Open-Ended Questions For Kids

Often when we talk to our kids, we are met with one-word answers, like “fine,” “Whatever,” “Sure,” “I don’t know.

So the trick to expanding the conversation with our kids is to ask open-ended questions.

Check This Out!

I love this article on how to use questions to further your child’s development.

How to Ask Open Ended Questions

Open-ended questions are really more about how you phrase a question. For example, you could say:

“How was school today?”

…and be met with the answer, “Fine.”

Or you could say, “What was your favorite part of the day?”

It’s hard to answer that with a one-word answer. Although, you might get met with an “I don’t know.”

In that case, you will need to expand on the conversation. (And you can also expand on the conversation even if you get met with a reasonable answer, as the adult, it’s our job to keep the flow going). It could look something like this:

“You don’t know what your favorite part of the day was? I get it! It’s hard to pick just one thing. Did you prefer reading or math class today?”

Once they start talking, you can continue, “I agree, reading is much more fun than math; what is your favorite book? When I was young, my favorite book was Charlotte’s Web.”

You can continue leading the conversation this way.

Open-ended questions help your child:

  • find solutions
  • think deeply
  • increase connection.

Don’t forget to let your child know you ARE interested in what they are saying. Use leading phrases such as, “I’d love to hear about…” or “I find this so fascinating, tell me more…”

Pro Tips for Starting Open-Ended Questions

If you’re feeling a little unsure about how to use open-ended questions, here is a tiny cheat sheet of opening phrases:

  • “Tell me about that time…
  • “What should we do about.…”
  • “I find this fascinating, tell me more…”
  • “Why do you think…”
  • “I’d love to hear about…”
  • “What do you prefer…”

Closed Questions for Kids Versus Open-Ended Questions

There is definitely a time and a place for closed questions for kids. Think, “would you prefer chicken or fish for dinner?” or, “did you hit your sister?” Be sure that you have the time and attention for the conversation when you initiate an open-ended question conversation with your kids.

How to Engage Children in Conversations

  • Connect Before You Direct– Before asking your child to participate, squat to your child’s eye level, and engage your child in eye-to-eye contact to get their attention. You can say, “I need your eyes” or, “I need your ears.” (Use their name!)
  • Reduce Distractions – Turn off the T. V and put any iPhone or tablets away. Everyone in the family should come into the present moment. Why not even lock up the electronics for a set period of time?
  • Don’t Interrupt – This is very important. When someone is speaking you might have an urge to butt in and share a funny story or something that pops into your head. But please, wait your turn and give everyone a chance to share and talk.
  • Follow-up – Wait until whoever is speaking is finished and then respond with a question or a comment. You could respond, “Wow that’s really interesting, I didn’t know that about you.” I’d encourage parents to also answer the questions and encourage their kids to ask follow-up questions.
  • Show Respect – Always, always be kind and respectful
  • Listen & Respond – Show the person speaking that you are listening by nodding, smiling and looking at them.

My favorite two questions to ask kids

I like to ask these two questions every day before bed:

  1. What is one thing that made you happy today?
  2. What is one thing you are grateful for today?

Now THAT was a lot of questions!

These silly questions for kids are great for prompting funny answers from your child and of course for learning more about how your child perceives their world. I know you’ll find some funny questions to ask toddlers in here as well.

You can use these interesting questions as conversation starters after school, an ice breaker on car rides, or when you find yourself waiting in a line. If you teach, you might like to have funny questions to ask students.

I’m always surprised at how my kids perceive their world. Here’s a few funny kid quotes and antics from my home.

      Funny Kid Stories

Xander (looking at his little sister): What’s on her face mom?
Me: I don’t know, probably food.
Ruby: It’s my beak! I have a beak right here! (Pointing to her mouth and nose)

She does eat like a bird. LOL

      Here’s another one.

Me: The dog was happy when I gave him water, and he licked me! Xander: Why?
Me: Because that’s how dogs say thank you!
Xander: Can I have a drink?
Me: Sure! (I feel him lick my shirt) …Did you just lick me???

Kids are weird. When they aren’t licking me, they are licking the window. Is there anything that can prepare you for the oddities of parenting?

