Planet Earth for children – a story about planet Earth for preschoolers

We are earthlings. All the countries, cities, forests and oceans known to us are located on one planet – Earth. It belongs to the solar system. The solar system consists of eight planets revolving around one star – the Sun. In addition to the Earth, the system includes Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Earth is the third planet in distance from the Sun. And the only one of all the planets in our system that has life. Why?

Scientists believe that there are many conditions necessary for the emergence of life on the planet. This is the temperature regime – not too hot and not too cold – and the presence of water, and the atmosphere, in which there should be a number of certain elements, and much more. No planet in the solar system, with the exception of the Earth, does not meet all the requirements. Mercury is too hot, Uranus is very cold, Venus has no atmosphere at all. But our planet seems to have been created in order for life to arise on it.

Our today’s article will help you introduce your child to our amazing planet, tell about the history of the Earth, its place in space, structure and other interesting facts.

Description of the planet Earth for children

The Earth is not the largest of the planets in the solar system. On the contrary, it is one of the smallest – only Mercury and Venus are smaller than it. But at the same time, the radius of the Earth is 6,371 kilometers.

The earth is almost perfectly round. It is slightly flattened at the poles. Therefore, two different radii of the Earth are often called: equatorial (in the middle of the planet) – 6378 km and polar (at the “ends”) – 6357 km.

In ancient times, people did not know that the Earth was spherical. They imagined something like a round flat plate. Only after the sailors went around the Earth and returned to the same place, it became clear that our planet is a ball. Now there is no doubt about it: we have seen photographs of the Earth taken from space many times. In many pictures, by the way, the seas, mountains and even large cities are clearly visible.

Earth’s rotation

The Earth, like other planets of the solar system, performs a complex rotation: around the Sun and around its axis (an imaginary line passing through the center of the planet). Moreover, the Earth moves around the Sun not in a circle, but in an ellipse – this is such an elongated circle.

It is due to this rotation that day and night come on Earth, and summer gives way to winter.

Everything is clear with the time of day: day is on that part of the planet that is currently turned to the Sun, night is on the opposite side. The Earth makes a complete revolution around its axis in approximately 24 hours – during this time a day passes on Earth.

The seasons are more difficult. The Earth makes a complete revolution around the Sun in 365 days. Many people think that the change of seasons is related to the distance of the Earth from the Sun. But it is not so. The angle of inclination of the Earth relative to the Sun affects the air temperature much more strongly. The fact is that the axis of the Earth (around which the rotation takes place) is inclined relative to the Sun by more than 23 degrees. And during rotation, the sun’s rays fall on the Earth in different ways. If it’s straight, summer is coming; if it’s at an angle, it’s getting colder. The more slope, the colder.

The equator gets the most direct rays, because there is almost always even warm weather there, and the extreme points of the Earth – the poles – are so strongly inclined that the sun slides over the surface and does not warm the earth. Therefore, in the Arctic and Antarctic it is cold even in summer.

How did the planet Earth appear?

A child will surely have a question about how our planet was formed. Scientists can only make assumptions about this – they have no exact answer.

The main hypothesis is that 4.6 billion years ago, the Sun arose from a huge gas cloud, and already under its influence, the planets of the solar system, including the Earth, formed, “sintered” from cosmic dust around. At the time, it bore little resemblance to the planet we live on. Most likely, it was a fireball, which, as it cooled, turned into a stone desert – without water, atmosphere and, of course, signs of life.

Gradually, under the influence of various processes that took place in the depths, various substances rose to the surface. Some turned into water, others participated in the formation of the atmosphere. It happened slowly: scientists believe that the formation of the oceans and the surface took more than 200 million years.

What is the planet Earth made of?

It will be interesting for a child to learn about the structure of our planet. The earth, if you imagine it in a section, consists of several layers.

