Group and School Age Child Care programs provide early education and care for young children in a community-based setting outside the home. Learn more about these programs and find a licensed provider near you.

Group and School Age Child Care programs provide early education and care for young children in a community-based setting outside the home. There are two sizes of licensed Group and School Age Child Care programs: small programs that can enroll up to 10 children, and large programs that can enroll over 10 children. Group and School Age Child Care programs may be licensed to serve infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and/or school age children, and may include before/after school and summer programs.

What is Group and School Age Child Care?

Group and School Age Child Care includes several types of early education and care programs, such as preschools, kindergarten, before/after school programs, and summer programs. Group and School Age Child Care programs are licensed by the Department of Early Education and Care (EEC).

These programs are located in facilities in the community, including school buildings. There are two license types, Small and Large. A Small Group and School Age Child Care license is for up to 10 children, while the Large Group and School Age Child Care license can certify a program to care for 11+ children.

EEC Group and School Age Child Care licensing does not include any part of a public school system.

Program licensing

EEC is dedicated to helping all children build a strong foundation for healthy and productive lives. To get an EEC license, the program has to meet health, safety, supervision, and training standards, including:

  • Programs must provide a healthy and safe environment, and offer activities that help your child develop and grow.
  • Administrators and educators must be First Aid and CPR certified.
  • Administrators and educators must be trained in child development and curriculum implementation.
  • Programs must keep appropriate ratios of educators to children.
  • Programs must complete EEC’s Background Record Check requirements.

Find a provider

If you are looking for a licensed early education and care program for your child, you can find one online using our search tool. EEC created a geographic search tool to help you find licensed child care programs.

Some licensed programs choose to not be listed in the search tool. If a program that you are looking for doesn’t appear in your search results, you can call your local EEC office to confirm whether the program is licensed. EEC can provide information about a program’s license history including non-compliance findings, and any current restrictions on a license.

PockeTurtle: K-2 Coding and Computational Thinking — Fall After School Course

Designed by Stanford Artificial Intelligence professor David Zhu, PockeTurtle is a novel Computational Thinking curriculum that is currently being implemented rapidly at 1000s of elementary schools in Korea and China. Oak Knoll is one of the first and only schools to offer this curriculum in the US! The course, “PockeTurtle: K-2 Coding and Computational Thinking”, designed by Hatch Learning, is taught to K-2 kids by Stanford Computer Science students. The curriculum, based around a small turtle-like robot and carefully designed colorful tools and booklets, teaches children to fully visualize problems and solutions by merging their thoughts with the physical environment. They then test their reasoning by ‘teaching’, or programming, their turtle robot to solve the task at hand. This class is unique in that it brings programming away from computer screens and onto student’s desks, making for a much more natural and collaborative Computer Science learning experience for K-2 kids.

“PockeTurtle: K-2 Coding and Computational Thinking” will be taught once per week for 10 weeks as an after-school course at Oak Knoll. The class will be comprised of no more than 12 K-2 students and 2 teachers. The class is filling quickly so make sure to register as soon as possible in Homeroom.

K-2 Coding and Computational Thinking Remote Course

Hatch Learning, a Stanford-based education institute is offering a remote version of their popular after-school course PockeTurtle Level 1 which teaches K-2 students the fundamentals of coding and computational thinking using an interactive web-app curriculum in which students ‘teach’, or program, a digital turtle robot to overcome obstacles. Students leave with a solid foundation in computer programming and a problem-solving skill set that will change how they think and solve problems in all subjects. More specifically, they will practice the four steps of computational thinking: decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithm design. To reduce students’ sitting time, the class integrates physical standing activities.

Innovative Edition of the Birth to School Program

MOZAIKA-SINTEZ Publishing House presented at the All-Russian Forum “Childhood Landmarks 2. 0″ an innovative edition of the program “FROM BIRTH TO SCHOOL”, according to which more than 70% of kindergartens in Russia work. Elfiya Minimullovna Dorofeeva, General Director of the Russian publishing house “MOZAIKA-SINTEZ”, spoke about the unique opportunities that the Innovative Edition of the Program opens up for teachers and educators.

