“You got in my way boy! Should I kiss you or hit you?” Marlene Dietrich asked Humphrey Bogart when they met. They weren’t limited to just one kiss. He was a cynic and a drunkard. But no one wore hats so elegantly and no one burned women with his eyes like that. Humphrey Bogart was old fashioned. If you fell in love, you got married. All wives are actresses. The third, Mayo Meto, drank even more than Humphrey. She was so jealous that she set fire to the house several times, and once stabbed Bogart with a knife. The couple was called the “Warring Bogarts”. It was Mayo who spread rumors about Humphrey’s affair with her partner in the legendary Casablanca, Ingrid Bergman. To refute this nonsense, Humphrey and Ingrid swore that they could not stand each other. And they didn’t lie.

A 19-year-old debutante turned out to be more dangerous than the famous Ingrid Bergman. Humphrey met Lauren Bacall on the set of another of his iconic films, To Have and Have Not. Lauren was so afraid of the 45-year-old Bogart that she looked at him frowningly, her head bowed low. But then this look made her a sex symbol. They got married a year later. Friends called their house “The Rat Hole”. The most noisy parties were held there. Lauren gave Humphrey two children. They lived together for 12 years – until Bogart’s death. He died at 57 from cancer – an addiction to cigarettes and alcohol affected. Lauren outlived her beloved by 57 years. She called Humphrey Bogart the best man to walk the earth.
