Particular attention in grades 1-4 is given to working with vocabulary words. Vocabulary words by topic, exception words that do not obey the rules of spelling.
Vocabulary words must be memorized. What’s wrong with that? But in reality it is not so easy. Memorization is a complex thought process.
How to memorize vocabulary words
To help your child, use all the ways:
- Memorize:
- visually (graphic image, spelling), underline the letter to be remembered
- by ear (repeat the dictionary word aloud and syllable by syllable, highlighting with your voice the place where the word is not spelled as it is heard)
- figuratively (draw a picture)
- Classify and organize vocabulary words
- spelling: o city, in o robe, in o ron, m o l o ko – we write O
- accent: window, milk, sieve, coat
- by topic: from about rock, in about ron, in about timid, tete e roar – birds; b e cut, c and rhen, top o l – trees
- Change words by case, i. e. write not only a dictionary word, but also phrases, sentences (go out with a dog, feed a dog, order a dog), select words with the same root (from about bachy, pres about bachit :), from about bakevich)
- The system is important: constantly return to the passed words, draw the child’s attention to them when reading fiction

Theoretical material for self-study
You know that the spelling of words in Russian is subject to certain rules. For example word mash and on we write through and , because there is a rule: “ Zhi-shi we write with the letter and ”. But the vowel in the root of the word – and cannot be checked. Words whose letters you cannot check using spelling rules are called dictionary words. Their spelling can only be checked with a spelling dictionary. How these words are written must be remembered.
There is a dictionary at the end of the textbook. It contains all vocabulary words for grade 4. Your task is to periodically repeat vocabulary words, memorize them. Dictionary dictations help in memorizing words. Practice writing vocabulary words!

I studied at school for a whole year –
I’m so tired, tired.
It’s time for me to go on vacation, cat, –
I want to rest a little.
The cat purred:
-Your vacation…

You need to buy a ticket here –
And you will travel the whole world.
If the luggage is a whole pood,
The porter is waiting, right there.
And everywhere – left, right

Don’t leave, don’t fly away
Speaking figuratively,
I can be happy.

