Turn to Duluth — Lyceum Internet magazine

Sheri Savinski and Vera Meshko (right), Duluth, 2008

This year Petrozavodsk and Duluth are celebrating the 30th anniversary of twinning. While the eternal pendulum of “love-hate” is swinging at the interstate level, Petrozavodsk and Duluth residents continue to communicate, visit each other, and start new initiatives.

Although we must honestly admit that our American friends have never been spoiled by the ease of international communication. We are used to the fact that a few hours by car – and now Finland is painfully familiar, and weekends are more than enough for Stockholm or Tallinn. Another thing is if you are in the center of a continent surrounded by oceans. The rest of the world automatically goes into the category of distant lands – it is not for nothing that the word “overseas” is often used to designate the category of foreignness, which literally means “overseas”. During my years at the City Hall’s Department of External Relations, I was always fascinated by this very trait in our American partners – their determination to make efforts first to mentally and then actually overcome geography.

Nowadays, when the illusion prevails that the gap between question and answer has been reduced to one click, it is difficult to imagine the dramatic and touching situation that formed the basis of cordial ties between cities. In 1986, the first group from Duluth, arriving at the railway station of Petrozavodsk, was incredibly surprised to see people on the platform with welcome posters in English. As it soon became clear, many of those who came belonged to the families of American Finns, for whom the American delegation became a symbol of hope for the restoration of lost ties with their relatives.

This emotional impulse determined our relationship for many years. Everyone who in one way or another participated in sister city relations notes that bright pages of their life are connected with them.

My acquaintance with the American brother took place in my student years.

What can you remember about Duluth when you are nineteen years old and you are racing along the highway in the company of a Japanese woman, a Pakistani and a Serbian? When, in a fit of student fun, you were suddenly entrusted with the steering wheel, and you must urgently change lanes from the extreme left to the extreme right lane, otherwise the turn to Duluth will again slip by.

A revolving restaurant, a lighthouse and a traditional drawbridge magnet are not enough for a first set of memories. And another phrase: “I told you that only crazy people walk around Duluth on foot!” – This is my Serbian friend from the roof of the parking building, commenting on what is happening. Twilight, a lone black guy in a hood pulled over his eyes hides from the April wind behind a trash can. American romance.

The real impressions came later, when I was lucky enough to meet those who stood at the origins of sister city relations and those who came to replace them. 30 years of twinning is a good reason to remember our American friends.

For Herb Bergson (mayor of Duluth in 2003-2007), a visit to Petrozavodsk in 2005 was the first acquaintance with Russia. Early May, evening, Lenin Avenue. In place of the current “Maxi” is a wasteland with an indistinct green fence. The city is shrouded in thick white fog. “Man, you don’t understand! You are a world man, you simply have to go!” – one of the visitors of the restaurant “Caucasus” was imbued with Mayor Bergson’s strong drinking sympathy. Of course, no one knows the language, but for a long time I observe two figures gesticulating in the fog. It’s a pity, but the friendship of peoples has to be nipped in the bud: to let the overseas mayor go to the city’s hot spots at night does not raise a hand.

Herb Bergson at the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Victory, Petrozavodsk, May 9, 2005

The next day, Mayor Bergson checks my e-mail on my computer. It turns out upset:

– Got the bad news? I ask.

“Almost a hundred messages,” he laments, “and everyone is outraged by this runaway bride!

I immediately imagine the absent-minded Julia Roberts with the eyes of a frightened doe. Indeed, in Duluth, Georgia, the bride literally ran away from the wedding. The mayor of Duluth, Minnesota got it for it.

— Even if the cities weren’t mixed up, what can you do about it? – I’m surprised.

– Like what? I’m the mayor, I have to respond!

I think about how captivating it is when caring for others is shown so sincerely and taken so seriously. And it’s not about American democracy at all…

In 2005, residents of Duluth raised funds to install a playground for disabled children in Petrozavodsk. The playground was installed in June 2006 on the territory of the center for children with disabilities “Rodnik”

Perhaps the fondest memory of Duluth came from contact with Professor of Medicine Edwin Haller . From 2005-2007, Edwin chaired the Duluth Sister Cities Commission, and before that, many years were devoted to developing relationships between medical faculties, physicians, and students in both cities.