In the very center is the core, solid inside and liquid outside. Its composition is metal alloys, mainly iron and nickel. The core occupies most of the diameter of the earth, it is the size of the planet Mars. Distinguish between inner and outer core. This part of the earth is very hot, and the deeper, the hotter. It is impossible to reach such a level, but, according to scientists, the temperature inside the core can be higher than on the Sun – up to 7 thousand degrees.

The mantle is located above the core. This is the most important layer of the Earth – and the largest (over 80% of the total volume). It is here that the largest part of the substances that make up the Earth is concentrated. These are mainly iron compounds, but the structure of the layer is not entirely solid: the mantle is rather viscous, so it is often said that the earth’s crust “floats” on the mantle.

The earth’s crust is the upper part of solid earth. Compared to other layers, it is thin. There is continental and oceanic crust. The layer of continental crust reaches 40-50 kilometers, and under the oceans – 5-10. The crust makes up about 1% of the Earth’s mass.

The Earth’s crust and the upper part of the mantle are called the lithosphere.

And the hydrosphere – the entire water part of the Earth’s surface, which includes the World Ocean, waters and glaciers, groundwater.

It turns out that for a surface covered with water, the hydrosphere is located above the lithosphere.

Even higher is the atmosphere. This is no longer part of the planet, but its gaseous shell, which is located above the Earth and rotates with it.

The composition of the Earth’s atmosphere, and more specifically, the content of oxygen in it, played a key role in the emergence of life on Earth.

In addition to oxygen, nitrogen and other gases are present in the Earth’s atmosphere. And thanks to the ozone layer in the atmosphere, the Earth is protected from most of the ultraviolet radiation from the Sun.

How life originated and developed on the planet

For millions of years the planet Earth remained uninhabited. Scientists have found confirmation that living organisms appeared on Earth about 3-4 billion years ago, in the pre-Cambrian period of the Earth’s development. Of course, these are not the animals to which we are accustomed, but the simplest – microorganisms.

More developed animals and plants appeared later, during what is called the Phanerozoic. This period is divided into 3 epochs: Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic. During the Paleozoic, invertebrates, insects, and fish appeared; The Mesozoic gave us dinosaurs, and the Cenozoic gave us mammals. This happened more than 65 million years ago, and it is still believed that mammals are the highest stage of development for living organisms. Man is a mammal.

Continents and oceans

71% of the Earth’s territory is covered with water. Land exists in the form of six continents: Eurasia; Africa; North and South America, Antarctica and Australia. The largest continent is Eurasia, the smallest is Australia.

There are four oceans on Earth. They are interconnected (this is the so-called World Ocean), but at the same time they differ greatly in temperature, bottom features, and salinity. The Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest, the second largest is the Atlantic, the third is the Indian (compared to the Atlantic, it is smaller, but deeper). And the smallest is the Arctic Ocean. It is also the coldest, because it is located near the North Pole and is partially covered with ice.

Four climatic zones are distinguished on our planet – these are territories that seem to encircle the planet. In one belt all over the Earth, there are approximately the same conditions for life: temperature, humidity, precipitation.

The equatorial belt runs along the very center of the Earth. Here the weather almost does not change during the year – summer, it rains and about +25 degrees.

There are two tropical zones, they are located on both sides of the equatorial zone. It is dry and warm here, but the difference between summer and winter is already obvious: in winter it can be about +15 degrees, but in summer – up to +50.

The climate with cold winters and warm summers is familiar to us. It is characteristic of temperate zones. There are also two of them, and they are located after the tropical in the direction from the equator.

The Arctic belts are located at the Earth’s poles. It is coldest here, especially in winter. But even in summer the temperature rarely rises above zero.

Of course, this division is conditional. The climate does not change dramatically when moving from one climate zone to another. There are transitional poles: two sub-equatorial, two sub-tropical and two sub-polar, where the characteristics of neighboring poles appear. If you move smoothly from one zone to another, changes in the weather are practically not noticeable. But if you fly by plane, the difference is felt.

The weather in different parts of the Earth depends not only on the distance from the equator, but also on the relief. The main landforms on Earth are mountains and plains.