Work on vocabulary words in elementary grades (from work experience)
Bibliographic description:
Chekalina, N. N. Work on vocabulary words in primary school (from work experience) / N. N. Chekalina. — Text: direct // School Pedagogy. – 2016. – No. 4 (7). — S. 60-64. — URL: https://moluch.ru/th/2/archive/42/1540/ (date of access: 09/23/2022).
In the Russian language, as you know, there are a lot of words with unstressed vowels that are not checked by stress, as well as words with unchecked consonants. The writing of such words is not related to pronunciation, does not rely on comparison and live sounding language, is not regulated by the application of rules. Consequently, the main way to master words with unverifiable spellings is to memorize their spelling and, in connection with this, select a system of exercises that will allow you to quickly master the spelling of such words in a short time.
Each elementary school program has its own list of vocabulary words. So, in the Criminal Procedure Code “School of Russia” V.P. Kanakina and V.G. Goretsky compiled a list of 100 vocabulary words (Grade 4). In the program “Perspective” the list consists of 55 words (editor – Klimanova L.F.), in the “Perspective Primary School” only 46 words are included in the list of vocabulary words for memorization (editor – Churakova N. A). The program “Primary School of the 21st Century” has a list of 90 words (compiled by Ivanov S.V., Evdokimova A.O. and Kuznetsova M.I.), in “Harmony” the authors of the list of vocabulary words Soloveychik M.S. and Kuzmenko N S. require students to memorize 73 new words. And the largest list of vocabulary words (grade 4) in the Planet of Knowledge program is 113 words (compiled by L. Zheltovskaya, O. B. Kalinina).
At each lesson of the Russian language, the teacher allocates time for the so-called “vocabulary” work. However, as control works show, this does not always give the desired results. The main reason for the poor mastery of words with unverifiable spellings by schoolchildren is, in my opinion, the incorrect construction of work with such words. There are a lot of “dictionary words” in Russian language textbooks, but they are all given in a scattered, unsystematic way. When studying in this way, the spelling of words does not remain in the memory of the students; when repeated, the child finds it difficult to remember which letter to write.
Years of experience has shown that despite the painstaking work of memorizing vocabulary words, students continue to make mistakes. The question arose many times how to achieve a good result in a short period of time, that is, with the least effort to teach memorizing dictionary words for a long time, firmly, thoroughly?
I came to the conclusion that all words should not be given separately, but in groups related by the meaning of words, or by topics, or by graphic similarity, contrast, or grammatical topics. And you need to study one group of words every day during the school week. During this time, work with words with unchecked spellings consists of the following components:
- Initial acquaintance with a group of words, their lexical meanings, identification of common features of these words.
- Exercises aimed at memorizing words.
- Checking the assimilation of the spelling of a group of words.
I will show an example of the study of one of the groups.
Learning words: FORTY, CROW, COW, SPARROW (Grade 1)
Day 1 (introduction to a group of words – demonstration of the spelling of words and their image on slides)
Teacher : Today we are starting to learn a new group of words with unchecked vowels. Let’s try to guess what these words are. The first word is encrypted in the form of a rebus: 40 A. (forty) Correct. The magpie is a bird of the crow family, with white feathers in its wings, emitting a characteristic cry – chirping. (slide with a picture of a magpie). forty received its name from the original word forty , which conveys the features of her singing. The magpie is called a chirper, a rattle. And who else can be called “forty”? (a person who talks a lot). How is this word spelled? (the written word is opened) What unchecked vowel should be remembered in this word? (first O) Read this word in chorus spelling, that is, by syllables, as it is written (SO-RO-KA). Write it down in your notebook, underline the unstressed vowel, put the stress.
Teacher : Now guess the riddle: The color is grayish.
Habit – thieving,
hoarse screamer,
Famous person.
Who is she? (crow)
It is a bird with black and gray plumage, related to the crow. (slide show of a crow). Crow and Crow are related to Crow “black”. The birds were named so for their black plumage. Crow is also called an absent-minded and inattentive person. How is this word spelled? (opens the word). What letter should be remembered? (first vowel O) Read the word spelling. Write it down in your notebook, underline the unchecked vowel, put the stress.
Teacher : Listen to the text and say who it is. “Pestruha is standing on a green meadow, chewing and chewing grass. Pestruha’s horns are steep, the sides are thick and the udder is full of milk. She waves her tail: flies and horseflies drive away. Eat, eat, Pestrukha, it will taste better – your milk will be sweeter. A milkmaid will come to milk you – she will milk a full bucket of delicious, sweet milk. (According to E. Charushina) “(cow) This is a large horned domestic animal that gives milk (a picture of a cow on the slide) Its name cow received by the presence of horns: from the Latin cor – “horn”, roots – “horned”. How is this word spelled? (word opens) What letter should be remembered? (first vowel O) Read the word spelling, write it down in a notebook, stress it, underline the unstressed vowel.
Teacher : And the last word – guess the riddle again:
Little boy in a gray coat
Snooping around the yards, picking up the crumbs,
He roams the fields, stealing hemp. (sparrow)
