Many of us have acquaintances or relatives abroad, and when they come home, they tell how people live there, abroad, how much their way of life differs from ours.
As it turned out, people from Glusk, who settled abroad, can be used to study geography, because Glusk residents live in the USA, the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy and many other countries. We thought that such “live”, one might say, documentary stories, would be of interest to our readers as well. This is how the project Zagranichnye Zametki appeared.
In 2013, Irina Trubach (maiden name Klezovich) and her husband won a green card (green card) and a year later they left for North Carolina – one of the so-called South Atlantic states of the USA. For almost three years they have been living in Asheville, a town located in the heart of the mountain range that is part of the Appalachian mountain system. We chatted with Irina on Skype, and she shared her impressions of Asheville and its inhabitants. Here is her story.
— I’ll make a reservation right off the bat: everything I’m talking about concerns Asheville, where life, I’m sure, is different from New York, Los Angeles and other American cities.
Asheville is such a real, patriarchal, America. Here in the city itself, in the center, there are 80 thousand people, and with all the surrounding districts – somewhere around 200 thousand. This is a white town, 84 percent of the population is white.
American cities are organized quite differently from ours (and I like ours anyway). In Belarus, a city is a city, and a village is a village. And Asheville, like many other local cities, is a city-village, that is, in the center there is a bunch of high-rise buildings, the so-called downtown (downtown – the central part of the city, where the main business facilities of the city are located: offices, banks, theaters and other entertainment facilities etc. – Ed.), and 70-80 percent is the private sector and some other attached small towns. All major events take place in downtown, shops and the private sector are scattered over a large area. A lot of people live not in apartments, but in houses.
When we arrived here, my husband went to work as a truck driver for a Ukrainian trucking company and learned the language at the same time.
I also went to language courses for several months, and then I got a job in the same company in the office, worked there for almost two years, then went to study.
In general, I am a livestock specialist by education, I graduated from the academy in Gorki and worked as a junior researcher at the Agricultural Research Institute in Zhodino, in the laboratory for breeding and selection of beef cattle. Upon arrival in Asheville, the question arose of where to move professionally.
Higher education obtained in Belarus can be evaluated here by sending documents to special authorities. It costs about 150 to 350 dollars. (Evaluation is a confirmation of a foreign diploma, bringing it into line with the system of assessments and subjects adopted in America. – Approx. ed.). But I didn’t do it, there was no point, since I originally planned to work in another area. There are no collective farms here. Farmers – they don’t care about your education. Veterinary – somehow I could not imagine myself in this area.
Therefore, I decided to retrain, because I simply did not see where to move as a livestock specialist here, and chose medicine.
While working in the office, I noticed that many colleagues are trying to learn. The fact is that there is a very strong division depending on whether you have an education or not. There is work for everyone, but it is low-paid, and for people with education, wages increase significantly.
College
I went to college to study medical laboratory technologies and in the future I will be able to work in a laboratory where they take blood, do tests, there is a blood bank. Their laboratories are a bit different from ours, they do everything on computers, although, of course, they also have microscopes and other necessary equipment. I need to study for two years.
By the way, if a person does not have a higher education, the state pays for college, if you already have one, it is considered that you get the second one for yourself, so it is paid.
The system of education is very different from ours. You can go to college at any time. You can start with the spring session, you can start with the autumn session, you can start with the summer session (there is also a summer semester and a summer session). For example, I started my studies in January. When you are ready for admission, you take placement, this is a test that includes mathematics, English and essay. I rented it for seven hours, although you can divide it into parts and rent it separately. Based on the final scores, you are determined to the level of English. The most interesting thing is that Native Americans also learn English, including because the English language in North Carolina is very different from the official English, it is not even always understood by Americans from other states.
The college has general subjects, there are specialized subjects, and until you study general subjects, you don’t go further into specialization. But you can study general subjects for as long as your possibilities and your desire allow you.
For example, a person works or has a family, children, besides, you need to buy textbooks – he can take only one subject. It turns out that you determine the pace of your studies yourself.
Here everything is adapted for a person to try and learn. There is an adviser, that is, a curator who helps to determine the schedule, academic disciplines. I took three classes: anatomy, which is one of the hardest subjects that Americans often give up, English, and a class on how to succeed. You yourself choose the time when it is convenient for you to study (for example, in the morning or in the evening), select the schedule and then start studying.
After studying general subjects, in order to get into the specialization, you need to pass an exam, very serious, very difficult. This is a test, it is on time, it takes a little more than a minute for each question. The test for passing to the medical program (I passed it in May) included mathematics, English, and also science (science) is physics, chemistry and anatomy together.
It was difficult, but I passed the competition, and on August 14, I started classes.
Let me give you an example of how our group (groups in the college were small, we had 15 people) had anatomy classes. We had, as expected, lectures and practical exercises. For a lecture, the teacher prepares a presentation on the topic, tells and shows dummies, samples. In practical classes, we looked at tissue sections, cells through a microscope. What is most interesting: in four months of studying anatomy, we had 58 exams-tests. For a week we handed them over two, or even three. The topic passed – the test, the next one passed – again the test. Moreover, all the results are summarized, and at the end of the academic year, the total score is calculated. If you want to graduate well – be kind, pass all the tests well. In this case, it is required that the result is not lower than a certain level, otherwise the subject is considered not handed over. That is, the system, when a student can work half-heartedly in a semester, and then push it before the session, will not work here.
In English, we wrote essays, three per semester, and one was based on a poem, and, to be honest, I was shocked when I heard that I would have to write an essay in English based on some poem. But what to do – she wrote, and the teacher helped a lot, explained everything to us in detail, literally chewed.
There is very little oral English in the college, all assignments are written. On the one hand, it is convenient, especially for visitors, because many of our people read well and understand what it is about, but it is difficult for them to explain themselves in English. On the other hand, the college practically does not provide language practice, and this is bad.
Kindergarten and school
Our daughter is an adult, so, as here with kindergartens and schools, we know from the words of friends. Kindergartens are mostly expensive, but there are also cheaper ones. It all depends on your income, if it is small, the state goes forward, gives benefits, even seems to have some kind of free kindergartens.
There are kindergartens where you can leave the child for a few hours, for example, while the mother is in college. But in general, preschool educational institutions are still expensive, we have friends who live near New York, and so they pay somewhere around $ 1,000. Of course, this is a kindergarten in which children are diversified, they are shown a lot, they are explained, doctors come to them, they are taken to swimming pools, on excursions, they are taught to read and write …
As for the school, the children of the newcomers quickly get used to it and are generally satisfied. At first, there are difficulties with the language, because all subjects must be learned in English. Therefore, for those who do not have English as their native language, special English lessons are organized, where they are helped to learn it faster. I know a lot of guys who can’t wait for the holidays to go back to school. Americans do not load schoolchildren, I don’t even know if this is a plus or a minus.
If you wish, you can study subjects at an advanced level. I know that many people find it hard to study later in college, because there is too much difference from school, where everything is relaxed, where there is little homework. Therefore, it is not uncommon to go to college and then drop out. By the way, many people also drop out of school and go to work. For me it was strange and even wild, but the thing is that even without education here you can easily get a job for 9-$10 an hour. This is considered little, but nevertheless …
