Amazon has developed and implemented a system for automated performance evaluation of delivery drivers using “smart” cameras. The neural network that manages these cameras determines the earnings of each driver and his “safety rating”, which affects the employee’s career prospects. Each Amazon delivery vehicle is equipped with four Netradyne cameras – one of them is located under the interior rear-view mirror and is aimed directly at the driver. The cameras capture activities such as running a red traffic light, ignoring a stop sign, speeding and violating the distance between cars.

The cameras also read the “body language” and facial expressions of the driver, and can issue audible warnings for yawns, glances at the phone, “unwanted conversations” and other signs of “decreased attention”. Some drivers saw this as an unacceptable level of intrusion on privacy and quit Amazon.

For each violation, the neural network reduces the driver’s safety rating by adding one penalty point, except for driving through a red light and ignoring the stop sign! – for this the driver immediately receives 10 penalty points. At the end of the working week, the system sends out evaluation sheets for each driver to managers. For a good safety rating, the driver receives bonuses, for a low one, the driver is fired.

The system is not working perfectly and may interpret the vibration of the smartphone on the front panel due to rough roads as a call during business hours. Another issue is the increased requirements — where Amazon originally set an average safety rating of 550, it now stands at 700.