      And lastly….

      Ruby: Mommy, I’m Sick!
      Me: Oh no! What’s wrong?
Ruby: I’m not wrong. I’m sick!

I love how children can take a normal conversation and turn it on its head! Normal every day life is so funny with little ones around! You never know how they are going to answer a simple question!

      Make Memories with Your Kids!

It’s cool how a fun question can start a meaningful conversation. My favorite part is seeing how my kids answer tough questions with a great deal of thought.

As a parent, I find that sometimes all it take is the right questions to get a conversation started with both younger kids (or even an older child in high school!)

I hope you find a great question to spark conversation with your kids and of course, I hope you found some parenting humor and some laughs!

Now go and create some memories of your own with your kids! I dare you!

10 most embarrassing children’s questions and how to answer them

About the nature of children’s curiosity and how parents do not look stupid when answering the question “Why am I not a pony?”.

You can listen to this article. If it’s more convenient for you, turn on the podcast:

      Why do children ask questions

Every day, on the way to kindergarten, my daughter and I meet several kids who manage to go through the entire cycle of learning about the world: a strong interest in some phenomenon → asking parents → response silence → loss of interest.

Children’s curiosity peaks at age four. By this point, parents often feel hopeless, desperate to find answers to all the whys. According to Kids ask a staggering 73 questions every day / South West News Service, curious kids ask an average of 73 questions a day. Moreover, the “interrogation” of parents sometimes begins at 6 in the morning and does not stop until the evening sleep.

Parents do not answer half of these questions. And a third of the 1,500 mothers and fathers surveyed in the UK said they found the questioning tiresome. But four out of ten noticed that they were proud of the curiosity of their children.

The author of the study, psychologist Sam Wass, says that as a child grows up, it is natural to show interest in the world around them. Adults forget what they were like in childhood and often do not realize how important their answers are.

According to P. L. Harris. Trusting what you’re told: How children learn from others by Harvard University psychologist Paul Harris, children ask about 40,000 questions between two and five years of age. A Study B. N. Frazier, S. A. Gelman, H. M. Wellman. Preschoolers’ search for explanatory information within adult-child conversation / Child Development at the University of Michigan found that kids aren’t asking so many questions to annoy their parents (although sometimes it’s hard to believe). They want explanations for why things are the way they are. For a baby who is just getting to know the world, everything around is a stunning discovery. And the little researcher needs to somehow understand this.

      Natalia Presler

      Psychologist, psychotherapist.

Answers give the child a sense of acceptance and security, a reliable rear. If a parent brushes off children’s questions, the child feels unimportant, unnecessary, uninteresting. And sometimes a child’s question is a way to talk about what worries him. By answering the question, the parent gets the opportunity to help the child, to understand him better, to learn about his childhood difficulties. This creates a trusting relationship, contributes to the development of emotional intelligence of both the child and the parent.

What do children want to know? Here are the most common questions I hear from my daughter or along the “question road” to kindergarten.

The most popular questions for babies

      1. Where do babies come from?

      How to answer

The main thing here is how old the child asking the question is. Because for each age a certain amount of detail is allowed. It is also important to understand that today’s children are aware individuals, and you will not satisfy them with legends about storks and cabbages. The approximate correct answer is: “Mom and I liked each other, got married, and soon you appeared in the tummy. You grew up, got bigger and bigger, and then you were born.” This is for a 3 year old. According to age, add or remove the required number of details.

      What not to do

Describe everything in colors. “I remember that cold winter evening when my mother and her friend and I…” – that’s not the way to say it. Limit yourself to talking about what the child asked. Psychologists state N. Pancsofar, L. Vernon-Feagans et al. Family relationships during infancy and later mother and father vocabulary use with young children / Early Childhood Research Quarterly that the issue of father-mother relationships is so important for a baby that it even affects vocabulary. Therefore, it is not necessary to tell everything in the smallest details.

      Personal experience

In the daughter’s case, it was even more specific: “How did they make me?” Trying not to think that I am a father who wrote a book about parenting, and frantically recalling all the articles we read on this topic, my wife and I were honored with an answer in the style of “dad and mom loved each other and you appeared.” Bingo!

