Average pay for nannies: How much do nannies make? Updated rates for 2022.
How much do nannies make? Updated rates for 2022.
Paying for childcare is a big expense for families and the right compensation package can often be the determining factor in securing an experienced, dedicated caregiver. One of the most common questions parents ask us — and one of the biggest factors in a family’s decision to hire a nanny — is how much to pay a nanny, the person who spends their day with a parent’s most precious treasure: their child.
Parent forums and playground acquaintances can give a general sense of going rates in the neighborhood. But for families just starting out on the nanny-hiring journey, it can feel overwhelming to know what the right rate is: an amount that works for the family, and for the nanny.
How much do nannies make in 2022?
At a nanny agency like Smart Sitting, we like to think in terms of income for the sitter or nanny: How much should you pay a nanny who can deliver above-and-beyond childcare, peace of mind for parents, plus bring dedication and professionalism to their role?
Rather than being a number for an hourly rate, it often comes down to a weekly minimum income or a compensation package where rate is one aspect.
In 2022, nannies are making:
-
Part-time weekly minimums anywhere from $400-750/week gross for a consistent position on a regular schedule, plus applicable part-time benefits; or $30-35/hour
-
Full-time weekly minimums of at least $1200/week gross with benefits; or $30-35/hour
-
Hourly rates via backup care agencies for non-regular positions may be anywhere between $15-$35/hour, with quite a bit of variation. $25/hour is about average.
These are nanny rates for metropolitan areas and may look different depending on where you live. Benefits often include paid time off, sick leave, health care stipends, public transit stipends or fully paid monthly cards. Learn how to add nanny benefits to attract top childcare talent.
How are nanny rates calculated in 2022?
It comes as no surprise that the same factors that have affected the price of many things in your life affect nanny rates as well. The global pandemic threw the nanny industry into upheaval. A large number of nannies were let go when families could not keep them during the months of isolation. Other nannies took great risks and altered their lifestyles to keep families with small children and elder relatives safe as they continued to work in person.
As the pandemic wore on, many families grappled with a “nanny shortage,” after child caregivers had moved on to other careers or left metropolitan areas entirely. All these factors have made nannies highly sought after, and a higher compensation has often been the way to secure top candidates. The pandemic also shone a light on the precarity of the nanny profession, where many nannies work without health care benefits or in off-the-books jobs that don’t enable them to get unemployment benefits if their jobs disappear.
In 2022, nannies are also managing the same increased expenses you are — with inflation and rising gas prices requiring higher incomes. All this combines to make average rates higher than they were previously, especially for high-end, experienced nannies. On average, we are seeing about $5-10/hour increases, and that positions comes with more comprehensive compensation packages now than they did in previous years. Different positions also see different rate ranges, with part-time, temporary, and travel positions at a higher average than full-time positions.
Factors that always affect nanny rates
There are many factors that affect how much nannies make around the US. A few key factors are:
Location may dictate the widest range in pay rates, as nannies in large cities like New York or LA typically see higher rates than caregivers in smaller towns or the middle of the country. Washington state is another region where rates have been the highest nationally, contrasted to Ohio where nannies have the lowest average hourly rate.
When parents wonder how much nannies make, it’s usually with the hope of getting one clean number after which the deal is done. However, that is rarely the case. Often, it’s a combination of the type of role families are looking to fill, what it requires from the sitter or nanny in terms of previous experience and skills, and what the general market is like, both in their particular area and nationally. Add all these factors together and you end up with the ideal range rate for a position.
Overwhelmed? Don’t be—we are always here to help!
We’ll work through your needs and match you with a suitable income range for your ideal nanny. Just reach out to us today and we’ll help you find the caregiver that is right for your family.

In Kazakhstan, the most expensive nannies work in Almaty
The average salary of nannies in Almaty is 70,000, Tengrinews. kz reports.
According to representatives of domestic recruitment agencies, the average salary of a nanny in Almaty ranges from 60,000 to 80,000 tenge. However, earnings can reach 120-150 thousand tenge. Payment for babysitting services depends on several factors: education, experience, work schedule. Live-in nannies receive more than those who are with the child only during working hours.
As noted by the head of the Almaty recruitment agency for the home, the age of nannies ranges from 18 to 56-57 years. Most often, women from 25 to 45 years old work. According to her, clients express their wishes regarding age, experience and so on. There are cases when, after a few days of work, the family refuses the services of a nanny. The interlocutor said that this is a normal phenomenon – after all, even with experience and good recommendations, the nanny may not find a common language with the child.
Nannies who do not work through agencies, but on their own, indicate the desired salary in the ads below. The cost of services per month in this case is 30-60 thousand tenge.
In Astana, prices are about the same. According to a representative of one of the recruitment agencies, the average salary of a nanny is 60,000 tenge. In general, the cost of services per month varies from 40 to 100 thousand tenge. If you hire a nanny not through agencies, then you can find a person who will work for 30 thousand a month. You can also agree on a daily payment – 1.5 thousand tenge per day.
The salaries of nannies in the regions are somewhat lower. According to Semey’s recruitment agency, a day of babysitting services costs 1.5 thousand tenge. Thus, for 20 days of work from 09.00 to 18.00 you can get 30 thousand tenge. For half-day work, nannies are paid 1,000 tenge.
In Petropavlovsk, they get even less for half a working day – 700 tenge, for an hour of work – 200 tenge. Babysitting services in Uralsk will cost 1.5 thousand tenge per day. In private ads, there is also a salary of 20 thousand tenge per month. In Shymkent, they are ready to offer 1000 tenge per day for babysitting services.
It is worth noting that the ads often indicate wishes for candidates. Someone needs relatively young nannies – no older than 35; someone, on the contrary, prefers to work with older women aged 45-60 years. Employers may ask about nationality during a telephone conversation. Often they indicate in the ad that they need a “Russian non-smoking nanny”, a woman of Slavic nationality or a Kazakh.

How much do nannies earn in Germany?
Parents of small children often want to have a free evening and, for example, go to the cinema or a restaurant together. To do this, they need a person who will look after the child at this time. If grandparents are not around, you have to hire a nanny.
Advertising
Finding a really good nanny is often difficult. Basically, it depends on the salary, which, in turn, depends on many factors. For example:
- In cities, the opportunities for earning money are always higher than in rural areas;
- Equally important is the nanny’s pedagogical education;
- for little money, babysitting services are often provided by teenagers;
- payment for babysitting services also depends on the time of day at which you need to look after the child;
- also takes into account the activity of the nanny. For example, if you need to look after a child who sleeps peacefully in a crib, the participation of the nanny will be minimal, which means that she will earn less; nine0004
- If a nanny not only looks after, but also prepares food for one or more children, and also puts them to bed, her payment for her services is often above average.
How much does a nanny earn?
Babysitting fees are free of charge and are always subject to negotiation. Although hourly wages start at €5, depending on experience, they can be as high as €20. On the Internet, nannies often offer their services for hourly rates ranging from €10 to €20. Babysitters who have reached the age of majority are entitled to the minimum wage (€9,19 per hour).
For teenagers, minors as young as 13 can provide babysitting services with a written agreement from their parents. But only for a maximum of two hours a day from 8:00 to 18:00. Those who are 15 years of age or older can babysit until 20:00. However, school and education should always be a priority for them.
Agencies demand high commissions
If there is no suitable nanny in the circle of relatives and friends, you can contact the agencies. They offer nannies, grandmothers or professional nannies for daily care. Agencies can also provide a temporary replacement if the permanent nanny falls ill.