The program “FROM BIRTH TO SCHOOL” is provided with the most complete educational and methodological package in all areas of a child’s development. About 80% of kindergartens in Russia operate under this program. The team of authors is constantly working to improve the Program, including the creation of sections dedicated to working with gifted children and children of different age groups. The educational and methodical set includes teaching aids, visual and didactic aids, workbooks for children, disks.

This truly innovative reissue of the program “FROM BIRTH TO SCHOOL” is based on the program “Education and Education in Kindergarten” recommended by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, released in 2004, edited by M. A. Vasilyeva, V.V. Gerbova, T.S. Komarova. 15 years have passed and a lot of work has been done. The newest edition of the Program retains all the advantages of the first edition and takes into account the latest achievements in science and practice of domestic and foreign preschool education. The program is provided with an educational and methodical set (EMC), which is constantly updated and supplemented. At the same time, everything previously published for the Program certainly retains its relevance.

The program “FROM BIRTH TO SCHOOL” presents the main components of the optimal organization of the educational process. The fifth (innovative) edition basically retains the goals, objectives and content of educational work (what we teach). However, there are also changes related primarily to educational technologies (how we teach). The need for innovation is due to the fact that a lot has changed: the time is different, the society is different and the children are different. So teachers need to change.

It is important that the innovations offered in the fifth edition of the Program do not require a drastic overhaul. Innovations can be introduced gradually, to the extent that educators and the kindergarten as a whole are ready for. There are also no restrictions on the time of introduction of innovations – you can start changes from any age group and even not necessarily from the beginning of the school year. It should be noted that the innovative edition does not negate or replace the previous versions of the Program, but supplements and expands them. Therefore, all previously published manuals are still needed.

The main innovations of the fifth edition of the Program:

  • Changes have been made to the daily routine, allowing more time for free games and independent activities of children, project and event activities, additional classes, etc.
  • New elements of the daily routine have been introduced: morning and evening circle.
  • The concept of an educational result has been adopted, where the development of abilities, the education of value ideas and the development of knowledge, skills and abilities are harmoniously combined.
  • New educational technologies are being introduced: a space for children’s realization, an educational event, a morning and evening circle that develops a dialogue, a technology of positive socialization, “peers” – a technology for creating a children’s community, and others.
  • A transition is being made to a new format of child-adult interaction based on the ability to “hear the voice of a child” and aimed at developing children’s initiative.
  • A new format of holidays is proposed, based on children’s interests and children’s initiative.
  • The principles of organizing a developing subject-spatial environment, aimed at independent children’s activities and the opportunity to find an occupation for each child, are spelled out in detail.
  • A significant part of the mastering of subject content (knowledge, skills) takes place not in the format of frontal and subgroup classes, but in new forms, such as a morning circle, project activities, educational events, enriched games for children in activity centers, etc.
  • A new format of interaction with parents is proposed, when parents and educators are not “customer” and “performer”, but colleagues and partners who have a common task – raising a child, while the educator, as a professional, takes an expert position, and the parent listens to the opinion educator and assist him to the best of his ability.
  • Creation of the PDD (space for children’s realization) as the main tool for the development of the child’s personality. For all the proposed innovations, methodological manuals have been published or are being prepared, but this does not mean that the existing manuals are no longer needed – classical class notes will always be in demand.

The fifth (innovative) edition of the Program “FROM BIRTH TO SCHOOL” opens up new opportunities for children, parents and educators and at the same time can be successfully implemented in a mass kindergarten without attracting additional funding. The main idea of the fifth edition is the optimal combination of classical preschool education and modern educational technologies. The main innovation of the fifth edition is the focus on creating a space for children’s realization – support for creativity, initiative, development of the child’s personality, creation of conditions for self-realization. The innovative option may seem, at first glance, more complex and difficult to implement, but in practice it is ultimately more convenient and interesting for everyone – children, parents, educators, and administration.

THE PROGRAM WAS FIRST INTRODUCED
TO THE EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITY
AT THE CHILDHOOD GUIDELINES 2.0 FORUM
