Should I go back to school?

Articles archive She rented an apartment in Long Beach, California, a stone’s throw from the coast. She had a corporate car, and in the evening she often went to dinner in restaurants. Now 28, she walks and rents a room away from the sea along with other people. nine0016
Date decided to rethink some aspects of her financial situation after she enrolled in a full-time MBA program at the University of Southern California. To do this, she had to leave her job at the American headquarters of Toyota Motor Corp., where she had worked for the past five years. Although her job in the retail industry as a manager was quite decent, Date decided to go into marketing, and studying for an MBA program is the perfect fit for such a career change. nine0003
“It wasn’t easy to make that decision,” says Date, who has an MBA and is currently looking for a job. After collecting information on the cost of studying at top business schools, she decided to change her lifestyle to cut costs. She used the funds she managed to save during her time at Toyota. And yet, upon graduation, her loan debt amounted to about $ 45,000.
For young people, the decision to enroll in full-time business school is very important. It often carries with it a significant loan debt after graduation. The main question that applicants ask themselves is: “Wouldn’t it be more profitable in the long run to spend these two years gaining additional work experience?” nine0003
Graduate education should be “part of a bigger plan,” says Liz Wands, director of marketing at New York-based undergraduate preparation firm Princeton Review. Don’t rush into school just because you’re disillusioned with your current job or the state of the economy scares you, she advises.
Education and salary level
The average salary level of full-time employees in US companies is over 25 years old. nine0016
According to the College Board, 2003
Costs and Benefits
The cost of a professional degree depends on many factors. According to the Princeton Review, when looking for a quality business school education, you need to be prepared to spend between $70,000 and $90,000. The cost of a master’s degree in law is even higher – from $70,000 to $120,000.
To determine how attractive an MBA degree is for you from an economic point of view, try to find out all the possibilities for available financial support. nine0003
If you have to take out a loan, it’s a good idea to make sure your monthly payments after graduation don’t exceed 8% of your income, says Erik Olson, editor of Paying for Graduate School Without Going Broke).
Some Western websites offer their visitors special calculators for calculating educational loans (www.finaid.org/calculators). And business publications offer ratings of the highest paid professions based on data from Dow Jones & Co. (www.careerjournal.com/salaryhiring). nine0003
For example, a law school graduate whose post-graduation salary may exceed $100,000 a year is eligible for more credit than a master’s in social work or teaching.
For those looking to pursue a career in lower-paying jobs, consider part-time studies, Olson advises. Studying in the evening and on weekends makes it possible to combine classes with work. Moreover, employers often offer their employees partial reimbursement of training costs. Increasing education also entitles you to additional tax credits. nine0003
For example, Prachi Date of Toyota started part-time through the company’s cost-reimbursement program, but later leaned towards the full-time option because it involves developing a network of business contacts. In her opinion, their benefits in the long run outweigh the additional costs and leaving work. “I was sure that this way I could achieve a greater return on my investment,” says Date.
Research fellowships and grants
Many applicants for master’s and doctoral degrees receive financial support from their institutions.
When Chrissa Carlson decided to get a master’s degree in environmental science, her income dropped by 30%. She received $16,000 a year from her university as a postgraduate scholarship. This was $8,000 less than her earnings while working as a high school teacher. But teaching environmental protection at a higher level required a master’s degree, so she had to go back to study. At first, she had to save literally on everything. But now Carlson has received a $30,000 grant from the National Research Foundation that will cover all of her expenses. nine0003
Research grants and other academic grants are important for more than just coping with extra costs in the short term. They can serve as proof to future employers that your scientific work can attract investment, says Olson.
When planning your admission, find out about all the scholarship and grant opportunities available to graduate students at this school. A list of postgraduate scholarships is available on the Council of Graduate Schools website (www.cgsnet.org/ResourcesForStudents/index.htm) and on the Cornell University Graduate School website (http://cuinfo.cornell.edu/Student/GRFN). nine0003
Final Decision
If, after considering the financial aspects, you are willing to accept the resulting costs, consider whether you really should take your postgraduate degree now.
Take your time if you’re unsure about your chosen research area, for example, recommends Wontz of the Princeton Review. “This is the first sign that you are looking for a sense of relative stability in your studies. You must clearly understand the scope of your interests,” she says. nine0003
It is for this reason that Gregory Levow put his PhD studies on hold for a while. Levov graduated from college in 2004 with a degree in business. During his studies, he was very nervous due to the weak activity in the labor market and therefore he was going to continue his studies in order to get a master’s degree in economics or health care. “I was looking for something that would help me find a job,” he says.
But later he realized that he did not have enough reasons to enter the master’s program. In addition, everything indicated that the economy was gaining momentum. Having made a choice in favor of work, he managed to find a position as a marketing assistant in one of the Silicon Valley companies. And he postponed his plans to enter a business school for several years ahead. nine0003
For Date, by contrast, going to business school played a major role in her move from retail to marketing. The inevitable reduction in day-to-day costs also had its upsides. “I realized that I can do without many things that I used to spend a lot of money on,” she says.

