What to see in Austin – the best attractions in the city

Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Center for the Performing Arts is home to the three performing groups that founded it – the Austin Symphony Orchestra (ASO), Austin Opera and Ballet Austin. It was opened in 2008 in a beautiful modern building located on the shores of Lake Lady Bird. More than a hundred different events are held here every year – from classical concerts, performances and ballet productions, to avant-garde performances, circus shows, parties, film screenings and festivals.

The Long Center has several halls of different sizes. The largest of them is Michael and Susan Dell Hall, which is designed for 2442 visitors. Debra and Kevin Rollins Studio Theater has only 229 seats, but is very popular as it is used on the principle of a round theater and allows viewers to immerse themselves in the action and even become part of it. Another popular venue is City Terrace and Hartman Concert Park. This outdoor stage has been hosting free Hartman Foundation concerts by the Austin Symphony for over 20 summer seasons, with great panoramic views of downtown. Listeners sit on the grass to enjoy the music. Many take blankets and baskets with them and have a picnic.

Paramount Theater

The historic Paramount Theater first opened its doors to the public in October 1915. It was built in the neoclassical style as a vaudeville house by the famous Chicago theater architect John Eberson. On the day of the premiere, some scenes from Oliver Twist, musical and dance numbers were shown here. But pretty soon, at 19In 1929, following the spirit of the times, the owner redesigned the building to also show silent films accompanied by an organ or a live orchestra.

On stage and in the Paramount cinema, many stars of the theatrical, music and film industries shone – winners of the Oscar, Grammy, Tony, and Golden Globe. The great Harry Houdini even performed here at one time. And in the ceiling of the auditorium, to the left of the famous image of St. Cecilia, there is still a hole cut out to perform one of his tricks.

Today, famous artists and popular stand-up comedians present their shows in the theater, as well as recording sketches and podcasts. In addition, following a long tradition, seasonal film screenings of classic films are held here. So, for example, in October you can watch masterpieces in the horror genre. And in January – Christmas comedies and melodramas.

Mount Bonnell

Mount Bonnell is one of Austin’s oldest tourist attractions, having been recognized as such since the 1850s. In addition, the mountain is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Texas Historic Landmark. This is the highest point in the city (236 m) with an excellent observation deck. To get to it, you need to overcome 102 steps of a staircase paved with limestone. This is not a steep and quite comfortable climb, which even children will be able to do. Visiting the observation deck is free, and it is not forbidden to bring pets with you.

At the top there is a pavilion and a picnic area where you can relax, have a bite to eat and take atmospheric photos. The panorama of the city is especially beautiful in the pre-sunset time. But do not rush to leave this place after dark. Due to its low levels of light pollution, Mount Bonnell is the only location in the city suitable for stargazing. The best time to visit this attraction is on weekdays, as it is always very crowded on weekends.

And already in 2018, the information portal Time included it in the list of the hundred greatest places in the world that are definitely worth a visit.

Zilker Metropolitan Park

Zilker Metropolitan Park’s lush, green landscape can enchant any traveler. It covers an area of 142 hectares in the city between the south bank of the Colorado River and Barton Creek and provides a lot of opportunities for outdoor recreation in comfort. Almost 15 kilometers of footpaths laid here allow you to enjoy views of the hills covered with wild flowers, oak groves, sunny lawns, picturesque streams and ponds.

Active guests can ride a bike, go boating and kayaking, and fish here. For younger visitors, the park has a large playground and a wonderful Zilker Eagle mini train. But one of the main points of attraction of this green area is the outdoor pool of Barton Springs, which is filled by four natural springs. It works all year round, as the water temperature in it always keeps in the range from +20°C to +23°C. The structure of the park also includes the Zilker Botanical Garden, which consists of nine gardens of different themes.

The Zilker Hillside Theater is responsible for the cultural content of the holiday – an open-air theater venue that hosts many annual events, including the famous Shakespeare in the Park. The green zone is also an arena for festivals and city celebrations. Thinkery Museum

There is no better place to visit in Austin with young children than the Thinkery Museum. This amazing educational interactive space is built on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) games. Here, children from birth to 11 years old can explore the world, learn, develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, engaging in the most natural activity for them – the game.

The area of the museum is divided into several spaces.

  • In the Smile Here photo booth, you can have your portrait taken and displayed on one of three displays.
  • Train Town – a miniature world of trains, where all the models are made of wood.
  • Innovators’ Workshop is the museum’s largest gallery, where art meets science, challenging children’s imagination and practical skills.
  • Spark Shop is a place where kids can craft with real tools and create models.

Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge

If there are truly unique places to visit in Austin, the Congress Avenue Bridge over Lady Bird Lake is one of them. . And the point is not at all in its architectural value – this is a quite ordinary arched structure made of concrete. What makes this attraction stunningly interesting is the largest colony of bats in the state of Texas, which live in secluded corners of its structures. There are up to one and a half million individuals here. Mostly these are grown-up cubs and females. The latter migrate here in March and stay until October-November to give birth and raise them.

As the sun sets, they leave their hiding places and cascade into the sky, hunting for nocturnal insects and forming surreal and ever-changing living clouds. Usually the show lasts from 19:30 to 22:00 – only the flight itself takes about 45 minutes.

There are several excellent points from where you can admire this stunning spectacle. Many prefer to be placed on the pedestrian part of the bridge in order to see everything from a height. Another option is to sit in a small boat or pleasure boat on the lake, which provides a very interesting perspective. Also near the south end of the bridge, on a grassy knoll, is an observation deck owned by the Statesman Bat Observation Center. You can use it. The main thing is to look to the east, since it is in this direction that flights will be made.

The Escape Game Austin

The best fun in Austin for a group of friends should build team spirit and give bright emotions. The Escape Game, located on Red River Street, fits that description perfectly. Players can choose from five interactive quest rooms where they will have to work together to solve amazingly interesting puzzles in order to win.

The most difficult of them is Prison Break, where, according to the scenario, you need to escape from a gloomy prison, made in the style of the middle of the last century. The Heist quest puts players in the role of museum robbers. And Gold Rush – sends to California in 1848-1860, to the gold digger’s hut to find the nuggets hidden there. The Playground Quest is a unique and fun activity in Austin that takes participants back to their high school days. In contrast, in Classified, everything is as serious as possible. To pass it, you need to complete a secret mission and stop a dangerous international threat.

The puzzles from The Escape Game Austin are all very different, which makes the participants come back here again to participate in a new scenario.

Austin Food Tour

It’s no exaggeration to say that an Austin food tour is a foodie’s dream come true. The food here is elevated to the rank of art, but at the same time it is simple, satisfying, homemade and very tasty. And the choice of cafes and restaurants is huge. The main stars of the city’s gastronomic scene are tacos and barbecues. As for the latter, Austin’s most famous place for great grilled brisket and ribs is the Franklin Barbecue. This is an institution that began its history in 2009year with a small diner in the trailer, and already in 2011 was named by the editor of the famous American edition of Bon Appetit “the best barbecue in the country.”

Those who go on a gastronomic tour should remember that tacos for breakfast are a wonderful tradition of this city. For a good start to the day, pick up some crispy tortillas stuffed with scrambled eggs, melted cheese, black beans, avocados, tomatoes, and greens from a nearby food truck. And you can make your own itinerary by visiting the Austin Visitor Center and using free maps and brochures for tourists, or you can turn to professionals for help. In any case, Austin will surprise and give an unforgettable experience of urban gastronomy.

Sixth explosion in three weeks in Texas

Image copyright Getty Images

At least one person was injured in an explosion in south Austin, Texas. This is the sixth explosion in Texas in three weeks that killed two people.

Police and the FBI believe the incidents are related, but have not yet been able to locate the IED maker.

Earlier Tuesday, US President Donald Trump said that the explosions in Texas were the work of “sick people” and promised to find the culprit.

“These Austin bombings are terrible,” Trump said. “This is obviously a very, very sick person – or maybe people. But we’ll get to the bottom of it.”

  • Owen Peake: the explosion that made me a parasnowboarder

A new incident occurred in a Goodwill charity shop. The victim, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital with “potentially serious but not life-threatening” injuries.

Austin police later reported that it was not a bomb but an “incendiary device” that went off in the store, and there is no reason to link this incident to previous explosions at this time.

Earlier Tuesday, an explosive device went off at a trucking company FedEx warehouse in Schertz, a hundred kilometers from Austin, on a sorting line.

The bomb package was sent to a private address in Austin from another private address in the same city. The address to which the package was sent has not been released by the police.

This case was another incident with a similar scenario: unidentified people send bombs in parcels to private addresses. As a result, two residents of the city were killed and six more were injured.

The first bomb exploded on 2 March. The victim of the explosion was 29-year-old Anthony Stephen House. He died in his house.

Ten days later there were two more explosions. Draylen Mason, 17, brought the bomb in a package to his home, where it went off. Mason died, his mother was seriously injured.
