  • Amazon is hiring for more than 3,300 advertising jobs.
  • Most are in performance marketing, but there are a growing number of TV ad roles.
  • Insider reviewed public salary data from 2020 to 2021 to see how much the roles pay.

Amazon continues to grow its advertising ambitions to rival Google’s and Facebook’s dominance — as evidenced by the ballooning number of advertising roles the e-commerce giant is looking to fill.

Amazon’s career website lists more than 3,300 advertising jobs across 11 different teams with the most open positions in software development; sales, advertising, and account management; and technical product management. While hiring trends fluctuate depending on the time of year and company, this figure is up significantly from last year, when Amazon’s career website listed 800 advertising positions.

Performance advertising makes up the bulk of Amazon’s ad business, but the recruitment efforts show Amazon’s growing ambitions to go after TV ad budgets, where marketers tend to favor soft metrics like brand awareness. Twenty-six percent of the openings for Amazon’s advertising roles are for performance advertising, 17% are part of the multichannel advertising team, and 2% are for its ad-supported streaming service IMDb TV.

Amazon does not share salary information publicly. To find out how much employees make, Insider matched federally disclosed data on Amazon’s 2020 and 2021 H-1B visa holders of jobs including marketing, sales, and account management. The data includes salaries from Q4 2020 through Q4 2021. While the data solely includes salaries from foreign workers in the US, it gives job seekers an idea of salary expectations. short guide to employment abroad

    Tips

    Quick guide to current topic

    Why look for work abroad
Types of companies and areas of work
Specifics of job search in different countries
    How to prepare documents correctly
    How to negotiate salary
What about work visas for marketers

Hi, I’m Eka Vankova, UK content marketer and career consultant at EP Advisory. We at the company regularly help Russian-speaking specialists to get qualified jobs in Europe.

I’ll tell you where to look for vacancies for a marketer abroad, how to properly prepare a resume and other important documents, as well as how to negotiate a favorable salary and working conditions.

Why look for a job abroad

Be mobile. You will be able to live without a visa in EU countries for up to three months a year and travel almost all over the world without visas.

Earn more. The work of marketers in Europe is paid more than in Russia. For example, the salary of a Junior PR Manager in the UK can be two to three times higher than in Russia.

Buy a home at a low interest rate. For example, in France it is 1-4% per annum.

Expand horizons. Living in another country gives you the opportunity to get to know the world and yourself better. At the same time, if you want to return home, foreign work experience will help you find a job faster.

Types of companies and areas of work

Marketers are now needed by everyone: from tiny start-ups to large corporations. Where to get a job depends on experience and qualifications.

Startups. Main characteristics: limited budget, lack of clear plans, diversification of responsibilities. The easiest way to get into startups is for generalist marketers who know how to do a little bit of everything. PPC-specialists and performance-marketers are also in demand – with a limited budget, money is primarily allocated for contextual and targeted advertising.

Corporations. In corporations, narrow specialization is highly valued, so it will be easier for marketers with experience in a particular direction to get a job here. Here, specialists are expected to have case studies, the ability to work with large budgets, develop a strategy and analyze the results.

Industries. Employers are also looking for Growth Marketing Managers who are analytics-savvy. The third popular specialty is e-commerce marketing managers.

It’s also worth considering LinkedIn’s statistics on the fastest growing industries. On the example of the UK:

    • E-commerce (demand for specialists increased by 143%).
    • Finance (+82%).
    • Internet marketing, including Digital PR (+52%).
    • IT & SaaS (+45%).
    • Education (+53%).

In other European countries, the picture is similar in terms of demanded industries.

Job search specifics in different countries

Job search in Europe has its own characteristics compared to the CIS countries. Among the main differences, I would single out:

    • LinkedIn as one of the main platforms for posting vacancies.
    • Interviews place a lot of emphasis on soft skills.
    • The need for excellent English proficiency: it is spoken by a lot of people in Europe, so you will not surprise anyone with the level of Upper-Intermediate.
    • Conducting “behavioral” interviews, during which they check how the specialist performed in various professional situations. Sample question: “Give an example of a task that you had to work on under a very tight deadline.”
    • Strong referral system – it’s much easier to get an invitation to an interview if you were recommended by an existing employee of the company.
    • Desire to hire an employee with similar corporate values.
    • Great attention to data literacy – the ability to analyze data and make informed decisions is in great demand, especially among marketers.

Also, each European country has its own cultural characteristics of job search. I will briefly highlight the most important countries.

France. Three main points can be distinguished here:

    1. Search for a job on the basis of a diploma. The discrepancy in education and the position of interest is acceptable only for specialists with 10+ years of experience.
    2. Resumes should be written in French. Even if you don’t know him very well, ask a friend or French teacher to check your mistakes. This is really important for French employers.
    3. Don’t ask questions about salary in the early stages of an interview. Here it is so unacceptable that you can simply be blacklisted as applicants. Wait for the final stage, or rather, the corresponding question from the hiring manager.

Denmark. In the country, the market for qualified specialists is so competitive that it takes a lot of effort to stand out from other candidates. This can be done in two ways:

    1. Maximum adaptation of the resume to the vacancy – with literal copying of the wording from the vacancy. (Yes, something similar to working with the semantic core.)
    2. To be remembered for something unusual. For example, a personal history associated with a brand, or an unusual hobby.

