— Look, we are approaching the Continental Divide93! – and no one understands what I said. I don’t know what this company should be interested in. Why are they mad at me? I didn’t hang out with Lucca. And I didn’t kiss him on the cheek. Or gave the decoration of the native Indians. Well, okay. If they want to play silent, then I’m going to win this game. To be honest, it looks like they don’t want me to be happy. One step forward, two back. I’m so damn tired of this car and all of them.

I turn up the volume, fold my arms, close my eyes, and plan to sleep until we get to the Grand Canyon. I can’t believe I miss the ranch and that this trip is coming to an end. I want to see my family and my girlfriends. I want to sleep in my bed. I want to end all these stupid lawsuits and get back into my daily summer routine. It sucks! Everything in me boils with irritation. I’ve had enough of these three. I wonder if I can ignore them for the rest of the trip. It had been a few days since we were in Dollywood and I was ready to end this roller coaster.

* * * * *

About half an hour later, Matty hands me a packet of mint gum.

— Do you want to? he asks. I pretend to be asleep.

A few minutes later, Spencer announces:

— We are almost at Gallup94.

I also ignore him. I play by the same rules as they do. I hope they figure it out right now.

“We’ll stop for a bite to eat and gas when we get there,” Logan instructs everyone, “if she wants to sleep or pretends to sleep, let her do it.

I really want to kick him in the back of the head, but I keep pretending to be asleep. Also, I can eat without talking. A minute later, the car decelerates before coming to a stop and Logan parks. It was fast. But when Logan starts pounding on the steering wheel and yelling, “Damn, damn, damn,” I open my eyes and see that we are on the side of the road, but not in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant.

– Flat tire? Matty asks.

Spencer bends down to look at the sensors.

“Ran out of gas,” he sighs.

This is so unlike Logan. His personality leaves a lot to be desired, but I have always felt safe around this guy. He is like my dad: he always keeps everything under control, always aware of all the little things, such as, for example, when exactly we run out of gas, where and when we should be. I feel a little sorry for him, but I quickly drive away this feeling.

— Matty and I will go along the highway and get some gas. The gas station is only a couple of miles away,” says Logan. I look along the road. From here I can see the next exit. It seems that it is close, but on the open road it is not so. Who knows how long it will take them. It’s disgustingly hot outside. “Spencer, you and Rosie stay in the car.

I take a bottle of water out of my bag and hand it to Matty.

– Take it. And get yourself some more water at the gas station for the ride back. You need to replenish your fluids.

“Thank you, Rosie.” He doesn’t look excited about having to make this long and tiring journey with Logan Grim.

I watch them go until their shapes blur in the haze that rises from the pavement due to the heat. Then I join Spencer, who is sitting on the trunk and plucking the strings on his guitar. He plays a classic rock riff with Guitar Hero and moves on to the next song.

– This is my Monsters of Rock Guitar medley.

“You’re really good,” I say, “how about playing what I know.

Without hesitation, he moves on to the chorus of “Rosalita”.

– Am I that predictable? New Jersey girl who loves Bruce?

– Predictable? He shakes his head and smiles, no.

– Can’t deny my love for Bruce.

— There is nothing wrong with that. He is a genius. Anyway, I know you were named after this song.

“Matty,” I sigh.

– He talks about you all the time. You know…

I stop him by raising my hand. I feel embarrassed, for myself and Matty. Spencer is about to say something that somehow, I always knew.

– I don’t think I should hear it.

– Understood. No words. Does this also apply to my brother? You know why he acts like that, right?

How about Avery? I want to say. But I really don’t want to delve into the soul of Logan or Matty or even Avery. I already turned my personal life into chaos. There is no need to create a love diamond. Instead, I take the guitar from Spencer.

– Do you think you can teach me how to play this thing?

Are you kidding?

— No, seriously. I want you to explain me the same way Matty did. I want to learn how to play at least one song.

– Good. Let’s start with a G chord.

Spencer places the guitar in my lap. He takes my left hand and puts it on the fretboard and my right hand on the strings. Then he gently manipulates my pinky, middle and forefinger, placing them in the correct position on the nylon strings.

– Press these three strings with your fingers. Be careful not to hit the others.

I try to do as he says. It’s not easy to keep them.

“Okay,” Spencer tells me, “now put your thumb like this,” he takes my right hand, “and play.” He guides my hand along the five strings.

“That sounds stupid,” I say.

—Yes. Playing the guitar is harder than it looks.

– I can’t hold the strings and play at the same time. It is not comfortable.

“I hate to say this…” Spencer trails off.

— What? Think you can’t teach me?

– You may not want to study when you hear this: you will have to cut your fingernails.

— What?

— Art requires sacrifice.

I look at my hands and the cute gel manicure I did with Avery. I don’t have very long nails and don’t wear false acrylic nails or anything like that, but still. I love this length and their sheen. Do I want to sacrifice my happy hands?

I take a deep breath.

– I don’t have nail clippers.

Spencer takes the keys out of his pocket. Of course he has them on his keychain. Near the pocket knife.

“Give it here,” I say. I cut off all ten and throw them on the ground.

“I’m proud of you,” Spencer says. His face is so cute when he smiles.