Cameron Diaz: “After forty, I finally learned to live to the fullest”

Annie – Annie
“You know, musicals don’t come up very often in a career. I was terrified, but I felt that I simply had to take it on,” says 42-year-old Cameron Diaz about her role in the new musical comedy “Annie”, where she plays the headmistress of a children’s boarding school. “Most of all I am afraid of two things in life: heights and singing in public,” Diaz admits. – I jumped out of an airplane, flew off a steep cliff – I tried, if not to get rid of my fears, then at least to look them in the face. And now I had a chance to deal with another of my phobias – the fear of singing in public. You know, I cried non-stop! Naturally, she looked extremely pitiful, but everyone around me supported and joked. Probably the only way to somehow cope with fears is to treat them with humor!” Cameron was right – she eventually succeeded. Here is what she says about her character Agatha Hannigan: “This musical is a remake of a film made in the 80s, starring Carol Burnet. Then women were more worried about one thing: to find a man as soon as possible. My heroine does not want to work, but at the same time she dreams of being famous – she is convinced that this is the key to happiness. I tweaked this image a bit because the only thing that makes us happy in life is the love you give and receive.” nine0003
Breakfast
We have breakfast at the Maritime Hotel in New York, but Cameron is late. She finally appears in a white V-neck James Perse tee, Frame jeans with holes at the knees, and nude Rag & Bone leather sandals. “Breakfast is my favorite meal,” she exhales with a guilty smile. – I love to eat properly in the morning: grilled meat, pasta, vegetables, oatmeal. The main thing is to add eggs, without them breakfast is not breakfast.”
Cuba
Cameron Diaz is a Cuban American. Her great-grandfather rolled cigars in Aibor City, Florida, her late father, Emilio Diaz, worked for an oil company in San Diego, and her mother, Billy Joan Early, was a broker. Cameron, the youngest in the family (she has an older sister), went to school in Long Beach, California. “I hated school,” she admits. “My parents didn’t have money for college, and I didn’t get a scholarship. Therefore, at one time I gladly jumped at the chance to work as a model. It promised travel and at least some money – all I needed. nine0003
Empty – Nonsense
“I don’t like selfies – this is complete nonsense. I love live communication – even with those whom I do not know. I will always stop and chat with a person who wants to get to know me. I’ll ask my name, I’ll say thank you for your interest in my person. Whatever the circumstances, I will never pass by.”
Fear
“Between my twenties and thirties, I was afraid of many things, I was always fussy, I was a perfectionist. After thirty it passed – I finally accepted the fact that I can not control everything in life. And now I tell my friends all the time that after forty everything is just beginning. I finally learned to live to the fullest. There was a self-confidence that comes only with experience. Now I’m just living, not rehearsing life.” nine0003
God
Cameron Diaz’s father was an atheist, his mother was also not religious. But when her daughter was seven years old, they began to take her to church – every week a new one. “Thanks to my father, I grew up with the feeling that I can believe in anything – as long as it helps me. And I came to understand that a higher power exists. I have a very close relationship with God. Faith is a huge part of my life.”
Hair Gel
Comedy episode “There’s Something About Mary”98), where the heroine mistakenly puts the sperm of the hero Ben Stiller on her bangs, once and for all entered the history of cinema. It was a great start – Cameron Diaz could easily become the queen of rom-com. But she chose a more complex and eclectic path, from arthouse (Being John Malkovich) to thrillers (Vanilla Sky) and drama (Gangs of New York). “I will never act just for the sake of money – it is important for me that it is really interesting. And I will not engage in self-promotion, just to remind myself. So you can quickly get bored with everyone. ” nine0003
Inattention
“I remember when I was in the first grade, the teachers complained to my parents that I was chronically unable to concentrate, that my thoughts were always somewhere far away, although I studied decently. It’s really hard for me to focus and sit still for a long time. I was even diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder. But it seems to me that all these diagnoses are terribly outdated and mean nothing. For example, I was simply not interested in studying while sitting in one place. And there was always a need for movement, communication with the world and a constant exchange of information. It is important for me to hear what is happening behind my back and what is happening around the corner. And you need to be able to switch – start one thing, take on something else, and then, perhaps, return to the first thing. But this is not an attention deficit at all – I hate it when labels are hung. nine0003
Jobs
“My parents helped me gain confidence in myself because they always gave me freedom. They told me this: “No one is responsible for you, except for yourself. Therefore, be attentive, think what you are doing, be aware of your words and deeds.” They also said that if for some reason I did not get a job, it was not because something was wrong with me, but because it was simply not for me. And what is truly yours will not leave you. And ethics is very, very important. Even if you just clean the streets, you are responsible for your work, and no one should redo it for you.” nine0003
Kids
“We live in a society where it is customary to have children – everyone expects you to do so. Celebrities, according to these conventions, should also give birth to children, because they are also people and should be like everyone else. But I’m not going to do anything just because it’s accepted in society. If it turns out that I will have a family, then perhaps children will also appear. If I’m destined to be a mom, fine, but I won’t force it just to meet someone’s expectations.”
