THE ANT HILL KIDS: Break your legs with a sledgehammer or go to Hell

Roch Thériault was a man with a mission: to save himself and his followers from the coming apocalypse. As a child, Thériault dropped out of school and started teaching himself the Old Testament. He was convinced that a war between good and evil was about to come, and that this would bring about the end of the world. Thus, he converted to the Seventh-Day Adventist Church and lived by their rules: no tobacco, no unhealthy foods, no alcohol or drugs. Thériault was a charismatic man, good at persuading others to do his bidding. While organizing seminars for the Adventists, he convinced an entire group of people to quit their jobs and form his religious following called The Ant Hill Kids (named for their ant-like hard work). He was no longer Roch to the world, he was ‘Moses.’ It was 1977, and Thériault and his followers formed a commune that was free of sin and stood for equality and unity. Of course, just as with every other cult, the good times would quickly come to an end, which started when the Adventists kicked them out for their weird-ass behavior. Thériault forbid his followers to contact their families, and against Adventist rules, developed a drinking problem. Rules for followers became stricter and stricter, up until the point where the members were restricted from speaking to each other without Thériault present.

The Ant Hill Kids made their living by selling baked goods. However, apart from the baking, life in the sect was a nightmare. Thériault started spying on his followers and when some seemed not devoted enough, he would punish them. If a person wished to leave the sect, Thériault would become enraged: he would hit them with belts or hammers, he would suspend them from the ceiling, he would pluck each and every hair on their body individually, or he would defecate on them.

As the well-being of his seminars decreased, Moses Thériault became more and more convinced of his godly delusions. It became apparent to Roch that the world would end in 1979 and drove his commune into the Canadian wilderness, convinced that for some reason God would skip a chance to destroy Quebec.

1979 came and went, but the world did not – surprisingly – end. Thériault explained this away by saying our world and God’s world run on different timezones. However, this lacking explanation did not stop his followers from romanticizing him and proclaiming him as their absolute leader. In the Canadian wilderness, and later the woods of Ontario, his female concubines bore Thériault 26 children. Roch, as the ultimate fucked up cult leader, would physically and sexually abuse his children and welfare authorities would come and take them away. However, the torture did not stop there for the Ant Hill Kids. When their ‘Pappy’ became angry, he would take on the role of surgeon. The patient would be held down, fully conscious, by the other followers, and Thériault would go to work on them with available kitchen utensils, pliers or a blowtorch. Most followers lost limbs, teeth, fingers and toes to this practice.

There were many other disciplinary practices Thériault used. He forced commune members to break their own legs with sledgehammers, to shoot each other in the shoulders, eating their own – and other’s – feces, insects and rats. He would nail children to a tree and force other children to throw rocks at them. He would forcibly remove teeth and nails. He would burn his followers by making them sit on lit stoves. He would cut off arms and legs without warning. He made them sit naked in the cold and whip and beat them. Nothing was too cruel a punishment.

However, Thériault’s pièce de résistance came when one of his followers complained of pain the abdomen. Thériault forced her to undress, laid her on the kitchen table, punched her in the stomach, performed an enema by shoving a tube up her rectum and filled her up with olive oil. Then he cut her stomach open, ripped out parts of her intestines with his bare hands, and he forced another member to stitch her up. Then, he shoved a tube down her throat and made the other women blow air into it. Unsurprisingly, the woman died the next day. Of course, Thériault as a prophet had the powers of resurrection. This resurrection consisted of drilling a hole in the dead woman’s skull and having every male member ejaculate into it. The woman remained dead.

A ceremony wherein Roch was married to four women at the same time.

Other victims of Roch consisted of two of his own children, one of which he murdered during a failed circumcision, and the other died when Roch left him outside in the middle of a blizzard.

It took the near-death experience of Gabrielle Lavallée to bring to light all these horrible crimes against humanity. Gabrielle had endured blow-torches held to her genitals, eight of her teeth taken out, and a hypodermic needle breaking off in her spine. She had tried to escape, but could not live without the cult and went back. Roch took this as a good reason to cut off one of her fingers, nail her hand to a table and amputate her entire arm. With a hunting knife. Of course, Gabrielle did not see this as enough reason to actually leave. It took Roch amputating parts of her breasts and smashing her head in with an axe for her to actually flee and contact the authorities.

