A Child’s Way Kindergarten-Preschool has served young children and their families in Portland for over 35 years.

A Child’s Way Kindergarten-Preschool has been accredited by The National Academy of Early Childhood Programs (NAEYC) since 1997.

Culturally Diverse

We believe that helping children learn to accept what is beautifully unique about themselves and others is of primary importance.

Developmentally Based Curriculum

Our curriculum utilizes a multi-sensory, hands-on approach to learning. It is planned around the whole child.

Large Playground

Our playground includes a play structure, boat, covered sandbox, covered play area, bikes and scooters, many child-created art pieces, raised planter beds and playhouses.

The teachers do a great job helping the kids with resolving social conflicts and communicating their emotions. The curriculum is well designed. Good balance of creative playtime, learning and outside play time.

– Betty

When we moved to this area 3 years ago, everyone kept recommending A Child’s Way. It clearly had a solid reputation, because they’ve worked hard to create a healthy, play-based atmosphere for kids.

– Kelli

Well organized, strong communication, and the teachers are amazing.

– Amy

Amazing school. Amazing teachers. If you have wee ones, check it out. Enroll them. Thank me later.

My son started going to the preschool program on September 1. On November 5, I was told that he was not welcome to continue in their preschool program due to his behavior. In the two months that he attended preschool there, I literally never heard one word from them about any struggles that he was having at all. I would even ask about how his days were and I would just receive a simple reply that it was good or okay. There was never any indication that there was anything to be concerned about until they told me he could no longer continue in their program. They never asked me what strategies we use at home with him, if what they were experiencing was normal for him, let me know what they were trying, nothing! I was never made aware of anything at all! I would have been more then happy to discuss his behavior in great detail with them and make a plan to work on it. And then if that plan did not work, I would have been happy to accept that their program was not a good fit for him and honestly it sounds like it really wasn’t a good fit. This is not how I should have been made aware of the situation though. Their lack of communication for this situation is very disappointing and definitely not what I expected with their reputation.

To make matters worse, their harvest party was on 10/30. Kids were allowed to bring costumes to dress up in while they were at school. I packed my son’s brand new costume into his backpack that morning for him to wear. I waited for them to post pictures of him at school in his costume. When the pictures were posted, my heart shattered. He was the only kid that did not have his costume on. I messaged them to ask if there was some concern with his costume. They very nonchalantly said they couldn’t find is despite searching through his backpack. When he got home, it was still right there in his backpack, in the brand new packaging. I have no idea why this happened. It does not sit right with me at all though.

I would not recommend Kids Way to anyone.

My daughter entered this school in the art department a year ago. Passed the competition for the budget. I attended classes with great pleasure. The son also decided to pass the exams to this school, to the music department. Hooray! Entered. At the end of the year, the teacher offered to go to the Kaleidoscope camp, where the shift “Studies in Borovoye” was organized by the school. I was pleasantly surprised that in addition to the counselors, the teaching staff of the school went to change. The children in the camp had classes with a teacher in plein air, acting, creative classes. The children returned happy) Let’s wait for the new school year!
Yagupova Tatyana Vasilievna, June 2022

Tatyana Vitalievna, good afternoon!

We want to share our joy.
Alena graduated from high school last year – the art department.
In May of this year, Alena won the Design Olympiad and entered the Novocollege in Novosibirsk on a budget.

We want to express our gratitude to the school and all the teaching staff for teaching and artistic development. The school has become the first step in the big world of creativity!

Sincerely, Elena Serkova – mother of Alena Serkova
Elena Serkova, May 2021

Good afternoon!
We express our gratitude for the effective organization of distance learning to teachers:
Grin Yulia Sergeevna,
Gulyaeva Tatyana Afanasievna,
Kolesnikova Elena Vladimirovna.

The material of the classes and tasks were given in advance, in a form understandable to the child, in an adequate volume. Evaluation of completed tasks was objective and timely. All this made it possible to calmly study the material, complete tasks, combining with work in a comprehensive school.
Stupnikova M., May 2020

Good afternoon!
My daughter Prohoda Valeria is in the 1st grade, violin teacher Olga Nikolaevna Gerasimenko. Distance lessons were organized via Skype, were held regularly, and the child and I were comfortable. In advance, Olga Nikolaevna sent new sketches, printed them out and studied.

