Cascade Appletree- my daughter attended for two years, full days 5 days a week. This was the most wonderful experience! I cannot even begin to express my appreciation of the teachers and staff. My daughter learned so many amazing things and it truly helped ease her into kindergarten. I will be sending my next children there.

One of the best gardens

March 2016 • With friends

Was in March – and the weather was unlucky, but it was raining, so I had to look at the Japanese garden under an umbrella, There is an indoor garden where butterflies are regularly released – to the delight of adults and children. Various musical evenings are held. The garden is also famous for its combination of plants and all sorts of modern sculptures

Very beautiful garden

dec. 2014 • With friends

We were in winter when there was an exhibition of Christmas trees from all over the world. We had a wonderful tour, we examined the city in miniature, made from natural materials. It was cold enough to walk along the street, but I’m sure it’s wonderful there in summer

VERY INTERESTING many hidden TREASURES 2017 • For two

My wife and I went to the Frederic Meyers Gardens 8-1-17. It was well worth the trip. Lots of great exhibits. Japanese Garden, Michigan Farm, Tropical Room and sculptures to name a few. We decided to take the first 11: oo tram around the side of the sculpture. it cost an extra $4 per person. It was very hot so we got through in about 3 hours but you can spend as much time as you want. I would recommend it as a half day or full day trip if you are ever in Grand Rapids. There is a fee included and an additional fee for Tram and food. There was no parking fee. There is a children’s section with water features interesting facts. The only thing we didn’t like was going through the Zen of the Japanese Garden, feeling all we could hear was screaming kids from a group of kids. Another that it was good and we had a good time. nine0003

Wonderful tram ride

July 2017 • Family vacation

We have 3 young kids and not much time so we took the tram. Volunteer guide was very attentive and humorous to relax. Then we took the kids to the wonderful lake garden and they had a great time to play with the water. After that, we wanted them to see Dale Chihuly’s blown glass at the Cafe. The gardens and sculptures were very cheerful. It’s worth the time and I know my grandchildren will remember this park. nine0003

I can’t say enough about this place. Beautiful, well maintained and designed gardens that are pure pleasure to walk through and enjoy. Contemporary figures are in abundance, and the outdoor amphitheater provides musical programming. Great for kids. The people of Grand Rapids should be proud of this treasure. nine0003

Spectacular – I can’t say enough for it

July 2017 • For two

My friend and I heard Mayer Gardens was a must-visit in Grand Rapids when we arrived at the conference. They greatly exceeded our expectations! With a huge amount of territory and a large selection of gardens, experience. I really enjoyed the kindergarten and my favorite part of the entire park is their water – a playground with pools shaped like magnificent lakes surrounded by topographic maps of the area. My friend’s favorite thing in the garden is the incredible amount of sculpture art. He loves art, I really liked the gardens, it’s a great combination. I was happy to find there was an exhibition of Aya Weiwei’s work on the gardens. I have since learned that this is the first Weiwei garden exhibition ever. It was missing some of my favorite works by this Chinese discordant artist, but still an amazing display overall. nine0003

We needed more time!

July 2017

I had three hours and couldn’t get close to doing my due. I had time for about 3/4 from the street but didn’t manage to look at any conservatories. I got a veggie roll from a well-deserved outlet cafe. But what I saw was wonderful. Took the tram, which is a must do. Thanks Barb for a great story on the sculptures. And many other nice volunteers. Being there in midsummer meant the flowers were at their peak, including the wildflower meadow, which is always a favorite. Don’t miss the “pavement” route where you are suddenly transported from English gardens to wetland for excellent bird watching. I’m already planning to come back next year. This time I would allow the whole leisurely day and see everything. nine0003

American craft cider makers follow in the footsteps of brewers . Keith Berno talks about how American craft cider is following in the footsteps of beer on the DRAFT portal.

nine0003

A waitress in neon leggings jumps up to a table where boys and girls in their early twenties are seated on benches. They are wearing pom-pom hats and flannel shirts. Glasses of varying degrees of emptiness, with drinks of different colors, are crowded on a table made of bleached wood. The guitarist takes orders for covers of songs by John Mayer and Carlos Santana. Couples around the table debating where to go next Saturday – White Dog Brewing or happy hour at the Ale Works?

It looks like a brewery taproom, but it’s a Lockhorn Hard Cider in Bozeman, Montana, and no one drinks beer here – everyone has cider in their glasses, Cascade hopped, aged in bourbon barrels, with a dash of ginger… The cider house opened in a rebuilt garage in 2014. A few years ago, the taprooms of the cider houses were not so “beer”. But brewing—both taprooms and cider in general—is not slowing down. nine0003

• • •

Classic cider houses can still be seen in Oregon, Washington, and the Finger Lakes region of New York State. The country’s most “wine-oriented” cider makers work there. They, unlike those who buy apple juice or even concentrate, cherish their family gardens and cultivate the best varieties of apples inherited from their ancestors. If you call them cider makers (not cider makers, but cider brewers), they wince: their work is closer to winemaking than to brewing, and ciders are better to drink from a wine glass, not a beer glass. nine0003

But if you call Nat West the brewer, he is unlikely to correct you. West is a friendly cider evangelist, founder of Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider in Portland, Oregon, and the informal face of the emerging tradition of making and selling cider as craft beer rather than wine in the future will be produced, packaged, shipped, sold and consumed like beer, not like wine, Nat concludes

Reverend Nat ferments nearly all of its ciders with brewer’s yeast. They also make apricot cider, hopped Cascade, a sour cherry cider that’s more like lambic than apple juice, and bourbon barrel-aged cider. Sounds familiar, right, beer lovers?

