16 proofs that people’s attitude towards us changes depending on how we dress / Bright Side

Whether we like it or not, our appearance says a lot to others and even changes their attitude towards us. Let’s say if you come to negotiations in sweatpants, then the probability of concluding a contract will tend to zero. And vice versa: a good suit will increase your chances of success.

Theory is theory, and in ADME we thought about how and whether clothes affect the lives of real people.

    • Traveled with a colleague on a business trip to New Delhi. We got to the hotel only at midnight, we were terribly tired and looked very shabby. The staff did not want to serve us, and we received the room only an hour later. The next day, they changed into suits. The guard suddenly saluted me and wished me a good day, and the administrator at the counter dropped all his business, got up and began to smile affably. And this is the same guy who could not put us in a room at night! © Gautham Krishnan / Quora

    • It was at the beginning of the 2000s. Then I climbed the career ladder to the deputy commercial director of a large concern. The management liked to send me on various business trips. I had to change my wardrobe: take out an earring, stop dyeing my hair, and change bombers and grinders for jackets and shirts. Just to choose the last one, my wife and I gathered in a newfangled shopping center. We stopped in front of a shop window – a whole wall of different shirts. I look – SHE hangs. My. I want that! We are looking for a saleswoman. She is nearby, but for some reason does not want to pay attention to us. He defiantly stands with his back to us. I cleared my throat and called her: “Show me that shirt, please!” The aunt turned over her shoulder, cast a contemptuous glance upwards over her glasses, and squealed loudly and clearly at the whole store: “This! Expensive! Shirts! I don’t know why she mistook young, decently dressed guys for rogues. I bought this shirt. She was absolutely on the money for me. © Siriusnash / pikabu

    • A few years ago I had long hair, and I dressed according to the principle of “put on what you have.” I was ignored by everyone who cares. Then I started to pay attention to how my favorite musicians dress: a blue or black plain T-shirt, jeans, sneakers, a nice jacket. Short, deliberately careless haircut. You won’t believe it, but all of a sudden different people started coming up to me. They spoke to me as if they were seeing me for the first time. But many of them were familiar to me. © Sandy Praharsha / quora

    • When I wear an expensive suit to work, everyone treats me with great respect. But as soon as I go out into the street in sportswear, the people around me immediately begin to treat me like a teenager. It’s terribly annoying. But if I put on an outfit for going out or even just a thin summer dress, men shout something rude to me. Although I don’t wear revealing things. © californiad20 / reddit

    • Whenever I dress nicely, people become nicer, more welcoming and kinder towards me. They talk to me without trying to stab me. But as soon as I dress not very neatly or just comfortably, but without a sense of style, everyone turns into gloomy villains, the sellers in the stores serve me terribly and no one smiles. At the same time, I am always emphatically polite, regardless of how I am dressed. © Phillip Stewart / quora

    • Worked in a fur salon. Grandma and grandpa, 80 years old, came in, dressed very simply. My partners didn’t even turn their heads in their direction, but I approached. I didn’t even imagine that they would buy something, I treated them to tea. At the same time, my grandmother lamented something like: “Honey, I won’t buy anything, I don’t have any money.” Bottom line: a fur coat for ₽ 300 thousand and grandfather took a sheepskin coat and a jacket for about ₽ 100 thousand. All for cash. They said that they go shopping all day, and I was the first one who approached them and helped. © Matroskin1986 / pikabu

    • Met a friend whom I had not seen for a year. Came up and said: “Hi! Welcome back! Long time no see!” He didn’t even greet me, he just turned away. “Well, to hell with you!” I decided and mentally added it to my black list. A week later I ran into him again and ignored him. The “friend”, to my surprise, smiled, greeted me warmly and began to ask how things were going. I was surprised, somehow interrupted the conversation and only then realized: in the first meeting I was terribly dressed (I didn’t manage to do anything because of the deadline), and dressed up for the last time. © Mohamed Abdel Maksoud / quora

    • Started taking my daughter to the municipal kindergarten. Before that, she went to a private school. Since my work, although office, does not involve communication with clients, there has never been a dress code. Jeans, sweater, leggings, tunic, simple dresses. I go to work by car, so the shoes are appropriate – no platforms, studs, etc. I rarely use makeup.
At the municipal kindergarten, I was overwhelmed by the large number of smartly and flashily dressed mothers. But I was happy for them.
Once a teacher came up to me and asked me to help with cleaning the playground from leaves. I agreed. The next day, a rake was given to me and another mother and the scope of work was outlined. We did not have time before dark and went home. The next day I had to listen to complaints. Here is the dialogue with the teacher:
      – Why didn’t you and Yulia clean up the whole area yesterday?
      – Didn’t have time. Why didn’t any of the parents come to clean up? We have 30 children in the group, not two.
      – Because only you and Yulia look unpresentable. The rest are too good looking to rake the leaves. ©lucksashka / pikabu

    • I once went to a nail salon after a hard week at work. Appropriate appearance: disheveled, dressed simply, circles under the eyes. Give, I think, at least I will please myself. I go to the reception to find out what services and how much. And then I see such contempt in the look of this lovely lady that it even somehow became uncomfortable that I was trampling their floor with my sneakers and, in general, insulting the noble visitors of the salon in every possible way with my whole appearance. It became so disgusting that I never returned to them. © Zai4ixa / pikabu

    • When I was in college, I worked at a car wash. I usually wore simple clothes: shorts and a T-shirt, which were constantly dirty from work. When I needed help, I waited a very long time for one of the employees to come and help. We had a performance in college one time, so I dressed up in a suit. And on the way I went to work to get something. The manager literally jumped up to say hello to me and in no time gave me what I needed. © Lavender Goomes / reddit

