Iowa, USA – travel guide Planet of Hotels

Des Moines is the capital of the state, a major transport hub, financial and commercial center of Iowa. The food and canning industries are very well developed here. In 2010, Forbes magazine named it the best city in the country to start a career for young professionals. The main attraction of the capital, as well as the entire state, is the Capitol building, built in 1871-1884. This is the pinnacle of the skill of American architects of the 19th century, a unique structure with as many as 5 domes – no other similar building in the United States has such a number. There are several major museums in the city.
Among the most notable are the State Historical Museum, the Des Moines Art Center, and the Museum of Science and Industry. In addition, the city has a large zoo “Blanc Park”, Papajon sculpture garden and a luxurious gray lake park. Another attraction is the large Botanical Garden (Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden), opened in 2013. It presents many interesting projects – conceptual exhibitions that emotionally display various areas of art and pop culture with the help of living plant compositions. Members of the popular nu metal band Slipknot, most of whom were born and raised here, consider Des Moines “America’s black hole”, but this statement is hardly true. Despite its status as a major industrial center, it continues to be a classic city of the American hinterland – cozy, green and friendly.

Cedar Rapids is Iowa’s second largest city and the art capital of the eastern part of the state. First of all, it is known for its unusual nickname – the City of the Five Seasons. It is believed that in addition to the generally accepted seasons, there is also a fifth – the time when you can enjoy the other four. The business center even has a sculpture symbolizing this funny statement. And this is true – the climate in the region is very mild and pleasant throughout the year. The most popular place among tourists is the Brucemore mansion. This ancient building is included in the list of objects of historical importance of the National Trust. Other cultural sites include the famous Paramount Theatre, Science Station Science Museum, Grant Wood Studios, the City Symphony Orchestra building and the Cedar Rapids Art Museum. Of the architectural sights, it should be noted the unusually beautiful city hall, located on the island of Meis.

Iowa City has long been considered the territorial capital of the state. In 1842, the Old Capitol was even built here in an unusual style for America – the Greek revival. In 1857, Des Moines received this status, while Iowa City remained an important center for the settlement of emigrants (this was facilitated by the presence of a railway station). There are not many attractions in the city, and most of them are connected with the university. For example, the Museum of Natural History, founded in 1858 and located on campus. It is known for its collections of mammals, birds, Native American artifacts, and ancient stone tools. In the city center, tourists are sure to visit the Hamburg Inn No. 2 diner – American presidents dropped in here, and the merits of the establishment were touted on TV shows. And now every resident of the state knows where you can buy the most delicious hamburgers in the USA. Another Iowa City attraction is the unusual Englert Theatre, open at 1912 year. It not only hosts performances, dance and comedy performances, but also gives lectures to students, arranges many other cultural events. There are no theaters of this kind not only in Iowa City, but throughout the state.

Davenport is located on the banks of the Mississippi River. In the first half of the 20th century, he had an ambivalent reputation. On the one hand, its eastern part (Bucktown) became famous for its bars that illegally sold alcohol during the Prohibition era. Thanks to this fact, Davenport became known throughout the country as “the most vicious city in America.” On the other hand, it won the image of the cultural center of the United States, thanks to a large number of immigrants from Germany. After all, art and music have always been an important and integral part of the German way of life. At 19In 1616, the famous Tri City Symphony Orchestra was formed in the city, numerous “opera houses” were very popular, including the famous The Burtis Opera House. The country’s first municipal art gallery was opened in Davenport, and stars such as Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbeck (now called the Summer Garden) performed at the Bucktown Art Center.