It was 1989, and the Ant Hill Kids were finally free. Thériault was given a life sentence, one he did not complete. In 2011, Roch ‘Moses’ Thériault’s cell-mate walked up to the guard station, handed them a knife and said: “That piece of shit is down on the range. Here’s the knife, I’ve sliced him up.” Thériault was 63 years old, and did not die as he had envisioned; a prophet sent by God to protect his followers. The weirdest part is that even after all that Roch had done wrong, his ‘sane’ followers remained loyal and slaved away to comply to his every whim.

It is easy to say one would never accept being treated this way, but yet these normal, ordinary people endured endless torture from a liar, a mean drunk and a sadist, just because their beliefs matched up with his. It is truly frightening what charisma and religious fervor can make a man.

Kids on the Hill Preschool

SCROLL DOWN

We are Kids on the Hill Preschool. We work hard to provide a safe, secure, and creatively prepared learning environment. Our school provides children with avenues for discovery learning through play. We prepare the young child by simple instruction, example and with loving care to become socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively ready for a bigger and dynamic world.

We believe in providing helpful guidance and tools that will give children a solid foundation to enjoy Kindergarten, have future school success, and for making good life choices.

Kids on the Hill offers a high quality developmental preschool program that educates young children by incorporating the best ideas from a variety of early childhood educational practices and philosophies. It is from this knowledge and understanding of what is best for engaging children in learning through play that we create an environment and curriculum that actively involves the whole child.

Jean Piaget and his developmental approach bring the idea that children learn through play and play is a child’s work. Curriculum is centered on age-appropriate activities that are success-oriented and instill a positive self-esteem.  We borrow from Dr. Maria Montessori’s philosophy regarding an emphasis on the importance of the development of the self in relationship to family, friends and the community.  Rudolph Steiner in his Waldorf approach gives the importance of nature, simplicity and physical surroundings that inspire creativity.  Erik Erikson’s stages of human development guide us to provide a place of trust, security, autonomy and initiative for the child’s optimum social/emotional development.

As early childhood educators, our teachers stay current with research in our field that brings into consideration recent findings on brain development in these early years, literacy, language acquisition, and numeracy learning best practices.  Recent influences of Reggio Emilia have offered us renewed emphasis on aesthetic beauty and the project approach to curriculum planning.

As is an emphasis in our state and federal educational systems at this time, we are guiding young children in their emotional development and social interactions to prepare them as members of a small community of learners who are ready to enter formal schooling with skills for success.

Kids on the Hill blends these philosophies and practices throughout our program and we group the children by age to specifically approach their developmental needs.  Care is given to each age group to promote awareness and responsibility for self, family, friends, community, the environment, different cultures and the development of character.

Kids on the Hill supports the entire family unit and strives to helps families meet the challenges of raising their children.

Our curriculum strives to foster the growth of each individual child’s developmental milestones through inter-connected activities.  A theme or project is used as a framework to thoroughly prepare the learning environment and organize a diverse curriculum that facilitates learning in the following areas:

  • Large Motor skills – Balancing, throwing and catching balls, riding bikes, climbing, skipping, movement for body awareness
  • Small Motor Skills – Use of manipulative items, puzzles, cutting, gluing, drawing, sewing, play dough
  • Language Arts – Children’s literature, puppet shows, storytelling, children’s own stories, creative dramatics, vocabulary enhancement, listening and speaking
  • Art – Exploring as many creative mediums as possible, paint, collage, clay, textures, 3-dimensional projects and cooperative mural making
  • Music – Songs, finger play, instruments, introducing a wide variety of music forms
  • Cognitive Development – Concepts of learning:  sequencing, classification, comprehension, use of prediction and thinking skills
  • Science – Opportunities with natural and physical sciences, hands on experimentation, care of the environment, gardening
  • Life Skills – Sharing, cooperation, manners, following directions, self help and resolving social conflicts

Our curriculum projects may be based on seasonal life, a chosen subject, a holiday or celebration, a story or piece of children’s literature or an emerging interest of the children themselves.  Each teacher plans and implements the curriculum for the particular class and individual children that are in their care.

Our days at school allow for generous periods of time that give children ample time inside and out of doors to choose, plan, and play using their own powers of discovery. Each day the time is balanced between child initiated activities and those that the teacher has planned. The teacher guides and introduces activities that may be new, opening doors of opportunity that have not been explored before.

The day begins with children brought into their classrooms and signed in by a parent or authorized representative.  Having been greeted, they have about an hour and a half of time to interact and play with the activities in the environment that the teacher has prepared for them.  After learning through play there is a time of clean-up and a short gathering for a song, fingerplay, or sharing. Next hands are washed and the children enjoy a healthy snack with one another. After snack, outdoors they go!

