“CHILDREN’S PLACE”. STUDY OF ONE OF THE MOST LOST-STUDYED BODIES. • EVO Medical Center

How the placenta adapts to low levels of oxygen and nutrients during pregnancy.

Placenta (“baby place”) is the most important and absolutely unique organ that exists only during pregnancy, which connects two organisms – the mother and the fetus, providing it with the necessary nutrients and oxygen. The placenta develops only during pregnancy and, so to speak, serves as the lungs, kidneys, intestines and liver for the growing child in the womb, allows him to breathe and eat, while releasing hormones and throwing out waste. nine0007

Today, the placenta remains one of the least studied human organs. The proper functioning of the placenta is vital, as this is what affects the outcome of the pregnancy + the health of the mother + the health of the child throughout his life. Researchers at the University of Cambridge set out to fill the gap and, in the first study of its kind, found that the placenta regulates how much oxygen and nutrients it transports to babies during difficult pregnancies. The new study focused on the analysis of placental mitochondria, and it is hoped that the results will contribute to the emergence of “tests” for the correct functioning of the mother’s placenta. nine0007

On January 18, 2019, the official publication of the American Academy of Sciences (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) presented data from the work of scientists from St John’s College (University of Cambridge) under the leadership of Dr Amanda N Sferruzzi-Perri that mitochondria in the placenta are capable of adapt and compensate for the adverse effects of the environment.

Mitochondria is one of the most important components of a living cell, in simple terms, it is the energy station of the cell. Their activity is based on the oxidation of organic compounds and the generation of electrical potential (the energy released during the breakdown of the ATP molecule) for the implementation of muscle contraction. The work of the mitochondria consists in the stepwise transfer of hydrogen electron energy between metal atoms present in groups of protein complexes of the respiratory chain (electron transport chain of proteins), where each subsequent complex has a higher affinity for the electron, attracting it until the electron is connected to the molecular oxygen, which has the highest electron affinity. Each time an electron is passed through the circuit, energy is released, which accumulates in the form of an electrochemical gradient, then is realized in the form of muscle contraction and heat release. The series of oxidative processes in the mitochondria, which allows the transfer of the energy potential of the electron, is called “intracellular respiration” or “respiratory chain”, since the electron is transferred along the chain from atom to atom until it reaches its final goal – the oxygen atom. Mitochondria require oxygen to carry energy during the oxidation process. nine0007

In a study on mice, British scientists found that the placenta regulates the amount of oxygen and nutrients that reach the fetus during difficult pregnancies. Focusing on the analysis of small areas of placental cells – mitochondria, they noticed that the latter can change their function to support the needs of the placenta itself and the rapidly growing fetus during a healthy pregnancy and in cases where the pregnancy takes place in a less favorable environment. “We found that in the placenta, mitochondria have a remarkable ability to adapt and compensate for environmental influences, such as women living in areas with low oxygen content at high altitude (in particular, at altitudes above 2500 m and limited oxygen levels in Bolivia, Peru, Tibet , Ethiopia, and others. It is estimated that over 140 million people live), in the absence of a quality and healthy diet and proper diet during pregnancy. nine0007

In these environmental conditions, there is a high risk of pregnancy complications, increased risks of miscarriage, preeclampsia, fetal growth retardation, and in 10% of cases there is a limitation of fetal growth, which is a strong marker of potential problems with the child, including stillbirth, death in the first weeks of life, increased risk of being born with cerebral palsy, behavioral and developmental problems, neurological disorders, and chronic diseases later in life (heart disease, obesity, and diabetes). nine0007

Scientists simulated “hypoxic conditions” in the lab and found that mitochondria in the placenta determine the most efficient way to use oxygen and nutrients so that even during difficult pregnancies there is enough for the fetus.
