Weekend in Salerno – La Tua Italia

Salerno, an ancient and noble city, once an ancient Roman colony, the first mention of which dates back to 194 BC, is located on a strip of land between the mountains of Monti Lattari and the bay of the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is generally accepted that it is in Salerno that the Amalfi Coast begins.

At the turn of the 7th-8th centuries, Salerno, which at that time was a city of wealthy merchants, was twice captured by the Lombards, in 646 and 759. The Salerno Principate was headed by Arechis II, who chose a massive castle as his residence, still towering over the ancient part of the city and the entire bay.

Salerno flourished during the Norman period, when the city became richer than Rome, and it was home to one of the most influential medical schools in Europe, based on centuries of experience in oriental medicine and the research of modern scientists, led by Matteo Silvatico.

The city grew, a cathedral dedicated to the Apostle Matthew was built and a new castle was built, which was named Terracena. During the period of theocracy, the barbarians and the ancient Romans began to mix, and the church nobility managed to concentrate gigantic land holdings in their hands. It was then that numerous monasteries and abbeys were built on them.

Today, Salerno, which separates the Amalfi and Chilente coasts, has become a favorite summer destination thanks to the long swimming season, mild climate, excellent cuisine and, of course, spectacular monuments of the past that have survived to this day.

Cathedral of San Matteo

Cathedral of San Matteo, dedicated to the Apostle Matthew and the Virgin Mary, was founded by Robert Guiscard and consecrated by Pope Gregory VII. It appeared on the site of an early Christian church, which in turn was built on the ruins of an ancient Roman temple. During construction, the relics of the holy apostle were discovered, which caused a significant increase in the temple. Over the centuries, the cathedral was rebuilt several times, especially strongly in the 17th century according to the project of architects from Naples.

The entrance to the cathedral is preceded by a spacious atrium, surrounded, in turn, by a portico on an arcade of 28 columns, decorated on the sides with several Romanesque sarcophagi. On the south side there is a high bell tower built in the 12th century; the entrance to the church is decorated with massive Byzantine bronze gates. In the central nave are the famous ambos of the end of the XII century, decorated with statues and mosaics. The Tesoro Chapel contains Gothic monstrances, including an ark with the hand of St. Matthew, as well as statues of the Great Martyrs of Salerno.

In the basement you will see a crypt with nine three-bay tiers and a groin vault resting on columns. In the 17th century, at the behest of Domenico Fontana, the crypt was reconstructed: a double altar of St. Matthew was installed, allowing two masses to be served simultaneously.

Diocesan Museum of Salerno

The Diocesan Museum of Salerno Cathedral houses priceless works of art from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.

Here is a unique collection of ivory tablets dating from the first half of the 12th century; an illuminated Exultet scroll (13th century) of eleven parchment pages with illustrations of the Easter proclamation; a large selection of tampers on a wooden base of the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries, including the “Crucifixion” by Roberto de Oderisio, belonging to the school of Giotto; several paintings by artists of the Caravaggio school, donated to the Cathedral of Salerno by the Marquis Giovanni Ruggi of Aragon in 1870. The most famous of them, Judith, is by Francesco Guarino.

In the bright corridors leading to the halls of the museum, there is a part of the collection of coins of Magna Graecia, the Ancient Roman Republic, the Roman Empire and the Mint of the Principality of Salerno. Particularly valuable is the coin minted under Gisulf II, known as the “Opulenta Salernum” (“Power of Salerno”).

Historic Center

The historic center of Salerno is literally dotted with small shops of artisans who create real masterpieces in them. It seems that artisans are not going to give way to numerous nightclubs. On the contrary, it seems that in Salerno these two realities coexist perfectly: during the day, the doors of shops and shops are open in the lanes, and in the evening bars, restaurants and clubs begin to work.

During the day, the center of Salerno is bustling with activity. On Via dei Mercanti, Via Duomo, Via Masuccio Salernitano, you can see with your own eyes the work of ceramists, woodcarvers, glassblowers, tanners, jewelers, blacksmiths, tailors.

Lungomare Trieste

Salerno’s promenade is considered one of the most beautiful in Italy. In fact, this pedestrian zone is a large garden 30 meters wide and one and a half kilometers long, leading from the city center along the sea to the tourist port. A new marina was recently built near the embankment, designed by the famous British architect Zaha Hadid, the finish of which is planned from local decorative majolica.

Arechis Castle

Arechis Castle, which to this day dominates the city and the sea, was built in the 7th century on the top of Mount Bonadies by the Lombard ruler Arechis II, who decided to move the capital of the Duchy of Benevento to Salerno. Arechis assessed Salerno’s strategic position from both military and commercial points of view.

The castle offers a magnificent panoramic view of the city and the Gulf of Salerno. Inside there is a museum where you can see medieval ceramics and coins, temporary exhibitions are held. There is a large hall suitable for congresses and conferences.

Teatro Verdi

Designed in 1863 by the architects Antonio d’Amora and Giuseppe Mancini, inspired by the size and proportions of the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. The Teatro Verdi opened on April 15, 1872 with the opera Rigoletto. The theater’s current artistic director is world-famous conductor Daniel Oren.

Minerva’s Garden

In the heart of the historic center of Salerno is the Minerva’s Garden, a fenced terrace between Villa Comunale and Arechis Castle. Minerva’s garden is closely associated with the name of Matteo Silvatico, a physician of the Salerno school and a connoisseur of medicinal plants, who founded the “Garden of Medicinal Herbs” at the beginning of the 14th century, which became the first European botanical garden.

The location of the garden above sea level, the system of pools and fountains for irrigation, exposure to north winds create ideal conditions for medicinal herbs that are grown here today. And the study of native plants served as the basis on which phytomedicine arose.

Artists of Light Street Illumination Festival

For ten years now, from November to February, Salerno has been adorned with light illumination. The festival is called “Artists of Light” and at this time bizarre light installations appear on its streets. Light paintings can be seen in the most beautiful and picturesque corners of the city.

Wine “Colli di Salerno” is made from the grapes of the hills of Salerno, a land famous for its history and habit of healthy food. It is the only local product to be awarded the IGP category of the European Union. This means that it can only be produced in a certain area with strict adherence to technology.
This fine wine goes well with local cuisine, emphasizing their taste and nutritional value. There are three types of this wine: white, red and rosé. The minimum alcohol content is 10% for white, 10.5% for rosé and red frizzante, and 11% for novello.
