For over 30 years, Wee Folk School has provided a nurturing, engaging, and fun educational environment for preschoolers.
Our aim is to build your child’s social and academic confidence by introducing and practicing age-appropriate skills through a balance of teacher-led and children-led activities. We are an approved preschool by the State of Maryland and take pride in our quality curriculum that fosters an early love of learning.
Over 30 years ago, Wee Folk School opened its doors to the Frederick community as a warm and welcoming environment where preschool children ages 2 to 5 learn, grow, and thrive. We believe that each child is special and continuously strive to ensure all of our students feel safe, accepted, and affirmed. We are an approved preschool by the State of Maryland and a ministry of Evangelical Lutheran Church where children of all religious backgrounds are welcome.
OUR MISSION
A preschool child is a creative, responsive, and intelligent little person. Our goal is to partner with parents to help children grow as much as possible at their own pace and develop a lifelong love of learning. We accomplish this through careful, loving guidance that begins with qualified teachers who are sensitive to the needs of each individual child. Our programs incorporate developmentally appropriate, hands-on activities into the day with an emphasis on social and emotional growth.

Home classes for the development of speech with a child 2-4 years old
We organize home classes for the development of speech
Many have heard the saying: “Any disease is easier to prevent than to cure. ” For our tasks, this idea fits perfectly. To prevent any speech disorder, mom can do a lot. Systematic homework will help us with this.
So, in order to develop your baby’s speech as best as possible and prepare him for school, you need to practice at least three times, and better – every day for 15-20 minutes. nine0005
Organize your baby’s workplace: a table for classes, a comfortable chair, a shelf with books and workbooks, a mirror. Classes should be liked by the child – this is a prerequisite. This is not so difficult to achieve.
First, choose a time for classes when the baby is full, slept, walked, feels good. Secondly, it fits into the daily routine and adheres to it every time. Thirdly, feel the mood of the baby. If the game seems boring to him, find a replacement for it, such that the goal is still achieved. nine0005
Don’t force a little student to study. Such exercises are ineffective. After all, in the end, they can be moved to the street, for a walk. Or spend them not at the table, but sitting on the carpet. Creativity, understanding and a kind attitude towards the baby and his problems – these are the qualities that any mother needs to learn.
How to develop the speech of a 2-4 year old baby
It’s no secret that two-three year olds are the most nimble and curious people. It is difficult for little fidgets to sit down for classes, to persuade them to do what they do not like. That is why this age is special: rapid development is difficult to organize and discipline. And you need to do it, because many kids have speech that is incomprehensible to others. Develops with a delay. Let’s try to offer the kid such games for the development of speech, from which it is simply impossible to break away. nine0005
All work on the development of the speech of children aged 2-3 years consists of 4 blocks:
– expanding the vocabulary and developing coherent speech;
– development of auditory attention;
– development of speech exhalation and articulation exercises.
– finger games.
Vocabulary expansion and coherent speech development
There is nothing more important for a 2-3 year old child than vocabulary enrichment and coherent speech development. The more time you devote to games, the easier it will be for him to study further, including at school. While expanding the vocabulary, we always follow two parallel paths: expanding the passive vocabulary and the active vocabulary. nine0005
The passive vocabulary is always larger than the active one, even in an adult. This is due to the fact that we do not use most of the concepts familiar to us in everyday life. Having once heard the word “synchrophasontron”, we, of course, remember it, but we are unlikely to ever use it in an active dictionary. However, passive vocabulary helps us understand the speech of others. And the richer he becomes, the higher the cultural level will be for a child or an adult.
Set up a puppet theater followed by a play with the characters. nine0035 Pull a sheet over the backs of 2 chairs, put the baby in front of you, and hide yourself behind such an impromptu screen. Show the performance “Gingerbread Man” with mitten puppets. After the show, let the baby touch all the dolls, put them on the handle. Ask to show whom the bun met first, whom he met later. Let the baby show in different voices, as the bear said, but as the hare, the fox. Do not forget about the song of the kolobok: you sing, and the baby claps his hands cheerfully and tries to sing along. A little later, try to tell and show this fairy tale to dad or grandmother together. nine0005
Toys in a bowl of beans are a wonderful educational material. Bury various small items in a large bowl of beans or lentils. The kid takes them out and calls them, puts them next to him. Then he shows the laid out toys at your request and performs tasks with them: “Put the fox near the bear”, “Hide the bead in the bag”, “First take the car, and then the ball”, “Put the ball in the truck, and put the doll on the chair”.
