How to protect baby’s skin in summer

Asya Popova

science journalist

Author’s profile

Children’s skin is different from adult skin and needs special care. Especially in summer, when the sun is at its strongest, sunburn in children increases the risk of skin cancer in adulthood.

In this article, together with Ekaterina Yuryeva, a pediatrician and author of the Doctor Yurieva blog, we understand how children’s skin is arranged, how to properly cleanse it and protect it from sun exposure.

The difference between the skin of children and adults

The skin has several layers. The topmost layer that we see is called the horny layer – this is the main protective barrier of our body. It consists of dead skin cells that do not allow bacteria, viruses, dust particles and dirt from the external environment to penetrate into the body. Skin cells are linked by a layer of lipids. The stratum corneum can be compared to the wall of a house, where the cells are bricks and the cement is lipids.

How to save the skin in the summer season?

To keep the surface of the skin from drying out, the sebaceous glands secrete sebum, or sebum. It is a mixture of lipids that help the skin retain moisture and perform protective functions. In children under six years old, the secret is almost not secreted, and their stratum corneum is thinner compared to adults. Because of this, children’s skin copes worse with pathogenic microorganisms and is more sensitive to cosmetic ingredients.

When the sun’s rays hit the skin, the pigment melanin helps protect it from their harmful effects. It is produced by cells located in the lower part of the epidermis. Melanin absorbs ultraviolet radiation to protect skin cells from damage.

The more melanin in the skin, the darker it is and the better it is protected from UV rays. Children have little melanin, so they burn more easily in the sun, and their skin must be protected from ultraviolet radiation more thoroughly than the skin of adults.

The function of the skin’s protective barrier is also affected by pH and the microbiome. In humans, the pH of the skin is slightly acidic with a level of 5-6. Such an environment is favorable for bacteria, which, after birth, begin to actively colonize the baby’s body, train his immune system and form a protective microbiome.

Bacteria on a child’s body do not need to be disposed of. On the contrary, it is important to ensure that the baby’s microbiome is diverse to protect against skin diseases. The poorer the microbiome and the more sterile the skin, the higher the risk of growth of pathogenic bacteria and viruses. There is even a suggestion that excessive hygiene interferes with the formation of the microbiome and increases the risk of atopic dermatitis.

The pH level may change temporarily due to alkaline cosmetic products such as soaps. To avoid this, it is important to choose mild cleansers.

How to clean your baby’s skin

Basic baby skin care doesn’t depend on the season. It is important to cleanse the skin of dirt and dust all year round, but do it carefully so as not to damage the fragile protective barrier.

To do this, it is worth reducing the bathing time as much as possible and not letting the child lie in soapy water. Apply the cleanser at the end of your bath to rinse it off and get your baby out right away. The American Society of Dermatology recommends bathing your baby 2-3 times a week.

18 important questions for cosmetologist Alesya Mukhina

How to properly wash babies. Before the umbilical cord falls off, clean the baby’s skin with a sponge dampened with warm water to avoid wetting the umbilical cord again and let it dry and fall off. After the umbilical cord has fallen off, smoothly proceed to bathing in the bathroom.

How to clean your baby with a sponge:

  1. Lay your newborn on a firm surface.
  2. Place a bowl of warm water nearby. Take a soft sponge or cloth, moisten it with water and wipe the baby’s face and head.
  3. Add a mild cleanser to the water, dampen the sponge again and wipe the body. Rinse off the soap with a damp sponge.

How to bathe your baby in the bath:

  1. Choose whether to bathe your baby in the sink or in the baby bath and use warm, not hot water.
  2. Slowly lower your baby into the water. Most of his body should be above the water.
  3. Dampen a soft cloth or sponge with water and wipe the baby’s face with it. Use a mild shampoo and cleanser to cleanse your scalp and body. Rinse off the soap and take the baby out.

