The patriarch of the forest – so A.S. Pushkin named the oak for its dominant role in the family of trees of the Russian forest.

Oak has slightly lobed leaves. In June, golden catkins of flowers adorn the tree, and in autumn, fruits appear – acorns.

The love and respect of the people came to the oak not by chance. It has excellent wood, which is used in the national economy. Oak – a protector from dry winds, decoration of parks. Shady, wind resistant and durable. And these qualities are just what you need for landscaping.

Acorns are the best food for many forest animals.

The specific epithet “Mongolian” was given to this species, since the first specimen of the plant was described from the valley of the Argun River above the mouth of the Gazimur River, located opposite the territory that belonged to Mongolia in the 19th century; at present, this right bank of the Argun River belongs to Inner Mongolia of the PRC; Mongolian oak is not found in the Mongolian People’s Republic. The typical site of the Mongolian oak is now a protected natural area in the Trans-Baikal Territory: the Relic Oaks reserve.

Oak has always been considered not only a valuable tree, but also a symbol of strength, power, longevity and invincibility. In Rus’, centuries-old oaks were considered sacred. No wonder he was depicted on the coats of arms of the nobility, he was worshiped by many peoples – this tree was sacred and was part of cult rituals.

Description.

Tall tree usually up to 25 meters high and up to 1 meter in diameter, with thick gray fissured bark. In favorable conditions, reaching a height of up to 30 m; near the northern border of distribution, near the sea coast and in the mountains, it rarely grows higher than 10-12 m, sometimes it has the form of a shrub. It grows slowly, lives more than 350 years. Cold hardy look. Light-requiring, wind-resistant.

Leaves dense, almost leathery, obovate, lobed, up to 15 cm long and 9 cm wide;

Flowers dioecious:

– stamens collected in long hanging catkins;

– pistillate – sessile, few in number, collected in inconspicuous, almost sessile inflorescences – dichasia0004 – acorn, ellipsoid, up to 1.5 cm wide and 2 cm long, surrounded by a thick hemispherical plush.

Flowering in May, fruits ripen in September.

Distribution and ecology.

In the Russian Far East: Primorye, Sakhalin, Kuriles (south),

General distribution: China (server and northeast), Korea, Japan.

Grows in cedar-broad-leaved, broad-leaved, fir-broad-leaved forests, forms primary and secondary forests. One of the most common tree species in the forests of the south of the Far East. Two other species are common in the very south of the Russian Far East: toothed oak (south of Primorye, Kunashir Island) and curly oak (southern part of Sakhalin and the Kuriles).

Mongolian oak – a descendant of a southerner. Its evergreen relatives are found in Central China, on the southern slopes of the Qinling Range.

But on the northern half of this ridge grow other types of oak, whose leaves dry up by autumn, but do not fall off. On Qinling, transitional forms of oaks can be traced, from everlasting to summer green. Our Mongolian oak belongs to the latter. Its dead leaves rustling harshly in the wind are partially preserved throughout the winter, especially in young specimens, and fall off only in the spring. He has not yet had time to “adjust” to the conditions of a variable climate and develop a device for separating the base of the petiole of dead leaves from the shoot.

The Mongolian oak differs from its European counterparts in its short stature and rarely reaches a height of twenty or more meters. Only in dense shady forests are centuries-old trees two or three girths and twenty meters high still preserved. In open areas, the growth of oak is hindered by the winter wind, which often blows from the northwest for many days.

The buds, weakly protected by scales, die off, the crown becomes bushy, the trunk takes on a short, sometimes creeping shape.

Everyone who has been in the Amgun valley is amazed by the squat oaks that are tightly pressed against the southern slope. Undersized, not higher than two meters, they occupy vast areas on the Zeya-Bureinskaya Plain in the Amur Region. In winter, under a layer of snow, these trees are not afraid of freezing northwest winds.

Not every area is favorable for Mongolian oak. Its undergrowth develops well in clearings of cedar-broad-leaved and dark coniferous forests.

We owe the spread of oak to such a bird as the jay. This noisy bird does not have a sublingual sac, like a nutcracker, but its esophagus is able to expand and accommodate five or six acorns. The jay, like the nutcracker, stores food, carries acorns far from the mother tree.

Oak acorns, settled near rivers, lakes, can be carried by water. This is how groves arose on the sandy hills of the Amur, flooded every ten years. But the resettlement of oak with the help of water is limited to only one direction – downstream.

Wood. It is used in industry for the manufacture of critical wooden parts, plywood, parquet, furniture, barrels and facing material for finishing buildings, wagons, and ships. Aged in water, it acquires strength and a beautiful dark shade.

Oak wood contains up to 2%, roots – up to 10% tannins.

Many forest animals feed on acorns. Pheasants feed on them in autumn and spring. Cattle eat them ground, and poultry eat them crushed.

Man has learned how to make a substitute for coffee from acorns, use the leaves when pickling vegetables and mushrooms. But even this does not exhaust the significance of the oak. A decoction of its bark helps to cure some gastric diseases.

Turgenev oak was cloned in Voronezh June 21, 2022 – June 21, 2022

Society0002 Voronezh specialists were able to clone the famous Turgenev oak, which was destroyed by a hurricane last year at the age of 198 in the Spasskoye-Lutovinovo Museum-Reserve in the Oryol Region.

Now five clones are growing in test tubes – small oak trees, Oleg Korchagin, acting director of the All-Russian Research Institute of Forest Genetics, Breeding and Biotechnology, said on June 21.

“The work was very difficult, since these are the worst conditions for cloning: the tree is old, rotted at rest (by winter), but we managed to take a biological object – explants, part of biological tissue. Usually scientists work with young objects, with young tissues, but here there are only problems, because the tree is old and rotten. According to Korchagin, VNII specialists have not yet had to clone such an old tree in a test tube, but they consider it a matter of honor to save the Turgenev Oak: “who but us.” As a result, the cloned samples will be planted in a greenhouse and will receive seedlings identical to the Turgenev oak.

Last November, an oak planted by the writer Ivan Turgenev fell victim to a hurricane in the Spasskoe-Lutovinovo Museum-Reserve. It was reported that he would still represent Russia at the European Tree of the Year competition, but the oak fell under sanctions – he was banned from participating due to events in Ukraine.

Spasskoye-Lutovinovo – the estate of Turgenev’s mother, where he spent his childhood and where he regularly came for holidays and vacations, and later stayed in exile. Here he wrote several works, including the novel Fathers and Sons.
