designed to meet the educational, emotional, social, health, and nutritional needs of children and families. The program encompasses much more than what is generally thought of as a preschool program. The overall goal of Head Start is to bring about a greater degree of “social competence” to children and their families. Social competence refers to the everyday effectiveness in dealing with both present environment and later responsibilities in school and life. Children and families leave Head Start more confident in their own abilities and ready to succeed.

Baden-Powell, you are not a genius!

Baden-Powell, you are not a genius!

After my heart surgery in 2011, it became difficult for me to go to the camps, and therefore I could not take part in the XXXI CRA, which was conducted by St.skm. Natasha Konon in the summer of 2014 in Novy Pavlovsk. My scouting/intelligence lectures were printed and distributed to the cadets. The course regulations say that this subject has 3 hours and should cover Baden-Powell, the history of scouting, the history of intelligence and parallel organizations, and all this must be completed in 3 hours. It turned out, except for the preface, 24 pages, which can be read slowly in 3 hours. nine0005 Cadets were supposed to write their opinions on the topics covered, but out of 25 cadets, only 13 sent me their written papers and only 3 mentioned Baden-Powell.
Grisha Levitsky wrote: “When we studied the history of intelligence in the camp as kids, Baden-Powell (and with him O.I. Pantyukhov and others Anokhin) seemed almost a mythical figure, a giant whose achievements are completely unique for ordinary people (like us). Records such as Slava’s show us that in reality this is just (although not a simple) person, that he has his own shortcomings, and that what he does comes out of love for his homeland . .. “. nine0005 Further, Grisha reminds me that I said “Baden-Powell is no genius, he had no brilliant ideas” and that I said that “for that time, this (i.e. his ideas and writings) was something the new, the unfamiliar. And, of course, the tsar was so impressed by the Englishman’s book that he ordered it translated into Russian” and asks me the question: “Is it fair to say that Baden-Powell had no brilliant ideas?”
To answer this question, we must first find out what is meant by the word “genius” in Russian. nine0005 Sergei Ivanovich Ozhegov (1900–1964), in his newest explanatory dictionary of the Russian language, explains the word “genius” as follows: “Brilliant. 1. Possessing genius G. poet. 2. Peculiar to genius A work of genius. For the word “genius” Ozhegov gives the following explanation: “Genius. 1. Highest creative ability Literary Mr. Tolstoy. 2. A person who has this ability. Lomonosov was a genius.”
It seems to me that Baden-Powell is far from Tolstoy and Lomonosov.
It seemed to the Emperor in 1908 that Baden-Powell’s book “Young Scout” might be of interest to those who at that time worked with amusing people. Me a book by Baden-Powell at 1931 did not seem interesting. I would like to know what Grisha found interesting in the book “Young Scout”?
Natasha Falcon-Scutt writes that she is “very interested in the source of Scouting and Baden-Powell (BP) himself and what influenced him to develop this approach.” We are well aware from the words of BP himself that, having arrived in England, he compared the boys in London with the boys in Mafeking and drew a conclusion not in favor of the Londoners. BP had acquaintances and connections with The Boys’ Brigade. Their work is similar to work with amusing in Russia. BP wanted to bring the boys closer to nature and add something new. nine0005 Once new was the first gymnastic platform, which appeared in Germany in 1809. It was equipped with recently invented “gymnastic apparatus” – “goat”, “horse”, “parallel bars”. This aroused interest among young people over 18 years old. For young people aged 16 and over, the YMCA (YMCA), founded in England in 1844, became something new.
The Czech Jan Herkel proclaimed pan-Slavism in 1829, and Miroslav Tyrsh embodied this idea by founding in 1862 in the Czech Republic, which was then part of Austria, the Sokol Union for youth over 18 years of age. Soon falconry became a mass youth organization not only among those Slavic peoples who were under the rule of Austria-Hungary and Germany, but also among everyone in general. Falconry has become something new and inspiring. nine0005 In 1883 Boyce Brigades for children appeared in England, and in 1885 the YMCA held the first youth camp. At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, the Finnish writer Zakhary Topelius in his stories began to urge children to “listen to the voice of conscience and the voice of nature.” This is how the May Unions movement was born, whose members, boys and girls, swore not to destroy bird nests, help cats and dogs in trouble, and plant trees. In 1902, the famous Canadian naturalist, writer and artist Ernest Seton-Thompson began to play Indians with his children. The movement became known as the Woodcraft Indians. Seton-Thompson even accused BP of plagiarism, but did not sue him, and even at one time led the scouting movement in the United States. nine0005 BP did not come up with anything new, but only continued what had been started. From the YMCA he borrowed the camp, from the May Union law is a friend of animals, and from Seton-Thompson Indian road signs, a whole page, without attribution. Baden-Powell’s scouting is not brilliant, but primitive. Scouting today is not like it was 100 years ago. From the BP we have preserved the symbolism, it has a terrible power, but it is not the basis of scouting. Today, scouting is based on a link system, which belongs to the Englishman Roland Philips, Agapov owns the BCS courses for leaders and the Mystery Camp, which laid the foundation for cyclic games, Svetov works with singles, the Pole Kaminsky has cyclic games among the Poles and Russians. Here are the names of people who have made a valuable contribution to the creation of today’s Russian intelligence. Today, BP’s book Scouting for Boys is of interest only to historians. When I wanted to buy this book from an American Scout store, they told me they didn’t have it and advised me to contact Canadian Scouts. nine0005 Natasha Falcon-Scutt writes further: “BP was very interested in Zulu discipline and he adapted many of their ways of reconnaissance” and asks if I can add examples to this. Alas, I can’t. Didn’t go into those details.
Natasha does not understand the comment about the concentration camps, which were created for the Boers not by BP, but by Lord Fredrick Roberts. I jokingly called the corps that was supposed to finish off the Boer partisans and which was commanded by BP “peacekeepers”. BP is involved in the brutal massacre of the peaceful Boer population, as before with the black Zulus and Matabels. BP was even proud of such “feats”. He removed a necklace of wooden beads from one of the murdered Negro chiefs and then gave two beads from the necklace to the graduates of the leadership course at Gilwell. These wooden beads have become a symbol of these courses, a symbol of the victory of whites over blacks. Can you imagine the feelings of a Negro Scout leader who graduated from the Gilwell courses and received such a course symbol? nine0005 Archpriest Yaroslav Belikov asks “was BP really a spy for Great Britain, which he was caught doing only in Russia (which BP himself spoke about in a joking manner)?” BP observed in Russia in Krasnoe Selo in 1887 testing military balloons and searchlights for air defense, and he and his brother were caught doing this. BP was caught not only in Russia. He wrote in his book My Adventures as a Spy (1st ed. 1915, 2nd ed. 1924) that he was also caught by the Austrians in Bosnia, but he also managed to escape. It seems to me that there is nothing shameful in his work as a spy. nine0005 More shameful in the biography of BP is that in 1927, after the scouts were banned in Italy, he went to negotiate with the Nazis about the admission of their fascist youth balilla to the Boy Scout International Bureau, and an invitation to the world Jamboree in Gödölö (Hungary) in 1933 Mr. not German pfadfinder-emigrants, but as guests of the observers of the Hitler Youth. And one, and another and the third does not go in favor of BP.
It should be noted that BP came to Russia in 1911 to meet with Emperor Nicholas II in St. Petersburg and was invited to Moscow by Zakharchenko, who was visiting him in England, in which he, as the author of the book “Young Scout”, could not refuse. Having agreed to one and the other, the Russian authorities did not allow BP, as an escapee from house arrest, to meet with intelligence officers in St. Petersburg and Tsarskoye Selo. nine0005 It is known that during his stay in Malta in 1890, BP was accepted as a knight of the Maltese Order of the Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem, which the Orthodox Church considers Masonic.
Whether we like BP or don’t like it is not important. He is our backstory, and the scouts should be aware of him. From him we have a left handshake, a fleur-de-lis sign, a three-finger salute, the “Be Ready” motto, and a triangular tie. All this symbolism is accepted by almost all scouts of the world. Russia needs friendly relations with the youth of the whole world, which our enemies want to isolate and drive into the borders of the Moscow Principality. But we don’t need to create a cult of BP’s personality and declare his birthday a “Brotherly Thought Day”. He didn’t deserve it. If we celebrate, then the birthday of Oleg Ivanovich Pantyukhov is closer for us. nine0003