Wrap your baby in a clean towel immediately after bathing. If you notice that after a bath your baby’s skin is dry, rough and flaky, apply a moisturizer or try to bathe your baby less often – 1-2 times a week.

What symptoms on the child’s skin indicate that the care is wrong, and what to do about it

Ekaterina Yurieva

pediatrician

There are several indicators that everything is in order with the child’s skin.

Normal color. The standard skin color of a child is approximately light pink, even marbled pink, with veins of blood vessels that parents can see.

Skin smoothness. The skin must be uniform, pleasant to the touch, not rough.

If any manifestations appear on the skin – for example, cracks, rashes, blotches – this is a sign that there is a problem. For example, improper hygiene, when the child is washed too rarely.

In addition, diet or clothing can affect the condition of the skin. If the child is too hot in it, prickly heat may appear. In summer, prickly heat can appear on parts of the body that come into contact with a stroller or car seat. In this case, try using a special mattress: it will help air circulate more freely between the child’s body and the seat.

To determine exactly what is wrong and help the child, I advise you to contact a pediatrician and a dermatologist.

How to care for the skin under a diaper

This area needs special protection. The moist environment under the diaper softens the skin, while tissue friction and particles of feces and urine can irritate it and lead to redness and peeling. To avoid this, change the diaper immediately after the baby has gone to the toilet.

Water alone is not enough to cleanse a baby’s skin of feces. Particles of faeces and urine mix with skin lipids, which are difficult to wash off with water. It is best to use a mild cleanser or wet wipes. If you prefer wipes, make sure that the composition does not contain alcohol or fragrances: they can irritate the baby’s delicate skin.

/podguzniki/

How I save on baby diapers

Applying moisturizer after cleansing the skin of the perineum helps maintain the skin barrier and protects against stool particles by creating an invisible film on the skin. For children’s skin, you can use a cream containing 5% D-panthenol: this substance helps to restore and soothe the skin, as well as strengthen the protective barrier. It is better to choose a cream without fragrances.

Allow the skin to dry after applying the cream. Let your baby be without a diaper for as long as possible to allow the skin to heal. Try not to use powders and powders, as their particles can get into the child’s lungs.

Is it safe to wear diapers in summer? A dirty diaper can irritate the baby’s mucous membranes and soft skin, leading to prickly heat or diaper rash.

It is also useful to ventilate the baby’s skin during the day, but at the same time, you should not be too zealous with this. For example, refuse a diaper during the day and leave it only at night. In the 21st century, a lot has been invented for the convenience of parents, and this should not be abandoned – there are other things that you can do instead of constantly washing diapers and changing wet clothes. In the heat of the summer, breathable diapers such as Offspring can be used.

There is no need to worry that a boy will have problems with his genitals because he wears diapers for a long time: this is a common myth.

The difference between winter and summer skin care

Our skin feels different in summer and winter. In winter, the air becomes dry due to low temperatures, so we are more likely to experience dryness in the form of peeling and a feeling of tightness. To deal with this, a humidifier may be sufficient. Maintain air humidity at 30-50%.

If baby’s skin still looks dry and flaky, apply moisturizing creams or ointments to dry areas to create a film on the skin and prevent moisture from evaporating. It can be a cream with D-panthenol, petroleum jelly or other thick creams or fragrance-free ointments.

How to care for your skin in the cold season

In summer, the air is more humid and dryness is less of a concern, but at the same time, you need to protect your skin from ultraviolet rays. I’ll tell you how to do it right.

How to protect your baby from UV light

Avoid peak solar activity. The sun is usually most active from 11 am to 4 pm. If the weather forecast is for a hot, sunny day and the UV index is high, it’s best to go outside in the morning or afternoon when the sun is less active.

Wear closed clothing. For outdoor activities, choose a thick but lightweight fabric that does not show through. You can also purchase special clothing that does not let UV rays through: it has a UPF mark. To protect your eyes from bright rays, wide sunglasses will come in handy.