This is a small bird with brownish-gray plumage, usually living near residential buildings. (slide with a picture of a sparrow) Sparrow is named so for its chirping, from the onomatopoeic thief – “cooing, making iridescent sounds. ” How is this word spelled? (word opens) What letter should be remembered in this word? (unstressed vowel O) Read the word in chorus spelling, write it down in a notebook, underline the vowel and put the stress.
In grades 3-4, you can not open the finished word, but give the students the opportunity to express their own assumptions about the spelling of a particular word and only then open the finished word. And also students in grades 2-4 can independently try to give a lexical meaning to a word. After getting acquainted with the group of words being studied, the teacher can ask the following questions and tasks: “What unites these words into one group? (in this example, a combination of ORO) What word is “extra” here and why? What two groups can these words be classified into? (animate – inanimate objects, plants – animals, two-syllable – three-syllable, with emphasis on the first – second syllables, start with a vowel – a consonant letter, etc.) At home, students write down a new group of words in an individual “dictionary”, which children start during the period of literacy and lead it throughout the elementary school.
Day 2 (word memorization exercises).
The same group of words is written on the board, but with missing letters that require memorization.
with…roca
in…rona
k…rova
to…timid
Students remember the words they learned in the last lesson. Read each of them spelling and insert the desired vowel. Here it is also useful to conduct exercises in the selection of cognate words for the word being studied. It is useful to write them down in a column or ladder, so that those parts of the word that are spelled the same stand out more clearly:
This form of recording will help to better remember the spelling of the studied words. You can put questions to the selected single-root words and indicate which part of speech they belong to.
Exercises in composing phrases with these words are also of great benefit. The work on the phrase can be complicated as the program material is studied, combining it with a grammar task. For example, when studying the name of a noun, you can suggest compiling and writing down a phrase with the nouns being studied, using them in the instrumental or prepositional case, with or without a preposition, underline the endings, indicate the declension and case of these nouns.
Phrasing exercises will not only help to consolidate the spelling of words with unchecked spellings, but will also help students quickly highlight phrases in the text, which in turn will have a positive impact on children’s literacy.
At Day 3 the repetition of the studied words can be started by guessing anagrams.
On the board: aorkos
rnooav
rocoave
ivoreob
Students, rearranging the letters in the anagram, remember the “dictionary words”. Then the children make sentences with the studied words. The work can be carried out both orally and in writing, be collective and individual. The correct composition of sentences indicates students’ understanding of the meanings of words, teaches them to use them in speech. At home, students in grades 2–3, and students in grade 4 and in the lesson are given the task of compiling a story using the “vocabulary words” studied at this stage.
At Day 4 work with the group of words continues. Here you can already give suggestions under dictation with subsequent verification. For example:
“Sparrows, playful, like orphan children, nestled at the window. The sparrow chirped more cheerfully on the roof.
The crow croaked at the top of its throat. The crow pinched Druzhok by the tail.
Cow Burenka grazed in the meadow. It is very useful to drink cow’s milk.
Magpie loves everything bright and shiny. Magpie brings news.
At this stage, “vocabulary work” can be carried out in conjunction with work on the development of speech. For example, instead of sentences, remember and write down proverbs and sayings under dictation: “The cow is black, but her milk is white. Love sour cream, feed a cow.
Magpie chirps – prophesies guests.
The word is not a sparrow, it will fly out – you won’t catch it.
Burnt child dreads the fire”.
The teacher can introduce children to phraseological units and explain their meaning:
« Shooting sparrow – about a highly experienced person who is difficult to deceive, deceive;
White Crow – about someone who is very different from others, not like others;
Raven count – rotozeynichat, yawn;
Like a cow licked with her tongue – something quickly and disappeared without a trace;
Magpie on the tail brought – about news, information taken from nowhere, received;
Cracks like a magpie – speaks quickly, loudly.
In 5 day of studying a group of words, you can also give a variety of exercises to consolidate the spelling of words: write off the text, insert missing letters, guess the crossword puzzle, etc. Then the students’ knowledge is tested. As a check of the spelling of words with unverifiable spellings, both control copying and dictionary auditory dictations, picture dictations are used, which can be carried out for the purpose of the current check of the quality of assimilation of spellings of words, and for the purpose of control. In the latter case, they take the form of control dictionary dictations. In the lessons of consolidating the material covered, it is necessary to repeat the groups of words studied during this time.
The children really like the “fish” technique: the teacher, without pronouncing the words out loud, only with the help of articulation, “calls” the words, and the children must “recognize” the word by the lips of the teacher and write it down.
Such work is carried out every week and from the experience of work it can be argued that it brings its “fruits”: students make fewer and fewer mistakes when writing “vocabulary words”.
Each teacher can distribute the words at his own discretion, as he likes. Below are the words with unverifiable spellings provided by the program “Planet of Knowledge” according to the textbook “Russian Language” by L. Ya. Zheltovskaya, O. B. Kalinina, grade 3, divided into groups.