As for solfeggio, it was somewhat more difficult, since the new information was incomprehensible to the parent, but the child learned it.

Thank you for organizing the learning process in conditions of self-isolation.
We really hope for regular training from September ✨

Sincerely, Yulia Sergeevna Prokhoda
Yulia Sergeevna Prokhoda, May 2020

My son is studying for the second year at Children’s Art School No. 17 MBU. I want to thank the teacher of solfeggio and musical literature Kolesnikova Elena Vladimirovna for her patience and attention to my son. Elena Vladimirovna is a kind, sensitive person and an excellent teacher. She is always positive and conveys her mood to the children. Due to such a situation in the country, we were transferred to distance learning, at the beginning I was afraid how my son would complete the assignments, since I have no musical education and if he doesn’t understand something in the assignments, I simply won’t be able to explain to him, but Elena Vladimirovna is always in touch and you can call her at any time, and she explains everything.

In the end, I would like to say that the transition to distance learning did not affect the quality of my son’s education. Elena Vladimirovna is always in touch and ready to help at any time.
Mitko Olga Vladimirovna, 05/23/2020

Good afternoon! According to solfeggio training is organized competently, intelligibly. The tasks are all clear and the child himself solved them without help.
Thanks a lot to our teachers.

Sincerely, Daria Patrakova.
Daria Patrakova, May 2020

good day
I would like to share my opinion about the work of the music department of Children’s School of Art 17. The solfeggio homework was organized at the proper level. I liked that the theory is given first, so that you can refresh the lessons in your memory, then the assignments. I want to note the work of the teacher Yakovlev L.A. Feedback is not applicable. We make corrections, take into account errors. Of the minuses on this issue: my child is not registered on the VKontakte network, so she has to wait for me to come home from work to see the task.
With a teacher in the specialty Gerasimenko O.N., we were also able to find a solution for how the lessons would be conducted. We have lessons twice a week via Skype. At the same time, the teacher and the student can see and hear each other and immediately correct mistakes and clarify incomprehensible points.
Of the minuses of a remote exam in a specialty: recording a video on a child does not have the best effect. Takes away a lot of nerves from parents and children. I think this situation is not only with us. Another small minus. The child does not have his own computer (dad works at home, he occupies the only computer for the whole working day), so I had to postpone classes.
In general, everything is wonderful. Thanks to everyone who organized distance learning for us.
Tatyana Milko
Tatyana Milko, May 2020

Hello!
Distance learning pleases with good organization, quick response and interesting tasks. There is always time to get things done. The check is carried out promptly, there are always explanatory comments about the mistakes made and problems during execution.
Many thanks to the teachers for their support and cheer up.

Sincerely, Ulyana Gruzdeva, 4th grade student.
Gruzdeva Ulyana, May 2020

I am against distance learning as such!!! The child must interact with the teachers personally (this affects the learning process, especially when the parent cannot help at all, due to their lack of understanding of the subjects) But I would like to note that the work of the Music School in such training is very well established. The work of all teachers is only five plus! Firstly: they are always ready to help the child (if any difficulties arise), they respond very quickly to the questions asked, they work on video communication in discipline (but this is a big minus anyway, as it does not give a correct understanding and perception of the lessons: the connection is bad, then there is no Internet access, then just the phone, due to its capabilities, displays the poor quality of the camera)! It is very hard for both children and teachers who send letters with results (grades) at 24 o’clock in the morning !!!! Thank you very much: Yakovleva LA, Chumakova MA, Gulyaeva TA!!! (Antonenko Yu.V.)
Antonenko Yu.V., May 2020

Hello.
When my child, Gusto Gordey, attends a music school, he takes his studies more seriously. When he works with a teacher at school and repeats the material covered during homework, the material is absorbed much better.
Also, live communication with your peers at school is very important.
As for my opinion on the organization of distance learning, I want to express my gratitude to Lyudmila Alexandrovna for her constant communication and help in learning new material and homework.

