Is Summer School a Good Option for Your Child?

The school year has drawn to a close and students hope for a change of pace over the next few months. For some, that includes classes or school-based activities during the summer recess. But is summer school the best option for a child who has ADHD?

Why plan on summer school?

Some parents enroll their child in summer school to prevent an academic slide during the summer months or to allow the child to retake a class they struggled with. Although it can be a good option, summer school is often considered a punishment to the student for failing to master academic skills. Sometimes teachers or parents threaten students with summer school if they don’t receive a certain grade or have trouble turning in assignments.

The experience of summer school doesn’t have to be a negative one. Summer school can help a child re-learn skills for better mastery. It can also be a strategic move to free up a student’s schedule during the academic year for other classes, including ones that may help them get into their preferred college. Summer school can also help with transitions, like when a student leaves elementary to enter middle school or goes from middle school to high school. Preparatory summer school can help kids who struggle with study skills, note-taking skills, or organization.

How do you know if summer school is right for your child? Here are some things to consider if you are thinking about signing your child up.

An individual approach

It’s a good idea to consider the unique needs of your child before enrolling them in summer classes, says Elaine Taylor-Klaus, CPCC, PCC, a coach and author of Parenting ADHD Now! Easy Intervention Strategies to Empower Kids with ADHD.

“As with anything with ADHD kiddos, it’s important to look at it on a case-by-case basis,” she says. Some children with ADHD find school stressful and may look forward to the summer months to relax and unwind.

“Kids with ADHD are often creative and don’t always have the opportunity during the school year to express that,” she adds.

Summer can be that time where a child can express themselves through less academic and more creative or artistic pursuits, such as an art or theater class. The long summer break can also provide opportunities for field-based activities like studying geology at a local nature center. Finding what your child is good at and enjoys doing can help you decide what activities you’d like them to participate in during the summer months.

“We have to balance summer school with what else these kids need for growth and development,” suggests Ms. Taylor-Klaus. “We need to play to what they are good at. The wins that come with summer balances the challenges that come with the school year.”

Getting buy-in

If your child is required to retake a class, let them know as soon as possible. If they are in high school, make them part of the conversation or decision process, advises Ms. Taylor-Klaus.

“Having buy-in from your child is important and can help reduce any feelings they have of being out of control in the process,” she says.

If there’s buy-in, your child will be more interested in summer school or a summer program. For some students with ADHD, the chance to retake courses can present an opportunity to hone their skills without the added stress of taking multiple classes with multiple teachers. It can offer an opportunity to focus more in-depth on specific content areas in a way not available during the academic year.

Tiffany D. Sanders, PhD, knows that most kids will not be excited about attending summer school. A licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist, she acknowledges that it may be challenging for parents to convince their child of the benefits of summer school. To help with this, she suggests that parents change the narrative.

“Make it fun,” says Dr. Sanders. “Treat it like they are going to school for the first time.”

Often summer school is held in a different school building than the one with which your child is familiar. She recommends setting up a tour if your child will be going to summer school in an unfamiliar setting. Allowing your child time to get to know their building or classroom will help alleviate their concerns.

Most summer school schedules differ from the academic year, so students may have Fridays off, or only attend classes two or three days of the week. Dr. Sanders suggests parents plan engaging and fun activities for the days off. Not only does this give your child something to look forward to, it can also help with their buy-in. Reminding your child that summer school is not like regular school and that they won’t be at school as long as a normal school day can also help if they are reluctant to attend.

Sometimes students are reluctant because their friends will not be at school. Having new and different people around can cause additional anxiety for some children. Parents can make sure they help their children gain skills they need to make new friends. Dr. Sanders recommends that you help your child develop some conversation starters or questions to ask when meeting people. This might help reduce their fears about making new friends.

Changing the language

Too often children view summer school as a punishment. Dr. Sanders believes parents can change that point of view. She recommends that parents introduce summer school in a way that shows its benefits. Talk about how the child will be getting ahead or will be well prepared going into the next school year, for example.

“Changing the language, in terms of positive language versus punishment for not making the grade, will help kids to enjoy summer school,” says Dr. Sanders.

Why do we need summer schools? | Chalk

40 years ago, the issue of summer holidays for children was not in principle. With the onset of summer holidays, happy pioneer guys, flashing red ties, took their seats in buses and headed to the pioneer camp. A couple of decades later, the pioneer camps became just summer camps, where parents were happy to send their children: “And in the fresh air, and fun, and find new friends.

” And then the era of educational camps began, where not so many children went at all, usually Olympiads, excellent students, in general, those who had high hopes for both parents and the school, and the country as a whole, went to such camps.

