US House of Representatives bans Azov Battalion training

Democrat Congressman John Conyers said the US House of Representatives (the lower house of the US Congress) unanimously supported his amendment to the military appropriations law , according to which the US military is prohibited from training the volunteer Ukrainian battalion “Azov” of the National Guard of Ukraine.

The House also approved another amendment by the 86-year-old Conyers to ban the US government from supplying portable air defense systems to Ukraine and Iraq.

The prospects for these initiatives in the US Senate (the upper house of Congress) are not yet clear. It is also unclear how the White House will react to them, which must sign the law in order for it to take effect, so Conyers’ victory has not changed anything so far.

Symbolic decision

But the trend is important. The congressman urged the House to ban the government from dealing with Azov and similar formations back in May last year, but the Republicans who run it have shelved the relevant resolution.

Conyers is the oldest member of Congress in both age and seniority, having represented his Michigan district in its lower house since 1965. He is also one of the most left-wing legislators in the United States, founder and elder of the African American Caucus of the House, a member of its Progressive Caucus and Get Out of Afghanistan!

“Azov” is one of dozens of volunteer units fighting against armed supporters of the self-proclaimed DPR and LPR in eastern Ukraine. It consists, according to various sources, from 500 to 1000 fighters.

“Azov” has a bad reputation in the West.

The End of History Podcast

In announcing his amendment, Conyers cited a number of publications that characterized the battalion’s ideology as neo-Nazi. In particular, he cited Tom Parfitt’s article “Ukraine Crisis: Neo-Nazi Brigade Fights Pro-Russian Separatists”,
printed on August 11, 2014 in the London Telegraph.

In the author’s words, units like Azov “should inspire horror in Europe… Officially they are subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior, but their funding is vague, their training is inadequate, and their ideology is often alarming.”

“Members of Azov carry a neo-Nazi Wolfsangel (Wolf’s Hook) on their banner, and the battalion members are openly white supremacist or anti-Semitic,” continues Parfitt.

As Parfitt notes, “the government of Ukraine is not inclined to repent for using neo-Nazis.”

“The most important thing is their spirit and desire to make Ukraine free and independent,” Anton Gerashchenko, adviser to Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, told him. “A man who takes up arms and goes to defend his homeland is a hero. His political views It’s his own business.”

Repelling aggression

Battalions like Azov, New York professor Mark Galeotti told Parfitt, are dangerous because they become “magnets” for “violent marginals from all over Ukraine and abroad.” According to Galeotti, this creates a “poisonous legacy” that the war will leave behind.

Last September
Washington Post correspondent Anthony Faiola spotted a swastika over the bed of one of Azov’s recruits. A platoon commander named Kirt brushed off the swastika and told the American that it did not necessarily reflect the ideology of its owner. According to him, volunteers, often teenagers, sometimes borrow extremist symbols and concepts for romantic reasons.

The main task of the battalion, said Kirt, is to repel Russian aggression.

Congressman Conyers also mentioned
article “How many neo-Nazis does the US support in Ukraine?”, which was recently published on the liberal website The Daily Beast by Will Cathart and Joseph Epstein.

“Not all members of the US-trained Ukrainian nationalist militias wear SS tattoos, and not all are fascists,” the authors begin. “But there are enough of them to be a concern.”

They note that some Azov fighters wear yellow swastika-like armbands, although many deny that it is a swastika, claiming it is a combined N and I denoting “national identity”. Cathart and Epstein find this interpretation unconvincing, especially in light of the ideology of the founder of Azov, Biletsky, who “created the neo-Nazi group Social-National Assembly (SNA)” in 2008, with which he founded Azov.

It turns out, they write, that “the US government is deliberately training and arming Ukrainian neo-Nazis as part of ultra-nationalist formations in broad daylight, in an unstable country with an uncertain future.” “19 go to itmillion US taxpayer dollars. We all pay for this. You can’t deny it,” write the authors of the article in The Daily Beast.

Armed with these quotes, Conyers and fellow Republican Ted Yoho pushed the said resolution through the House of Representatives.

“Fear the unforeseen consequences!”