Long Beach, California
Cameron Diaz grew up in Long Beach, California. She had a very turbulent youth (she claims that, while skipping classes, she regularly bought weed from a young Snoop Dogg). But she does not regret anything – on the contrary. “Long Beach is a special place, a little crazy. The street was my main university. Parents worked all the time, and after school we stuck out on the street until night and, of course, periodically got into stories. But they quickly learned to solve problems themselves. nine0003
Marriage
“I’m not looking for a husband and I’m not looking to get married for show, but I’m not running from it either,” says Cameron, who has been dating 35-year-old Benji Madden, guitarist for the Madden Brothers (their introduced actress Nicole Richie, who is married to Benji’s twin brother Joel Madden). “I just live my life and don’t give much thought to what I SHOULD do with my life and what not.”
Nourishment
“When I was 21, I lived in Paris, smoked two packs of cigarettes a day, and gorged myself on the caviar and foie gras I bought at duty-free. And I ate it all with an incredible amount of french fries and croque madam. I then went to auditions every day, but my modeling career did not go because of terrible skin problems. In the end, Diaz pulled herself together, went on a diet, cured her acne, and at 19In 1994, she flew to Los Angeles to audition for the comedy The Mask with the then little-known Jim Carrey. This role opened her way to the cinema. “I never really dreamed of becoming an actress,” Cameron admits. – I liked the tests. We laughed so hard we almost broke our stomachs. But I didn’t even think that I would eventually be given the role. ”
Orgasm
In the thriller The Counselor (2013), the heroine Diaz, the female predator of Malkin, brings herself to orgasm on the windshield of a Ferrari. At the sight of this, her boyfriend – played by Javier Bardem – falls into a trance, believing that all this is a hallucination. “I don’t know if a woman can orgasm like that, but my character apparently can,” Cameron laughs. “She does things like that to get into his head, to take possession of him without a trace. This scene is not so much about sex, but about how to get unlimited power over a man. nine0003
Pubic Hair
Cameron Diaz’s 2013 bestseller The Body Book is a fascinatingly written study of diet, fitness and self-care. Most of all (this was vigorously discussed in the pages of The New York Times and The Guardian) was made by a chapter called “Praising Pubic Hair”. The actress stands up for the rights of a generation traumatized by Brazilian hair removal. “And what is a very important topic,” she shrugs. “The women here need to be given the floor.” nine0003
Quirk – Strange Habits
“I love playing with my hair, winding my hair in all possible ways – on my index finger, on my thumb, on two, three fingers, on all fingers … I do this automatically all my life – especially when I think about something. And when a girl with long hair is next to me, I play with her hair. By the way, my close friend Drew Barrymore also winds her hair endlessly. On the set of Charlie’s Angels, both of us could not tear ourselves away from Lucy Liu’s curls – they are long, stunningly beautiful. nine0003
Regret
“I don’t live with regrets. I don’t do selfishness. I don’t like to look back and torture myself with thoughts that I should have done something differently. Of course, you need to draw conclusions and learn from mistakes, but if you constantly regret the past, then you do not accept yourself and your current life.
Sports
“The sports I enjoy – surfing, golf, snowboarding – are more individual. I like to compete only with myself from time to time, because filming a movie is a solid game in a team. nine0003
Toenail – Toenail
In 2002, on the set of Gangs of New York, Diaz was impressed by her co-star, actor Daniel Day-Lewis, primarily with her attitude to work, her ability to get used to in image and drive. “I could never play like Daniel. Even if I came out of my skin, everything that I am capable of in the movies is not even worth the nail of his little finger.
Universe
“I trust the universe completely. Everything good and bad is the wise plan of the universe. There are lessons to be learned from this.” nine0003
Vacation
“This year I decided to take a break and not film. In 2013, I had three films – more than enough. I love filming, but you also have to live sometime! But I work all the time anyway,” Diaz says. Outside of cinema, she is an ambassador for the TAG Heuer watch brand and creative director of Pour La Victoire (an accessories company) – Cameron participated in the launch of their new collection of bags and shoes.
Worry
“I never worried about my career. I try to go with the flow, fulfill my obligations and do my job with the highest quality.”
Xrated
“The audience saw my buttocks, from all vantage points – from below, from above… I have not shown myself completely naked yet, but in general I have nothing against it – if the role requires it. I have no taboo in this sense.
