What kids club will give a child – News – IQ Research and Education Portal – National Research University Higher School of Economics

REPORT AUTHOR:

Boris Kupriyanov , Leading Analyst at the Center for Socio-Economic Development of Schools, Institute of Education, National Research University Higher School of Economics.

Children’s clubs are different. Some of them are engaged in additional education for children: teaching foreign languages, drawing, dancing, etc. Other clubs allow you to find like-minded people for “informal” hobbies, for example, for skateboarding, parkour (overcoming obstacles – railings, parapets, etc.), graffiti. Such contrasts within the same format raise questions from parents. They were clarified by Boris Kupriyanov in the article “The role and place of the club in the additional education of children” and other studies (see also Additional education is being reformatted).

What is the club

Like adults, the kids club is a community of interests. Clubs belong to the field of additional education, but, in fact, serve more as a platform for communication. Education is not a mandatory element of such classes, unlike work in other formats (clubs, sections, studios, sports, art and music schools).

The club is rather a teenage, more free format of leisure. Club themes are often introduced by teenagers themselves. They want to see in additional education “phenomena recognizable to themselves”. This is how communities appear that unite fans of anime, flash mobs, street workout (classes on street sports grounds: uneven bars, wall bars, horizontal bars).

There are clubs with more or less professional training (for young musicians, aircraft modellers, sailors, etc.) and amateur clubs.

Advantages of clubs

Classes in the club have their advantages and disadvantages. Spending time there is development and relaxation at the same time. Such platforms are good because learning takes place without pressure and tension. The proposed classes are not burdensome for teenagers who already have a high workload at school.

Also club activities:

  • learn to communicate . In the club, a teenager asserts his status among his peers and learns to solve relationship problems. Communication on an equal footing with people with similar interests fills those communication gaps that are formed at school and in the yard. Loneliness in the classroom is compensated by friendship and mutual understanding in the club. Open associations are useful so that “teenagers can come here just like that – not necessarily for classes, but in order to … celebrate a birthday, listen to music,” Kupriyanov noted. It is clear that “on the way out” such a club strengthens the teenager’s self-confidence and helps him integrate into society.
  • help self-knowledge . A teenager in clubs reveals himself: he learns introspection, begins to realize his strengths and weaknesses. The “help of the audience” is important to him: the club members formulate a problem, discuss it, and find a solution. In “routine” circumstances (at school) this is not always possible.
  • encourage activity . Circles and other developmental activities are largely built on the “monologues” of teachers (the leader teaches, the children learn skills). In clubs, a dialogue is built, they are inherently interactive. The key word for the club is “amateur”.
  • let you learn from each other . Active communication in the club is accompanied by the exchange of knowledge and experience. Graffiti lovers discuss new motives for their work, members of literary clubs discuss published novels and poems, athletes talk about competitions. These hobby-based clubs are reminiscent of communities of philatelists, numismatists, etc., in which the level of awareness is especially valued. Therefore, the club can give an “increase” in erudition.
  • teach social responsibility . There is a clearly defined community ideology in the clubs. They generally have “sociality”. Thus, the manifestation of social initiative, “social design” is encouraged: identifying the problem, solving it, analyzing everything that has been done. There are many options for community service. So, young environmentalists are planting trees. Members of dance clubs teach their art to orphaned peers. All this teaches self-organization and actions in a team.

Cons of clubs

Despite all the advantages, the club format is not suitable for everyone. The disadvantages of clubs include the fact that they:

  • do not provide system knowledge . There is no purposeful education in clubs. This free format rarely provides clear educational programs. Therefore, it is hardly suitable for serious, “academic” study of subjects and topics.
  • do not always achieve the result . The result of learning is the key point that decisively breeds clubs and many other (more classical) formats of additional education for children. In this regard, clubs are the opposite of music, art and sports schools. These schools are results driven. For this, rehearsals, training and demonstration of children’s achievements are necessary. Ideally, you need to get closer to the standards of performing arts, sportsmanship, etc. For clubs, on the contrary, the result is not at all obligatory – it can be expressed solely in emotions. There are no standards.
  • work spontaneously . Classes in the club are not always regular. Educational attitudes are very liberal. If a child needs to be disciplined, it is better to choose a circle or section. The club, in fact, is conceived as an “auxiliary” institution. “If a child quickly develops an interest or need for an educational space, he will move to another type of association,” the article says.
  • short-lived . The cycle of existence of the club, according to some experts, is three to four years. Not enough for stable employment.