      2. Will I die?

      How to answer

The main thing here is not to panic and understand that the fear of death in children is a normal phenomenon. Most likely, the baby asks the question because of this fear. Therefore, you should not make a taboo out of the topic L. Petranovskaya. Whether to talk with children about the tragic / ludmilapsyholog / LiveJournal.

An approximate answer is: “You are the most beloved person in the world for me, I wish you only the best. But we all, animals and humans, get old and die. It just won’t happen any time soon.”

      What not to do

Hide and hush up the fact of death. But you don’t even need to go to the cemetery specifically. Do not speak to the child about death first, follow him and wait for the question.

      Personal experience

Daughter is afraid of old age and death. She is sad to think that she or her parents will become old. Therefore, we bypass the question of our own death. She doesn’t ask, and I don’t dare to talk about it.

      3. What happens after death?

      How to answer

Until the age of three or four, children think in images, so the answer to this question will be quite figurative Talking to children about death / Clinical Center Patient Education Materials / U. S. National Institutes of Health. For example: “People after death sit on a cloud and watch us.” No matter how trite it may sound. With older children, alternative versions can be discussed.

      Do’s and Don’ts

Describe the technical details of death. The process of burial and burial should not be described in bright colors, since the baby’s psyche may not be able to cope with such pictures.

      Personal experience

To my daughter’s question, I answered: “Nothing.” The situation was saved by the grandmother with a story about angels who carry people to heaven. True, now the daughter is interested in whether Pushkin and Lenin are sitting there.

      4. Who do you love more, me or your brother (sister, mother, father)?

      How to answer

Most likely, this question attracts attention of the child. Psychologists Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish, who gained worldwide fame as experts in communicating with children (their works have been translated into 24 languages) in the book “Brothers and Sisters. How to help your children live together, ”it is advised to convince the baby that you love each in your own way.

Tell him: “I love you and your brother (sister, mom, dad) very much. It’s just that this is a different love – for a mother, daughter, son, because it’s impossible to love everyone equally, we are all individual.

Leveling often offends the child. And also use the principle of the answer question. Ask at the end: “What do you think?” This way you will know the motives of the child. Perhaps he was offended by a specific situation where you are wrong. Sometimes kids give funny answers Kimmel Asks Kids “Who Do You Love More… Mom or Dad?” / Jimmy Kimmel Live / YouTube.

      What not to do

Single out someone. Don’t say that someone in the family deserves more of your love than the child. No transgression cancels the unconditional love of a parent. On the other hand, there is no need to exalt the baby to the skies and emphasize his exclusivity. Opinion J. Taylor. Parenting: Don’t praise your children! / Psychology Today experts, this can only hurt.

      Personal experience

I try to pay attention to everyone (even the cat), so this question rarely arises in our family. Basically, when we find out: we have a mother or a daughter. Usually the daughter agrees to the role of her beloved princess.

      5. Does Santa Claus (God) exist?

      How to answer

This is exactly the case when you can honestly admit to the kid that you do not know the answer. Something like this: “No one knows for sure whether Santa Claus (God) exists. Some people believe in it, others don’t.” You can also give the example of relatives or acquaintances with other points of view.

      Do’s and Don’ts

Look for the “correct” answer. For this question, it doesn’t exist. Do not forget about tolerance, difference of views and the right to opinion.

      Personal experience

One of our popular routes lies past the church. While I tried to avoid answering questions about God, my daughter continued to ask them. In the end, I answered like this: “This is the castle of those who believe in God. But there are those who do not believe. This is a right and a private matter for everyone.” Since then there have been no more questions. (A moment of pride.)

      6. Why do you and your father (mother) fight?

      How to answer

If a child asks this question, it is likely that he or she has already witnessed a parental argument and feels J. Reynolds, C. Houlston et al. Parental conflict: Outcomes and interventions for children and families Therefore, you should answer something like this: “You and I also sometimes quarrel when we cannot agree on something, but we always put up. The same goes for mom/dad. Forgive us for this quarrel.”

      What not to do

Show up and insult each other in the presence of children. If you blame or call the other parent for something in front of the child, the baby will look for the causes of the conflict in himself. Because he has not yet learned to separate himself from his father and mother.