Small object games. Do not rush to put away the toys! The next game helps to develop the ability to keep the sequence of actions, to listen to the speech of another person. Ask the baby: “Give me toys in order, as I say: give me a car, a ball and a Christmas tree.” nine0005
Summarizing and classifying is a great way to expand your vocabulary. Put a lot of different fruits (or pictures with their images) in front of the baby. Ask to find and put aside only apples (different in color, size, variety). For older kids, we will complicate the task: “Spread the pictures into 2 piles. Fruits in one pile and vegetables in another. Or “Find among all the pictures only pieces of furniture (animals, birds, flowers, tools, etc.).”
Forming phrasal speech. nine0035 It happens that a baby at 2 or 3 years old stubbornly refuses to speak in sentences. There is a very good game reception for such children. Together with the baby, start making an album with photographs of the child himself: how he eats, walks, sleeps, etc. Looking at his own photographs (and, moreover, taking part in their production), the baby will learn to speak two-word phrases with great pleasure than in ordinary pictures. Looking at your album, ask questions and answer them yourself: “Look, what is Vanya doing? Vanya is sleeping. And here Vanya eats. When the baby learns to answer the question: “What is Vanya doing?”, You can make an album about mom and dad (“Dad is sitting”, “Dad is reading”). So the two-word phrase is ready! nine0005
Development of auditory attention
Games aimed at developing auditory attention help prepare the child for games for the development of phonemic hearing. Phonemic hearing is the ability to distinguish speech sounds by ear. For example, if you are asked to count the number of sounds in the word TABLE, you can easily say – 4. Phonemic hearing is responsible for this human ability. It is believed that thanks to the phonemic hearing of speech, it also masters reading and writing. nine0005
The game “What did it sound like?” with musical toys. Put 4-5 musical toys in front of the baby: glockenspiel, rattle, drum, pipe, bell. Let him play with them. Then ask him to turn away and play one of these instruments yourself. The kid should turn around and show (say) what sounded.
Game “What didn’t sound?”. If the previous game went well, make the task harder. The kid turns away, listens to how he wins on all instruments except one. Then it turns and determines what you have not played. nine0005
Development of speech exhalation and articulation exercises
While developing the child’s speech, let’s not forget to prepare the organs of articulation for the pure pronunciation of sounds. All speech sounds should be formed and pronounced by 4-5 years. If a baby 4-5 years old has a sound pronunciation disorder. Don’t try to install on your own. Such work should be done only by a specialist – a speech therapist. There are a lot of subtleties and nuances, without knowing which you can harm the baby and fix the wrong pronunciation. All preparatory exercises must be performed in front of a mirror so that the baby can control himself. You should do 3-4 times a week for 5-7 minutes. The main thing is that the kid likes these games, give pleasure. Particular care should be taken in breathing games so that the head does not spin, offer the baby only one game in class, control the time of the game. nine0005
Sponge games. Straw: show your baby how to stretch the sponges with a straw. The task of the crumbs is not only to repeat this exercise for you, but also to keep the “tube” smile for 5-6 seconds. “Smile”: learning to smile and hold a smile for 5-7 seconds. Then we alternate the exercises “Tube” and “Smile”.
Cheek games. Inflate the balloon: teach your baby to inflate and hold his cheeks.
Self massager. Ask your baby to bite the tongue with his teeth, and then the lips. nine0005
Breathing games. “Blow on the candle” : light the candle. It captivates the baby, doesn’t it? We will use this to form the maximum concentration on the lesson. The task of the baby is to blow out the candle with a sharp, short exhalation. If the baby is older than 3 years, then we will ask him to blow as quietly as possible so that the candle flame only deviates, but does not go out.
Snowflake game: Place pieces of white cotton on your palm. With a long, smooth exhalation, blow on them. “Snowflakes” should smoothly glide to the floor. The baby does the same with his palm. It can blow off the fleece at the same time – this will make a whole snowfall! Game “Ships”: fill a bowl with water and throw in table tennis balls. Task: blow on the “boats” – the balls so that they float where you need.