RazvitieCenter.ru teacher shares his experience of teaching at summer schools and tells why it is worth studying in the summer as well.

I was not lucky enough to go to an ordinary summer camp (by the way, I think that this is not so bad, after all, there are very few really good camps left). On the other hand, I visited several summer schools, which differed from each other in many ways, but the purpose of my stay there was always the same – not to forget what I had done at the gymnasium during the summer, to go ahead in the program, broaden my horizons and prepare for subject Olympiads.

I was always surprised by the statements about summer schools that I heard from classmates and their parents, all of them can be combined with one phrase: “A child should have a rest, walk, not study in the summer!”. Can’t learning something interesting and self-development be one of the forms of leisure, for example?

Recently I saw a nostalgic post from a friend about how cool and informative it was to go to different summer schools every summer, and under the post there are pictures by the fire mixed with selfies with formalized snakes and lizards (biological profile, after all!), here and the idea has ripened to tell about who, why and why it is useful to study in the summer.

What is a summer school?

To put it simply, this is a camp that teaches things that go beyond the scope of the school curriculum. For example, in general education schools there is definitely no time to show children how to dissect a frog, or how to distinguish an amino acid from a carbohydrate in practice, or how to translate a text from Old Russian. Judging by the stories of my students, they don’t even have time to assemble the simplest electrical circuit in schools, and the lessons are held like lectures. And in summer schools there is both time and conditions, and teachers who can teach knowledge outside the school curriculum, because neither calls, nor teachers’ councils, nor filling out magazines are distracting.

Of course, a huge plus of the summer school is that students get knowledge in practice, and not just a theoretical understanding of the subject being studied. Practical skills are always exciting and definitely can’t be boring! Just imagine how cool it is if you remember the properties of a mysterious dichromate while watching the “eruption” of a chemical volcano! And how interesting it is to learn to distinguish 20 types of plants from each other, at first glance similar to each other! And how great, when you come to school on the first of September, to shine with the solution of Olympiad problems in physics or mathematics, to know a poem about the Krabs cycle or to understand by ear absolutely all foreign songs in the playlist!

Where and how are summer schools held?

I tried to count how many schools I myself attended. It turned out that in seven (almost everyone was delighted!), this includes not only summer, but also autumn and winter educational camps. But now we are talking about summer schools. Almost all of them take place outside the city, because there are excellent conditions for both recreation and education. All children get tired of sitting in a stuffy office at their desks for a year, so it is extremely rare to see traditional classes in summer schools, more often children study in country houses, on verandas, and sometimes just on the street, sitting around the teacher.

By the way, this approach to teaching is very close to me personally, when classes are held in the form of a conversation, and do not rest on the work of the teacher at the blackboard. For example, in one of the summer schools, we went through evolution sitting on rugs in the grass, and zoology and botany while walking in the forest, and it was unusual and effective.

As for practical skills, they are especially needed in natural science subjects, usually in summer schools there are small laboratories in which students are engaged in the experimental part. Laboratory work is significantly different from the middle school level, for example, in one of the summer schools I took biochemistry and our practical work was quite serious and difficult.

Do you think that summer school students don’t have time for leisure? You are mistaken, still how it remains! Just the word “rest” means sports games, various competitions, excursions. Of course, no one canceled discos and bonfires. Children in summer schools have little time for “doing nothing” precisely because leisure is active, that’s the whole point of interest!

And who will teach?

Most often senior university students who are passionate about their subject go to teach in summer schools. For example, when I was a schoolgirl, in the summer I was taught by student teachers from Moscow State University. But I also had teachers with twenty years of experience, many of them made assignments for school Olympiads of various levels, from city ones to All-Russian and International ones.

When and how are summer schools enrolled?

Summer school organizers post information about entrance examinations (test, detailed tasks, olympiad level, etc.) at the beginning of spring. Many summer schools have a competition based on which students are selected, but this mainly concerns preparation for the Olympiads.

Some general education schools organize subject camps during the summer period, where you can improve your knowledge of the school curriculum; as a rule, there is no competition in them. Such school subject camps can be a great option in high school, when in the summer it is important not to forget the program so that it is not so difficult to prepare for exams during the year.

And the most common question: “Why do we need summer schools?”

Three months of summer is a great opportunity to get a versatile development, successfully combining education and leisure. And, in my opinion, the best way to make studying in the summer not a boring activity, but an exciting and interesting thing is to choose a summer school. Usually, one study shift does not last longer than three weeks, not so long that during this time you get tired of studying, but during these weeks it is really possible to become even better in a subject that is already well given at school, or to start productive preparation for Olympiads.