Our outdoor play area is really an extension of learning with nature study, gardening, building, running, jumping, climbing, drumming, and opportunities with activities the teachers facilitate. After about an hour and fifteen minutes the children clean up the playground  and come in to our largest classroom for what they call “big circle.” At this time we are all together as a school community for song, story or topical lessons. This is quite adorable as the young twos and threes are just learning to make this circle and often plop right down in the middle of it!

After our big circle gathering the children go back to their own classrooms, wash hands and have lunch with their small learning community of friends. For some children after lunch is the end of their day here at Kids on the Hill and after being signed out they go home.

For others who stay for our afternoon extension time there is now a time of rest. This is about a half hour of quiet time, some children do fall asleep and can sleep until 2:15 if needed. Others are up after that half hour of rest and have a time of afternoon enrichment activities prepared by the teachers. Each afternoon there is a curriculum area emphasized; cooking, literacy, art, science or music and movement.

A time of clean up, washing hands and having a small snack comes near the close of our school day. Lastly, an ending story time is held, families arrive and all children depart for the day.

It is a full, busy day here at Kids on the Hill. Yet we are not rushed, we follow the pace of the children and allow them long periods of play, meaningful gatherings, simple transitions, and find the children do well with a consistent, predictable routine to their day.

Kids on the Hill is located at 5461 Paradise Drive in Corte Madera, just up the hill from The Cove Elementary School. Turn up the drive when you see the sign for Hillside Church of Marin. Our parking lot is at the top of the hill.

From September 03 to 24, 2022, environmental clean-up days were held in educational institutions of all types and types as part of the All-Russian Ecological Clean-up Day “Green Russia-2022” Campaign. The employees of the MBDOU Kindergarten No. 2 “Solnyshko”, Krasny Kholm, Tver Region, did not stand aside either. They put the territory of the preschool educational institution in order and planted new seedlings of fruit and berry bushes in the garden of the kindergarten.

The children of the preparatory group, our little eco-children, also took part in the community work day. They cleaned up trash on the sports court and outside the court. Everyone tried their best. Such activities instill in children patriotic feelings, feelings of respect for nature and pride in their work.

Parents of pupils did not stand aside either. Dads helped put the territory of the kindergarten in order, dismantled the old building. Now our Ecopark, on the territory of which there was an old barn, will delight everyone who comes to our kindergarten.

The “Green Russia” community work day is not only a lesson in caring for nature, but also an opportunity to strengthen parent-child relationships, to unite people for the sake of one goal.

Magic hill. Fairy tale by H. H. Andersen. Children’s Portal Sunshine solnet.ee

Share with your friends, maybe
they need this information!

The nimble lizards kept scurrying along the cracked bark of an old tree. They perfectly understood each other – after all, they talked like a lizard.

– No, just listen to how it rumbles and buzzes inside the magic hill, – said one lizard. – Because of their fuss, I do not close my eyes the second night. It would be better if your teeth hurt, you can’t sleep anyway.

– There’s something going on! said the second lizard. – At night, before the first roosters, they raise the hill on four red pillars, it is properly ventilated, and the forest maidens learn new dances with stomping. Something is up there!

“Yes, yes,” a third confirmed. – I spoke with a familiar earthworm, he just got out of the hill, dug day and night in the ground there and heard a lot of things. He does not see, poor fellow, but to sneak up and eavesdrop – he is a master. They are waiting for guests, distinguished guests, foreigners, but who – this worm did not want to say, or maybe he does not know himself. All will-o’-wisps are ordered to prepare for the torchlight procession. So, is that what they call it? All silverware and gold – and there is plenty of it – are cleaned and exposed to the moonlight.

– What kind of guests are these? all the lizards asked at once. – And what is it that is going on there? Just listen to how it buzzes, how it rumbles!

At that moment, the magic hill opened up, and from there, seeding, an old forest maiden came out. Her back was bare, but otherwise she was dressed quite decently. She was a distant relative of the old forest king, served as his housekeeper and wore an amber heart on her forehead. Her legs just flashed – one-two, one-two! Look how it scuttled – and right into the swamp where the nightjar lived.

“You are invited to the Forest King’s party tonight,” she said. “But first we would like to ask you for one favor: would you agree to deliver the invitations?” After all, you do not arrange receptions at home, so it would not hurt to help others. We are waiting for noble foreigners – trolls, if that tells you anything. And the old forest king does not want to lose face in the dirt.

– Whom to invite? asked the nightjar.