Apply sunscreen to exposed areas of the body before going outside. Don’t forget to renew it every two hours and after swimming.

7 sunscreens worth the money

Try not to use sunscreen before your baby is six months old, as sunscreen can cause redness and itching at an early age. Instead, it is better to protect the skin with clothing and stay in the shade. If you use a spray, first apply it to your hands and then to the child’s skin so that its particles do not enter the lungs.

How to properly apply sunscreen on a child’s skin

Ekaterina Yurieva

Pediatrician

The first step is to choose the right cream. It must be a certified pharmacy brand, dermatologist tested, and the SPF value must never be less than 50.

Apply the cream to all exposed parts of the body, rubbing them well. The face and head also need protection. You need to carefully treat the nose and places under the eyes, because they often burn out. If the length of the child’s hair allows, it is advisable to apply the cream on the scalp, even if he is wearing a panama hat.

It is important to cover the baby’s skin with an even layer of cream. If the skin seems lilac, this indicates that the cream is applied correctly: often creams for children are thicker, their white color in combination with the natural pink color of the child’s skin gives such an effect.

The cream needs to be reapplied approximately every two hours, especially if the child bathes.

Play in the shade, not in direct sunlight, especially if the baby is under six months old. Choose clothes that cover your arms and legs, and wear a panama hat to protect your scalp and face from the sun. Keep in mind that sunlight reflects off the water and sand, so it’s easier to get sunburned on the beach.

The sun visor will help protect your baby from ultraviolet radiation. This is especially important for children under six months old, who are too early to use sunscreen. Source: leokid.com

What daily care cosmetics for children do you need and how to choose them

The main rule for caring for a child’s skin: the less cosmetics, the better. Any new cosmetic product carries the risk of irritation and allergy. For healthy babies, a mild cleanser, moisturizing diaper cream, and sunscreen are sufficient if the baby is over six months old. If there are particularly dry areas on the skin, you can additionally use petroleum jelly.

Once you have chosen the right cosmetics, you should not change them. Cosmetics are not addictive and do not cease to be effective over time.

What to fill a baby’s first aid kit

If you have a family history of atopic dermatitis, a chronic skin condition that is red, dry, itchy, and crusty, discuss the need for remedies prevention with a pediatrician. The risk of atopic dermatitis is passed from parent to child. If the risk is high, the doctor may suggest applying a fragrance-free moisturizer to your child’s skin daily.

Since baby’s skin is thinner and more vulnerable to allergens and irritants, baby cosmetics require strict selection. It should not contain components that could potentially irritate the baby’s skin.

Surfactants. Every cleanser contains surfactants. Such substances are conditionally divided into soft and hard. The former act more carefully, so it is better to choose funds with them. The more soft there are in the composition, the more carefully the remedy acts. Hard ones should be avoided, especially if they are at the top of the ingredient list and there are no other surfactants in the composition.

Which surfactants are commonly found in cosmetics

❌ Hard surfactants ✅ Soft Surfactants
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – SLS Sodium Laureth Sulfate – SLES – with Cocamidopropyl Betaine

Some surfactants cause allergies more often than others. For example, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, as well as surfactants ending with Glucoside, are common allergens. They received the Allergen of the Year award from the American Contact Dermatitis Society.

Preservatives. Preservatives inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi in the product. Without them, the product quickly deteriorates, so you should not look for products that do not contain preservatives. But you need to take into account that some preservatives more often than others cause an allergic reaction and skin irritation.

Perfumes and botanicals are the most common allergens in cosmetics. Try to choose funds without them. Perfumes are referred to as Perfume or Fragrance.

Separate fragrance components may also be indicated in the composition: Linalool, Geraniol, Menthol, Cananga Odorata or Ylang-ylang Oil, Cinnamyl Alcohol, Citral and others. A fragrance-free product is usually odorless. Often fragrances are found in organic or so-called natural cosmetics. Ignore promises that lavender or vanilla cream will help your baby fall asleep. Such statements are nothing more than loud advertisements for the product.