Sincerely,
Anna Gusto
Anna Gusto May 2020

Hello, dear parents and teachers! This is the first time we have encountered distance learning. In general, my opinion is positive. Classes continue, and this is the main thing! We like the organization of the educational process in theoretical disciplines. The child enjoys learning. We express our gratitude to Kolesnikova Elena Vladimirovna, everything is built competently, clearly and accessible. There is always feedback. “Live” communication, of course, cannot be replaced by anything, but in this situation it is a way out. You can sometimes use such a system in full-time education. Sincerely, the Shadura family.
Shadur family, May 20, 2020

Dear leaders and teachers, we would like to express our deep gratitude to you for your work, for your dedication to the noble cause you serve! We are very lucky that our daughter Ekaterina was among you and we see how important it was for her and how useful this experience was in her still small life. Of course, special thanks go to Elena Vladimirovna Mendybayeva! He is an amazing person and a great teacher. Without any exaggeration, we can say that she is the best teacher that Katya has met in her life, and we have the same opinion. 🙂 Dear Elena Vladimirovna, we sincerely wish you further creative success, good health, great happiness, talented students, and endless love! We wish prosperity and creative success to the entire school team! Thank you very much!
The Malinnikov family, May 2018

At the end of the school year, I really want to express my gratitude to the entire teaching staff of the Children’s Art School No. 17 in Novosibirsk for their polite, attentive attitude and care for each student, help in choosing their favorite instrument, instilling a love for music, raising a cultured person.
Children attend all classes with great interest. At home, with pleasure, every free minute they sit down at their instrument, play familiar melodies, compose something, write down notes.
The concerts organized at the school deserve special attention: a creative, sincere atmosphere allows each child to open up and demonstrate their achievements.
The quality of the services provided at the school is confirmed by numerous certificates and diplomas.
I wish you creative success, inspiration and prosperity!
Galliamova Varvara Petrovna, May 2018

For 6 years already my son, Denis, has been studying at Children’s Art School No. 17 in the class of wind instruments. I want to say sincere gratitude to those who make the life of our children more beautiful, introducing them to the musical work of great musicians, teaching them musical literacy and virtuosity. Dear teachers and school administration! Thank you for the quality and stability, for the individual approach to each child, for your understanding and patience! Thanks to you, children learn to understand and love beauty. My son gets a lot of positive emotions, loves his teachers very much!
Rodionova Victoria Mikhailovna, April 2018

Our art school is a large, warm and joyful house where creative, positive people who are passionate about their profession work, where young musicians, singers and artists feel comfortable.
At the entrance you will be met by charming ladies who will always help our children to get dressed and undressed, learn lessons with them and, be sure, they will not let you out of school without a mother and without a hat.
A team of wonderful teachers work here, who teach our children, help them develop their creative talents, love them and know how to be friends with them. I am very glad that thanks to Elena Vladimirovna Mendybaeva, a very sensitive, flexible, emotional teacher, my children (and our family as a whole) have a favorite musical instrument – domra, and Elena Vladimirovna’s lessons have become their favorite pastime.
There is always a calm and friendly atmosphere, which is necessary for children to play, sing and create with pleasure. The creations of children will not leave anyone indifferent. Young artists create magnificent drawings, batik, clay products, stunning felt dolls, painted boxes, plates and much, much more. You can always listen to the creations of musicians and singers with pleasure in a small but very cozy hall where school concerts are held. There are so many great ensembles here that you are sure to find your favorite! I found mine!

Sincerely, Simonova Vera Vasilievna.

Dear teachers of the art school!
I would like to express my gratitude to you for your daily work. Two of my sons study at your school: the eldest Misha (3 years old), the youngest Andrey (2 years old). During this time, my sons learned to play the piano, which is regularly shown at various family holidays. Children really like to make music, they are happy to attend school and prepare for classes. Separately, I would like to say about various interesting events held at the school, to which students are attracted. Children receive the necessary knowledge and experience.
Thank you very much!

I would like to say that I have a lot of vivid emotions associated with art school No. 17.
First of all, this is a joy for my daughter, namely, for the fact that she is surrounded by creative, enthusiastic teachers who easily involve students in the learning process.
In an atmosphere of care and attention, children receive inspiration and motivation to implement their ideas.
Already at the stage of creative tests upon admission, a serious approach to each student was felt, and today, in the learning process, I would like to thank the school staff for the results achieved and wish new creative ideas and tests.
Thank you for your work!
Sincerely, Irina Handziuk.