And, of course, the summer school is a great opportunity to meet interested, motivated and purposeful people with whom you can exchange knowledge, support each other, and, perhaps, even be friends for many years after the farewell fire has burned down and everyone will go home.

Therefore, to the question: “Are summer schools useful?”, I always answer that sometimes one study shift is more informative for a student than a year at a desk, so they are definitely useful!

Linguistic schools for adults offer business English courses, a course for executives, for the preparation of young teachers (CELTA), for diplomatic workers, engineers, financiers, lawyers, medical professionals and other programs.

Reasons for visiting summer schools for Russians and foreigners

English is the most popular direction among Russians and foreigners: it is an international language, and its study is available anywhere in the world, the choice of school depends only on the personal preferences of the student. But other foreign languages are also popular: for example, French language programs are available not only in France, but also in Switzerland, Canada, Monaco and other countries. Spanish in addition to Spain is available in the following countries: Switzerland, Germany, Argentina, Mexico. Chinese is studied in the USA, Great Britain, Monaco.

Examples of language summer schools

  • St. George’s School (Switzerland, Montreux) is in the TOP-50 boarding schools in the country. The summer school offers programs for studying four languages: English and French (beginner to advanced level), German and Chinese (beginner level only). Cost from 2420EUR/week
  • Don Quijote Córdoba (Argentina, Cordoba) offers intensive Spanish courses and preparation for the DELE exam for students who are going to study at Spanish universities or work in Spanish-speaking countries. Price from 150EUR/week

  • OISE York summer school is one of the summer centers of the network of language schools in England offering students standard English courses and preparation for Cambridge exams. The school operates on the basis of Queen Ethelburga’s College, and the cost starts from 1700EUR / week.

Obtain a visa to attend a summer school

Russians and foreigners must have an appropriate visa to take a language program in a particular country. It is easier to get a short-term visa than to study a full-time program at a school, college or university, because the duration of summer programs in language schools usually does not exceed 3 months. For some countries, a simplified scheme for obtaining a visa is provided: for example, if you want to study in Cyprus in the summer on a course that lasts no more than 90 days, you can get a visa for free online.

A non-immigrant visa is required to visit the US, the type of visa depends on the duration of the course. Usually, for linguistic courses up to 12 weeks, a B-2 visa is sufficient, and if the duration of the classes is more than 18 hours / week, an F-1 visa. It is necessary to submit documents to the visa center in advance, as processing can take a long time.

To study in short-term summer programs, it is enough for a participant to obtain a non-renewable Short-term Study Visa: it is intended for children under 18 years old who wish to complete programs lasting up to 6 months, and for students studying English in the UK for no more than 11 months.

The Australian Visa Application Center issues tourist visas for language school students, but the duration of the programs must not exceed 90 days. The final decision on the duration of the visa is determined on an individual basis.

Most European countries – for example, Italy, Germany, Spain, France – provide for obtaining a Schengen visa for studying on short-term linguistic programs lasting no more than 3 months.

Learning process in language schools

In language schools, children are divided into small groups of 8-15 people depending on their level of knowledge for effective and productive learning. Distribution is based on the results of the entrance test, which students take upon arrival at the school or in advance remotely . School teachers are native speakers who are qualified to work with children.

Standard language programs include:

  • vocabulary increase
  • language barrier breaking
  • correct pronunciation
  • grammar study
  • reading fluency
  • writing development
  • listening comprehension 90.678

Each of the points is very important when learning a foreign language! Additionally, daily practice is necessary – for this, all the necessary conditions have been created in language schools abroad, where children and adults are completely immersed in the language environment.

CEFR Confirmation Certificates, Language Exams

To determine the results of language programs, students take an “entry test” when entering a language school, which helps to distribute children and adults into groups, and at the end of the program they take a “leaving test” to compare results and determine the level of foreign language proficiency. Most often, after completing the course, graduates receive a certificate of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), but sometimes the result will be the passing of a language exam required for admission to schools, colleges or universities abroad (TOEFL, IELTS, CPE and others).

Language programs for schoolchildren

Language schools around the world can prepare for the international language proficiency test and get the corresponding document, which is recognized by all international educational institutions. Types of language exams:

  • DELE Course – Diploma in Spanish as a Foreign Language
  • DELF/DALF Course – Diploma in French as a Foreign Language
  • CILS/CELI Course – Diploma in Italian as a Foreign Language
  • PET – Cambridge Intermediate
  • FCE – Cambridge Upper-intermediate
  • CPE – Cambridge Proficiency
  • BEC – Business English
  • IELTS / TOEFL – tests that determine the level language proficiency (results are required for admission to many educational institutions)
  • SAT – for admission to colleges and universities in America.

List of language schools abroad for adults and children