UAE. The most common way to find a job in the Emirates is through recruitment agencies. For example, through Global Vision, Work Emirates, Perun, Jetexpo. In the UAE, it is easy to get an internship with a further transfer to a permanent contract, namely in the restaurant and hotel industry. Main requirements: under 30 years of age and fluency in English. The most demanded specialties today, in addition to marketers: IT specialists, doctors, teachers, builders, experienced sales managers, financiers, HR specialists.

Germany. German employers especially appreciate the ability to work in a team, resolve conflicts, think structurally. Hiring managers from this country are not very interested in how sociable you are – for example, whether you like to go to a bar with colleagues after work. But if you show your desire to develop and grow, as well as project management skills, then you will definitely be remembered.

UK. Networking is very important when looking for a job in the UK. Getting into a company on the recommendation is much more real than just responding to a vacancy. You also need to be proactive, for example, send resumes to companies of interest, even if they do not have open vacancies. And at the interview stage, it is important to show your leadership qualities and soft skills.

    How to prepare documents correctly

    Resume

A good resume is designed as simply as possible: one soft font, simple structure, minimum creativity (except for representatives of creative professions).

A classic resume in English consists of the following blocks: Name, Profile, Education, Experience, Skills & Other. You can separate them with a bar:

    Let’s go through each section:

Profile. This section provides an overview of you as a specialist. It is important to keep it short (4-5 sentences) and compelling. Numbers in this section are welcome.

Experience. Here you need to reflect your work experience in reverse chronological order. That is, first the last position held is prescribed, and then the previous one. Each position is disclosed in the format: position + responsibilities + achievements.

Education. In this section, you need to specify the specialization and university, city, country, dates of admission and graduation. Young applicants may also mention a school or college.

Skills & Other. This section usually indicates knowledge of foreign languages, unusual hobbies, volunteer experience, sports achievements, educational certificates.

The most important thing to remember is that a recruiter spends 3-5 seconds looking at a resume. Therefore, the fact that you are suitable for the role should be read almost instantly.

    Cover letter

The purpose of a cover letter is to provide additional information about yourself and show that you are a better fit for the role than the other candidate.

To do this, select 3-4 key requirements from the job description and describe how you can apply them to your current position.

It is important to remember that your competencies are already listed in the resume. In the cover letter in English, you need to provide additional information. For example:

In my two years as a Technical Director, I have learned to work under pressure in a team environment where close cooperation with colleagues is essential to get the job done on time.

Then we can mention a few little-known facts about the company. This will show that you are not limited to superficial research and are actually motivated to work here.

End your cover letter with a call to action. No uncertain “I hope you’ll get in touch” – show that you do not doubt yourself. Good phrases would be “Please don’t hesitate to call me on…” or “I am available for interview next week…”.

    LinkedIn

Now let’s figure out how to correctly fill out sections on LinkedIn:

Headline. When a recruiter is looking for candidates, he sees only the Headline, name and photo in the search results – so this is an important section. Here you should put a short text with keywords that the recruiter enters to search for such specialists. In total, 120 characters are placed in the Headline, I recommend using them to the maximum – this way you will appear higher in the search results.

About. This section provides an overview of you as a specialist. Here you need to indicate who you worked for and what you can do.

Experience. Use industry-standard job titles. It’s not scary if the position in your company was called differently, this is normally perceived. Don’t forget to write down your responsibilities and accomplishments.

Consider the profile of Elizaveta Proselkova, founder of EP Advisory:

Skills & Endorsements. It is important that the top three Skills are the most relevant to the position you are interested in. To find out what those skills are, take a look at current job openings on LinkedIn and see what employers are waiting for. You can also add knowledge of languages to this section.

    How to negotiate your salary

It’s important to remember that not only employers make their choices, but so do you. You should like not only the position, but also the salary. Only in this case you will be able to work comfortably without the need to change the company and visa in the near future.

European employers are generally open to such negotiations – the first salary offer is often not final. The desire and ability to defend your interests will only strengthen your position in the new company. And the first salary negotiations will be the basis for all further discussions of working conditions.

    How to bargain?

If you are asked about salary in the early stages of selection, try to give a range of numbers – for example, from £60,000 per year to £65,000. It is important to name the amount more than the one that suits you.

The employer most often names the salary and specific social package when he already makes an offer. Feel free to bargain, because the company has already invested a lot of effort and time, which means it is open to dialogue.

If you don’t like the amount stated, don’t show your frustration – just say, “I appreciate your offer.” You can take a few days to consider the offer, then contact the employer and name the amount you would like to receive. Motivate your number with market research and the value you can bring to the company.

Another way is to send an e-mail something like this: “I am very interested in your offer, but after thinking, I decided to ask if there is anything else that can be done in terms of wages?” As a rule, for such a letter, candidates receive a counter offer or additional bonuses, additions to the social package.

What about work visas for marketers

An urgent question is whether work visas are issued to marketers from Russia today. Yes, European companies are still doing it, the visa process has not changed in any way.

There is also no prejudice against Russian candidates. On the contrary, they try to get into position. And first of all, they look at the benefits for the company, and not at the country of origin. There is a lot of evidence for this. For example, the German association of the digital industry Bitkom called for hiring IT specialists from Russia and Belarus.

In 2022, our clients received visas to top companies (Bloomberg, Zalando, Danone, Booking, Revolut, Amazon, Google, L’Oreal) in various countries (UK, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Denmark, Poland). And these are just a few examples. So, if you want to get work experience abroad, the visa issue should not confuse you. If you have a dream – go for it.
