Rating of countries in the world by level of education – Humanitarian portal

The Education Index is a composite indicator of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) that measures the achievements of a country in terms of the educational attainment of its population. The index is considered as one of the key indicators of social development and is used to calculate the Human Development Index, issued as part of a special series of reports of the United Nations (UN) on human development. nine0003

Before 2010, the Index was measured by combining the actual adult literacy rate and the combined enrollment rate of the entire population in primary, secondary and tertiary education:

Adult literacy rate (2/3 weight).
Index of the combined share of students receiving primary, secondary and higher education (1/3 of the weight).

These two dimensions of education were combined in the final Index, which was standardized as numerical values from 0 (minimum) to 1 (maximum). It is generally accepted that developed countries should have a minimum score of 0.8, although many of them had a score of 0.9or higher.

Since 2010, the Index has been measured by combining the mean years of schooling for adults with the expected years of schooling for students under the age of 25, each weighted equally:

Expected Years of Schooling – The number of years of schooling a student is expected to attend school or other educational institution (1/2 weight).
Average years of schooling (years) is the average number of years of schooling actually completed by a student aged 25 and over (1/2 weight). nine0008

Until 2019, when determining a place in the world ranking, all countries were ranked on the basis of the Educational Level Index, where the first place corresponded to the highest value of this indicator, and the last to the lowest. Since 2020, a separate rating ranking the countries of the world according to the composite Education Level Index has not been released.

The education level index, although it is a fairly universal indicator, has a number of limitations. In particular, it does not reflect the quality of education itself, which in some cases can be very low or significantly limited. It also does not fully show the difference in the availability of education due to differences in age requirements and duration of education. The International Association for School Evaluation has published the results of a new study on reading quality and text comprehension among 10-year-olds in 45 regions of the world. Russian children were recognized as the most literate, writes Kommersant . However, Washingtone Profile has other data : the most fundamental knowledge is possessed by young residents of Finland, while Russia and the United States are included in the group of countries whose schoolchildren showed “below average” results.

The Association has been conducting a study of the quality of reading and the level of understanding of the text among students from different countries since 2001, every five years. The current data is based on the results of the 2006 academic year. The purpose of such a study is not only to compare the literacy levels of schoolchildren from different countries, but also to find ways to improve the process of learning to read and increase literacy, to analyze different education systems and identify positive experiences

The study itself was conducted by the Center for International Studies at Boston College, Massachusetts, with the support of educational authorities from the respective countries of the world in 45 regions. Experts tested the ability of 215,000 primary school students to read correctly, understand what they read and use the information received.

The results of the study indicate that in recent years there has been a steady downward trend in interest in the book as such, children prefer to spend time at the computer. And this trend is especially noticeable in developed countries. For example, Sweden, which in 2001 ranked 1st, moved down to 10th, England and Scotland – from 3rd to 19th.th and from 14th to 26th places, respectively. The United States in the ranking were not far from England – in 18th place.

More than 37% of the surveyed schoolchildren reported that they spend at least three hours a day at the computer. At the same time, only 32% of children read program literature every day and 40% of children read entertainment literature. The authors of the study emphasize that in those countries where parents are actively involved in the lives of children, they themselves love books and read to children, the level of literacy is much higher. nine0003

And the latest study showed that there were more such families compared to 2001. In addition, the study found that girls, on average, read much better than boys, but only half of the students actually enjoy reading.

Alexander Adamsky, rector of the Eureka Institute for Educational Policy Problems, believes that the results of the study demonstrate “a serious breakthrough for elementary school in Russia”: “The reason is that it gradually moved away from the practice of stupid memorization and repetition – until recently, teachers mainly counted how many words a student can read in a minute. Now the emphasis is on developmental programs – children are massively taught to understand and interpret texts, the ability to find information, draw conclusions. ” nine0003

Meanwhile, according to the expert, the indicators of the junior school make its separation from the senior school more prominent. “Today it has turned into a factory for the preparation of applicants, the emphasis is on memorizing the huge amounts of information necessary for entering a university. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has published a knowledge rating of 15-year-old schoolchildren from 57 countries.