In terms of area, plains occupy most of the land. We can see it on a map or a globe. None of them plains and mountains, depending on the height, are indicated in green, yellow or brown. The highest mountains are dark brown (Himalayas, Andes, Caucasus).

The highest point on land in the world – Mount Chomolungma in the Himalayas – 8848 meters above sea level. And the lowest is in the ocean, this is the Mariana Trench (11022 meters below sea level).

The Moon is a satellite of the Earth

Scientists believe that the Moon was formed after a large space object fell to the Earth. A piece broke away from the Earth, which fell into its orbit and became its satellite.

Now the Moon not only illuminates the Earth at night (by the way, it does not shine by itself, but by the reflected light of the Sun), but also influences earth processes. Considering many factors and agreeing on our decision in order not to make a mistake, with I.R. we went to create our base on Earth in the mountains of Tibet, in 1500 from the birth of Christ. Considering the local conditions and our intentions, we immediately began organizing the construction of a fortress-monastery.

To speed up the whole process of our arrangement, I had a seemingly insane idea to conduct an experiment with one of the aspects of the universe – time loops and the combination of cause-and-effect events in a certain space-time interval. The idea may be bold, but in my preliminary opinion it is absolutely safe, because I will be able to observe the result of the experiment before I start it, and the result can be ordered at any subsequent moment until it is completed.


Just the same landed next to our apparatus. We were ready for this event, because I planned it and informed everyone in order to exclude possible inadequate actions.

A decent company unloaded from the second vehicle, headed not by my double, as expected, but by Bob’s double. Considering my silent surprise, he explained:

– Gleb, in thirty-four minutes another device will arrive, but with your double.

I asked a stupid question out of confusion:

– How do you know?

Bob just tactfully kept silent. For the second time, he became a participant in a segment of the same time space, but not of the same causal events, which was later confirmed. After a pause added:

My and Bob’s doppelgangers filled us up with a rather motley company. With the help of our same devices, they carried out the installation, tying ready-made blocks to them and delivering them to the right place.

– Gleb, – I turned to my double, – when we fly away, it will become harder for you to cope with the construction.

– We manage to do the most laborious task with your help, the main thing is already the site, the foundation of the monastery and practically its first floor.

Playground was not the right word. We cut off the top of the mountain and, having made three large niches in it for our devices, with their help removed this top to the side. A huge plateau was formed for the construction of our monastery. It now flanked a neighboring, much larger mountain with a waterfall now flowing down next to our plateau, which would more than provide for our water needs.

– What about food? – I did not give up, referring to the products produced by our devices for our entire population.

– Gleb, if you noticed, we have developed a sufficient number of goats to provide ourselves with meat and milk. And believe me, I see no point in your presence here.

— Well, we’re leaving tomorrow, — I gave up.


Having mastered certain telepathic abilities, we could, to some extent, correct the causal relationships that concerned our entire team, but each of us individually could not yet track the course of our own causal processes in order to prevent their consequences.

It seemed that something that could not happen happened – Bob died. He was accidentally crushed during the installation of huge stone blocks. I was more struck not by the fact of the death of a friend, but by the paradox of what happened. In search of an answer to the death of Boris, we looked with hope at my double. He looked at me and said:

– One of those events happened that I tried to avoid by hurrying you away. I mean, this was not the case in Bob and I’s previous presence here.

— And what should we do now, — I asked him.

– Let’s think, but not in a hurry. Bob’s double is with us, where did he come from then. Apparently, from other causal events, not from those in which we are, or in our circumstances, we will be able to return him or another of him and send him to make a loop in time.

— We can return him by sending a device to the past before his death, — I added to my double.

– But I’m not sure that that Bob, from other cause-and-effect events, but the fact that they are different is clear, because he was not taken away from us, and no one flew for him, he will agree to leave his field of events and go to ours, because he will no longer have to die from an accident, ”continued my double.