      Personal experience

In response, I always remember a scene from the movie “Boyhood” and say in the words of the hero: “You also quarrel with your friend, but you love each other, don’t you? It’s just that you don’t always agree on everything, just like my mother and I.”

      7. Why is the sky blue (why is the grass green, where does the rainbow come from)?

      How to answer

You need to understand that if the answer itself is important for adults, then for a child in such questions it is his search, interactive with his parents. Therefore, you should answer like this: “It seems that I remember that the grass is of all colors, but we see it as green. Let’s check and look in the encyclopedia or the Internet? This is an occasion to become better yourself, find out something together, expand your knowledge and practice your skills. Finding answers can strengthen the relationship with the child and captivate so much that the question itself becomes unimportant.

      Do’s and don’ts

Spread scientific terms and try to prove your superiority. The child will only get tired of it.

      Personal experience

Although sometimes it’s nice to be a walking encyclopedia, we still look for answers to most of these questions together.

      8. Why don’t I have something that others have?

      How to answer

Try to explain to the child that you are trying for him, but it is impossible to have all the things in the world: “Mom (dad) and I try to make you have all the best. But people are different and they have different things. You have one, and your friends have others.

      What not to do

Blame the child for something he is not yet able to understand. The kid does not want to offend you, but is trying to understand the differences in the world around him. And it is pointless to demand from him an understanding of your efforts or special gratitude.

      Personal experience

Quite recently I just heard such a question. And he answered in the style: “Dad buys you everything you want, and you are like this, yes, with your own father …” Yes, it’s always quite difficult to answer correctly.

      9. What is the difference between boys and girls?

      How to answer

If a child asks such a question, most likely, the child has already absorbed some stereotypes about the behavior of boys and girls. Neuroscience professor Liz Eliot, in her book Pink Brain, Blue Brain, advises focusing on commonalities rather than differences. You can answer something like this: “Both boys and girls are hurt, offended, or, conversely, happy. They react to it in different ways and differ in appearance so that everyone is not the same.”

      What not to do

Repeat social stereotypes. There is a great temptation to say: “Boys never cry, and girls are always well-groomed and tidy.” But this is not true, and when the baby sees the examples, he will overwhelm you with even more questions.

      Personal experience

Somehow my daughter already learned that “it’s different with boys.” I don’t dare to go into questions of physiology yet, so I focused on protecting the right of boys to show emotions.

      10. What is sex? (Or another “non-childish” term)

      How to answer

Parents find this difficult to accept, but should be answered directly unless the child is a toddler. Psychologists say that even at the age of three, answering “boys have a penis and girls have a vagina, and they connect when people love each other” is better than hoping that the child will grow up and learn everything on his own.

      What not to do

Saying “that’s a bad word” or “you’ll grow up and you’ll know”. The child will still find the answer. It is likely that he will mislead him and affect his psychological development.

      Personal experience

We haven’t gotten to intimate questions yet, but my daughter reads and is interested in the words written in the entrance. And here again, dad is not up to par. “That’s a bad word,” while I’m at this stage.

Bonus: why am I not flying (not a pony, not a unicorn)?

      How to answer

Such questions seem absurd to adults, but they are perfectly normal for children. Philosophers assure M. Colombo. Experimental philosophy of explanation rising: The case for a plurality of concepts of explanation / Cognitive Science: absurd questions make children look like scientists. And you need to answer in such a way as not to kill the interest of the researcher in them: “People do not fly because they cannot overcome the force of gravity. Do you think it will be possible in the future?”

      What not to do

Laugh at such questions. The child believes everything that the parents say. Because of ridicule, the baby will think that his imagination is something shameful and unnecessary.

      Personal experience

With age, the temptation to say that unicorns are only in Harry Potter becomes more and more. But for now, I hold on and continue to build theories with my daughter about who lives on the far side of the moon.

Why answer children’s questions at all

Because it is very important for the child’s further development. Scientists say that the mechanism of questions in children reflects M. M. Chouinard. Children’s questions: A mechanism for cognitive development / Monographs of the Society for Research in Child Development the level of their cognitive development, and the answers remain in long-term memory. The frequency and content of the questions show how much the baby understands the structure of the world around him. Therefore, it is worth worrying if there are too few or no questions at all.