Sun protection products. For children older than six months, choose waterproof sunscreens with type A and type B protection. Type B protection is referred to as SPF. And protection from type A rays – the phrase Broad Spectrum, the UVA sign in a circle or PA +++. Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50.

Tell us what kind of sunscreen your child has

Try to avoid using sunscreens that are more likely to cause irritation and allergies:

  1. Benzophenones: Benzophenones and Oxybenzone.
  2. Cinnamates: Octyl Methoxycinnamate, Octocrylene.
  3. Dibenzoylmethanes: Dibenzoylmethanes or Avobenzone.
  4. PABA and derivatives: Padimate O, Roxadimate.

Hypoallergenic, Allergen Free or Sensitive skin labels are not regulated in Russia. The manufacturer can even place them on a product with common allergens in the composition. At the moment, there are no marks and designations that should be followed when choosing children’s cosmetics.

Pay attention to the composition of the product. The shorter it is, the better. Also, do not buy cosmetics in dubious places where there is a risk of running into a fake. Organic and natural cosmetics often contain fragrances and herbal ingredients and are therefore not suitable for baby care.

How to choose cosmetics for skin care

Pay attention to household chemicals. Laundry detergents and conditioners for baby clothes should also be fragrance-free, as particles of these products remain on fabrics and can cause redness and itching in the baby.

15 Summer Skin Care Rules

1. Don’t make the mistake of leaving the room without sunscreen. This is a must – even in the office and on a cloudy day. Only SPF will protect your skin from harmful ultraviolet radiation, age spots and premature aging.

2. You may not know, but know that lips burn in the sun more often than other parts of the face. A high SPF balm will soften them and protect them from damage.

3. Store your facial toner in the refrigerator to refresh your skin in the heat of summer. For example, in the Ecobeauty range, there is a product in a convenient spray format: it contains organic rose and chamomile water, as well as a huge amount of antioxidants!

4. Don’t forget your scalp. Sunburn in this area is not only painful, but can also lead to flaking. Treat your parting with sunscreen or wear a hat.

5. Don’t skip exfoliating products – regular skin renewal is essential even in summer. Choose an apparatus for cleansing the skin or a scrub, and leave the acids strictly for the evening and do not forget about sun protection.

6. Load up on fresh fruits and vegetables – this is the best investment in skin health. Especially in the summer, when the choice is huge, and the prices are lower. Look out for blueberries, blueberries, kiwis, oranges, papayas, and strawberries, which are high in vitamin C.

7. Try a new way to remove unwanted hair. If you are used to shaving, summer is the best reason to switch to, for example, wax strips. So you injure your skin less, which becomes more sensitive from exposure to the sun, and keep your legs in perfect condition for longer. The secret of success is scrub before the procedure and moisturizing after.

8. Fight breakouts caused by heat and humidity. Thoroughly cleanse the skin, help it renew itself and support with additional care with antibacterial ingredients. If inflammation occurs on the chest and shoulders, discard synthetic fabrics in favor of linen and cotton.

9. Wear sunglasses to protect the delicate skin around your eyes from wrinkles and premature aging. Moisturize with a special cream – the same as for the face will not work!

10. Take care of your hands, because they give away age: the skin on the hands is prone to wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. Use a cream with SPF, which protects against photoaging and improves skin elasticity.

11. Pay special attention to the décolleté area: protect it as carefully as your face. The skin here is even thinner and drier, which means that it suffers much more from the aggressive effects of the sun.

12. Help your skin restore healthy skin moisture levels and minimize the damage of a beach holiday. Choose products with aloe vera extract – they instantly soothe, pleasantly cool and help maintain a tan.

13. Think about how to completely abandon the harmful effects of the sun, replacing it with self-tanning. Modern products – for example, in spray format – are very easy to apply and distribute, so even a beginner can handle it. Just a couple of hours – and your body shines from a golden, but safe tan.