Baden Powell — Radio JAZZ

Sai, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. He got his unusual name for a Brazilian thanks to his grandfather, who led the Boy Scout movement in Brazil and admired the creator of scouting, Briton Robert Thompson Baden Powell. nine0003

The boy’s father Lino de Aquino was a talented violinist, their house was always open to his musician friends, so Baden grew up in the world of melodies and creativity. From early childhood, he begins to master the piano and cello, and later seriously takes guitar lessons under the guidance of the famous guitarist Jame Florence. As a result, after several years of intensive studies, Baden turns into a young virtuoso, “collecting” all the first places in talent competitions. And since the age of 15, he has been professionally accompanying singers and performs in numerous groups playing in various styles. nine0003

Gradually, he begins to try his hand as a composer. In 1959, Baden and singer Bobby Blanco recorded “Samba Triste” – a composition that will be a great success among both listeners and musicians (countless cover versions have since been made). And in 1962, the guitarist met the composer, singer and poet Vinichos de Moraes – as a result of their cooperation, songs appeared that became classics of Brazilian music. Their bossa nova, which was then gaining momentum, was intertwined with Afro-Brazilian flavor – candomblé, capoeira and samba motifs. One of their songs, “Samba da Bencao” (“Blessed Samba”), sounds in the famous film “Man and Woman” by Claude Lelouch. Powell will collaborate with other artists and create compositions for which he will be called “one of the brightest representatives of the romantic bossa nova style. ” nine0003

Powell is gaining recognition outside of Brazil: in 1963 he performs with great success at the Paris Olympia, in 1966 he releases the album “Tristeza on guitar”, which received wide world recognition. In the same 1966, he played with Stan Getz in New York, and in 1967 he performed at the Berlin Jazz Festival with Barney Kessel and Jim Hall. In the following years, he would often live, perform and record intermittently in Europe, predominantly in France and Germany.

In the late 70s, Powell’s career gradually began to decline – the fashion for bossa nova passed, in addition, the musician began to have health problems. But he still continued to work – he performed solo and as a session musician, wrote music, received a musical degree from the university. He performed with his children (they followed in his footsteps: Felipe is a pianist, and Marcel is a guitarist), toured Europe with another favorite of Brazil – accordionist Sivuka. Powell’s musical activity continued until 2000, until his death.