And also to save the psyche of the parents. Because if you avoid answers, the child’s persistence will increase significantly. Research says When preschoolers ask questions, they want explanations / ScienceDaily: children who get truthful answers often agree with them. And the kids who can’t hear them ask the same question over and over again until they get an explanation.

      Irina Katin-Yartseva

Clinical psychologist, member of the Association of Play Psychotherapy

Answers to questions are remembered much better than information that a person did not ask for. Therefore, for parents, this is a wonderful opportunity to expand the horizons of the child. Parents’ attention to children’s issues stimulates their curiosity and interest in learning, affirms their confidence in their own value, and therefore contributes to deepening attachment, self-confidence and intellectual development.

Funny questions I’m Never for kids

Do you already know how to play the game? Go directly to the list 👉 Go to the list

How to play “I Never …”?

There are several ways to play I Never …. We’ll show you two of our favorite ways to play.

      Option 1: classic

For the classic version, you need nothing more than a good mood. There are no winners or losers. The goal of the game is just to have fun and uncover secrets. And here’s how it works:

All players raise their hands with outstretched fingers so that others can see them. Then one person reads the I Never Never statement, such as “I Never lied to my parents.” All those who lied to their parents before they “lost” one finger and therefore only have 9outstretched fingers.

This is repeated until the first person has lost all his life / there are no fingers left.

      Option 2: right or wrong?

For this version of I Never Never, you will need a pen and paper.

      Quiz:
What kind of avenger are you?

Each round has one person choose from a list of “I’ve Never Never” and read it out loud. The other players must take turns saying whether they think the statement is true or not.

Example: Anna says: “I have never spoken to my stuffed animals.”

Other players now give their opinion:

      • Steve: “Not true”
      • Niko: “Correct.”
      • Ellie: “That’s right.”

When everyone gives their opinion, a person reveals the truth to others. So, has she done it before or not. The players who guessed correctly get a point.

Example: Anna has never actually spoken to a stuffed animal.”

Points will be awarded as follows:

      • Steve got it right → 1 point
      • Niko got it wrong → 0 points
      • Ellie got it right too → 0 points

That’s it. This procedure is repeated every round.

Whoever has the most points at the end wins. You must decide in advance how many rounds you want to play.

Funny riddles for kids ✅ IQsha.ru blog

Have you noticed that a sense of humor helps us to endure life’s troubles more easily? Laughter is the best cure for sadness and longing! Scientists have long proven that people who know how to joke and understand humor make acquaintances much easier, have adequate self-esteem, cope with difficulties and creative tasks more easily, and even recover faster.

A sense of humor is not born, it is an acquired skill. Which means you can learn it! Various interesting riddles are great for developing a sense of humor in preschoolers. Children are very amused by funny inconsistencies in verses or pictures, illogical or unexpected answers.

Funny riddles are a great way to exercise your brain and have fun with your family. Such entertaining puzzles can be used at children’s parties, quests, quizzes and in kindergarten classes.

      Why solve logic problems?

Our whole life consists of solving everyday problems. The ability to quickly summarize information, analyze data, find a way out of a situation, draw conclusions – all this can be developed with the help of logical puzzles. It is possible and necessary to train thinking from an early age. Riddles are one of the most fun ways to improve your logic.

Children as young as 4-5 can solve funny riddles with a trick. Here you have to sweat! Indeed, in such puzzles, not everything is as simple as it seems at first glance. Here, the work of both hemispheres of the brain is turned on with might and main: the left, which is responsible for analysis and logic, and the right, which generates fantasy and imagination. And you will also need to learn to control yourself, so as not to say the first thing that comes to mind. The catch is just hiding in this, because the rhyme will be confusing.

      Funny Riddles with answers

Riddles with cleverness are a great way to improve thinking and sense of humor in a preschooler. Try to answer joke questions with your child. But be careful, the answer may not be entirely obvious. Try not to scold the baby if he suddenly answers incorrectly. And, of course, you shouldn’t tell right away. Reflect together, and then laugh heartily at the comic task.