– Well, we invite everyone to the big ball, even people, if only they can talk in their sleep or do at least something else in our line. But it was decided to invite to the first course with a large selection, only the most famous. How much I argued with the forest king! I don’t think ghosts should be called. First of all, you need to invite the sea king with his daughters. True, they do not really like to be on land, but we will put them on wet stones, or else we will come up with something better. Perhaps this time they will not refuse. Then you need to invite all the old trolls of the first category, from those with tails. Then – water and brownies, and besides, I think, it is impossible to bypass the grave pig, the three-legged horse without a head and the church gnome. True, they seem to belong to the clergy, and these people are not of our kind, but, in the end, this is only their work, and by kinship they are closer to us and constantly visit us.

– Good! – said the nightjar and flew off to call the guests.

And the forest maidens were already circling on the magical hill. They learned to dance with a veil woven of mist and moonlight, and to those who have a taste for such things, the dance would seem beautiful.

The Great Hall inside the hill has been cleaned to perfection. The floor was washed with moonlight, and the walls rubbed with witches’ fat, so that they shone like tulips in the sun. The kitchen was bursting with supplies; they roasted frogs on skewers, stuffed snake skins with burdock, prepared salads from toadstools with frog meat, soaked mouse snouts and hemlock. Beer was brought from the swamp, and sparkling wine with saltpeter was delivered directly from the cemetery crypts. Everything was prepared according to the best recipes. For dessert they were going to serve rusty nails and broken glass from church windows.

The old king of the forest ordered to clean his crown with a crushed lead, and not a simple one, but the one used by the first student. To get such a stylus is not an easy task even for the forest king. Curtains were hung in the bedroom and glued with snake saliva. In a word, the smoke was a rocker.

– Well, now to smoke horsehair and pig bristles, and I think – my job is done! said the old forest maiden.

– Daddy, honey! – the youngest daughter pestered the forest king. – Well, tell me, who are these noble foreigners?

– Well! the king replied. – Perhaps you can say. Two of my daughters are going to be brides today. The two of you will have to go to foreign lands. Today, an old Norwegian troll will come to us, the one that lives on the Dovrefjell highlands. How many stone castles he has on the cliffs! He also has a gold mine, better than most people think. His two sons are traveling with him, they must look after their wives. The old troll is a real honest Norwegian, direct and cheerful. We have known him for a long time, we once drank brotherhood. He came here for his wife, now she is no longer alive. She was the daughter of the king of the chalk cliffs from the island of Myo. Oh, and I missed the old troll! True, there is a rumor about sons that they are poorly brought up and big bullies. But maybe these are all just slanders, give them more attention – and they will straighten out. I hope you can instill good manners in them!

– When will they arrive? one of the daughters asked.

– It all depends on the weather and wind! answered the king of the forest. – They want to save on travel expenses, they travel with a passing ship. I advised them to go by land through Sweden, but the old man does not want to hear about it. He lags behind life, that’s what I don’t like about him.

Here two will-o’-the-wisps came running, one trying to overtake the other, and therefore ran first.

– They’re coming! They’re coming! they shouted.

– Let me put on a crown, – said the king of the forest, – let me stand where the moon shines brightest.

The daughters picked up their long veils and bowed to the ground.

In front of them stood a Dovrefjell troll wearing a crown of icy icicles and polished spruce cones. He was wrapped in a bearskin coat and had warm boots on his feet. His sons, on the other hand, went without suspenders and hats – they imagined themselves to be healthy.

– And this is a hill? the younger asked and pointed at the magic hill. “In Norway, we would call it a pit.

– Children! said the old man. – The pit goes down, the hill goes up. What, you don’t have eyes?

The sons said that only one thing surprised them: how they immediately, without preparation, understand the local language.

– Don’t introduce yourself! said the old man. “Then they’ll think that you’re completely ignorant.”

Everyone entered the magic hill. An exquisite society had already gathered there, and so quickly, as if the guests had been blown away by the wind. Everything was arranged for the convenience and complete satisfaction of the guests. The sea people sat at the table in large tubs of water and felt at home. Everyone behaved at the table as expected, only the young Norwegian trolls put their feet on the table: they thought that everything they did looked very nice.

– Come on, plate legs! shouted the Dovrefiel troll, and the brothers, reluctantly, obeyed.

Their pockets were full of fir cones, and they tickled their neighbors with them. And then they pulled off their boots to feel more at ease, and gave them to the ladies to keep.