    • My family moved to a small town in the Kaluga region. Once, in the 9th grade, a teacher approached me: “I am so glad! Don’t you know yet, brother or sister?” It turns out that my mother’s colleagues made this conclusion because she didn’t dress like everyone else: she preferred sneakers rather than heels, and wore jeans with a loose windbreaker. It was overgrown with rumors – and now I find out from the teacher that, it turns out, my mother is going to give birth soon. © TasyaNeko / pikabu

    • The more expensive the boutique you enter, the less neglect. I received the first prize, and it hit me in the head to buy an evening dress with all the money. I took my husband. Summer. He is in an alcoholic T-shirt and tattoos, I am in torn jeans. We go into “Okhotny Ryad” – everyone turns their faces away from us and can’t even stand the size. We go to GUM – everyone reacted the same way. We go to Iceberg – and the girls start to endure everything they have, from ₽ 50,000 to ₽ 250,000 for a dress. I tried on all the options, chose the best one and left satisfied, having spent a lot of money. To this day, this dress is my pride. And the rest were left without revenue because of their stereotypes. © memini / pikabu

    • An acquaintance worked as a nanny in the garden. There were not enough educators – I had to work for two. 2 applicants came. The manager was indignant: “I didn’t even talk to them: one is fat, the other is not dressed in fashion!” © lyuba34 / pikabu

    • When I wear my best clothes, men, women, even old people and children treat me more respectfully than when I’m in stretched sweatpants and a T-shirt. I dress especially carefully when I go to a hairdresser or a store with expensive clothes. If I am dressed ugly, unfamiliar hairdressers automatically assume that I need any classic hairstyle that does not require much effort to create. And I generally prefer more fashionable haircuts. Therefore, you have to dress carefully before going to the salon. © herkimercuts / reddit

    • I was looking for jeans. I dress simply, I don’t bother. I went from department to department. I go into one, I ask the consultant to immediately show what is there. She shows, and then I ask: “Is that all?” She lowered her eyes and said in a guilty voice: “Yes, but they are from a new collection and expensive.” To be honest, they weren’t that expensive either! © 1oo1 / pikabu

    • Came with her young husband to the village to visit her parents. Usually they came for a short time, they didn’t go out “in public”. He helped with repairs, and I helped with the garden. We ran out of self-tapping screws – we decided to go to the local general store. We went as is: unwashed and in work clothes. We went to the cash register, paid off, and at that time there was a local type of about 30 years old. I remember how he was always drunk, cheerful and unemployed under the bushes. We were already leaving, and he followed us: “Lord, what was it like now? You have to get to that point!” Parents were asked for a long time what happened to me and how I could “sink” like that. © Roksi45 / pikabu

Bright Side/Folk Art/16 evidence that people’s attitude towards us changes depending on how we dress

My neighbors and I had a noise competition. Classical music won

I rent an apartment in a fairly quiet area. I don’t know the neighbors because I moved here recently. The walls in the apartment are very thin, if you listen closely, you can hear conversations. But it doesn’t really bother me, I’m constantly at work.

I love to play the piano, it’s my hobby. As a child, I went to music school, I really liked to invent my own melodies. In the new apartment I had only a synthesizer. But unexpectedly my brother Oleg decided to give me a surprise:

-Mila, I want to bring you a piano, I know how much you love music, I think you will like it!

But I began to worry about my neighbors. The walls are thin, you can hear everything. How will they react to my instrument?

-Don’t worry like that, you won’t be playing at three in the morning, – Oleg said, and I calmed down a bit.

The next day the piano was delivered to me, I was extremely grateful to my brother. Finally I can write my own melodies.

Unlike a synthesizer, the sound of a piano is much clearer and louder. Evening came, and I decided to start playing the instrument. I started to create, and the music took me somewhere very far away. The melody flowed by itself. I did not even immediately notice how the neighbors began to knock on the batteries.

I stopped my game and the battery hitting stopped. “It’s okay, they’ll get used to it,” I thought.

The next day I sat down to play again, the clock was 10 am. For several minutes I studied music calmly, no one bothered me. I played, wrote notes and played again. When suddenly they began to knock on the batteries, I stopped my game and listened.

-They are playing the piano again, how tired they are, – I heard a woman’s voice.

I didn’t pay attention, but continued to play even louder. But the neighbors did not give up either – the knock on the batteries began to intensify.

“They decided to play a game with me? Okay, so let’s play, ”I thought at that moment.

I began to press the keys harder, and the neighbors continued to beat the batteries more violently. After a minute, everything was quiet. I continued to play one of the pieces of music, when suddenly I heard the noise of a drill.

-Are you kidding me?! I shouted.

The drill made noise without stopping, as if it had just been turned on. In parallel with the drill, I began to hear the noise of dishes. Without thinking twice, I took the pan and started banging on it so that the neighbors would calm down, but they did not give up.

-Will you calm down or not? – shouted the woman, continuing to make noise with the dishes.

I hit the pan and they hit the batteries, I played the piano and they drilled something with a drill. This went on for a few minutes and eventually I stopped.

I decided that I would go personally and talk to them. I went up to the top floor, where the sounds came from, but they didn’t open it for me. I stood there for several minutes, continuing to knock on the door, but they never came out.

I didn’t waste time, went back to my room and just kept playing. For the remaining half an hour, no one bothered me, I even managed to finish writing part of the invented melody.

In the evening the same show started as in the morning. The neighbors turned on the drill and started banging on the battery, but I did not give up.