Other cider makers (but certainly not all) follow in his footsteps; you’ve probably seen hopped ciders, ciders in 470ml cans, and seasonal draft ciders that sit next to IPAs and Kölsch on the beer list? It’s no coincidence: today’s beer drinkers are critical to the growth of cider, and craft cider will become more and more like craft beer in the coming months and years. nine0003

But first craft must figure out where it fits in the general cider market. According to Nielsen, in 2014 the cider market showed growth by 68%, in 2015 it slowed down to 8%. But here we need to make a footnote: if we single out the six largest players in the cider market (Boston Beer Company, MillerCoors, AB InBev, C&C Group, Heineken and W.M. Magner, Inc.), it turns out that the craft cider segment (minus the “big six”) in 2015 showed an increase of 44.4%.

According to Bryant Goulding, co-founder of Rhinegeist Brewery and its cidermaking arm Cidergeist, the overall slowdown is not a problem. nine0003

— We are pleased with the growth of the craft segment in cider, it’s like the beer market 10 years ago.

• • •

Michigan’s Vander Mill is a story of success in the growing craft wave. They started selling cider in 2008, introducing dry ciders in a variety of flavors (all from Michigan apples, some processed locally) to craft beer lovers. 470 ml cans of Vander Mill are now sold in stores, supermarkets and bars throughout the Midwest. The cider house recently opened a 4,000-square-foot facility in Grand Rapids with a 250-seat restaurant with 20 taps, of which 19busy with ciders, and only one with beer.

– In our other restaurant, we met people who saw the taps and asked: where is the beer? says Vander Mill co-founder Paul Vander Heide.

It was only five years ago that Vander Heide stepped out of his Lake Michigan corner and began to conquer the Chicago market. Started with kegs, then added cans, targeting the best beer bars in the city, Bangers & Lace, Sheffields and Fountainhead. Paul handled the distribution himself, driving kegs in his minivan and offering them to beer drinkers as a dry and tasty alternative to mass-produced cider. nine0003

Paul was confident that craft beer drinkers who wanted to drink local, quality and tasty drinks (whether made from grain or fruit) would drink his cider. Indeed, in Grand Rapids, Chicago, where craft beer has long been drunk, consumers quickly fell in love with the different styles of cider.

• • •

Some craft cider makers grew out of breweries: Rhinegeist’s Cidergeist line, Begyle Brewing’s Broken Nose Cider brand, Short’s Brewing’s Starcut Ciders, Two Beers Brewing’s Seattle Cider. nine0003

“We share a tasting room, so when we opened the cider house there was already an audience,” says Caitlin Braam, president of Two Beers Brewing and Seattle Cider, which launched in 2013, six years after the brewery was founded. — There are employees who work both at the brewery and at the cider house, they have a common sales department, but different workshops. Beer making and cider making are very different, but we’re seeing beer styles making their way into the cider house as well.

Take fresh Seattle Cider Gose, for example: a limited edition in which the dry and slightly tart cider is complemented by the light saltiness of gose, the most popular style of beer today. nine0003

— Today, there are practically no people who drink only beer. In our taproom, people take tasting sets, where beer and cider are divided in half, Caitlin continues. “We have an equal number of guys and girls coming to us, both beer lovers and cider lovers. When hopheads want to try cider, the bartenders suggest Seattle Cider Citrus, IPA-style dry and tart. Our visitors can experiment with crafting in general and find out what’s new in this world.

Bryant Goulding recalls that when Rhinegeist launched the Cidergeist line in October 2015, they aimed to offer beer drinkers semi-dry and hopped ciders available in 470ml cans and on tap

– I think craft beer drinkers are potential cider drinkers if they don’t already drink it. We want to introduce our product to tastemakers who love beer, cider and food, who just love quality drinks. We need to earn the reputation and respect of beer drinkers. For those who drink beer and can distinguish Mosaic from Citra, our cider will make their eyes pop out of their foreheads, Goulding is sure.

• • •

Until now, craft cider makers have been warmly welcomed in the craft beer world, but it was only dates, not marriage. Nat ‘Reverend Nat’ West accepts the challenge. nine0003

— I see the current situation as an opportunity. Every time a craft beer lover goes to the store, he should remember me and want to buy my product, instead of being distracted by a hundred different things. This is a fair fight. Our merits stand behind us, not advertising and discounts. I just want my very unusual ciders to be tasted by anyone.

Hopped, barrel-aged ciders with unusual flavors are created not only to appeal to beer lovers looking for something new, but also out of sheer necessity. Most start-up cider houses don’t have quality apples at their disposal – it takes time, land and experience to grow an orchard. Instead, many cider makers use the juice from table apples and change the flavor by adding other fruits, adding hops, acidifying it, and thus creating a more complex product. And Americans – lovers of fruit beer are happy to drink such ciders. nine0003

– If you have apples without much taste, you think: what to add? How do you make delicious cider? Our best selling ciders are hopped or flavored. There is a growing culture of cider making in the USA, but American table apples are used, and we do not hide it. But we have probably the best table apples,” continues West.

This is where American craft cider makers can make a name for themselves, as American craft brewers used to do, innovating, telling stories, and today becoming world leaders in an industry that used to be considered exclusively European. Instead of copying Normandy farmhouse ciders or tart, effervescent Basque ciders, American cider should forge its own path using craft beer as a role model.
