Learning Centers – Abacus School of Austin

Our Learning Centers

Our learning centers encourage creativity and movement throughout the day and are an essential part of the Abacus curriculum at every age-level. All of our students, from the youngest infants and toddlers to our Preschool and Kindergarten friends, get to spend time in the library, gymnasium, computer lab, creative movement studio, and art studio, as well as receive lessons in Spanish.

Creative Movement Studio

(All-Ages)

The Creative Movement Studio is spacious and enjoyed by all age groups.

In this studio, children can dance to music and develop their intra-personal and social skills. Each class is encouraged to put in a yoga video (mats are provided) or other movement DVD. With its large mirrors and dance bar, it is the perfect place to practice ballet and tap moves. Self-defense class is offered as well. In addition, you can learn to play the guitar and piano from our enrichment instructors.

Children present their achievements in yearly recitals.

Art Studio

(Young Preschool, Preschool, Pre-K, Kindergarten, After School)

Here at Abacus, our curriculum encourages each child to use their creativity. Each child, starting in our Young Preschool program, will visit the art studio each day for a 30-minute lesson with our degreed art teacher. The lessons are built around the monthly and weekly themes so that the art lessons compliment what they are learning in the classroom.

For our younger learners (infant and toddler care) art projects are conducted in their classrooms on a regular basis so that they can begin to explore their creativity.

Spanish

(Preschool, Pre-K, Kindergarten)

Our Spanish teacher visits all classrooms, Preschool and up, for Spanish immersion lessons using a fun mix of songs, games, and storytelling. Each month, we have a Spanish theme (as close to the class theme as possible) that adds new games and vocabulary weekly.

Computer Lab

(Young Preschool, Preschool, Pre-K, Kindergarten, After School)

Our young preschoolers and up will visit the computer lab each day.

The computer lab is filled with educational programs and games to keep your child stimulated while exploring technology. They will learn basic computer skills while practicing number recognition, letter sounds, and science concepts, just to name a few.

Library

(Young Preschool, Preschool, Pre K, Kindergarten, After School)

Our young preschoolers and up visit the library each day.

The library is divided into sections based on the themes throughout the year. In the library, teachers read books to their classrooms and let the children explore books on their own. We also have a listening center in our library where a group of children can listen to a book while they practice how to turn pages and care for books. We have a selection of award-winning books as well as popular children’s literature from The New York Times bestsellers list.

Gymnasium

(All-Ages)

We actually have two gyms at Abacus. Because different age groups have different needs in a physical play space, we have one for the big children and another for our smaller friends.

Young preschoolers through kindergarteners take part in physical education in our large gym. There, the gym teacher leads classes in a wide range of developmentally appropriate activities that strengthen gross motor skills and improve agility. Our infants and toddlers use their gym daily to develop gross motor skills and stability. The infant gym is filled with soft play climbers and tunnels. They can practice pulling up, climbing, and crawling. We believe that physical education instills a stronger sense of self-worth in children. They become more confident, assertive, independent and self-controlled through the mastery of skills and concepts in physical activity.

Dancing after meditation: what high-level self-management looks like

    Lifestyle Blog

Natalia Dmitrieva, an experienced top manager and founder of the premium dance and yoga club High Level, talks about how managing your own body helps you not to burn out at work.

Natalia Dmitrieva has twenty-five years of successful career in marketing and advertising. She founded the GN Interpartners group of companies, which in 2008 became part of the EMCG holding, one of the largest players in the Russian advertising communications market. Having become a co-owner of EMCG, Dmitrieva took over the management of the marketing aspects of the activities of the holding’s agencies. And in 2020, she opened a dance and yoga club in Moscow City, located on the 75th floor of the Oko Tower – hence the name High Level. Its concept is built on the postulate: “Caring for yourself, discipline of mind and body is the key to a high-level life.”

— You have been working in the advertising business for so many years in senior positions, and suddenly salsa, tango, yoga in hammocks… other major brands. Although most of the time I really devote to the club. Once I had a difficult deal, and I felt it was time to switch and throw out emotions. Tango lessons were ideal for this. But it turned out to be hard to find a studio that would meet all my needs. Convenient location, great teacher, premium level of the club, no hustle and bustle in the locker rooms – such a puzzle did not add up. In the end, I just made a bet on the teacher. But the idea that Moscow lacks the right, beautiful place for business people, where there is no need to compromise, did not let me go. And I decided to create my own.

— And they chose a space with panoramic windows on one of the last floors of a skyscraper. Do your clients get dizzy?
— It’s not just about the prestigious location. I made the decision to open a club at a high altitude after talking with reputable yoga instructors. According to them, today’s fashionable grounding is only possible, in fact, on the ground or on the grass. And classes at height, in their opinion, correctly affect the vestibular apparatus, and the atmosphere is completely different – you seem to soar above the city and the bustle. By the way, our most popular yoga areas are Air Yoga and Antigravity, which rise even higher because they are held in special hammocks.

— Is it true that the residents of Moscow City have a special respect for your morning meditations?
— Indeed, businessmen from neighboring offices willingly come to the morning sessions. They say they spend their working day calmer afterwards.

We present the concept of Slow Life, which implies a conscious approach to life. Learn to slow down, feel the joy of the moment and enjoy it.

We often get calls from personal assistants looking for a place for their boss to feel relaxed and comfortable and “not yell at anyone in the office afterwards.” We cope with such tasks.

By the way, in addition to morning meditations, we also have gong meditations at night, which last from 11 pm to 6 am. The only thing required here is sleep. After all, thanks to sound vibrations, the body works by itself. For all the time we have not had a single indifferent review. The guests say that for the first time in a long time they get enough sleep and cheerfully take on things that they have been putting off for a long time. For some, it is enough to come once a month, for someone – once every six months.

— More than 15 dance directions are offered on your website. How do you differ from other studios, except for the number of styles?
— First of all, we should be proud of our teachers. So, classical ballet is taught by Bolshoi Theater soloist Alexander Voytyuk. And ballroom dancing, latin, salsa and bachata – the owner of the Russian Cup Kirill Goncharov. Of the unusual directions, I would note the oldest and technically complex Indian dance Odissi, which teaches body language. Men, and of various nationalities, fell in love with lezginka.

– With such a busy schedule, how do you manage to keep the chamber format, without the hustle and bustle in the locker rooms?
— We focus on individual lessons (which we can also conduct on the client’s premises) or on mini-groups of three to five people. It was important for me to create a club so that business people feel at home in it and, if they wish, do not intersect with anyone. And for those who, on the contrary, need more communication with like-minded people, we hold various events.