But their father, the Dovrefjell troll, was completely different. He talked so interestingly about the majestic mountains of Norway, about waterfalls that fall from the rocks in white foam and then rumble like thunder, then sing like an organ. He told how they jump out of the water to meet a stream of salmon collapsing from a height, as soon as they play on a golden water harp, how on bright winter nights sleigh bells ring and boys with burning torches rush across the ice, so transparent that you can see fish that rush in fear scatter from under their feet. Yes, the old man was a master of storytelling! Everyone could see and hear everything he said. Here the sawmill is noisy, here the boys and girls sing songs and dance the halling gopl! And suddenly the old troll, for no reason at all, kissed, as if like an uncle, the old forest maiden. and yet, in fact, he was not related to her by any means; the kiss came out the most real.

It was the turn of the forest maidens to show how they dance, and they performed both simple dances and stomping, and they did it so cleverly! Well, then the artistic dance began, here it was supposed to “forget yourself in a whirlwind of dance”. Wow, how they tossed their legs! Here it was impossible to make out where the beginning, where the end, where the arms, where the legs, everything scattered like chips, so that the three-legged horse without a head became ill, and she had to leave the table.

– W-yes! said the old troll. “Twisting their feet is something they are famously good at. Well, what else can they do, except how to dance, lift their legs and spin like a top?

“Now you will see,” the king of the forest said and called his youngest daughter.

She was the most beautiful of the sisters, tender and transparent, like moonlight. She put a white sliver in her mouth and became invisible – that’s what she knew how to do!

However, the old troll said that he would not like to have a wife who can do such tricks, and his sons are unlikely to like it.

The second sister could walk beside herself, as if she were her own shadow, because trolls have no shadow.

The third had a completely different inclination – she learned to brew beer right next to the swamp. It was she who stuffed the alder snags with fireflies so skillfully.

– Will be a good housewife! said the old troll and winked at her, but he did not drink beer – he did not want to drink too much.

The fourth forest maiden stepped forward, holding a large golden harp in her hands. She hit the strings once – and the guests of honor raised their left legs, because all trolls are left-handed. The second one struck, and everyone was ready to do what she ordered.

– Dangerous woman! – said the old troll, and his sons turned and went out of the hill: they were already tired of all this.

– What can the next one do? asked the old troll.

“I have learned to love everything Norwegian,” said the fifth daughter. “And I will only marry a Norwegian.” I dream of going to Norway.

But the younger sister whispered in the troll’s ear:

– She just learned from a Norwegian song that the Norwegian rocks will stand even when the world ends. So she wants to climb them – she is terribly afraid of dying.

– Ho-ho! said the old troll. – And just something? Well, what can the seventh, and the last one do?

“First, the sixth,” said the king of the forest, he already knew how to count.

But the sixth one would never show herself.

“All I know how to do is tell the truth,” she repeated, “and no one likes that. I’d rather sew a shroud for myself.

And then the turn came to the seventh, the last daughter. What could she do? Oh, this one knew how to tell fairy tales, and besides, as much as she liked.

“Here are my five fingers,” said the Dovrefjell troll. Tell me a story about each.

The forest maiden took his hand and began to talk, so much so that he only rolled with laughter. And when it was the turn of the ring finger, who wore a gold ring around his waist, as if he knew that the engagement was imminent, the old troll said:

– Hold my hand tight. She’s yours. I take you as my wife.

But the forest maiden replied that she had not yet told about the ring finger and the little finger.

– And we will hear about them in the winter, – answered the old troll, – we will listen about everything: about the Christmas tree, and about the birch, and about the gifts of the evil huldra fairy, and how the frost cracks, we will listen. That’s why I take you with me, so that you tell me fairy tales, no one here knows how to do this. We will sit in a cave in front of a blazing fire of pine wood and drink honey from the ancient golden horn of the Norwegian kings. The merman gave me several of these horns. We will sit by the fire, and Garba, the good spirit of the pastures, will visit us. He will sing you the songs that Norwegian girls sing when they graze cattle in the mountains. That will be fun! The salmon will dance in the waterfall, start beating against the stone walls, but he will not get to us. Yes, believe me, there is nothing better than good old Norway … And where are the boys?

Really, where are the boys? They rushed across the field and extinguished the wandering lights, which were sedately lined up and were ready to start the torchlight procession.

– Stop slacking off! I have found a mother for you, and you can marry your aunts!

But the sons replied that they preferred to make speeches and drink for brotherhood, but they were reluctant to marry. And they made speeches, drank brotherhood and turned their glasses upside down to show that everything was drunk to the bottom. Then they pulled off their clothes and went to bed right on the table – they did not differ in shyness.