My, alas, short acquaintance with him will forever be remembered by the mysterious atmosphere inspired by the culture of North American Indians.

First, a few years earlier, Edwin’s wife Irina, having attended the celebration of the 300th anniversary of Petrozavodsk, left us a small piece of birch bark in a plastic frame as a gift. A smooth red rhombus is completely dotted with a pattern of small holes. It turns out that this is a traditional Indian technique of biting through birch bark with your teeth. A frame with birch bark stood in our department for many years. Those to whom we were especially not indifferent, were expected by the test for ingenuity. Over the years, there were only two guessers.

Later, in 2007, Ed Haller arranged for a team to build the traditional Ojibwe canoe boat to Petrozavodsk: these native Americans still inhabit the Duluth area. Birch bark harvesting ceremonies, stories about finding wild rice, legends about dream catchers – all this entered everyday life for a moment and settled in it with a short word “migwich” – thank you. Thank you, Edwin: meeting, even for a short time, a person with an open heart is a rare gift of fate. Edwin passed away in December of the same 2007.

Truly related to Petrozavodsk Melissa Kadlek and Dan Green , having taken adopted children from the Petrozavodsk Orphanage No. 2 into their family. Melissa is very receptive and never loses her optimism. I would like to think that her work in Petrozavodsk in the 1990s as an English teacher contributed to this.

“It’s -25 here in Duluth,” she writes to me, “Bolshoi dybak! Polnyj otstoi!”. That’s who really will not wait for the weather by the sea. With Melissa joining the Sister Cities Commission, it suddenly became clear that there was a lot more that could be done. For example, organize a tour of the Rhythm ensemble in Duluth or arrange an exhibition of watercolors by the Petrozavodsk artist Vladimir Lobanov.

In general, our long-standing relationship with Duluth is the clearest evidence of what a powerful driving force personal involvement, caring and keen interest can be. Suffice it to mention that twinning projects in Duluth are carried out by volunteers who help with transportation, housing, and fundraising. A public organization – the Duluth Sisterhood Commission – also exists through donations and grants.

Many Petrozavodsk residents remember with great warmth Sheri Savinski . During the period from 2008 to 2015, when Duluth actively participated in the Open World program, Sheri and her associates organized a number of thematic visits for professionals from Petrozavodsk in the field of health, social work, and youth work.

Thanks to Sheri’s enthusiasm, in 2014-2015 the cities managed to implement a joint project “New Steps for Children and Families at Risk”. The focus of the project was the so-called “Duluth Model” as an effective tool for responding to domestic violence. In 2014, the Duluth Model received a Gold Award from the international organization World Future Council for a system of work that implies full protection and autonomy for victims of violence, coupled with holding the perpetrators accountable.

St. Scholastics who study Russian, as well as all those who are interested in our country, Russian-speaking residents of Duluth, former residents of Petrozavodsk, gather in Sir Benedict’s Tavern by the Lake for the well-known “Russian table”. The tradition was started Tom Morgan , teacher of the Russian language, as well as the initiator and long-term leader of the student exchange program between the College of St. Scholastica and the Karelian Pedagogical Institute, now the Institute of Foreign Languages of PetrSU. Having been there personally, I can confirm that the atmosphere at the Russian Table is really wonderful, although it is accompanied by the ubiquitous American sandwiches and chips!

Joyce Benson – here is another bright image that has absorbed the fading spirit of twinning. Visiting Petrozavodsk for the first time at 1987, Joyce returned again and again for many years. On her last visit in 2012, Joyce was in a special way excited. Having plunged into nostalgic wanderings around Petrozavodsk, constantly meeting various acquaintances, Joyce found herself, in the end, at the Golikovsky market. There, among the collapse of winter hats, Chinese pants and autumn cabbage, a boy suddenly appeared and disappeared, having managed to shove a mobile phone into her hand with the words “This is you!”. Dumbfounded, Joyce held the phone to her ear. There was something crackling and creaking.

– Hello, I can’t hear you! Joyce pleaded.

— Joyce, is that you? yelled the receiver, “I love you!”

Who it was remained a mystery to Joyce. Let this be our collective declaration of love to her.

Although, why is she alone? To all our dear friends in Duluth and Petrozavodsk, those who could not be mentioned here, and who remained true to themselves during these years that changed both us and our countries.
